Let's start this season out right...

Over on Bless you Boys, the SB NATION Tigers site they did a "Introduce yourself" post at the beginning of the season. Turned out to be one of the most commented, and funnest post so far. Let's do the same thing here. I know some of us know each other already, but as someone who has followed this site for a while I feel this is a good opportunity to increase the commenting by inviting "everyone" who follows the Lions here to say "Hello".

I'll start, Hello my name is Jeremy, or J16941. 16941 is my PDGA (Professional Disc Golf  Association) membership number, so yeah I'm an avid Disc Golfer. I was born in GR, grew up in TC, and have been a Lions fan from the womb. I live about an hour north of San Diego now, in Temecula (So Cal wine country). I'm 29 and work as a Bartender for The YardHouse, (130 beers on tap :-)) I've been in Cali for 8 yrs now but try to make it home for the Thanksgiving Game every year. It's a good time to see the fam and catch a game. Gotta finish by saying I LOVE this site, and thanks Sean for all the hard work you put in. Look forward to meeting you all and enjoying another season of Detroit Lions Football! "RESTORE THE ROAR!!!"

Introduction

Well, let’s see. I’m Hyperion Ecta, and I pride myself on the fact that I’m POD’s resident Australian Lions fan. I currently live on the Gold Coast, which is around 900km north of Sydney. I am a sport’s nut, as many Australian’s are, and devote nearly all my passion to following the teams I love. I’m still a newbie to the Lions since I’ve only been following them for about 6 years now, but in that short period of time, my love for the Lions and the NFL as a sport has grown to astronomical levels. I’ve been here on POD for over a year now, and probably spend most of my computer time reading posts, commenting and generally enjoying talking Lions with fellow Detroit fans, something that I cannot do here at home.

Before I get to mine...

I’m just curious. Typical Lions fans have roots in the area and love their home team. In short, we didn’t have a choice. But if you’re a resident Australian, does that mean you chose the Lions as your NFL team over all the others? Oh yea, any chance you could send some bad ass ruggers up to play in the League?

I’m Eric. I grew up bouncing around the Detroit suburban area (Bloomfield, Birmingham, Troy, Rochester) and went to the University of Michigan, graduating with a degree in psychology. I live just south of Austin, TX now with my girlfriend and our two dogs.
Every Sunday I have to go find a bar with the NFL Ticket during football season and never cease to get snickers from the Cowboys fans when I ask to put a TV with the Lions game on. They ask me why I don’t just become a Cowboys fan now that I’m down here, and I reply “because I hate the fucking Cowboys and I’ll never give up on my home team.”

by TX Lion on Aug 13, 2009 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I chose the Lions

And no, I don’t regret it one bit. My choosing of the Lions was more off a whim than anything, I just picked their logo off of NFL.com, and I haven’t looked back since.

I’d love to see some NRL players in the NFL, although they’d only be able to play in certain positions, like RB, WR, LB & DB. I think they would be succesful though, since they’d easily be able to handle the fitness though since Rugby League players play 80 minutes off both offence and defence.

Good choice!

Thanks for answering, and I’m glad you chose to be a real fan instead of jumping on the Patriots bandwagon or something.
I played some rugby in college, so I know you need the conditioning of a soccer player with the physicality of a football player. I’m a little surprised that some NRL players haven’t made the jump, but they really are two completely different sports. It’s just my opinion, but having played both, I think rugby actually might be more fun to play, but not as fun to watch.

by TX Lion on Aug 13, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Rugby is faster

So it might be a bit more exciting, but I love the strategy involved in American Football. I love watching them both.

Since everyone was a bit more in depth with their background I thought I'd flesh mine out a touch.

My actual name is Shane, Hyperion Ecta has no real meaning, apart from the Titan Hyperion, which is a reference to my love of history. I was born in Campbelltown, which is in south west Sydney and moved to the Gold Coast when I was about 8. I am currently in my final year of a Degree in Journalism at Griffith University and plan to get into the Sport management field when I graduate.

My interests, apart from Sport, are Music (metal fan here), reading, TV, movies and gaming. Pretty basic stuff really. I’ve been a member of POD for nearly a year now and believe this site to be the best place on the net, well done Sean.

What kind of Metal?

Any Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu or Bullet for my valentine? I know they’re a little bit crossover metal but still metal.

by Lions Rant Artist on Aug 14, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

My metal tastes lie more in the Thrash, Groove & Melodic Death Metal areas

So think Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Lamb Of God, Devildriver, Pantera, In Flames, Shadows Fall, Machine Head etc..

I don’t listen to any of the bands you listed there, I do listen to Killswitch Engage, which I suppose is pretty close.

King Diamond; Slayer; Metallica; SOD; WASP; MOD; O god I’m going to regret the rest of these:Quiet Riot; Motley Crew; Tesla; Faster Pussy cat;Saboth; Dio;Iron Maiden;dokken (don’t bash holy diver) oh god the list could go on for a while.

Holy Diver is Dio

And Ronnie James Dio was the shiznit…..I like most of the bands you listed Davis.

Heyyyy brother REV

I wanted too keep going but I had to put the little ons down for bed. Imissed one of my favorites as a youth, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOURLIFE? i WANNA ROCK ROCK! How can we forget Twisted Sister, or David lee roth Van Halen, not Sammy van halen hou they got too main stream. And Def Leopard(before the arm was lost ofcourse). If it wasn’t for bands like them and Pink Floyd, Hell even stix(Mr. Robato). Sub-lime, I mean there was a ton of 80’s hair bands, Cinderella comes to mind also. Man I missed you, only cause I’m such a poor shot though. . .lol.

I've always like Bing Crosby

That more has to do with tradition though, as my family watches Holiday Inn every christmas.

