Lions to be blitz happy?

New Lions Defensive Coordinator, Gunther Cunningham, is set to have the Lions blitz on 40% of the team's defensive plays in the coming season. This is very troubling for any number of reasons.

The first being if the Lions are going to blitz this much, it seems that opposing Offensive Coordinators will have an easy time picking apart the weak Lions secondary. More than that though, the Lions are not good enough to blitz this much.

Think about it, who is going to blitz? Is Cunningham going to use one of his linebackers to blitz? The Linebacker corps may be the only strength on this defense and Cunningham is going to use one of them to go all blitz happy. Does that make any sense?

Combine...

A crazy old Defensive coordinator that has been required to run a conservative defensive scheme for 4 years, with a Defense that lacks a decent DLine….

=Blitzy Defense.

We shall see

I think we can blitz, we just didn’t get the chance last season. It’s true, our linebackers are the strength, so having Peterson and Sims sprinting from the outside should be good. Plus, Avril and White & Devries are solid edge rushers, given the chance, they can make sacks.
While it may allow a QB to find gaps in our secondary, it should at least cut down his time, as opposing QB’s seemed to have way too much of it last season. As far as I’m concerned, the more blitz’s the better.

Pre-season

the lions were blitzing left and right…. but when the season came, nada. It’s almost like Barry thought he could fool the competition into thinking that they would be blitzing all the time…lol.

by CLF on Jul 15, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Is it a coincidence then that we were undefeated in the pre-season

Probably not, but it sure would’ve helped if we blitzed more often during 2008.

I say go for it.....

….its better then the 10% Marenelli did……That secondary wasent picked apart was it?……It doesnt matter if they blitz or not….id rather see them blitz and take the chance that they might get a 2nd and 20 and have a chance to stop the other team.

by BennieBladesFan on Jul 15, 2009 9:41 AM EDT reply actions

Yes...

…our secondary WAS picked apart, left and right. Not to mention, we couldn’t stop the run. Worst defense in the league for a reason.

The problem is...

we’ll have to blitz to get pressure. It’s not a matter of whether we can or not, it’s simply a matter of “we have to”. Unless Avril turns out a 12-15 sack breakout year and is constantly in the backfield, the Lions – more specifically, Cunningham – will have to come up with clever ways to apply pressure. This was Marinelli’s big faux pas last year… not coming up with clever ways to blitz. It wasn’t in his scheme and he wasn’t breaking from his scheme. Schwartz and Cunningham will not be stubborn about it. From everything I can tell, Schwartz is willing to bend his scheme to whatever works. That’s a very good thing for Detroit. Now it’s up to the players to execute.

Remember, we’ve got Peterson and I think Sims is quick enough to get there as well – he’s just never really been used in that capacity before. Peterson will be a good decoy for the Sim’s blitzes…. you know, have Peterson rush the line, then drop back into coverage, while Sims bullrushes from the outside instead. Also, don’t forget about corner and safety blitzes. Delman, Buchanon and Keith Smith are all fast enough and sure enough tacklers to make it to the backfield. The Lions will just have to be clever enough to slide coverage and disguise the package.

But once again, I just can’t see the D-Line getting consistent pressure, so they’ll have to blitz.

by DrewsLions on Jul 15, 2009 11:15 AM EDT reply actions

Yepper...

Nothing wrong with that. Ravens, Steelers, Eagles… all apply heavy blitz packages during ‘thin’ years. That’s one of the reasons I liked the Cunningham hire.

He’ll have freedom to show his true genius this year.

by CLF on Jul 15, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Blitz, Blitz, Blitz

In my view the past 8 years we’ve given up yards and big plays blitzing or not, I’d rather seem them go after the QB and give up the yards rather than not and still giving them up. I also think Gunner will use his players better than used in the past.

by msivits on Jul 15, 2009 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

Couldn't agree more...

We were giving up yards in big bunches last year running a conservative D. It is about time that we attempt to dictate the pace a little. The “bend but don’t break” only works when you have superior athletes that know the system. Blitzing is used a strategic shot in the arm on specific plays, in specific areas of the field. We had the worst defense in the league (worst ever, according to some analysts)!!??

If you shorten the time that a QB has, he will run into trouble. Peyton Manning is one of the few guys that will kill you if you blitz too much. He will get the ball out of there quick and make you pay. Other than that, most of the QB’s will succumb to the pressure.

Too much can be too much, but I think that we all agree that last year was too little (of everything).

by The Maestro on Jul 16, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

What blitzing does...

…is it causes confusion for the Offense, and pressure on the QB. This generally will lead to missed assignments, hurried passes, and hopefully some sacks and turnovers!

Sure we may get burned a few times, but we should come out ahead if can keep the pressure on. Remember we have Megatron who will burn the other team back…

The bottom line is Marinelli couldn’t coach his way out of a wet paper bag.
Gunther worked for a head coach in KC, who is ultimately responsible – (and gone.)
And Schwartz is tough AND analytical. He’ll make Marinelli look like a high school coach when it’s all said and done. The author of the article was just clueless…and wrong.

This is a true new beginning for the Lions…

"Up to 40%"

5% of the time can be “up to” 40%.

by BIGWalt2990 on Jul 15, 2009 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

Sometimes just the threat of a blitz......

