Shaun says Shaun want's back in
If you haven't heard yet, we've signed Shaun Smith, the ex-Brown as of three days ago, yesterday to a one yr, one million dollar deal. While that's a good signing in my book (as we just lost Devries for the season with a blown achilles), the real story, imho, came in Smith's first interview after his first practice.
Smith proclaimed (apparently he was known just as much for his big mouth as his big play on the field)...
"That's my best friend and he wishes he could come back here now. He misses it,'' Smith said after the Lions' morning workout. "You've been somewhere your whole career and you have some good times and you see the talent they're bringing in - (Larry) Foote, (Julian) Peterson and (Phillip) Buchanon - the defense is better now. They've got some quality veterans who can play and there are some young guys with potential".
Here's a link for the full story. Just copy and paste
http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2009/08/shaun_smith_former_lions_dt_sh.html,
Personally, I never wanted to get rid of the guy in the first place. I know may Lions fan did but I'm sure most would welcome Shaun back w/ open arms. You can't argue his ability, just his motivation. If you're argument for not wanting Rogers is based on the 1-7 collapse a couple yrs ago, I would argue that he is the main reason (him and a ton of luck) for the 6-2 start.
If you argue that he was a cancer then, I would rebuttal that if you were in his position (all that talent but being stuck on the Lions w/ Merrynelly and Joe Barry and Jim Colletto as your HC, DC, and OL coach respectively) you would be upset too and, when that overflows and you express your frustration to the media, they blow it out of per-portion and label you a cancer. Remember, Shaun did not chose to come to Detroit, nor did he chose to go to Cleveland. If I had my choice (and was as gifted as shaun), I would NOT chose to play for Manginia and I certainly would not to choose to play for merrynelly. My guess (because I obviously don't know Shaun personally) is that the guy just want's to win and has never been to the playoffs and has only been close once.
If you argue that he is to fat and lazy, unless you are of the same body type and play in the NFL, then I would say you don't know your elbow from your ahole when it comes to that. Neither do I so it will be a short conversation.
Basically, to me it comes down to that fact that this team would be head and shoulders better than they are today if we traded for Shaun Rogers. I truely believe we could contend for the playoffs.
That said, I don't think it will happen.

4th rounder at best
but the browns would never do that so there’s no reason disscusing it.

I don't think the Lions could afford what the Browns would want in return.
As CLF and msivits said above. DTs are in short supply around the league. The Panthers in particular are desperate for a big DT. They could justify a short term acquisition like this more than Detroit could.
Too bad we let him go, he was/is an excellent DT.

Boden was coming off a pro-bowl year too...
We didn;t know that he would suck in zone coverage…(I have a feeling he is going to kill in NE’s man scheme)

i said that when NE signed him
Everyone flamed me, I predict he’ll make the pro bowl. Especially with NE’s front 7.

I agree
We had an exceptional talent at CB and flopped because we couldn’t fit the scheme to him. NE got a gem.

I would welcome Big Baby with open arms!
I still miss him, and I have to hear from my wife’s family talk about how dominate he is. They hail from cleveland. Will never forget his TD against denver

As much as I would like to see him back it's not happening
Cleveland would want a lot in return and it sounds like he is enjoying himself just fine. Found this article and its a decent little read about him.

nothing to trade?
we have tons to trade! I think Mayhew has proven he’s the man and he knows how to make trades happen. That wasn’t even the point though.
I know that this has about a .000001% chance it’ll happen but, what would you be willing to give for Shaun back? I’m not saying give up the farm, but the browns have to have a few holes as do most every team. I’d be willing to give up a bunch of players on our squad for Rogers. There are only a handful, most certainly less than ten, that I wouldn’t trade. Plus, I think a second would be easily justifiable. I’m sure they would ask for a lot, and that’s fine. But this is just a what if…something to contemplate while we wait for the season to start.
I would trade Foote or peterson straight up in a second
How about this, would you give up two of any of these players and a third?
Harris, Orien
Fitzsimmons, Casey
Ramirez, Manny
Spencer, Cody
Darby, Chartric (Chuck)
Dizon, Jordon
Stanton, Drew
Cason, Aveion
Bullocks, Daniel
Salaam, Ephraim
Jansen, Jon
Heller, Will
Colbert, Keary
Northcutt, Dennis
King, Eric
Fluellen, Andre
Cohen, Landon

Wow man
First of all, you don’t fix a problem by trading away a fixed problem. Our LB core was pathetic last year, and now we have acquired Foote and Peterson to fix that problem. I would not even consider trading either one of them without getting a starter at their position in return. Getting Rogers back would be great, but not at the expense of having the same problem at LB as before. Shaun Rogers already proved that he can not be a 3 down DT in Detroit. At best he is a younger and more talented Grady Jackson. IF he came back and we were able to spell him out on 3rd downs, then I would say hell yeah. He is a great run stopper and he draws a double team consistently.
That said, theoretically I would be willing to ship a 3rd rounder and two guys like Will Heller and Chuck Darby to Cleveland for Rogers. Other players on your list that I consider expendable in such a package would include Orien Harris, Cody Spencer, Aveion Cason, and Ephraim Salaam. If such a trade required a 3rd round pick, I would say Rogers is worth a 3rd rounder and ONE of the other guys like Stanton (I seriously doubt the Browns want or need another QB), Fitzsimmons, Ramirez, Dizon, Bullocks, Jansen, Colbert, Northcutt (that would be hilarious), King, Fluellen, or Cohen. However, I really do not think that Fluellen, Cohen, King, Northcutt, Colbert, Jansen, Ramirez, and Fitzsimmons are even remotely expendable at this point, as they are key players to the depth of our team in key areas. Stanton, Dizon, and Bullocks may be expendable, but Cleveland doesn’t need another QB, an undersized LB, or an injury prone safety.
I am not too sure that packaging Heller, Darby, Harris, Spencer, Cason, or Salaam with a 3rd rounder would draw any more interest than a 3rd rounder alone. However, IF Cleveland were to show interest in 2 of those players and our 3rd round pick in return for Shaun Rogers (maybe we could swap 3rd rounders) then I would be all for it.