Honestly

There are not many 80’s big hair bands that I do not like…..I even like Extreme, Winger, Tesla, Great White, Warrant, Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Slaughter, Whitesnake, Firehouse, Europe, Queensryche, White Lion, Lita Ford, and of course GnR. Those and all of the others that you listed are many of my favorite bands….I am definitely an 80’s music fan!

by KDawg on Aug 22, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I've seen...

everyone you mentioned above in concert except Extreme, Queensryche and Lita Ford. I would have loved to see each of those as well. Best of that bunch… hands down… Tesla. One of the best sounding live bands ever.

by DrewsLions on Aug 22, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

See, now you guys are getting too old for me...lol

Queensryche is the only band out of that list that I listen to. I have a few bands from the 80’s on my iPod, but they pretty much consist of thrash bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus, Kreator, Testament, Slayer etc…I’m not much of a glam metal fan.

Shinedown ROCKED last night at the fair

Excellent show. And free to boot. The place (Old Cardinal Stadium in Louisville) was packed. Standing room only. I hadn’t heard a lot of their music before last night but they sounded great.

look at what we started REV

I gotta agree if it was 80’s hair band. I listened too it, except for Sammy Van Halen, Just couldn’t truly like it. It was too forced down our throughts on the radio for me to like it. My all time favorite band is Alice-N-Chains, But huge love for older Metalica, in all reality black album and earlier, especially earlier . . . .4 horsemen. . . .whiplash. . . . .Man they were not the same after Cliff Burton died(sigh). Newstead was good and all but he was no Burton. Slayer holds alot of good/bad memories as well.I should of put Sublime on there but we were talking about metal bands and all.For anyone who doesn’t know Sublime you should.

Sorry

only been following for 6 years? how can you be a fan? lol. I wouldn’t have thought it was possible for somebody to have watched the lions over the last 6 seasons and become a fan. But i do appreciate any fan, just find it weird how you could like them from that. I have lasting Barry memories, not sure i could have kept a fan without that… but to each his own.
Nevertheless, a lions fan is a lions fan. Not the easiest thing to be for sure.
Now to my re-intro,
My name is John and I’m a writer a local newspaper in Standish, MI. I’ve bounced around all over Michigan (grand rapids, prescott, standish, mount pleasant, Hopkins, saginaw, wyoming [city]) I’ve been a fan my whole 24-year life. I die a little more inside each season since Barry retired. However I watch every game and can’t help but drink the Kool-aid every off-season. I visit this site about 4 or 5 times a day. And look forward to this season although I’ve made a commitment to not predict a record for 2009 until they win a game. I was just so hurt last year after I predicted 11-5 and we went oh-fer.

I suppose it is strange

Considering that I’ve only seen the Lions win once live on TV (TB in 07), since I have to spend most of my time on the computer listening to the radio and watching NFL.com live tracker.

I think that once I picked them, I couldn’t change, it’s not in my nature as a sport’s fan. The Lions are my team and I cannot fathom following another team, I bleed Blue and Silver now (to go along with the Black, orange and White of my Wests Tigers).

My name is Mike. I am 31 and I am married with a little girl. I have been a lions fan since forever as I grew up in Flint MI and my daughter will be groomed to take up the Lions flag when I can no longer stand and cheer and cuss out the TV when something goes wrong. I joined the Army in 1997 and have bounced around quite a bit since living in VA then Korea on to NC and now TX. I have always been and always will be a Lions fan and get quite a few arguements and discussions with my fellow soldiers about them. I am Currently in Iraq and I pray I catch some Lions games on AFN becuase sometimes they show NFL network.

I'm Sean, and I'm a Lionaholic

Oh, wait, wrong idea.

The gist: I’m about to start my sophomore year at the University of Michigan. And as you can probably tell, I’m a Lions fan. I also run a Michigan blog and am a huge U-M sports fan. Saturdays are spent with college football, and Sundays are for the NFL. Later in the year, college basketball and hockey are thrown into the mix. Oh, and I study every once in a while, too.

I'm a later convert to Lionism than some of you

I moved to Grand Rapids from out-of-state to go to college earlier this decade. I had never watched much football before then, but I started casually watching the Lions about that time, and then I was following them more and more intensely each season.

You could say I came on board during the Mariucci-Harrington era and have been a devout fan ever since. Yeah, it’s a head-scratcher for me too how that worked out…

Personal: my name’s Ethan, I’m 26, married, two kittens, and work as a software developer.

I feel like I'm having my identity stolen, but here goes...

POD Superhero Codename: Drewslions
Real Name: Andrew… yeah, it’s really not Drew

I’m a 34 year old Finance Analyst working for a large company here in mid-Michigan. I grew up in the Upper Penninsula and moved to Midland in 2000. Recently widowed with two kids… son, 4 and daughter, 2. Being a single father with a career is not proving to be very easy, so the Lions allow me a daily “get-a-way” from the struggle of the everyday grind.

Been a Lion’s fan since I can remember… pre-Sanders era. Each year the obsession grows and it’s now at almost uncontrollable levels. Thankfully, I have my buddies here at POD to help vent a little of that pent up angst and enjoy many a good debate. I love most sports, but football is heads and shoulders above every other in my book.

by DrewsLions on Aug 13, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions

GD it Drew......

Now you got me all teary eyed thinking of you as a widow and a single father…..I am so sorry to hear about your loss man. Seriously. I have been hard on you, since you seem like the kind of guy who can take it. I hope I have not caused you any more stress than you must already deal with. I have enjoyed our debates, for the most part, and you probably don’t want my pity….but nonetheless I feel for you man.

