Free Agent Defensive Linemen

Ok guys.....continuing my pursuit of the preparation of informative free agent listings I have prepared a list of available defensive linemen, including DT's and DE's.  Again,  I do not know if these guys (in reality the defensive ends) play the right or left side, but I figure with a list of available players it will be easier to whittle it down from there.  I am getting my information directly from NFL.com, so if the list is not 100% current or accurate, it is not my fault.  Here you go:

Defensive Tackles:

DT Kendrick Allen UFA Minnesota Vikings Free Agent

DT Ryan Boschetti UFA Washington Redskins Free Agent

DT Victor DeGrate UFA (Cut) Cincinnati Bengals Free Agent

DT Damane Duckett UFA San Francisco 49ers Free Agent

DT Donnie Edwards UFA (Cut) Kansas City Chiefs Free Agent (Listed as a DT on NFL.com??)

DT Gary Gibson UFA Carolina Panthers Free Agent

DT La’Roi Glover UFA St. Louis Rams Free Agent

DT William Joseph UFA Oakland Raiders Free Agent

DT Antwan Lake UFA New Orleans Saints Free Agent

DT Shemaih LaGrande UFA Detroit Lions Free Agent

DT Anthony Montgomery RFA Washington Redskins Free Agent

DT Langston Moore UFA Detroit Lions Free Agent

DT James Reed UFA New Orleans Saints Free Agent

DT Dewayne Robertson UFA (Cut) Denver Broncos Free Agent

DT Kenny Smith UFA New England Patriots Free Agent

DT Montavious Stanley UFA New Orleans Saints Free Agent

DT Hollis Thomas UFA (Cut) New Orleans Saints Free Agent (NT in 3-4)

DT John Thornton UFA Cincinnati Bengals Free Agent

DT Darwin Walker UFA Carolina Panthers Free Agent

DT Gabe Watson RFA Arizona Cardinals Free Agent (NT in 3-4)

DT Ellis Wyms UFA Minnesota Vikings Free Agent

DT Briari Young UFA (Cut) New Orleans Saints Free Agent

DT Jeff Zgonina UFA Houston Texans Free Agent

Defensive Ends:

DE Jason Babin UFA Kansas City Chiefs Free Agent

DE Kevin Carter UFA Tampa Bay Buccaneers Free Agent

DE Patrick Chukwurah UFA Tampa Bay Buccaneers Free Agent

DE Earl Cochran RFA Houston Texans Free Agent

DE Ebenezer Ekuban UFA Denver Broncos Free Agent

DE Eric Henderson UFA (Cut) Cincinnati Bengals Free Agent

DE Vonnie Holliday UFA (Cut) Miami Dolphins Free Agent

DE Corey Mace UFA Buffalo Bills Free Agent

DE Jerome McDougal UFA New York Giants Free Agent

DE Chase Pittman UFA Cleveland Browns Free Agent

DE Orpheus Roye UFA Pittsburgh Steelers Free Agent

DE Josh Thomas UFA Indianapolis Colts Free Agent

DE Anthony Weaver UFA (Cut) Houston Texans Free Agent

DE James Wyche UFA Jacksonville Jaguars Free Agent

RFA = Restricted Free Agent, which means that a player, who has completed 3 years in the NFL, is free to solicit offers from other teams for new contracts. However, before this player is allowed to sign with the new club, the current club has a chance to match the terms of the new contract in which case the player must remain with the original team.

UFA = Unrestricted Free Agent, which means a player, who has completed four or more years in the NFL, is without a team. They have either been released (cut), had the term of their contract expire without a renewal, or were not chosen in the draft. These players, generally speaking, are free to entertain offers from all other teams and to decide with whom to sign a new contract.

I have placed the guys, which I feel are worthy of a look, in bold.  Again, I do not know if the list is current, accurate, or which side of the line these guys play on.  What do you guys think/know?  Remember, these guys do not have to be long term answers to be good for a year or two and help our younger players get better, while at the same time filling some needs temporarily.

Good List

La’Roi Glover is just a big name now, he’s fallen off considerably.