Can make offensive lines make un-needed adjustments and give the DL a 1/2 a step even when the blitz isn’t coming. It will also make opposing Offensive coordinaters spend time preparing for the many blitz packages Gunner will throw at them. Yes in the grand scheme of things the blitz will help our defense improve.

by Runnin' Rebel on Jul 15, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

It'll work

We have a great young speedy edge rusher in Cliff Avril, who will probably bulk up this season. Then we have an established vet in Dewayne White, possibly the best guy on the line. Grady Jackson will command a double team, allowing Clfif and White to go one and one, as well as freeing up linebackers to make plays then you have DeVries coming in for stints. The personnel is adequate, but a great defensive coordinator will be able to cover up deficiencies with the right scheme.

blitz everyone...

Multi-packages. Safety blitzs. Corner Blitzs. Hell blitz the punter and cheerleaders( if we ever get some). Be aggressive not passive. The Lions were way to predictable last year. I would love to see some " Controlled Chaos", from our Defense this year. From what I have read or heard in interveiws. Players get fired up when the DC calls a blitz.

Bishop why can’t we have real cheerleaders? Is it because Sr. has a ba problem with minors? or is it because this is how cheep he actually is? I mean damn w are lions that have no “Pride” what the F*ck ya know. We want them to play like men but only have girls cheering for them. . . .Duhhhhh

We do have cheerleaders

They play on the offensive line on 3rd and 1

Dream a little dream

You can only blitz consistently when you have corners with superior skills – See Philadelphia Eagles. Otherwise, instead of getting a “sack”, you get “burned”. With the Lions rolling with two mediocre 30 something corners, don’t get your hopes to high. Stick with me kid, I’ll teach you about this game yet.

Thank you.

by TCLion on Jul 21, 2009 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Buchanon is 28

Sure, we can’t constantly blitz, but it’s better than dropping back in zone all the time, which happened last year.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

by Hyperion Ecta on Jul 21, 2009 3:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Buchannon is mediocre

His stints in Houston and Tampa Bay were remarkably unremarkable. Still lives off the hype of his draft status with the Raiders. Personally, I think Keith Smith is a better option.

I agree we can’t drop back all the time, and blitzes will be called, but to what effect will be determined by the corner play. If our corners give a deep cushion to make up for a lack of speed, any qb worth his salt will make a quick out on the fly, and make us pay.

To be a great blitzing team, you have to invest draftwise in corners, it’s the only way to go. The best corners out there never hit free agency til their past their prime. The Eagles do this regularly both in the draft and via trade to great result. To date, the Lions have not taken a CB in the first or second rounds since Terry Fair.

Thank you.

by TCLion on Jul 21, 2009 4:59 AM EDT up reply actions

If we don't blitz, whats the alternative?

I guess the lions could go back to the famed cover 2 or just drop everyone into coverage and give the QB all day to throw. Come on dude. What else do you need to blitz? I get that the d-line is a bit suspect but if the lions would have had a stellar d-line, we might not have had a 0-16 season.
I agree with all the above posters, blitz all day long. By disrupting the QB, you disrupt the whole offense. Go get him Gunner.

by Lead Hunter on Jul 15, 2009 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

Blitz

If you blitz 40% of the other time the opposing QB will be so rattled he will swear it was 80%. With a really poor d-line what else can you do? God I miss big baby. Between him and Grady we would have 1 full time DT.

by NYLIONSFAN on Jul 16, 2009 7:27 AM EDT reply actions

Read more into it.

How many of those 40% are going to be on shortyardage situations? And in our division with 2 young studs in the backfield in Chi and Minn how many run blitzes are in those games. We need to blitz as much as possibly. Last year there were plays on third down of over 15 yards completed for first downs in almost every game/half. We need to blitz on downs like that so that the QB has to check down to the safty valve.

by davis0169 on Jul 16, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

It could work

But the secondary is weak that it might create a fatal flaw that will allow other teams to score alot. But its worth a try in the preseason

I Have Spoken.

by The_Fan on Jul 16, 2009 6:03 PM EDT reply actions

so....

you say we have a weak secondary? Well in that case wouldn’t it be better to give the WR’s less time to get open. I think so. If the secondary is weak you want to make them cover longer? Come on think things through. Blitz’s give the QB and WR’s less time to make a play. And if our DL is weak the only option is to put more LB’s, Safeties, and CB’s on the blitz. Mix it up confuse the Offenseand we have a chance this year to hold teams under 21 points in the 1st half.

Blitzing

I love hearing we are FINALLY going to blitz!!!!! With how pathetic our Dline is we need to blitz a lot in order to create pressure. Do you seriously think Chuck Darby is going to do anything special? I know I don’t think he is worth a fiddlers F***. During our Tampa 2 fiasco how many times did you see us blitz? Not often, it was darn near the same zone coverage play almost every single play it seemed like.

For those of you who think it is a mistake to blitz our linebackers your insane. That is partially why we got Peterson was due to his pass rush abilities. He is far better at pass rushing and pressuring the QB than that waste of skin Cory Redding. The Lions of old had a vision. It was to offer fat contracts to failures such as Redding and remember that turd Kalimba Edwards, those two bums.

In order for this team to be competitive we need to get another decent stop gap DT other wise we are in for another season of utter disappointment.

by Usmarine0341 on Jul 17, 2009 12:41 AM EDT reply actions

I agree

But I hope we can produce a better pass rush than last year, even without any more FA signings. If we improve just a little bit, we will win all of those “close” games that we lost last year.

by KDawg on Jul 18, 2009 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions

can win 7 i think. More than that would be a cinderella season.
