The Best QB situation in the NFC North...

Since June is a kind-of quiet month for Lions fans, I thought I'd offer a little reflection on just how good things look for us behind center...

They say you can use statistics to say anything.  Well, I would like to use statistics to say that the we have, by far, the best QB situation in the NFC North.  Comparing our QB trio to the four QB's who we are likely to face in our division, consider the following:

Career Passer Rating:
95.0 - Drew Stanton
91.8 - Aaron Rodgers
87.1 - Jay Cutler
76.5 - Tarvaris Jackson
74.2 - Gus Frerotte

Pro Bowls:
3 - Daunte Culpepper (2000,2003,2004)
1 - Gus Frerotte (1996)
1 - Jay Cutler (2008)
0 - Aaron Rodgers
0 - Tarvaris Jackson

Draft Position:
#1 - Matthew Stafford
#11 - Jay Cutler
#24 - Aaron Rodgers
#64 - Tarvaris Jackson
#197 - Gus Frerotte

NFL Interceptions:
0 - Drew Stanton
0 - Matthew Stafford

14 - Aaron Rodgers
18 - Tarvaris Jackson
37 - Jay Cutler
106 - Gus Frerotte

Taking into account the above data, and without using any relevant explanations or counter-evidence that might rain on my parade, tell me, is there any possible way that we won't have the best passing game in our division next year?

:-)

what about passing %?

im with you since im a lions fan i would say QB Stafford has the best chance of getting the best numbers this year just cause of CJ (megatron) and K.Smith with an assortment of vets in there ..o.o.o. and Petigrew i cant believe i forgot about his guy…..

QB Rodgers=mainly run team-there isnt a stat of how many times you handed the ball off for quarterbacks

QB Cuntler=no recievers-hes not a mobile QB-his ground game is good but not yet consistent

QB Jackson/Sage Rosenfelds=lifetime back ups on anyother team -vikings do have a great team but that doesnt mean their quarterbacks are good Average not Good

GO Lions==id even pick up a healthy Culpepper over other NFC North QB’s

Green Bay threw 541 times last year for 4,044 yards and rushed 437 times for 1805 yards. I wouldn’t call that a “mainly run team.” And even if your statement was factual, what does that have to do with whether or not Rodgers is a good and accurate QB, which he is?

On Cutler, how is he “not a mobile QB,” please enlighten me! Here are some quotes that show you are in the minority on this stance:

- "From the standpoint of physical tools, he is about as good as I’ve seen," Sundquist said. "He’s athletic, big, strong, can make all the throws and has good feet. He can run. He’s ultra-competitive. If I were a general manager, I would jump all over him and not think twice." Broncos ex-GM Ted Sunquidst

"He has rare arm strength. He moves around good enough. He can throw on the move. He makes throws most can’t. … The deep ball, he doesn’t always put enough air under. He struggles with touch throws at times. He can be a little lazy in his set. But he doesn’t always need to set his feet because his arm is so strong." An NFC Pro Scout

- Asked what he needs to be concerned with when facing Cutler, "Extending the play. He’s the kind of quarterback who is going to get away from linemen and linebackers. When he pulls down the ball and starts moving, he’s looking to go downfield. And he has the arm to do it. He has the legs to run like a chicken with his head cut off." Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard

- When asked about Cutler’s intangibles, "He has the ability to get you out of bad plays, the ability to process a great deal of information each week, the toughness to withstand a 16-game season and the capacity to stand in front of the media, take a butt-kicking and say the right things." - Former QB and CBS Analyst/Broadcaster

He has also rushed for 423 yards in 37 games, and averaged 3.7 yard per attempt. Only six other NFL QB’s had more rushing yards then he did last year and that doesn’t even speak volumes to his ability to scramble and get the pass off before getting sacked.

And on top of that, I would say the only thing that was “consistent” last year for the Bears offense, was the ground game. I love your enthusiasm you share for your team, but at least make accurate statements.

i like ur reponse there u BEARS FAN....

yeah you could show your stats from QB Cutler from DENVER! but your right he has some leg speed and a hell of a good arm but even in your article it states:

“He has the legs to run like a chicken with his head cut off.” Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard
-i dont like my QB to resemble any type of chicken regardless lol
“…the toughness to withstand a 16-game season and the capacity to stand in front of the media, take a butt-kicking and say the right things.” – Former QB and CBS Analyst/Broadcaster
—-already chi town is getting pissed over stupid autographs-he didnt hadle himself that well
“…He can be a little lazy in his set. But he doesn’t always need to set his feet because his arm is so strong.” An NFC Pro Scout
-counts on his arm to bail him out and makes stupid throws in haste

these arent the best quotes to make a rebutle that QB Culter is the best NFC North QB…granted no one has proven themselves since the season hasnt begun and all the new faces and players…it really has changed (green bay 3-4 def.)(chicago getting older and trading alot for HOPE that culter is worth it)(Vikings basically the same just with more disgruntaled players lol)

but its all in good fun and well see who does the work this off season and walks the walk during the season

At work, I mean home on lunch break and this actually made me laugh out loud! I don’t goof off at work, never!

Please don’t misinterpret what I was saying. At this point, I don’t think KNOW if Cutler is the best QB in the north. I think he was a great pickup for the Bears and he may actually be the best option of any team in our division, but Green Bay still has Rodgers, who is good and could possibly take another step forward. Culpepper, if fully back at pro-bowl form, is quality and Stafford could be this years Matt Ryan. The quotes I posted were simply to refute phil’s statements on Cutler not being mobile, which is not the case.