I am not so sure

I wonder if Glover has really “fallen off” or if he lost productivity due to the system he was in at St. Louis and the supporting cast surrounding him. He is a solid veteran who could at the very least be added for depth in our rotation, in my opinion.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL

Why did you place William Joseph in bold…

Just the thought of this guy still being in the NFL is reason to laugh…

by FreeBradshaw on May 10, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

He’s young and I thought that he might be better on a different team than Oakland.

by KDawg on May 10, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Kendrick Allen

Is interesting, I honestly don’t know much about him, but he could be a good talent that’s been stuck behind better talent (the Williams wall) such as a guy like Michael Turner. He could be worth a look if Schwartz and co. thinks he’s a good fit for the system. But all we can do is speculate it’s up to the brass in the end.

Rec’d btw

Nvm

Allen’s been resigned

Damn

I also liked him as a prospective free agent addition…..I will edit him off the list. Thanks for the rec….:o)

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually.....that article was from March 21, 2008

It is talking about last year when the Vikings got Boulware from the Texans and Allen from the Packers, both as unrestricted free agents. Allen had not played since 2006 with the Packers, as he played in 2 games and was injured for the rest of 2006 afterwards. I may take the bold designation off of him after reading this, but I am pretty sure that he is available.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Oops....

One of the DE’s on my list, Jason Hunter, has already been claimed by the Lions off waivers from GB…..to be editied off the list.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Sweet

He was released by the Packers because he did not project well as an OLB in the Packers switch to the 3-4 defense. Maybe we got another good 4-3 DE……

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I also just read....

That the Lions are in talks with Kevin Carter and his agent….Mayhew has said that Carter does not appear to be inclined to make any immediate moves, but they are negotiating with him and his addition is possible.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I was just going to ask

if anyone had heard how that was going.

by James L on May 9, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

If Carter does sign

It’ll be part way through camp. No reason to rush into for an old man like that. Though I’d like to see the Lions pick him up.

Jason Taylor

The guy who almost won Dancing with the Stars? The guy who wants to pursue a movie career?

Seriously speaking though, he’s good, but I don’t think he’ll come here. I also don’t think he’s at the level he used to be. Still, all the players you put in bold are an upgrade from what the Lions have. Just keep Avril on the team. I think he’ll turn out to be a solid player for the Lions.

by James L on May 9, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

lol

Hey man…..Walter Payton was a ballet dancer. Dancing is good for strength and balance. Have you ever tried dancing more than just at the club, school events, or weddings etc? I actually took a dancing class one spring term (cause I thought it would be a breeze and I would meet alot of hot chicks). Man was I in for a surprise. I was sore for a week from doing all of the routine dance moves and crap. However, it was quite the experience as I got to travel to Toronto with my class and see a live dance company production. Plus I was one of 5 guys in the class of 40, so dancing with 35 college girls was alot of fun….:o)
That said, who doesn’t wish they could have a movie career? LOL…..if the guy can use his NFL notoriety to get a movie role, more power to him. Somehow I doubt that he even has close to the acting talent that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has, but who knows? Maybe he is the next Schwartzenegger. Personally, I think Stone Cold and The Rock are pretty good action heroes….and I’m not too sure Jason Taylor fits in action movies…..maybe he can land a role on The Bold and the Beautiful….lol.
I agree that it is unlikely that he comes to Detroit, and that he does not play as well as he used to. I am just wondering if he is still as good or better than White, and if he is it would not hurt us to have both guys if we could get him to come here. I put his name in bold without regard to whether or not he would come to Detroit. I just think he is worthy of consideration as a free agent, especially by a team like the Lions who were very weak on defense last year. I like what they have done so far, but I think a few more key additions could make this into a very good defense.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Stone Cold was pretty good in Condemned

Even if it was a pretty crap movie.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

by Hyperion Ecta on May 9, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

does it matter?

it was stone cold!!! Austin 3:16 says he just kicked our ass! and put out a bad movie!!! Hey K dawg there have also been a few great players who have gone to the silver screen and did well, who can forge Jim Brown I meen the guy could act. . . .in bad 70’s movies but he could act. And Who will ever forget “high tower” ? :)

by davis0169 on May 13, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

True

But do you see Taylor fitting a Hightower type of role or the type of role Jim Brown filled? I can’t even begin to picture him as a badass.

by KDawg on May 13, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

O.J. Simpson played one of the funniest roles I've ever seen in a movie.