My name is Kale Stevens (Codename: KDawg, a combo of Kale and the Mesick Bulldogs….I once had “Hawgs” shaved into the hair on the back of my head, being an offensive lineman. KDawg evolved from all of that). I am 33. I recently graduated from college with a Bachelors degree in Accounting. I am a married father of 2 girls, one 3 year old biological daughter and one 9 year old step daughter. I am unemployed (my wife supports us on a CNA’s wages), and currently a stay at home Dad looking for work. I currently live in Ionia, MI but I was born in Lakeview, MI and grew up in Mesick, MI (30 miles south of Traverse City and 18 west of Cadillac). I have been a Lion’s fan all of my life. My fandom was passed down to me by my father, who’s fandom was passed down to him by his father. It is a family tradition, so to speak. No matter where I go, or what I do, I will always bleed Honolulu Blue….:o)

I’ve seen it all when it comes to the Lions (at least everything since around 1980 when I can remember)…..from Gary Danielson, to Eric Hipple, Chuck Long, Rusty Hilger, Bob Gagliano, Rodney Peete, Dave Kreig, Scott Mitchell, Joey Harrington, Jon Kitna, Dan Orlavsky, Daunte Culpepper and now Matt Stafford vs Daunte Culpepper. I remember Billy Sims, James Jones, Garry James, Barry Sanders, Greg Hill, James Stewart, Shawn Bryson, Kevin Jones, and now Kevin Smith clear as day. I also remember Freddie Scott, Leonard Thompson, Jeff Chadwick, Pete Mandley, Richard Johnson, Willie Green, Robert Clark, Bret Periman, Herman Moore, Johnny Morton, Germane Crowell, Bill Schroeder, Az Hakim, Roy Williams, Shaun McDonald, Mike Furrey, Calvin Johnson, Eddie Murray, Jason Hanson, and many many others. I have watched the Lions be close to Super Bowl contenders twice in my life. I have seen what it takes to get there. I have a clear mindset on what it is going to take now.

I am excited for the Lions now. I think Matt Stafford is the real deal, even if I do want to see him eased into the mix. I think we need better offensive linemen, better defensive linemen, and a better secondary before we can contend. While I question the direction that the FO has chosen to take in building what is necessary I do not feel that they have done all bad. I wish I could be the Lion’s GM. It would be a dream come true to own them, and a dream come true to make the decisions of who they sign and do not sign. That is unlikely to ever happen, but I would welcome the opportunity should it arise.

As you all know, I am opinionated and adamant. That is my nature. I am a straightforward and honest man, who tells it like he sees it. If I offend you, I apologize. If you don’t like me or what I say, then skip my comments unless you want to argue….:o) I am not afraid to mix it up, mentally and otherwise. I am not perfect, and I know I have been wrong (recently and in the past). I will fight tooth and nail to prove my point, until it becomes abundantly clear, beyond a reasonable doubt, that I am wrong. At that time, I will be the first to admit that I was wrong. Until then, I will stick to my guns. Opinions are not an argument. However, they can cause arguments. An opinion is a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. When I am completely certain, I typically back my assertions with links to the facts. When I am arguing opinion, I just speak my mind because there will never be a clear right or wrong. That’s me in a nutshell. God bless all Lion’s fans and GO LIONS!!

by KDawg on Aug 13, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't lose any sleep over...

being hard on me. Most times I ask for it and wouldn’t egg people on if I didn’t want to mix it up a little. I just look for a good, cerebral debate with someone that can hold their own. That’s probably why I tag you so frequently. Take that as a compliment from me… for what it’s worth.

Yeah… I lost my wife this past March after a two year battle with cancer. We were married for seven wonderful years. It’s been tougher than words could express, but we’re learning to find our way. I never look for sympathy… just understanding.

by DrewsLions on Aug 13, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you for the compliment

And I will take it as such. I know how I would feel if I lost my wife….losing a child is the only thing I can imagine that could be worse. I would probably lose it if my wife died, and knowing how I would feel I commend you for the strength that you seemingly portray without effort. It takes a real man to keep going in the face of the ultimate adversity, which in my opinion is the inner battles that we all face each and everyday. The fact that you have been dealt a real blow emotionally, yet you keep on going for the love of your children (and hopefully life) speaks volumes about your character my friend (at least to me). You are a real man Drew. A hero to your children. You have my utmost respect for simply doing what you have to do. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your children.

I can not understand what it is like to lose my life partner, but I do understand how it feels to lose someone who you love, that is very close to you. I am 33 years old now, and it was 15 years ago in December when my Grandmother died in my arms. I worked for 45 minutes trying to save her life, but I heard her last breath as it escaped her body. It was one of the most traumatic and difficult things I have ever encountered in my life, and to this very day I can not forget it. The memory is always there, but I remember her for who she was….my mother, my teacher, my friend. I also remember how proud she was of me and how much she wanted me to succeed in life. Her memory is a source of strength for me, and I have overcome a great many obstacles (both physically and mentally) because that is what she wanted. I have lost other family in my life, but none affected me so profoundly as my grandmother’s untimely death. I move on by remembering that death is as natural as life. It is a cycle. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed (unless you are God), and so I think our loved ones energies (their souls) are still alive somewhere.

To anyone out there (including Drew)…..if you ever need someone to talk to, if you feel alone and need a friend, if you are hurt, depressed, or otherwise, I am willing to talk to you, hear your story, share my experiences, and be a friend. I don’t care who you are, where you grew up, or what your issue may be….life is a gift. It can be taken away as quickly as it was given. No matter how bad it seems, there is always a reason to keep living. I believe faith is the ultimate test of life. Faith in yourself, the common man, life in general, and even God (if you believe) is the ultimate test. A man or woman who can keep going in the face of adversity, no matter how difficult, is a person who will live a gifted life. That which does not kill us can only make us stronger….and in the words of Tupac Shakur (a very intelligent man, take it or leave it as you will) “Let me live baby, Let me live!”

