DeVries out for season

The Detroit Lions' worst fears were confirmed as veteran defensive end Jared DeVries suffered a season-ending injury to Achilles's tendon today at practice. DeVries was expected to be the starting left defensive end when the regular season opened.

Damn.  As if the Lions didn't have enough to worry about on the Defensive line.  This is a huge blow... and It'll be a shame if DeVries isn't able to play again.... not many can after an achilles tear.

Good Luck Jared!

So now.....

White will move to the left side and Avril will be the full time starter at right DE….I sure hope he steps up big.

For our weak D line to lose a good player. That plain sucks. It’ll give Avril more playing time I’m sure, but it really screws up the depth.

What depth?

This just goes to show that this team is still scary thin at critical positions.

depth is depth, good or bad, but now it’s even worse.

Guys

It’s not like Devries was a pro-bowler, I mean I liked him for years now but in that little brother kind of way. All he has ever been is a part-time fill in. He’s been with us for how long and with all those coaches we’ve had he has still yet to be named the starter. All we lost is a breather linemen and assuming that the new DT can play for anything we actually upgraded by losing.

Of course....

It did make room for Hill, Cohen and Fluellen jobs to be secure. Lets hope these young bucks can turn it on.

Yea. Carter. Did you see that dude Shaun Smith from Cleveland we are looking at..

Is listed as like 330lbs but plays DE? What is that all about…I saw him listed as a DT on one site, but ESPN says he played DE. That is a big dude to be on the outside..

He played DE

in a 3-4 system. Which is a lot different than a DE in a 4-3 system which the lions run. In a 3-4 you basically rely on tweeners and OLB’s to blitz and act as the pass rushers so you actually want the DE’s in that system to be around 300-320 lbs. to help push the OL back and take up blockers for the OLB’s to get to the QB. In the 4-3 you want the DE’s to be like 240-280 lbs. and quick because they are the ones that rush the edge. In the Lions system he will end up being a DT.

Bad news

I hope DeVries is quick to recover.

Last I heard it was an achilles tear or somethin, doesn’t sound promising.

no not promising at all

sounds like he’s done for this year for sure, and at his age I wouldn’t think we shall not see him again in a uniform. Too bad he was always likeable as a lion.