Also, I don’t know if Chicago is that old. It seems we have a bit of a youth movement happening. Yes, they signed Pace to protect Cutler’s backside – so I will leave that where it is. Kruetz is up there too, but should have a few more years in there and we already have his replacement in training. Cutler, Hester and Olsen (our ‘on paper’ top performers on the Offense are all really young. On D, the Bears only have two starters (Urlacher and Ogunleye) over 30 and Wale, most likely, will not be picked back up next year.

Hmm..

I just had to comment. “Could possibly take another step forward”? What leads you to think there is a chance he won’t?

Since I’ve been over at the WCG you know what I’m going to say. I just don’t see any rec on your Bears team that is going to demand a double team. At least not as of now, I know you guys are real high on Hester and deservidly so, the guy can flat out run and make people miss. I still feel that the Bears best weapon, other than Forte; is Greg Olson well both of the TE’s over there. Now if somehow you guys can get Marshall then it’s a hole new ball game. I still feel that you guys gave up too much inorder to get him.

Haha

I just can’t understand why or how people can think we’re a run first team. We haven’t been for the last 20 years.

“GO Lions==id even pick up a healthy Culpepper over other NFC North QB’s”

Come on man. Be realistic, no team in their right mind would ever take DC over Rodgers or Cutler.

Packallday

You should of added 1 little line to your post. And that would be: since he left minn. If you were to ask that same question a handfull of years ago Culpepper would of been at the top of alot of teams lists.

my thoughts exactly!

Only if you could mold all of those categories into one QB and have that guy be your starter. Stafford may be great, hell Culpepper may even surprise this year. Who knows?

IF you consider your obviously skewed and biased data

Then yes, we will by have, by far, the most prolific passing offense out of the NFC North. I laughed at this, but hey you may have something, once you take into account the other plethora of QB variables, like sacks, O-Line efficiency, ability to run the ball, having a talented receiver core, the secondary of potential opponents, the Offensive Coordinator, and everything from the type of shoes he has to the greenness of the grass.

Hey, no one can say....

your glass is not half full! The obvious aside… once Stafford is established, we will most definitely have the best quarterback in the division.

That Stafford also has the fewest games lost

for similar reasons, I choose this username. We should also pick Billy Sims. Don’t care if hes 55 now, hes just that much more of a grizzled NFL vet.

He just started working with me (a Bears fan) about a week ago and has not stopped writing "Lions 16-0, Bears 0-16" and "Go Lions" on my message board in my office. I introduced him to your blog today – hope you didn’t mind.

Hello everyone, my names’ Tim, born in farmington hills, and my screen name is just a product of sarcasm rather than a hidden chicago agenda. Sorry to cue the conspiracy theorists, Matt Millen has the IQ of a squirrel. Anyone else think the lions should just wear the plain jane honolulu blue and silver uni’s all season too?

(BEARS FAN)

it is always welcome to bring in a new lions fan to ‘THE PRIDE’ especially after a season like we had last year …we need improvement on every end from front office/players/and FANS

GOOD TO HEAR MORE THAN 1 LIONS FAN IS GIVING YOU CRAP FOR BEING A BEARS FAN HAHA

absolutely...

It’s actually kind of surprising and refreshing. We live in Charleston, SC and work for a company of about 100 people, have less than a dozen NFL fans in the office and three are Bears fans, two are Lions fans! We had a couple more Bears fans there, but they have since left.

I actually like your teams off-season so far. I played center at Warwick in High School with Mike Vick (yup he touched my butt), and we played against Hampton and your new WR Ronald Curry. Curry was an amazing QB then, he was actually the BIG name the one year I played with Vick. I think he was lost in Raider Land and is a solid pick up. I could definitely see Curry running the wildcat for you guys.

It’s inevitable, I was trying to disguise my fear as sarcasm…The Vikings are going to be a powerhouse, lets hope their defense breaks down with the Williams’ being out for a couple games.

even if/when he becomes 1

What do the Vikes have behind him? If you go over to the norsemen they all HATE T-jack and Rosey palms. They are so beleaving that Favre will take them to their first Superbowl win that they are very blinderd about the whole situation.

I LOVE IT!!!

perhaps not the best statistical model, but I hardly care. After having the rest of the NFL constantly shoving that W-L statistic in my face all year, it’s good to see ANY numbers that relate some, more positive, message.

by myPride on Jun 14, 2009 9:41 AM EDT reply actions

It's true

The Bears have 0 talented receivers for Cutler to throw to. Minnesota has 0 talented QB’s to throw the ball…I’d take Drew Stanton over Rosenfels and Jackson…those are 2 terrible QB’s. Minnesota would kill to get Culpepper back. Aaron Rodgers is good, better than Stafford and Culpepper are right now. BUT Detroit’s WR’s and TE are WAY better than Green Bay’s (6-10). So I have to agree that Detroit’s passing game is far superior to the other teams in the NFC North. Minnesota has the best RB in AP, K. Smith is slightly better than Forte… Both had 8TD’s, Forte had 260 more yards, BUT Smith had 80 fewer carries… and Green Bay of course is dead last with whichever of the scrub RB’s they decide to throw out there.