I grew up in Fraser. Coming of age watching Barry Sanders every week was something I will treasure til the day I die. He made it very easy to be a football fan in Detroit for any 10 year old just learning the game. I moved out here to Iowa (where my dad grew up) because his job disappeared. I ended up going to the University of Iowa and I truly think if it wasnt for the internet I would have been forced to move back to the Detroit area just to follow my teams. But I have blogs like this one (thanks Sean) which make it as easy as it can possibly be to follow the Lions so I feel right at home now.
I work for an advertising/marketing company out here called Channel Fusion. I just bought a house in Cedar Rapids, IA earlier this year and will be getting married here in about a month. We have a dog and 4 cats … it gets a little crazy from time to time but at least it isnt boring.
Oh … and I started a new endevor of brewing my own beer. I am set up to brew a beer throughout the football season and I am still working on a name for it. I would like it to be Lion’s themed but I am having trouble with a decent name. Any suggestions from you guys would be appriciated.

Anthony (Twon82)

Great post, by the way. It’s been fun reading everyone’s backgrounds and seeing who all is out there.

I am Anthony, and I get my POD moniker from what some of my closer friends call me. A shortened version of Antoine. 82 is my birth year, as you may have guessed. I actually have never lived in Michigan; I grew up in western Kentucky my whole life, just south of the Indiana border next to Evansville. My father and his immediate family lived in Livonia and Adrian, which is where I get my Detroit loyalty from. My father raised me right…D-town all the way. I grew up loving to watch and rooting for Barry Sanders, Isiah Thomas, Joe D, Bill Laimbeer, Yzerman, Federov, Cecil Fielder, Alan Trammell, Chris Spielman, Herman Moore, etc. I love watching the current teams just as much.

I just graduated with my Master’s Degree in History…looking to teach eventually at the college level or go on and get other degrees to pursue something else that interests me. I am currently working a tech job while I pursue that ultimate goal. I have a wife who is attending veterinary school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign…she’s going into her third year. We have a dog and we love to travel to new places whenever possible.

How a Utica, NY'er becomes a Detroit Lions fan

First of all – great idea Jeremy!! I too enjoy reading everyone’s bios. I grew up in Utica, NY and have a strange story to tell on how I became a Lions fan (everyone, and I mean everyone is a Bills fan where I’m from).

I once went to a Lions training camp with my father (who is in the military) on our way up to Canada. We were driving and decided to spend the day in Detroit as a father and son day. Since this was in the summer and my father is a huge football fan he wanted me to get exposed to football at an early age. He decided to take me to a free Lions practice near where we were staying. I was 4 years old and met some of the players and fell in love instantly with the team. That was in 1977. To this day I remain the most rabid Lions fan in these parts (NYC). Along those lines, if anyone knows of any Lions fans in the NYC area please let me know – it would be very, very cool to hook up at some bar in the East Village and watch a game with another fan (not too many of us here).

Looking forward to a great year from our team!!

Hi! My name is Roustam.

Friends call me Roustic or simply Rou. I am perhaps the newbiest of all the newbie Lions fans. I`ve already posted here explaining my reasons for getting behind the Detroit Lions, but I`ll repeat, briefly this time, – I want this team to get up on its feet, fight back and kick some asses. Joined POD just last February and apparently I`m the only Russian fan on this site. I live in Bugulma, a little town about 1200 clicks west of Moscow. I work as an interpreter in geophysical company here. I have a pregnant wife (due in December), cat, and a bunch of aquarium fish.
I really doubt I`ll see much Lions games here, if any, but … God, thank you for the internet.

Couldn't he

Find a TV channel over the net and streamline the feed into his comp?

That`s an option

But I`ve never streamed anything from the net. I guess it will take something faster than 400K ADSL. Speed is not a big problem though since I can speed it up for extra money. But then again, do you know any such channel?

i don’t know if you can but I would bet that you could Hook up and TClion has a station up in traverse city (channel 9and10) they broadcast every game, it’s a fox channel and he might be able to tell you exactly what TV station it is. From there I would think it should be a snap for you to start streamlining the games over in Russia.I would of used a detroit channel but you might get some blacked out games that you probably wouldn’t get to see.

Reppin' the D in North Cackalack...

Like many thus far, I grew up watching Barry throughout the 90’s under the guidance of my old man. My first vivid football memory is watching the NFC championship game against the Redskin’s and eating so much Little Ceasar’s pizza it was ridiculous. I loved watching so many great players through the years that donned the Honolulu Blue. Outside of Barry, I will never forget Schlesinger, Spielman, Blades, Mel Gray, Herman Moore and so many others. Another treasured memory, when I was in the third grade (I was 9) I met Luther Eliss, Herman Moore, Mark Carrier, Tony Semple, and Jason Hanson at a golf outing. I’m 26 now and they say Hanson’s leg is stronger than ever. It makes me want some of whatever that man is drinking. That, or maybe he is immortal. Only time will tell. I really think this is the year of destiny for the Lions. Admittedly I say that every year, but this years just reeks special. Scwartz will lead us to the promise land as our modern moses with Stafford slinging ropes all over the Norris division. 9-7 and divsion winners is my prediction. I need to change my underwear from just thinking about it.
I grew up in Spring Lake (West Michigan – inbetween GR and the Lake). I graduated from Western Michigan U. and can’t wait to purchase my Delmas jersey to support my fellow Bronco. After school I headed south in search of employment. I currently live in Charlotte, NC which is a huge transplant city. The bars on sunday’s are full of many different fans from many teams so trash talking is aplenty. Due to the diversity it’s hard to find a bar that will show a Lions game but don’t worry, I’ve got spot. If there are anyother Lions fans out there in Charlotte and they would like to get a watch party going, let me know. Fun Fact – Jake Delhomme is the quintessential pitch man down here. His face is on everything from cable TV to fried chicken joints, no lie!
Great site Sean! Keep up the great work! My only request is post even more , I can’t get enough.

