Which division has the best? Part 2: NFC North
Ok, I will be making a all star team form each division. Starters and Backups. Based on comments I might tweak the teams a little. After the teams are finished we will vote the best through the worst. Each week we vote which all star team gets booted when they get booted. The team with the most votes each week played the team with the least. Then the second most vs the second least and etc. Then we vote off who would has the least chance. Here's the NFC North!
Edited!
QB-
Starter- Jay Cutler, Backup- Aaron Rodgers, Bench- Brett Farve
RB
Starters- Adrian Peterson, Matt Forte, Backups- Ryan Grant, Chester Taylor, Kevin Smith
FB
Starter- Korey Hall, Backup- Jason Mckie

Okay... I've got beefs everywhere but I'll start with the obvious...
Greg Jennings over Calvin Johnson for the best receiver in the NFC North??? Dude, you’re gonna catch some heat over that one here.
Donald Driver is much, much better than Berrian. And Northcutt and Hester should not even be on this list… but, I’ll give you that the WR talent in the NFC North is pretty poor. Packers first four receivers are better than either of those two. I wouldn’t be afraid to throw a Percy Harvin in there regardless of experience. What about Bryant Johnson… easily better than Nortcutt, Hester and Wade.
At tackle, Janson’s not even a starter. If you’re going to put a Lion in there, put one that starts. As for Orlando Pace, he’s a huge question mark and not even guaranteed to start. Remember, they drafted Chris Williams last year.
How about E.J. Henderson over Larry Foote… seriously? Henderson’s not all that great – check his game film.
Tommie Harris and Kevin Williams are both way better than Pat Williams. Pat Williams is big, but his skills are somewhat diminished.
Okay, I think that’s enough. I feel like I’m being overly mean, now. But this list needs some work.

Agree with the above posters
and I’d also add that I don’t think that Sims is currently one of the three best LBs in the division. I’d actually swap him with Greenway.
So basically what Orwell was saying was, "it's not perfect, but I'll take it."

Sims did have a bad season
But that’s more an indication of the Lions Defence than his talents. I still hold him in high regard within the division, especially since he’s got Foote and Peterson helping him now.

add DELMAS
why not add DELMAS to the list as well ….the NFC North isnt the strongest division and if we are not considering experience for the starting list why not add DELMAS to the mix he has shown good ball skills and should be a much much better Saftey than the LIONS have had in the past Decade…

As much as I like Delmas
Until he plays a game, I can’t support that argument. I agree with your statement and I truly believe he will be the better player but I have no substance to back up that claim until he gets experience under his belt. I have the same problem with Pettigrew. I want very badly to say that he’ll be better than any of the TE’s listed but I have nothing to back it up.

2. Have no clue who Larry Foot or Cliff Avril are
3. Could care less who plays on the Lions… ‘because their the Lions’
4. Know the name “Jon Jansen”, but do not realize that he will not start at Tackle for the Lions.
Try reading up on ALL the teams of the NFC North… Being ignorant of the ‘0-16’ team…. well… makes you look ignorant.

First, I applaud you coming back to back-up your post. Second, you are obviously not a Lion’s fan, so why are you posting here – on a Lion’s blog – expecting not to be ripped, when you’re not very knowledgeable about the Lion’s roster?
As stated, Jon Jansen is a back-up on your list. But our point is that he is a back-up on the Lions! If you are going to use a tackle from the Lions… use Backus or Cherilus – STARTERS.
Not sure what you meant by “Gosh, you guys when 0-16, you guys can still read (hopefully).” I assume that you meant that we didn’t get that you put Jansen as a back-up on your list. Oh, we did get it. It was just dumb, that’s all.

A bit off topic...Why is Al Harris speaking highly of the Lions and their staff?
Anything seem strange about this, or is it just me? Wikipedia shows that this is Harris’ last year in Green Bay.
Why would you compliment a divisional rival like that?
What do the Lion’s have to trade for Harris that the Packers need? Stanton?
Or am I just reading too far into this.
by BIGWalt2990 on Jul 17, 2009 4:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Reading too far, but...
That’s an intriguing thought… getting Harris. He’s still a great player. I can’t believe I’m saying this, because I’m typically against giving up draft picks, but I’d give a fourth or maybe a third to get him right now.
That’s my insecurity about our secondary coming through again.

Stanton? As in your backup QB Stanton? I don’t think so. I would take any of our 3 QB’s now over him. Probably a 4th round pick or 5th round pick, Thompson loves his draft pickss. I doubt we would trade him in the first place though.

I actually live in MN, I know ironic that I’m not a Viqueens fan. It does but, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if we lost him. When he was out last year our nickle back Tramon Williams came in and played very well. He ended up with like 5 ints, and only started in about 8 games, and was the nickle back in all the rest, so that’s a pretty good number.

Brian Brohm is better than Drew Stanton??
I must say that I cannot concur……Brohm will be lucky to make the team in GB this year, and Stanton would definitely be at least the 3rd QB in GB. Personally I would say that Stanton is also far superior to Matt Flynn. I don’t know how you can say that a QB from Louisiana State or even Louisville is better than any QB that has come out of Michigan State University. Brohm was a 2nd rounder out of Louisville, and he might not make the team this year. Flynn was a 7th rounder….not exactly great depth there in GB. Good thing that Rodgers seems pretty tough.
No offense packallday…..but neither of the Packer backups could have beaten The U of M the way Drew Stanton did. Drew is underrated in my opinion, and has not been coached well to this point.
by KDawg on Jul 18, 2009 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stanton just needs a chance to play with a first team offense for more than 1 play in the red zone.