Dick Butkis and Alex Karis who would’ve thought those mean S.O.B.’s could act.

by Runnin' Rebel on May 13, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

True true

I’m not saying that NFL players do not have acting ability…..I just see Jason Taylor in a soap opera role….LOL

by KDawg on May 14, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

mybe in a childens movie or something but I agree I can’t see him bing an action hero or anything even close! Oh I got the perfect roll for him: 1 of the male cheerleaders from any of the “bring it on” series!!!

by davis0169 on May 16, 2009 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

John Thornton

He is a decent pass-rusher and a class-act in the locker room. Not to mention he can mentor the younger DL.

by cincyboy on May 9, 2009 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

He would be a solid addition to our D-Line and we could really use his experience at DT.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the Bengals are only letting him go

because they got Raji. Also, injuries last year forced Thornton outside to DE. Some say he is merely “adequate” as a Pro.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Doh.....

Sorry, I knew that too…..I just read something about Thornton that came out before the draft and in the aritcle it said “possible replacement BJ Raji”. You are right. I will have to look and see who the Bengals did get to replace him if anyone.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That's right

They signed Tank Johnson.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

So

Maybe they are letting Thornton go because they got Tank Johnson, they also have Domata Peko and Pat Sims, and because they are concerned about his durability.

Domata Peko who finished third on the team in tackles last year, has established himself at left end while Pat Sims, who was drafted in the third round last year, did a solid job during the second half of the season after John Thornton was injured.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't mind Kevin Carter and Gabe Watson

That would shore up the D-line nicely. Just the kind of players the Schwartz loves, too.

by JazzyBBP on May 9, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

Mayhew is the one we have to worry about mostly though…..Mayhew has known Taylor for a long time, and they both came from the same town in FL. As far as Carter goes, I think we will end up signing him. I would love to see Gabe Watson in Detroit as well, but I have not heard anything about the Lions even considering another FA DT since signing Grady Jackson. I am hoping that they will, and I would be happy with Watson too.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry....

I meant Carter, not Taylor.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish that some website would get their crap straight

And have a current list updated…..

I just found out that Jovan Haye signed with the Titans back in March (to replace Haynesworth)…..I have edited him off the list.

by KDawg on May 9, 2009 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

None of those FA's are really appealing.

Maybe one of the DT’s like Glover would be nice so we wouldn’t have to play Darby. Otherwise, I wanna see some of our young guys get a run.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

by Hyperion Ecta on May 9, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

The Glove Fits

A six time pro-bowler who could stuff the middle on 1st and 2nd down. I know the guy isn’t what he used to be (or even close), but this is another one of those positions that will need a long term solution eventually and it would be nice if they could get a veteran in there as a stop-gap guy who could at least contribute. O-Line and D-Line need a lot of help to get better, but at least they’re not saddled with that ridiculous Redding contract.

by Mushy on May 10, 2009 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

Detroit Wolverines

Gabe Watson is young and huge. Out of anyone on this list I’d like to see him on the squad,

by MattyZ on May 11, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

would be nice!