Born & Raised in Illini country, but a Diehard Lions fan!!

Great idea for a post guys – I know you’ll all think I’m crazy, but I was born and raised down here in Champaign, IL (Illini country), graduated from the Univ of Illinois, and have been working at the Univ of IL for 8+ years. I love my Illini, but I think I love my Lions just as much if not more – I love the NFL game, and the Lions are my team. I got hooked on Barry and the ‘91 team back when I was a kid – I loved the logo/uniforms, and my dad wasn’t into football, so I ended up picking the Lions as my team. I still remember being in the hospital w/ my grandpa watching the Redskins-Lions NFC championship game that year. I guess you can say I hopped on the ‘91 bandwagon and have never looked back since. I love the logo, uniforms, Thanksgiving tradition, Barry, Herman Moore, Spielman, and all the players from the 90’s – I got hooked. I have a closet full of Lions clothes and catch a lot of heat from people down here – they think I’m crazy – but I’m a diehard Lions fan and always will be.

I’m heading up for the home opener this year against the Vikings in week 2, looking forward to taking a tour of Detroit and learning more about the town. If anyone has any suggestions on cool places to visit, let me know. I went to the Lions-Bears game a couple years ago when we scored 34 points in the 4th quarter, and it was a blast – can’t wait to get back to Ford Field. I hit the Ford museum during that trip, just curious if there are any other cool spots I should hit on my 4-day vacation up to Detroit

Anyways, that’s my story – just know that you have some Lions love down here in Illinois!!

Well here it goes

my name is Adam and as you can probably tell by the POD moniker that I live in Toledo, OH I was born and raised here. I’m 24 years old and currently in school for Mechanical Engineering. I have been a Lions fan since I was 5 and my parents bought me a little Detroit Lions uniform with the pants, jersey, helmet, and all. I used to run around in that thing when I was younger pretending to be Barry Sanders and thats how I became a Lions fan. Unlike most of you nobody in my family are Lions fans they are all Browns and Steelers fans (there is a ton of Steelers fans here in Ohio). So I chose to like the Lions all on my own as a youngster. When I was younger my Grandpa used to take me to Lions games every year at the Silverdome and those are some of the greatest memories I have. I have and always will no matter what be a die hard Lions fan. I can’t be anything else. Professional sports wise I root for all the Detroit teams but I don’t have the passion for the others as I do for the Lions.

As for my favorite college team I am an Iowa Hawkeyes fan and am a member of their SBN blog Black Heart Gold Pants. I expect to catch some hell from the Michigan and Ohio State fans on here for that one but I’m game. That’s what being a fan is all about. I really enjoy this site and think Sean does a great job on here with the updates and the entire blog in general. This is the place I come for all my Lions news and information because he brings the news from all over the web and compiles it here on one site and I really like that just for the fact I don’t have to surf the web for hours to get the same news and updates I get here on one site. I’m excited for this year and hope they can pull it together and be competitive.

At least we’re all in the Big Ten :) Anyways, this is a Lions site, who cares about our college affiliations – we’re all brothers on the same team when it comes to the NFL. Good to see there’s some other out-of-state Lions fans out there like myself

I have to start off saying I love this site. YOu gys keep me more up to date than the damn NFL.
My name is Robert Wilcox, currently enlisted in the Navy for 7 years and counting. I have been a Lions fan since I was 4 years old. I met Sanders and when he went to the Lions I became a Lions Fan. No, not a bandwagon fan. The first time I experienced football was meeting Barry. I live in San Diego and absolutely give every Chargers fan a ration of shit. They give it back 100 times over.

I can’t wait for tickets to go on sale. I am coming to Detroit to be around some real Lions Fans for the Pittsburgh game. It is the game I want to go to pretty bad. Either that or a Vikings game. I hate those drag queens.

I was born in a Class V hurricane...

Umm, make that a huge blizzard in Dearborn Heights. My mother was almost stuck on the road on the way to the hospital. I spent many years in and around Detroit (Livonia, Redford, Garden City, Clarkston). I’m a Sagittarius and I like long walks on the beach.

I went to high school in Tampa back when the Bucs were in the NFC North. This allowed me to watch games with more frequency than I should have been able to living 1000 miles away from the Silverdome. I then spent too long in school bouncing around from Florida State (go Noles) to North Carolina. I ended up in Atlanta for a jobby job and it is here that I spend my days getting snarky with other Lions fans on message boards. I mean well, I love you all.

I have a brother who still lives in the Detroit area (about 1/2 mile from the Silverdome) and I have occasionally drug him to games. It has gotten harder since they moved downtown.

My name is Matt and I’m from New Mexico. I am currently a Guidance Counselor for a middle school. We don’t have a professional team of any sort in NM, so most people are either Cowboy fans or Bronco fans. The main reason I became a lions fan is because as a kid growing up, cable television wasn’t a privlege we got to enjoy. But on every Thanksgiving they would show the Lions game. My brother always rooted for the other team and I stuck to the lions. Needless to say, I am now 31 and that started about 22 years ago. Just wanted to say that I love this site. I check it about 5 times a day. Good luck and can’t wait for a great year!!!!!!!!!!!

Northern Va Lions Fan!

