1953 NFL Championship Game Film

Yesterday, I presented you with my grandfather's 1952 NFL Championship game footage. Today, we move on to the 1953 game. IN 1953, the Lions met the Browns in a rematch of the previous year's championship with nearly all the some players on each roster. Detroit would again only manage 17 points, but the Browns only got 16 and the Lions came away with their third NFL Championship.

This footage is also roughly thirty minutes long, but I had to break it up into four seperate installments (thanks YouTube!). However, the footage from this game is not nearly as good as the 1952 footage as it is in black and white and there is no audio track. Hopefully, you guys can still enjoy this though. Watch your Detroit Lions go home champs once again!!

Game starts after the jump!

Just wish it wasn't 50+ years ago!

Not a problem

I am glad you guys enjoy this stuff, there’s a lot more to come. I have an entire reel of 1954 highlights, but it’s gonna take some time as I’m waiting on a part for my grandfather’s old 16 mm projector (also from ’54) before I can transfer that stuff. You guys should really enjoy that footage.

Thanks Brian, A lot of fun to watch.

I love the kickoffs, especially the short guy on the receiving team who takes a shot at the kicker every time.
the refs also seemed to give a lot of forward progress [re:crawling] after a tackle. Made it important to bury the guy or hold on.

Classic!

Apparently

and I’m not entirely sure at the moment, but I believe the rule at that time was that you had to hold the guy down for like a second or two for him to actually be called down. It wasn’t as simple as a knee touching or anything like that.