As i fall on the blue and gold side of the great divide, it would be nice to see a few more wolvernes on te team, and if you have to put sparties on it to make them on the def side of the ball all of there Offensive players suck or come with pot rolling instructions. etc etc. Smoker and rogers could have been in that old Dave chapelle skit where charie murphy shouts out RASHWEED Wallace the chalky sticks his head out and says DAMON STOD. lol :)

by davis0169 on May 13, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Hahaha

True about Smoker and Rogers. You could even throw in Rison. But lets not forget about the fore-father of all the drug-head athletes. Roy Tarpery.

by JCruize on May 13, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

ooooooooo

we were talking pot smokers not COKE heads!!! And mono a mono I think most athletes pro and amateur alike are on more drugs than any of us can even imagine. Heck you cn look at most of the Basket-ball players nowwa days even back to my youth with the Larry Legend celtics and you and the rest of the world could tell that Parrish and Mc(in)Hale were puffing away on something, at least the chief admitted to it. Dennis Johnson had those sunk in (pot smoker) eyes with the racoon patches around them. Hell I could go on and on with this one. Can anyone say “WIZZINATOR” ????

by davis0169 on May 16, 2009 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

lol

Wizzinator…..I haven’t heard that in so long…….what about Sccoby and Shaggy man? lol

by KDawg on May 16, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

I can think of more than...

a few of U of M offensive players that just didn’t plan out.

by JCruize on May 16, 2009 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Eric Henderson

He is a team player who loves too teach young players how to get into the organization. He wouldn’t cost much. He is a community guy. Might as well.

by cincyboy on May 13, 2009 9:19 PM EDT reply actions

I can appreciate..

the fact that you are a Bengals fan. But everytime we are discussing free agents. You only mention ex-Bengals players. There are other players outside of Cincinnati. One question I have to ask though. Does Chad Johnson know that Ocho Cinco just means 8,5. And not eighty-five? Ochenta y cinco is eighty-five.

by JCruize on May 13, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sorry

I just watched these players over the years and think that they coould fit into Detroit’s new look.

I guess he knows

oops.....got some Russian in there that doesn't translate right.

How do you think

Holliday would work in the Detroit picture?

by cincyboy on May 14, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe..

considering that Gunther had him in KC a couple of years ago

by JCruize on May 14, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I am sorry if you think I am being bias

but I really think Eric Henderson would be good in Detroit he is a versatile leader who can play with injuries.

I just...

dont know alot about him to make a comment

by JCruize on May 14, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

CincyBoy

Why did the Bengals cut E. Henderson?

by KDawg on May 15, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

In that case….I’d be cool with that if he is any good.

by KDawg on May 15, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying he would be an Albert Haynesworth

But, he could definetly make some play for Detroit.

by cincyboy on May 15, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

At DE

We would probably sign him for depth

by KDawg on May 15, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Right now?

It’s Jared DeVries (underrated and forgotten, IMO) and DeWayne White. Cliff Avril is a guy to watch. 2nd year pass rusher.

by Nate D. on May 15, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Those are all pretty young guys

you could bring in Henderson and he could get them into working like starters and who knows maybe he could steal the opening day starting position.

by cincyboy on May 15, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm crossing my fingers

for Kevin Carter.

Pretty much anyone at this point, but either of those two guys would be solid. Carter seems more likely, due to his connection to Schwartz though.

by Nate D. on May 15, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Carter is a strong possibility

But I see White and Avril as the starters…..depth is always good and a solid rotation is needed, so Henderson could be good too.

by KDawg on May 16, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

We tried this once before

It won’t go any smaller. Let’s try a really long word:

Okay

can we start to move this back over to the other margin.

by James L on May 16, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

nope

I started it. And this is where it is staying.

by JCruize on May 16, 2009 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Vonnie Holliday

He made some plays in Miami. Might as well ink him he had a decent season last year.

by cincyboy on May 13, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

That is actually a good thing

I like when we pick up guys who used to play in our division – It gives them familiarity with the opposing offenses (to an extent) and a bit of an edge as well.

by Nate D. on May 16, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

The DL pool

doesn’t look to deep this year.

by cincyboy on May 14, 2009 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

you had something there!

I’m not going to say i know alot about henderson but he was a descent player for your Bengals for a few years and if that team wouldn’t have been bit so hard by the injury bug the last few years, his stats would of been alot better! I mean damn you guys had to pick up Joe Shmo off the street to start at LB a few times last year ad correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t you guys have a couple of games that you were down to 2 LB’s?

by davis0169 on May 16, 2009 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah and at GT