ID: Fuzzdog20 (High School Nickname)

So I’m one of the few that was not born and raised in MI, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the Roots. My Father is from Detroit and my mother from Saginaw. Used to visit my Grand parents place on Lake Mi in the UP during late summer early fall. I got to watch the Lions with my Grandpa 4 to 5 times a year. Been a Lions fan since I knew what football is, so I’m happy to wear the gear in Skins Country.

Real Name: Jon
Age: 27

I work in Fairfax Va at Patriot Harley-Davidson as the IT manager and CFO assistant. Small business so I get to wear multiple hats. I am married ( 4 years) to a lovely wife who is a Lawyer in DC and have 2 cats. I am active person from playing in sports league to riding a Harley when I get a chance. I do enjoy watching most sports, but my main teams are Lions, Miami Hurricanes, and Washington Nationals.

I am willing to pretty much talk about any team or any sport.

On a side note I’m starting an On-line Franchise in Madden 10 on the Xbox 360. If anyone is interested and can make a comment send me an email at Fuzzdog20@yahoo.com.

What's up

My name is Matt, I am 28 and have been a lions fan every since I was old enough to watch tv. I am from Port Austin, a little town about 3 hours north of Detroit. I am in the Air Force, have been for six years. I currently live in Tacoma, WA. I love every sports team that comes out of Michigan, I am a die hard sports fan so that means that the wife hates this time of the year. Can’t wait for Nov 8 when the lions play the seachickens. I am so glad to have this site or I would go crazy with all the fair weather fans out here. You could not find a seahawk fan before they went to the Superbowl, same with all the rest of the sports out here, it really sucks. I constantly get into heated debates about how Barry is the greatest running back of all time. I am pretty pumped about this year, I don’t normally get this way because I always felt like we just did not have the players to get it done, never had a good offensive or defensive line and I believe that is what it takes to win games. We still don’t but I feel like we are finally headed in the right direction, finally.

Lions fan from Chicago

My name is Bosco and I was born and raised in Chicago, i became a Lions fan in 1989 playing pee wee football at Portage Park here in Chicago. This was my first time playing and i was excited, the pee wee team i played for was the Lions. We had the real jerseys and even the Lions logo was on our helmet. The first day i got my jersey (# 66) i was so excited that i wore it for days on end, it just so happened that the Bears were off that Sunday and the team that was playing that day was the Lions, i saw my jersey and i was hooked from then on. Im also a Bears fan but i would never root against the Lions. I just became a Lions season ticket holder this year and it is a dream come true.

My name is Brad and I’m 33. I have a wife and two chocolate labs named Nestle and Dove. Kdawg and I grew up together in Mesick, and although I left and joined the Air Force for four of the most unforgettable years of my life, I simply couldn’t get northern Michigan out of my blood.

When I’m not slavering over all things Lions, I work for Halliburton in the oil field, probably the most rewarding and enriching job I’ve ever had. I also am an avid rockhound, mushroom hunter, brewer, euchre player, and globetrotter.

Kdawg posted alot of my memories already, so there’s no need to duplicate it, but I remember watching my first game (Lions versus Packers) on a snowy black and white tv with the rabbit ears.

It was great reading a little about all of you, and I only hope that we get to know each other better in the years to come, and hopefully I’ll get to meet some of you at some point or another.

Thank you.

My parents were killed in a car accident. Move to Detroit to live with my Grandparents. My Grandfather was a huge Lions fan. I was schooled every Sunday about the Lions. He had volumes of books about the Lions. I attended MSU. Graduated with a B.A. in french. Now I live in San Francisco. Hi, My name is Rick and I am NorthLeft

I have thrown out bits and pieces of my background over the last few months but here it is in a nutshell;
Resident of Corunna, Ontario [just across the St. Clair River] and a Lions fan since about 1969 or so. I am 51, married to a wonderful woman for twenty-six years, with two grown daughters. I am a Chemical Engineer, and have worked in the chemical industry for almost thirty years now. I enjoy reading history, science, nature, and science fiction; just retired from soccer but still avidly follow it, keep an eye on the Tigers and Maple Leafs and Pistons, enjoy camping, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, [am going on a trip to Algonquin Park next week to try a three day canoe trip], biking, and living with a nine month old Chocolate Lab, Gus.
I was born in Windsor, Ontario which is how I became a fan of most Detroit sports teams. I scoff at the Canadians in my area who switched to the Blue Jays when Toronto finally got a team. Who needs fans like that?
I love discussing issues about current events, sports, you name it. My personal motto is “I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it.”
I love this site and make it one of my first [of many] stops on my internet tour.

I'm Jake

I grew up in Iowa, born in 81, so when i was a kid Barry was destroying the Bucs every week it seemed. I was hooked, especially when you throw in the throwback jersey’s. Love that look.

Other than Barry I was also hooked when I opened my first pack of football cards and got an Andre Ware rookie card, along with a spielman card. Still have them both along with numerous barry cards.

Nickname is from a high school buddy and it stuck, can’t fight a nickname. I now live South of Atlanta working as a reverse engineer. Just got married a month ago yesterday.

I am also a Hawkeye, Cubs and Blues fan. I have a knack for picking winners. Well if you count wrestling national titles (which I do).

I don’t post often, as I am a little wrapped up in the cubs at the moment, but they are fading fast…so maybe I will get more involved.

Sean this site is turning into a great thing, well done. Especially allowing one of your best posters to get frontpage access, I wish some of the other SBN sites would take your lead.

Its a funny story actually.

