Fantasy Football

Since I have gotten no message from Sean saying I could not post fantasy football related stuff, I am going to go ahead and talk about my fantasy team here.  I have been involved in a Yahoo Fantasy Football keeper league, with 7 close friends of mine (8 team league), for over 10 years now.  I have not won this league since 2002 (which was my 5th consecutive title....I won the first 5 years straight....lol).  I finished 2nd last year, and I had a pretty stacked team (on paper).  I would like to post my roster for all of you guys to see, and then I would like to hear your opinions on the 5 guys I should keep.  I am allowed only 5 keepers, but I own the rights to every man on my roster until the league draft occurs.  I can make trades for players or draft picks.  I will be drafting 7th this year (7 of 8).  You will see my roster after the jump.  I am currently leaning toward keeping Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson, Jason Witten, and Tony Gonzalez.  What do you guys think?

Hopefully this lines up right....:o)

Okay, this is who I'd keep

McNabb- I expect a big season from Philly and I think Donovon will be a big part of that.
Andre Johnson- He’s just too good not to be of use.
Jason Witten- Most likely Dallas top receiver now, so his production should go up.
Chris Johnson- May take a sophomore slump, but I think his pace and explosiveness may help overcome that slightly.

The last spot is between Gonzo, Slaton and Westbrook.

Gonzalez- Brilliant TE, but I think the Falcons might not be as strong this year. He’ll be productive, he’s too good not to, but will it be productive enough?
Slaton- Like Chris Johnson, I see a slight slump this season.
Westbrook- Part of my expectations of Philly going well…as long as he doesn’t get injured.

I’d lean toward Gonzo, reliability is important I think. Anyway, that’s just my 2 cents, hope you get a Lions player in your draft.

Speaking of fantasy football

Can’t wait for the POD fantasy to get up and running. Should be great fun.

Thanks again HE

CJ and Kevin Smith are both keepers for other teams….so I won’t get them. However, if I drop Gonzo or Witten, and can’t get them back, Pettigrew might be an option as a sleeper. I am also considering Stafford if he doesn’t go right away. It’s all offense in this league….not sure I have room for a Lion’s 2nd or 3rd WR or say Maurice Morris even.

I have fairly high hopes for Bryant Johnson this year

He should be one-on-one for most of the season so I’m hoping he can manage a career year..something similar to what Furrey did in ’06.

I agree HE...

But I’d keep Slaton in that last slot. There are a lot of people thinking that Houston might be a decent team this year and Slaton is a big part of it. Houston just doesn’t get much national attention, but I saw Slaton in a few games last year and he looks like a keeper.

by DrewsLions on Jul 2, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I has Slaton last year on my team

And he was descent, but N.O. offence is way better and Thomas is going to be the featured back near the goal line where as Slaton gets hardley any looks they kept bringing in someone else who’s name escapes me now but it wasn’t the old packer, who got cut.

by davis0169 on Jul 2, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You make a good point Davis.....

But will he still split carries with Reggie Bush? Slaton is definitely the #1 in Houston….and if he rushes for almost 1300 yards again, he is going to score TD’s. He is more than a goal line back. Pierre Thomas played in 15 games last year, only coming on strong in yardage production after Reggie Bush was injured. Slaton played all 16 games for Houston, and was pretty consistently getting me 15 pts. At times he was explosive too. If you take away the 31 fantasy points that Pierre Thomas gained for his return yards, he would have only gotten 168 pts to Slaton’s 250. I picked up Pierre Thomas for a plug in guy last year, and he was very good down the stretch. However, I can’t see him being a keeper over Slaton. In fact, he would probably go un-drafted in our league unless it is known that he will be the full time starter. I appreciate your opinion though, and I will consider all ideas.

by KDawg on Jul 3, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We play by different rules brother Kdawg

I keep forgetting that most leagues are yardage leagues, Our Money league is a TD only league and while Slaton had quite a few big games for me also last year I am not use to playing in a yardage league. For us it’s way different but we have been playing it the same way for over 17 years now. For us the farther out the TD is the more points we get or if a positional player scores a unpositional TD it’s worth double points. Like if a RB catches a ball and scores ect. ect. So in our league it would be a no brainer Westbrook until he gets hurt of course. But you are right Thomas does have to split carries with BUSH Beer.

by davis0169 on Jul 4, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just an example for you

1-9 yards is worth 6 points 10-39 yards is 9 points anything over 40 is 12 points and ofcourse if it’s an untraditional TD double the points. Vick was a Beast in our League. With Kickers 1-39 is 3 40-49=5 anything over 50=10 so you could see why It would be a coin flip in our league. The BOMB is when you have a QB and a RB that catches alot of screens cause then the TD is kind of worth triple the points. The funny thing is Kickers are the higest point scorers in our league traditionally but no one ever drafts them until the mid to late rounds and Dome kickers almost always go first.Unless you have 1 kicker in Denver.