Scotty?
first off love the name, not only cause it’s mine but now I can say :BEEM Me UP some of that kool-aid.I also loved big baby, but like Patton once said I don’t like to pay for real estate more than once. Big baby didn’t play at his true potential through an entire quarter once in his career. He was only great when he wanted to be and that wasn’t all that much. Why would we want him back, we have better young up and comers that have true power than part-time boy.

I think we could package
Cason and Colbert for a trade.
Don’t you think they will jump at the chance to trade a probowler they just resigned to a 5 year deal for two free agents who couldn’t get into camp with anyone but the Lions?

imagine the Shaun Wall
Instead of the Williams Wall, but our would be much younger. But I knowit won’t happen, never wanted them to trade him in the first place. Thanks Millen!

We would have to trade for Shaun. He's signed through 2013
“Rogers and the Browns agreed to a six-year, $42 million deal on Wednesday, a restructuring that will keep him in Cleveland until 2013. With his existing contract scheduled to expire in 2010, three years and a guaranteed $20 million were added to make the deal work”

No thanks
I wasn’t thrilled about trading him in the first place. He is a very talented DT and yes he would make the Lions defense much better and formidable. The price to trade for him would be too high. I wouldn’t give up anything higher than a 5th rd draft pick.
Having said that, dude was making millions, took 1/2 a season off and became a cancer in the lockerroom. I don’t care if he didn’t like the coaches, play the friggin’ game. I don’t agree with your rebuttal to the lockerroom cancer arguement at all. He was under contract to perform, instead he quit on his teammates, this franchise, and a fanbase who only asks that you work hard. Thats about as unprofessional as it gets.
Word out of Cleveland is he is out of shape AGAIN. He knows when training camp starts and can’t find it in himself to be in shape for training camp after the Browns gave him a PHAT extension. He’s just a fat and lazy slob (and yes, I do know my elbow from my asshole) who is finding out greener pastures usually stink worse because they’re over a septic tank.
So in a nutshell, no I wouldn’t want him back. Time to move on and forward.

Jazzy
I really liked your rebuttal. I would say that your comment “I wouldn’t give up anything higher than a 5th rd draft pick” is disillusion at best. Their is no team in the NFL that wouldn’t give up a 4th, I doubt their would be any not willing to give up a third, most would give up a 2nd and a lot would give up a first and some even more.
I do agree that he was/is paid a ton. But he did play the games. My point is that neither I nor anyone else here knows how much he was actually put into his performances on Sundays. Who’s to say he didn’t try his best and who’s to say he gave up on his teammates. I’ve never heard a teammate say that.
I don’t know Shaun Rogers but, in a nutshell, I would LOVE it if he were a Lions again.

The price would be too high for me
While I don’t mind Scotty G’s idea of 2 players and a third, I don’t know if the Browns would buy it. If he were to come back, I’d be pretty happy, hell, maybe Schwartz can motivate, he got Haynesworth motivated.

I agree
I do not really see the Browns biting on a offer that we could reasonably give them. Big Baby and I share birthdays, and he turned 30 on the day that I turned 33. If he is lucky he will play the remaining 4 seasons on his newly restructured contract. I would not say that, at this point, he would be worth anything higher than a 3rd round pick. How many 35 year old defensive tackles in the league are still playing at a pro bowl level? If he has 2 more pro bowl seasons in the next 4 years, would he even be worth a 3rd round pick? I disagree that anyone would give up a 1st or second rounder for him, and if they did I would think they are nuts. Giving up a 3rd rounder and anything more than special teams players almost seems ludicrous in my opinion as well. Everyone knows the guy is not a very hard worker, talented yes, but dedicated? I honestly think he could help us in a reduced role for a few more years, and I would be happy to have him in that capacity, but anything more than that is really stretching reality.

Did swartz motivate?
or was it he new he was in a contract year last year and he knew he would get paid in full if he preformed last year.Haynesworth for whatever its worth is a better than good DT, but he really only has been the sh*t a few times and he allways got paid afterwards.

technically Fat Albert
Dominated the last 2 years. It wasn’t just last year, so I like to think Schwartz had some hand in his production. Especially since he was a malcontent prior to his success. Hell the Dallas police wanted to issue felony assault charges on him for his actions in a game at tennessee! LoL
But he is no worth nowhere near what washington paid him. Nobody is really. But when eli is making more than peyton you know salaries are messed up.

I agree 100%
But doesn’t dallas police have a right to arrest most of the cowbows? It seems like every year or two a couple of them get into serious trouble. But then Jerry Jones throws some magic fairy dust (money to the policemans ball) and everybody forgets about it.

I say move on..
He was a under achiever. And do we really want that knid of a looker room presence. Especially, with the younger DL players. He is a soft player. Has all the tools to be a All-Pro year in and year out. He just does not want it. The Lions need to change the mentality of is players. We need tough. Ugly sons-of bitches. That just want to hit the crap out of somebody. Every down. Every play.

Preach on Bishop
But if he did come back for the sake of the arguement, add him to he mix with the other shaun and Jackson, that would be scary thinking that they would get big breathers and we wouldn’t lose much when any of them were on the sideline. But we need a end now not another tackle. Any talk about Carter lately?