Whats up all, my name is Kevin, 28, living in Gilbert, AZ now for the past 8 years. Lived my first 20 in GR and although I miss all the Detroit sports nuts in MI, I love it down here (I also subscribe to MLB, NFL, and MLB to get my Detroit sports fix). I just had a little girl name Mia and she is 2 months old and has a drawer full or Tigers, Lions, and Pistons outfits (will always be expanding that selection for her). I work in Environmental Insurance and really am fortunate to like what I do.

Love all Detroit sports teams plus when you get out of the state you start to root for MSU and U of M and of course WMU (Go Delmas). My buddies call me the white devil because I seem to bring bad luck to anything that I really like. A good example is that I have gotten 6 jerseys in my lifetime; 2 Joey H’s, 2 R. Williams, and yes 2 Darko’s!!!! Lets just say that I really want a Stafford and Delmas jersey but I don’t want them to end up like Joey or Darko so I will hold off.

I'm a little late to the party

First off my name is Dominic, screenname detpistons3, sometimes shortened to either dp3 or det. I’m 16 years old, I’m chaldean (similar to arabic to those that don’t know) entering my junior year at Sterling Heights High School. I’m on the football and wrestling team and I’m pretty damn smart :) I’ve lived in Sterling Heights almost all my life. I grew up without a father (deceased), and I never had anyone that pushed me to love Detroit sports (or sports in general). Nevertheless, I’ve been following the Lions religiously for about 4 years now, and I’ve been watching the games for as long as I can remember. The rollercoaster has been a bumpy one, but I’ve never wavered as a Detroit fan.

I’m a basketball fan first, as was my dad, even though he never pushed me to it. The Detroit Pistons are my team and I frequent the Pistons’s SBN blog MotownStringMusic, daily. Football is a close second for me though, and I’m a sucker for underdogs, so the Lions are a perfect fit. My second team is the New Orleans Saints (ever since they drafted Reggie Bush, before they were good).

I’m a pretty outgoing and funny person, I love sports and videogames. I play Madden, NBA 2k series, Halo 3, and GTA IV the most. I primarily listen to Hip Hop/R&B music, I love a good book, a good movie, and a good sports game (on TV or playing it). I like working out, playing football and basketball, and chilling with friends.

Im a little late to but whatever

im vincent, im 17 years old and im a senior at U of D Jesuit. im chaldean like this other kid. Im a die hard lions fans which is really tough to be in the era in which i have grown up. When people c me watching every lions game and see me on this web site they laugh and make fun of me. But guess what i dont give a F*** cause i love the lions more than anything. I am also a die hard Michigan fan, IN ROD WE TRUST JUST, and no thats not maranelli, its rich rodriguez. I play football, hockey, and i wrestle. also even though i shoot like a 48 i sometimes call myself a golfer. Hockey is my favorite sport to play but football is my favorite to watch. Last year was a really bad football year for me. My own team won 1 game cause we had the worst coach in the world, Michigan didnt make a bowl game for the first time in forever, and we already no how the lions did. However, this year will be different behind our new coach my high school team will thrive, behind the arm of tate forcier Michigan will beat all rivals, and most of all behind shwartz and the arm of PEPPER the lions will be winners.

I am Mike from New Boston,MI. I am a huge sports nut even have a tattoo of the red wing emblem on my shoulder and under it my initials and the number 91 (yes for Fedorov start the jokes here….) got it in 93 when he was here and in his prime. And a banner for every champ they have won since I have been alive. Hence the tag wingnut91. I have loved all the Detroit sports since I was a kid. Found POD on yahoo sports and have been lurking here ever since.

I even have a drink named after me. The D-Bomb. Irish car bomb. But with Bud and a shot of Wild Turkey 101. It takes a special knid of person to drink one of those.

Im currently a senior at Wayne State and probably just going straight into graduate school instead of trying to find a job in this economy. My two passions in life are politics and sports. Im a Michigan and Notre Dame fan, though I pick ND when they play, this will all change if I go to UM for graduate school. I grew up a Lions fan and had season tickets up until this season when I couldn’t justify shelling out the money.

Awwww

It’s nice to put names to accounts (if not names to faces). I think I posted this stuff during last year’s POD fantasy league, but many people are new.

Hi, my name is Seth, and I’m one of the very very few Lion fans to have never lived in or around Michigan (although i’m not the only one here like that). I grew up in LA and never got hooked on the rams or raiders (they left when I was 11 anyways, and I couldn’t care less). My Dad grew up in Detroit and his whole family still lives there, so we would go back every thanksgiving and we would all go to the games. For some reason, my fondness for the team has only grown even after they lost any shred of respectability (I guess I don’t want to be called a hypocrite for being super thrilled once they start winning).

I went from LA to North Carolina to New York and now I’m in Texas (as of two days ago). If nothing else, I’m finally getting a taste for legit college football. Should be fun! I’ve spent the last few years working at a hospital doing psychiatric research, and now I’m off getting a Ph.D. in psychology/neuroscience, so if nothing else I’ll be a good resource should any of you guys need counseling.

Stand and cheer the brave!