I like Slaton

I just hope he can hold onto that form he showed last season. I also agree that Houston might be decent, possible even playoff bound. They are in a very tough division though, it would take a massive effort to make the postseason.

I would keep

Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson, Donovan McNabb, and Witten. Slaton has no competition with Green gone, McNabb will bounce back with DJax, Maclin, and an improved running game. Westbrook and McCoy will keep defenses honest, but will split carries when Westy returns from his inevitable injury. Witten is option 1A in Dallas, and Roy Roy Roy is the most accomplished WR on their roster (unless Michael Irvin finds a beast on 4th and Long), so Witten>Gonzo.

The Johnsons are elite options at their position, and don’t need much explanation. If this is a 2TE league, package Gonzo for a better pick n the 2nd or 3rd round.

I'm so ahead of my time, my parents haven't met yet

by YakAttack on Jul 2, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let us bow our heads

Rev you have to keep Mcnabb thats a given, I can’t see you giving up C johnson . . .like I did last year, dumb asssss but I was hit by the injury bug real bad. You don’t want to get rid of A johnson he’s to good. I would keep Witten over Gonzo he’s younger and Romo looks for him when ever he can. It’s a toss up between Westbrook who when healthy is a top 5 back and I’m going to say Piere Thomas, he came on REAL strong at the end of last season and seems to be thee RB in NO and that high powered Offence.

by davis0169 on Jul 2, 2009 9:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Pierre Thomas

You could be on to something there. Thomas might provide the Saints with a strong running game.

I've heard rumbles about him

Taking over the majority of the carries in NO. They never had much of a running game but Thomas was always a bright spot, he’s definitely a fan favorite, and could end up being a surprise.

I found this Keeper League ranking list on Walterfootball.com

http://walterfootball.com/fantasy2009keeper.php

According to this you have three of the top ten keepers; Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, and Andre Johnson.
Brandon Marshall at #27 and Jason Witten at #44.

Those were the five guys I recommended. Gonzalez, McNabb and Westbrook are getting up there in age. Stick with the younger guys.

by NorthLeft12 on Jul 3, 2009 6:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Consider..

FF Talk!

To really answer your question, I’d need to have all your league rules (especially starting lineups!) and a chance to glance at the other team’s rosters. Northleft makes perfect sense without knowing more.

Consider, however, that in your league, you only keep 5 players from one year to the next. Your QB is weak in an 8 team league. WR is not a strength.

I’m assuming you only play two RB’s. While Westbrook is now 30 years old, his 2009 season will likely be as good as your young guns. And, it’s possible that someone may have a mancrush on one of those fine young men. Shop them around. If you can significantly upgrade QB or WR, then I’d jump on it. Your RB position will be just as solid in 2009, and with only keeping 5 from your large roster, you will easily have that many worth holding onto next year.

Same with TE, if you only start 1. Shop Witten. If you can significantly upgrade QB or WR, then again go for it.

by jimoska on Jul 3, 2009 6:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You would both keep Marshall, even though he has off field issues?

He may face a suspension this year, he wants out of Denver (has said he hates Denver), and Jay Cutler is no longer in Denver. I know he is ranked high, and he would be very valuable if traded, but Denver is claiming they will not allow him to leave.

Jimoska…..I will post the rules to the league here for you. I typically play 2 RBs and a WR/RB flex (I like RB’s).

If I followed Walter Football, I would be keeping Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson, Pierre Thomas, and Brandon Marshall. Since I can start 3 RB’s, Pierre Thomas might not be a bad option if he is going to carry most of the load in NO. I think shopping Marshall now, selling high, may be the best move. If I can land a solid QB for Marshall, then that would be my keeper. Then the question becomes, do I keep Pierre Thomas or Jason Witten? If you really want to see everyone else’s final rosters, I’ll post them too.

With all the moves Phili made this season I think mcnabb will put up better numbers than he had with T.O.

But do you see my difficulties here? lol….if Brandon Marshall gets traded to a team with a good QB, I have to keep him too…..

