Monday Notes: Lions Get Ready for Final Minicamp

  • The Lions' last mandatory minicamp session will take place from Tuesday to Thursday.  After that, players will basically have a month off before they have to head back to Allen Park in preparation for the start of training camp.  Of course, most players will be busy conditioning during their break, but there are no organized team practices during the time off.
  • Remember how there was some concern over Matthew Stafford's marketability when he was first drafted?  Well, it doesn't seem like he's having a problem with endorsements, as he already has deals with Axe Hair, Sprint, and "various" card companies.
  • The next edition of the Lions Review Radio Show is tonight from 7-9 at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Canton.
  • Thanks to a combination of new players and coaches that have experienced winning before, Matthew Stafford thinks the team's attitude has been great so far this offseason.
  • Kevin Smith will be training in Miami while he waits for training camp to begin.
  • Punter Nick Harris is glad Stan Kwan was retained by Jim Schwartz, saying that the special teams unit was "pretty solid last year in a lot of areas."  Jason Hanson was pretty solid last year, but that's about it for special teams.  Harris wasn't bad by any means, but the punt/kick coverage and punt/kick returns weren't impressive to me.
  • The Lions have set up a Facebook and Twitter page. (HT: Lions Gab)
  • Matthew Stafford's makeover by Maria Sharapova was included in the latest issue of ESPN the Magazine, which Sharapova is on the cover of.

Not to be a naysayer, but I’m anticipating Stafford getting criticism from some quarters, and soon, about all these endorsement deals when he hasn’t played a snap in the NFL, and may not yet for a while. I’m finding myself wondering about what sort of endorsement opportunities presented themselves to the likes of Alex Smith and Matt Leinert prior to their debuts.

Also….just gotta say…..anyone else think the makeover by Sharapova took Stafford from looking like an everyday guy, someone who’d fit into the Detroit stereotype, lunch bucket crowd type, to some sort of….well….preppy idiot? WTF is up with those stupid boots?

hahah

they were going for the mich Tom Brady look apparently thou. But in his defense this did take place in LA (opposite of detroit in most ways) and BEFORE he got drafted number 1 by the lions.

How’d Joey Harrington dress again? I figure just do the opposite Stafford.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene.

he looks pretty goofy

but it is just a magazine spread. i highly doubt he’ll head back to detroit wearing armani and gucci. at least i hope. hell, as long as he can throw the football, i don’t care what he looks like.

I think those companies endorsing Staff know he might not play for a while.

I was going to make that comparison….but then thought about it and realized that Stafford’s pretty low key compared to that…

The real burning question....

Did Stafford hit it or what?

He's still just a kid

But I’ll give him credit if he tried. And she’s a professional athelete groupie. Too bad she’s not a ‘fat old unemployed white guy’ groupie. I’d be on her like sweat, and give her the best 30 seconds of my life. Just one time, and a million times by myself. LOL!

I agree Sean

I am not sure where Harris gets his confidence in Kwan from…..
