Chris Cooley from MMQB at SI.com
Cooley gives his opinion about when QBs are ready to start in the NFL. Now I personally consider Cooley a bit of a kook, but I mean that in a good way. The world needs more free thinkers like this.
2. I think all the talk about making young quarterbacks wait their turn and learn before they go in the game is B.S. The best way to get better at something is doing it, so if they're ready to play, let 'em play. I know teams are very considerate about a player's psyche, but if a quarterback can't handle the scrutiny of throwing a pick in his first season, how is he going to handle it throughout his career? Might as well find out.

Rookie QBs
Meh, a QB’s salary is a sunk cost once the contract is signed. Presumably it is based on expectations over several years. Sitting a rookie QB for the first half of a season doesn’t cost anything. True there comes the time that the only way Staff will get better is to play. But there is a ton of new stuff surrounding the game that a rookie has to adjust to just so he can eliminate the distraction and focus on the game itself. Staff will adjust quickly, but there is no way you start him Game 1 if he is not the best QB on the roster just because he has a big salary. I don’t expect him to start before Game 9 unless DC either gets injured or just stinks it up. That said I don’t expect DC to stay healthy past game 8.

MCD, That is the bone of contention here........Is he the best QB by Week #1?
Anyone who suggests any player should start just because they earn the most money, is not thinking clearly. To me, the guy who earns the most money, if not starting, should be worrying about getting cut.

A bit oversimplified
That may be true for veterans or positions where you are expected to have an immediate impact, but we’re talking a rookie QB here. We can speculate like hell but won’t really know much until we see these guys perform some in pre-season. Who will be best on Day 1? It will be close, I can tell you that and that may well mean Staff gets the start. I think that if you invest #1 pick money into a QB like Staff, you (as coach or GM) are definitely thinking he will be the starter at some point in the season. This is no Favre/Rodgers situation. But it doesn’t look bad if he isn’t starting that 1st game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see DC start but Staff get in each game at some point until Staff is the permanent #1.

Sean, Thanks for putting this post up here.....one question though.
How do you blockquote the part of Cooley’s article that I put in the body of the post? I bolded it because I did not see any other way to show it was part of the article.

For a FanShot, you would want to make it a quote instead of a link
I’ll change it for you.

Or not
Looks like I can’t change it. But next time put choose quote and you will be able to highlight what he says instead of the link.

Ahhh... thanks North for digging up these old bones again!
I like Chris Cooley now, I guess, because he’s got my sentiment down.
Shall we start Round 3 on the Stafford-Culpepper War? I’ll dub it “SCW III”. I’m armed and ready. All I need now is KDawg. Looks like “Dawgs” run in packs here, though… (see MusicCItyDawg’s response above).
I guess I’ll have to post a sign on the front page… “No Dawgs Allowed!”
Kidding… of course. Why do I still feel the need to say “kidding”? KDawg… we’re past that, right?

Drew, I am just the messenger here. DO NOT SHOOT OR SICK THE DAWGS ON ME
I am only reporting history as it happens. I did not have any previous contact with Cooley to prod him into giving his opinion.
Not sure if he was opining on the Jets situation more than the Lions.

*GAG*
You guys sound about as smart as Chris Cooley….LOL!! “I’m kidding” (no really I am…:o))
Yes Drew, we are past the point where I think you are attacking me with every word that you spit off of your acid soaked tongue. However, in all honesty I really think the argument is moot until we see what happens. You know what I think, and I know what you think. We agree to a point, and we disagree to a point. It’s just no fun anymore….:o)
F Chris Cooley right in his freshly fisted A-hole…..when was the last time that guy even said something that was coherent, let alone intelligent? So the guy came out of his alchoholic, I love Ryan Seacrest haze for a few seconds to comment on his newest man crush in Mark Sanchez. The fact that he generalized only speaks volumes to his lack of brain power….;o)
LOL…..in all reality the guy scored a 32 on the Wonderlic….and I know full well that he is smart. However, he could be Einstein commenting on the theory of relativity and I would call him an idiot if he believed that the Einstein-Rosen bridge was even a remote possibility. But let’s not compare worms to wormholes….lol.
So Chris Cooley thinks that hands-on is the best way to learn….well I have news for him. Not everyone learns something best by doing it, but rather they get a better understanding of something by seeing it done and being told how it works. Is Matt Stafford a right brained guy or a left brained guy? How the hell should I know? Am I his psychologist now? (I wish I were, cause i would be getting paid MAD cash). It all boils down to the same conclusion we came to before….if he is the best man for the QB job from day 1, he starts. If not, then he watches Daunte from the sideline with a clipboard in hand.
The end….:o)

That's the KDawg response I've come to know and love!
I’m just egging you on a bit. I agree… there really isn’t any room for discussion on SCW III until training camp heats up and the pre-season action begins. Until then, I’ll keep my acid-soaked tongue quiet on the warfront.
The one thing I will comment on though, is your take on learning from the sidelines versus learning on the field. It’s an individual thing mind you, but Stafford has been playing football for probably the last 10 years or so – nonstop. No, not at this level, but it’s not like he’s Matt Cassel and a big question mark because he hasn’t started since high school. The dude’s played a lot of football over the years and “I think” the best way to handle him is not to stall him by taking him out of that groove. So I say, unless he appears overmatched by the speed of the game, let him play. Big surprise, eh?
As for your take on Cooley… not sure what he did to you, but it must have been awful. Did he steal your identity, molest your dog or leave a lit bag of something nasty on your front porch? Holy cow…

I don’t know….to be honest, i wasn’t sure if you were joking in the last paragraph. But it’s all good…..I’m laughing…;o)