Chris Johnson and Andre Johnson are locks…..I have 3 other keeper spots and 7-8 keeper quality players.

bears

I have the bears going to the superbowl even without marshall. Cutler puts them over the top.

by kingdaddylions on Jul 6, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Bears defense holds up

I tend to agree with you. The only thing I am not sure of is who Cutler will have to throw to and how much time will he have to make reads and find open receivers. In Denver, he had a very good offensive line that did not allow a lot of sacks. How will Cutler respond to getting sacked twice as much at a minimum? Cutler was sacked only 11 times last year. Chicago’s O-Line allowed 27 sacks. Devin Hester and Rasheed Davis are their two best WR’s…..sure they have Clark and Olsen, but those two can only do so much. If Forte continues to excel, and if the defense holds up, they might be very good again this year. If Forte hits the sophomore slump and the aging defense falters a bit, they will not win the division let alone a playoff game. If they had a threat like Marshall to add to their running game, then Hester and Davis might have more of an impact, along with the 2 TE’s, and the faltering defense might not be as big of an issue since their offense would likely be unstoppable.

As far as fantasy football and my keepers are concerned, I have to agree that Marshall could be a liability. However, he could pull a Randy Moss and turn into a “good guy” if traded to the right team. I would hate to see that happen if I drop him, and that is just my luck. That said, I think going with the sure things and the safest bets is my best option. The post below by Packallday seems to be quite sound advice. I should probably post the rest of the league’s final rosters from last season. That could change opinions of what I should do.

by KDawg on Jul 6, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey Simba

I mean Kingdaddylions, You have the Bears over Favre and the Vikes? Just curious why no Vikes when everyone has them as the “SEXY” pick. I still think that the Lions are going to win the division but I try to stay on the Kool-aid.

by davis0169 on Jul 11, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta go with

Andre Johnson, Chris Johnson, Jason Witten/Tony Gonzalez, Steve Slaton, and McNabb. The two Johnsons are only improving, as is Slaton. Many people probably don’t know this but the Texans were 2nd in the league in total offense last season. McNabb and Philly look to have a good season next year, especially on offense.

Witten is Romo’s guy. The only thing is one of the things that made him so successful was teams doubling and somtimes triple covering T.O. I don’t think Williams will command that same respect from D’s and I think teams will now be more focused on Witten.

I have heard a lot of people say the Falcons won’t be as good this year and I’m not sure why. Their offense could be one of the best in the game. Ryan at QB. Turner at RB. Mughelli at FB (probably the best run blocking one in the league). White and Jenkins at WR. (White is quickly proving himself as one of the elite ones in the league and Jenkins is a solid #2). And Gonzalez at TE. There aren’t many other teams who compare to them, when looking at the skill player positions. Ryan will only improve, and bringing in Gonzalez is only going to open things up even more. With White commanding double teams because of the threat he poses going deep, things will be open in the middle for Gonzalez. The lost Milloy and Jackson on D but both them are aging and both their play has started to decline. They drafted Jerry at DT, and picked up Mike Peterson in the offseason. I think the Falcons could win 1 or 2 games in the playoffs this year.

Haha sorry I got a little offf track in comparing WItten and Gonzalez. I would say go with Gonzalez. He still can play, and the Falcons offense is going to be a very deadly one.

by packallday555 on Jul 5, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Do you think Westbrook will still out produce the WR's fantasy wise?

He had 176 fantasy points last year and Larry Fitzgerald only had 160 (in my league). I am almost thinking I would rather keep Westbrook over either of the TEs, if I am going to keep McNabb.

McNabb, Westbrook, Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, and Andre Johnson. If Westbrook isn’t going to put up solid numbers ever again (which I somehow doubt), maybe I could shop him for a top tier WR. If I keep him, LeSean McCoy will be on my radar. If I package Westbrook and Marshall, I might be able to get Fitzgerald and Rivers…..thereby dropping McNabb and keeping Rivers, Fitz, Andre Johnson, Chris Johnson, and Steve Slaton…..

That could be a real long shot however….maybe McNabb, Westbrook, and Marshall for Fitzgerald and Rivers would be more realistic.

by KDawg on Jul 6, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm it depends..

How does the scoring the league work? Is it just standard, a point per 10 receiving and rushing yards? If it is then maybe you go with Westbrook, because he is good for at least 60-70 rushing yards, plus 30-40 receiving yards also. The only thing is if you let both those TE’s go wouldn’t you have to pick up a shitty one to replace them? I think trading McNabb, Westbrook, and Marshall for Fitz and Rivers would be a great deal for you. The Chargers O now revolves around Rivers instead of LT and Fitz is arguably the best wr in the game. And by the looks of it the 3rd place team could use a good rb, which you could give him in Westbrook.

