Landon Cohen is "Super Human"
Here we go guys....practices are going on and people are making news. It is time to start gearing up for FOOTBALL!!! I happen to use Twitter, and I am currently following multiple Lion's players and different blogs and news feeds there. I ran across a very interesting article that I would like to share with all of you. I want you to read the article, vote in the attached poll, and then post your comments please. I find this very interesting, and I hope it means good things for our D-line this season.

Landon is one strong fella
I’m hoping that Schwartz’s mantra of getting bigger and stronger will help whip this D-Line into shape, so to speak. I voted for Fluellen since I think he has just a bit more overall talent than Cohen, but if I remember rightly, Cohen is a 7th round pick and has done fairly well to amke it this far, maybe he’s got the detemination to make an impact, especially with the strength he has.

exactly what we needed to hear...
Cohen is 6’3 300 lbs. And he in only 23( as of Monday 8/3). Obviously Cohen wants to make an impact in training camp. Now, we need Fluellen and Hill to make a splash at camp. And we could have our future interior D-Line.
WTF
I am highly agitated that Hill failed his physical. I mean seriously, WTF. Dude your in the NFL now. Straighten up and fly right or if i managed the team I’d cut you. What a load of crap and lack of drive coming out of him. If he is going to pull this crap this early cut him and bring someone in that wants to play in the NFL!!!!!!!!
he faild b/c he did not know he needed to run it 2 times so he went balls to the wall his 1st time and was to tird to go back… l8er he passed
Yeah I saw that too.
Don’t remember where exactly, but I know I read it. He said he just needed to pace himself. I’m really not that worried about it anyway. I know the knock on these guys is that often can’t stay on the field for three straight plays, but if you have any depth at this position I’ll take great effort and ability on two plays over three straight mediocre plays. It’s more disturbing that a WR didn’t pass the physical…?!
Yea, assuming they were doing the standard 225lbs
50 reps is pretty amazing haha

Wow then!
Strength is important, but awareness is the most important for a DT i think.

I'm not impressed...
…until I see him jumping on a box from a sitting position. Now THAT’S what you need out of your DT! Seriously though…it means nothing unless that strength translates to the field.
50 reps
is honestly crazy nutz, thats not simple at all most nfl linemen do 26 to 36 reps of 225 he did 50 truly a great feat there

insane...
the most i’d heard of before was larry allen i believe doing aobut 46 or so… i wonder if he just stopped at 50 since it was a nice round number or how much fuel was really left in the tank at that point. crazy strength…i hope he has a burst to match…could get some serious disruption from him this year
NFL Combine Bench Press Record
The record for bench press at the NFL combine is 51 reps of 225lbs, set by Justin Ernest, (DT), of Eastern Kentucky in 1999.

Center of page, second column.
Not to be a jerk...
…but is Justin Ernest even playing football these days? Just pointing out that, while this is an incredibly impressive number, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything on the football field.
I disagree
I would agree with you, but I want to make it clear that upper body strength can make the difference between a good DT and a great DT. If Cohen has any talent (it is likely that Justin Ernest was just a strong guy with no talent), his strength will translate to the field. He has gained almost 20 pounds AND he is that strong? I think it makes a big difference.
True enough...
…if upper body strength means anything on the field it probably means the most on both sides of the line. This is good to hear, but it’s the equivalent of the reason Oakland picked that track star ahead of Crabtree (in my opinion).
Crabs is gonna be great, but HWB
Was and will be the 2nd best WR in the draft. I don’t agree with taking him over Crabtree, but he is very very good. Ive seen him in person and he was really the only option on MD for the past couple years. He faces double teams most of the time, which is why his numbers were lower than expected. The man can play, is all I am saying.

Could just be a workout warrior
Remember Tony Mandarich? Dude was a beast, but couldn’t play football for the life of him.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Possible successor to Grady Jackson?
A guy with Cohen’ strength could take on the role of sucking in blockers, freeing up guys like Fluellen.

I don't know--Jackson is 345-lbs, Cohen is 274
The blocker-eating guys are usually at the heavy end of the spectrum. Cohen’s still pretty undersized by DT standards.
I thought Cohen is 302
I know it isn’t Jackson-size but that still sizeable, plus, his apparent strength, if able to be transferref to the field should attract blockers.

He's still listed as 274 on the Lions site, but
I guess Schwartz was having everybody add weight. Hopefully adding 28 pounds doesn’t hinder his performance—that’s a lot to put on.
I read an article on the Lions site about Cohen
He quoted his weight as 302. We’ll have to see about how much that mass affects his performance, I don’t think it will be too bad.

I think he will be fine
He did 44 reps last year during the preseason…..so now he is a little bigger and a little stronger. The progression seems normal to me.
He's quite athletic as well

Yea, I have seen Pett listed at 236 and 260+ depending on the website..
So you never know….Barkely was always listed at 6’5’’…dudes like 6’1-6’2 at the most

50 reps is not human...
it appears we’re putting together a team of mutants here…
where’s Dr. Xavier?

One more option on the poll.
I would have preferred to vote for “any of the above”. I think this is probably the biggest wild card position on the field. Considering the complete lack of established personnel at DT, I honestly think just about anyone can make the starting lineup. The more I read about Jackson, I’m not even totally convinced he’s locked up his spot.
The point of the poll
Was to get your opinion on which of those guys has the best chance of breaking into the starting lineup. If you could only choose 1, which would you think?
I agree with mushy.
I had a hard time picking one, although I did…But they all have equal chances at this point. I would have preferred selecting “all of the above”, or “i don’t know” Maybe rephrase the question to “who has the greatest upside”

No.....that would defeat the purpose of the poll!!
The purpose is to see which guy you think is the best of the ones listed….not to be neutral or indifferent. I understand that they all have an equal chance, but the question is “Which young Lion’s defensive tackle has the best chance of breaking into the starting lineup this season?” (in your opinion). The question is not who has the most upside. The question I wanted to answer was based on 1) Here are the DTs, not including Jackson and Darby, and 2) Which single player of those listed has the best chance of starting in your opinion.
I purposefully made it so you could not select all of the above. I wanted decisiveness, not ambiguity.
ok…that’s why i chose Sammy Hill.

Agreed
