I feel much better
about passing up Maualuga and Laurinatus. I still don’t think this factored into draft day strategy because the Lions couldn’t have counted on getting a player that was, at the time, on another team’s roster. That said, I am now comfortable with where the Lions are at Middle Linebacker and the Linebacking unit as a whole. This is a great pick-up.
3-4
Given the depth of our linebackers and the incredible mediocrity of our DL, doesn’t a 3-4 defense make more sense at this point than the 4-3?
Unfortunately
The personnel we have on the D-line, with the exception of Grady Jackson, don’t fit the ideal personnel for a 3-4 alignment. I personally like the 3-4 idea, but the Lions are a year or two away from being able to make it their permanent base Defense. I still think that we’ll see some situational 3-4 alignments this year in an effort to keep opposing Offenses off balance. I’m just glad they aren’t going to run the Tampa 2 anymore.
Oops...hit enter
I’d say we’re no more than a year away. We’ve got the linebacking corps to go 3-4, now the only thing we’re really missing is a solid nose tackle. I think we make the switch next offseason.
Of course
It all depends on what system the Lions stick with. Schwartz and Cunningham may decide to stay with a 4-3 during their time here. However, having the personnel that can switch off and play both systems gives a Defense huge flexibility.
True
They are on record saying that we’ll run primarily from the 4-3, but Gun has said that we’ll be lining up in the 3-4 in certain situations. From what I can tell, we’ll be showing a few different looks to defenses this year. If nothing else, it’ll be a lot more fun/interesting to watch than 4-3 zone coverage ALL YEAR.
I’m just happy we’re getting size back on defense, and not trying to force the wrong players into the wrong system.