IF
he makes it through preseason then more than likely the coaches like what they see. Becuase QB vets are starting to pop up after being released. There will be a couple more before preseason is done I am sure.

Huh?
I agree neither might be better then him now, but after 2-3 years I think both will be. I don’t understand the logic as far as what college all the players have come from. Are you referring to Minnesota or Michigan when you say U of M. Regardless, I’m pretty sure Matt Flynn’s national championship team would crush Minnesota or Michigan. Brohm’s team was never very great but he was one of the best QB prospects in last years draft.

My bad
You are correct Sean…..it was Jeff Smoker who was the starting QB at “Clockgate” 2001. For some reason I was thinking that was Stanton.
Packallday, I was referring to the University of Michigan…..but I was mistaken as to who the QB was.
I must have been in the Kool-aid the day I wrote that post too….LSU has produced 2 good QB’s in my memory…..Russell and Flynn. However, I still think Drew Stanton is just as good as both of them. I remember another National Champion Qb out of Florida (2006) named Chris Leak. Where is he now? Winning a national title does not make you a good QB…..it just means you were on a great team.
Drew Stanton made Chris Leak look like a HS QB that year before the NFL draft. I watched them in a QB competition, and Stanton was the most accurate and mobile QB of any of them. If he had the right coaching and the opportunity, I think he could become a good QB in the NFL. I also think he is better than Brohm and Flynn. You have your opinion, and I have mine.
by KDawg on Jul 20, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haha
Haha sorry I was so confused about your post, and the talk about U of M, and then Stanton beating MSU. But I am curious about one thing.. Flynn and Brohm both could potentially become starting QB’s in the NFL one day (though it probably won’t be for us) so do you think he will eventually become the same? And if so why didn’t you guys just go with him instead if drafting Stafford?
by packallday555 on Jul 21, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is the 6 million dollar question man.....
I do think Drew Stanton could surface as a starter elsewhere. I am one person who does not feel that Drew Stanton has had a fair shot in Detroit. That may not be the popular opinion around here, but it is mine. Why did we draft Stafford if we had a guy on the roster who could be the starter? I would speculate that it is because we had the #1 pick. I kept hearing "You can’t pass on the chance to draft a “franchise QB” if you have the number one pick and there is one available" prior to the 09 draft. Apparently the Lions FO felt that Matt Stafford was that kind of guy.
Drew Stanton was drafted in the 2nd round in 2007….to be a backup to Kitna. We had J.T. O’Sullivan at the time, and J.T. ended up being #2 behind Kitna with Stanton getting injured in the pre-season. In 08 we had 5 different QBs on the roster at various times (Kitna, Orlovsky, Culpepper, Stanton, and Henson). Kitna was the obvious starter at the beginning of 08, but when Orlovsky took over I didn’t understand why Stanton didn’t get his chance.
The knock on Stanton seems to be his ability to throw a tight spiral (which is really odd), which had made him inconsistent in practices. I think it could be a confidence issue….which is in turn a coaching issue.
by KDawg on Jul 21, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow
I didn’t know you guys used a 2nd round pick on Stanton. I guess I don’t understand the drafting of Stafford then. I mean Stanton is only 2 years in, and from what you’ve told me he hasn’t ever gotten a fair chance. A QB most of the time, needs more then 2 years to reach his full potential, and needs to start a fair amount of guys in order to get that experience. Now that you took Stafford it’s kind of like tossing Stanton, and the second round pick you used to draft him right down the drain.
From what I’ve gathered since being on this blog, it sounds like your biggest weakness is at the o-line position. You would think since this years draft was so talented at the o-line position, you either would have taken J. Smith at #1 or traded down and taken A. Smith or Monroe. Especially since there were questions as to whether or not Stafford was really ready to go to the NFL. I guess there is nothing anyone can do about it now though, hopefully for the front office’s sake Stafford produces.

Sorry Sean, but I really liked the pick at the time
And I am a Wolverines fan all the way……
I remember thinking Stanton was a guy who always found a way to win. I watched him make Chris Leak look pathetic before the draft that year too. Stanton was more accurate and more mobile than any QB in that competition…..I wish I could remember what competition it was….lol
Again, I think he has not had the proper coaching or a fair chance to prove himself worthy of being the starter in Detroit.
by KDawg on Jul 22, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Based on needs at the time, it was a terrible pick
The one player I wanted the most was David Harris, as he would have instantly stepped up as our MLB (like he is now for the Jets). If we were going to get a QB, we would have been better off waiting. Look at Trent Edwards. He didn’t go until the end of the third-round and is already a starter in this league.
Pride of Detroit, SB Nation's Lions Blog
by Sean Yuille on Jul 23, 2009 3:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is a perfect example
I would be willing to bet that Drew Stanton would be the starter in Buffalo right now, if he were there competing with Edwards (and Losman previously). Like I said, he hasn’t been given a chance in Detroit and his talent has been wasted by poor coaching to this point.
by KDawg on Jul 23, 2009 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The problem with Stanton and his second round draft status. The Lion’s coaching, even up to this point, doesn’t believe he has the talent to be a starter.
Which I think is CRAP. If you really want to see what a guy has, put him in a Real situation with Real opposition(more than once of course). Then let the adrenaline rush take hold. That’s what I see in Drew.

potential has yet to be realized. Hopefully the OL picks up thier play and the D picks up thier play. Smith didn’t start all the games last season and we were consistantly behind by more than 1 TD which forces us to pass more and run less. If things can be put together this year then Smith should show his true potential this year.