How do the starting lineups in your league work? Is it like 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D? I think you also could try and trade McNabb, Westbrook, and Marshall for Manning and Wayne. He has good rb’s but most of them haven’t produced recently (Grant, Johnson, Jackson, Addai). That’s just a thought though, I don’t know whether or not you like Manning.

How many wr’s do you start?

by packallday555 on Jul 8, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry

I realized you posted the scoring right after I had posted this, so just disregard any questions I made referring to scoring.

by packallday555 on Jul 8, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Starting Lineup

Consists of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 WR/TE FLEX, and 1 WR/RB FLEX, along with a K and a team DEF.

I think I would find it very difficult to get Manning and Wayne. I might be able to get Manning, as he has told me he is considering trading him this year, but he is pretty high on Reggie Wayne. I doubt he will keep 2 QBs going into the season, so he will not want McNabb (he is keeping Aaron Rodgers). He might take Westbrook and Marshall for Manning….but he knows as well as I do that I am trying to sell high on Westy and Marshall. He’s already said that Westbrook is always injured, he’s getting older, he could be on the decline etc….and I agree (outside of the fact that he has been a fantasy stud for years). Marshall is a huge question mark as well.

McNabb is ranked higher than Rivers on multiple sites….and the more I think about it, the more I lean toward keeping him. He was 7th in fantasy points in our league last season, and the Eagles are poised for another great year. I do want Fitzgerald, and I think trading Westbrook and Marshall (if they both play like they did last year) is an unfair trade for me. If I do not trade Westbrook, I do not think I will be able to drop him either. I would hate to see him drafted in the top 6, only to haunt me all year. I feel that he is far less of a risk than Marshall. McNabb, Westy, AJ, Chris Johnson, and Slaton wouldn’t be a bad set of keepers….but if I could have McNabb, Fitz, AJ, Chris Johnson, and Slaton, I think it would be even better. A dilemma indeed.

My previous post on fantasy points for Westbrook and Fitzgerald last year was inaccurate. Fitzgerald had 275 pts, while Westbrook had 249 (in 14 games). Marshall had 225…..
This is why I say it would not be a fair trade for me. 474 points for 275……and no room to ask for another player since I would likely just drop them anyway or have to drop another keeper. Rivers had 477 pts last year to McNabb’s 389….a difference of 88 pts. I do not know why McNabb is ranked higher than Rivers. 477 (Rivers) +275 (Fitz) = 752. 249 (Westy) + 389 (McNabb) = 638 for a difference of 114 pts (in the Amani Toomer/Dominic Hixon type range). If I threw Marshall into the mix, I would be giving up 3 players and 111 points for 2 players. However, Rivers and Fitzgerald may prove to garner less risk as well.

Ugh….I hate this type of decision. What would any of you say if I offered you McNabb, Westbrook, and Marshall for Rivers and Fitzgerald and a swap of 1st round picks (I move up 1 spot from 7th pick to 6th)??

by KDawg on Jul 8, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tough question haha

McNabb always seems to be a very good fantasy QB. He is a gunslinger, and Andy Reid loves throwing the ball. Westbrook seems to get hurt a lot, but regardless he always seems to put up very good numbers. Had Cutler not been traded then I would be urging you not to trade Marshall. The guy has a ton of potential, but can Orton get him the ball?? The more I think about, I think it makes sense for you to keep McNabb and Westbrook. McNabb is in a pass first offense, and their offense should be very dynamic this year. Jackson will only improve from last year, and I think Maclin is going to have a great year also. I just don’t think you can let Westbrook go. Sure, he is injury prone but if he stays healthy this year, he will put up BIG numbers. (In 07’ he stayed healthy and put up huge numbers). I would say just keep McNabb, Westbrook, Johnson, Johnson, Slaton.

Haha you gotta love fantasy football.

by packallday555 on Jul 9, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is definitely what I am leaning toward now

Looking back on last year, while my TE’s were almost as good as my WRs (except AJ), they were not as good as any of my RBs or McNabb. I wanted to keep one of them, and I wanted to make sure that my dropped players only go to certain teams. However, it does not look like I will be able to make a satsfactory deal. I can get Romo, but I feel McNabb is better. The owner of Aaron Rodgers said he might be interested in Westbrook for Rodgers…..but then I have 2 QB keepers. If I could get a top tier WR like Fitzgerald (who my brother owns and will not give up….I tried), then I would consider trading Westy in the sell high fashion. I agree with you that Westbrook will put up big numbers if he is healthy, and that McNabb will also. McNabb, Westbrook, Johnson, Johnson, and Slaton are a pretty good core I guess. My chief concern is that I draft 7th, and now the league might switch to consecutive drafting instead of serpentine. I will have an immediate need for WR, followed by TE….and the depth of those positions seems thin.

Hmm you got a dilemma

If you can’t get Fitz then I don’t know if anybody else is worth going after. Moss maybe..but that will depend on Brady, so there is a bit of a risk there.

So let me try and get this straight. You keep 5 players from your team. Then you draft the rookies. Then is free agency just a free for all? Or do you have another draft with all the veterans? Haha sorry I’m asking so many questions, I’ve just never done a keeper league.

No

We keep 5 players from our rosters from last season, then we draft whoever we want. What I meant by consecutive drafting is each of the 8 teams will draft in the same order in every round (just like they do in the NFL) unless there is a trade of draft picks etc. No worries on asking questions….I made the post!

I have a good repoire with.....

3rd, 4th, and 5th place teams…..the others never trade with me. I have not pulled off a trade with the 5th place team since I had Randy Moss. My best bets are trading Marshall to the 3rd or 4th place team for a QB. I might be able to swing a deal for Westbrook to the 5th place team. The 1st place guy is a big rivalry, and the 6th and 7th place teams are his family members (they only like to trade amongst themselves). The 8th place guy is all but a ghost, and would never trade Brady (who would?? I don’t want Eli Manning).
The 3rd place team is my brother, and the 4th and 5th place teams are my 2 best friends. I made blockbuster trades with my brother last year, and one with each of the other 2 guys. Not sure how tight they will be with their guys this year, yet. Anyway, maybe this will bring things into perspective for you guys. Keep in mind, everyone likes to keep their RB’s and QB’s, and if a player is “elite” you can count on the fact that they are a keeper.

Don't Keep McNabb

In a league with only 8 teams it’s not recommended to keep a QB because you can easily pick up a great one in the draft, if not Mcnabb himself. I drafted Warner in the final round last year. There are always quality QB’s available in late rounds, especially in an 8 man draft. You could probably get a guy like Aaron Rodgers in the middle rounds, and his point production will probably be around the same as McNabb’s. There are too many good QB’s out there so it’s kind of pointless to keep one. If I were you I would definitely keep Westbrook, Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson, and Witten. Don’t bother making trades because you already have 5 great keepers. 3 top 10 RB’s, a top WR and a top TE. Unless you can pull of a trade for Peterson or Fitzgerald, it’s not worth it. Try offering that guy Westbrook, Slaton and Marshall for Perterson. (he has no good keepers besides Peterson and should definitely take that trade) Then you should keep Peterson, Chris Johnson, Pierre Thomas, Andre Johnson and Witten.

Rodgers could end up being a keeper

And in my league, guys tend to keep QB’s, even keeping 2 if they are good, which makes it hard to get a top tier QB in the draft. Normally I would definitely agree with you, and believe me I have taken that route in the past. The problem with dropping McNabb is that someone will draft him in the top 6 picks if I do. In this league, either you keep your best QB, or you shoot from the hip, especially if you are drafting low. I have played the QB merry-go-round since Rich Gannon retired, and I finally have McNabb. It would be hard for me to drop him now.

I would love to have Peterson, but the owner of AP is an old guy who usually will not take any trade offer. I tried like hell to get Peterson last year and he would not budge. He just waits for me to drop players and then he scoops them up. That seems to be the trend in the league as well. I just read yesterday that Gonzo will play more of a blocking role in Atlanta, than previously in KC. The article also said that he will still remain a top 10 TE…..aside from that, why Witten over Gonzo if I were to keep a TE? I think Witten will garner more attention this year without TO….as teams will realize that he is their primary target. Roy can be covered 1 on 1 and they have no other real receiving threats.

I appreciate the feedback and will take your ideas into consideration. Thanks.

Too funny that you would start posting here

And see this…..

Oh well…..I calculated that risk when I made the post.

And while you have a nice set of keepers.....

It is yet to be seen if Tom Brady will bounce back to his old form, if Peyton’s knee will hold up, if Westbrook will come back, or if the Rams will be able to open some holes for SJ. LOL!

Why do I hear the Tecmo Bowl injury music??

My current keeper possibilities

QB Aaron Rodgers
WR Andre Johnson
WR Brandon Marshall or Dwayne Bowe
RB Chris Johnson
RB Steve Slaton

Yes, I also traded Pierre Thomas for Dwayne Bowe…..not sure if I will keep him yet or not.