I'm Jeff and have been a Lions fan as long as I can remember

I got the name Jettero2112 by mixing a character from one of my favorite book series and an album from one of my favorite bands. I lived in Holland, MI for the majority of my life and currently reside in Louisville, KY about 15 minutes from Churchill Downs. Bonus for me as I’m a huge horse racing fan. I"m married (nice Dutch girl from Holland) and have two daughters (22, she’s a cop and 12, dances ballet, jazz and tap since she was 2), one son (9, 1st degree black belt in karate and Cub Scout) and one granddaughter (8 months). I spent a lot of time as a kid bouncing from state to state as my Dad got transferred around a lot. We always ended back in Michigan, though. I’m a Purdue and S Illinois (Carbondale) grad majoring in Engineering and Architecture and, sorry Sean, I hate U of M, MI State, Ohio State and especially Notre Dame. My first recollections of the Lions were Thanksgiving games with Greg Landry, Mel Farr, Charlie Sanders and Lem Barney. I’m a die hard fan and am waiting patiently for a great season. I’m also a big fan of the Pistons and Red Wings (used to have season tickets) and the Chicago Cubs (thanks, Gramps). I was a baseball fan before I became a football fan and rooting for the Cubs has help me rooting for the Lions. I have my own blog, such as it is, called Motown Madmen. It’s nothing spectacular but I try to update frequently with news and occasionally with a story of my own. I’m also an avid golfer (11.5 hdcp) and can play year around down here. It’s addicting and drives my wife nuts. I’ve been on POD since, I think either the end of 06 or beginning of 07. Excellent place to hang out and meet new people and discuss our beloved (most of the time) Lions.

Hello

My name is Nick and I’ve been a member of POD for probably close to a year now. If you don’t recognize the name, it’s probably because I do a lot more reading than commenting. Anyways, I am 18 and live in Marysville, MI, where I attend St. Clair County Community College. In January, I am transferring to Central Michigan University to pursue a degree in Sports Management. Ever since I was about nine, sports have been pretty much the only thing I cared about. Basketball is my favorite sport, but football is a close second. I split my time rooting between the hometown Lions and my other favorite, the Buccaneers, because of their gritty defense. Hopefully, once the summer ends, and football season starts, I will commenting on this site more than ever.

Hello

My name is Ed. I grew up in Southfield (suburb of Detroit). I used to hate the Lions because they were always so bad. I used to laugh at people who rooted for them because they were obviously such narrow-minded losers. Couldn’t they see this team would always find a way to tank it?

I never turned down a chance to go see them though. I remember when the Lions first moved to Pontiac. Actually I remember arguing with classmates (UD Jesuit Academy and High School on 7 mile) when the Lions were just talking about moving to what would be called the Silverdome. I remember seeing Monte Clark coach. I remember players complaining that Clark’s practices were too hard, not realistic. That’s about as far back as I go.

My attitude changed when I moved to Alabama. The first fall I found myself checking on the Lions scores and realized “OMG, I am a fan! I actually care about these jokers.” So I recognized my denial, accepted my love of the Lions, and never looked back. Well, when they talked about changing the logo this year I did have a moment of pause.

I have a lot of fond memories of the Lions. Billy Sims, Eric Hipple, Barry (of course), Lem Barney, the Chuck Long experiment, were all very fun to follow.

Personal: Married, one daughter, graduated Central Michigan, live in Springfield OH, work in the computer field, usually read and comment during work breaks (ahem, including slow phone meetings).

Oh, and my nickname comes from my days at UD Jesuit. They called me ‘birdseed’ because I used to make that owl sound by blowing into my cupped hands. One day on the bus driver had heard enough and yelled “Hey! Birdseed! Pipe down!” The name stuck. I dropped the nickname after I left that school though.

Hey, fellas, they call me Joe...

I post here as MyPride, and everywhere else as Ready2Roar. I am a 45 years young, disabled caucasion male; often sedated/medicated/inebriated (n’ kinda jaded), but 110% faithful to my team – which has been, since the age of tenortwelve, the D-troit Lions. I grew up in South Bend, IN, in the shadow of the golden dome, during the Era of Ara, and so became a hopeless, helpless football fanatic (I also love my Irish)…I ALWAYS have believed that “this is definitely THE year”, no matter what my intellect tells me (faith is belief without, or despite, any evidence or factual information) because I know that “NO ONE CAN LOSE FOREVER – IT”S A STATISTICAL IMPOSSIBILITY (even if one were to try)". I may be quoted as saying “GET READY TO ROAR TILL YOUR THROATS ARE SORE!” The time of the Lions has finally come.

POD Wisconsin contingent checking in

My name’s Partha, I’m 34, and I work for a software company in the vicinity of Madison, Wisconsin. Grew up in Ypsilanti, and didn’t get too far away for the first 28 years, going to school at Michigan, and then Wayne State. Lived in Detroit for a year and change, sadly before Ford Field opened, because I would have loved to have walked to a Lions game, the way I used to walk to Tiger Stadium. Anyway, I came out here for grad school 6 years ago, and while that didn’t work out as intended, it’s a great place, Packers obsession aside.

I’ve been on POD since September 2006, apparently, so I’m one of the old timers on the site, though I’ve never commented really heavily. That said, I’ve watched this site grow from where game thread were just me and a couple of guys, with Sean delivering the play by play for those of us unable to see the game (I live closer to all three of the other NFC North teams than I do to Detroit, so it’s a rare Lions game that makes it on TV here). In fact, there were multiple game threads last year that resembled that very situation just last year.

So it was with a bit of awe, and a glad heart that I saw the explosion of commenters and the exponential increase in traffic around here through the off season, and into the preseason. I’m really looking forward to interacting with all you guys (and gals?) during the season, and especially in the game threads.

Glad also to see a few prog and metal fans chiming in; my faves, as I’ve posted upthread somewhere, begin with Dream Theater and Rush, and radiate outward from those bands, with a side of fusion jazz, I’ve got an Al DiMeola CD jamming right now. Definitely going to have to post this elsewhere, but I heard an interview with Jim Schwarz on ESPN radio this evening in which he confessed to a love of Iron Maiden, my third favorite band, and other 80s metal, as well as country, which he picked up from 10 years in Nashville.

The Detroit fandom was totally an accident of birth and geography, but I wouldn’t trade it. As far as the Lions go, as I put it in my sbnation bio/blurb thingy, I’ve been chained to the bandwagon that has no wheels for darn near 30 years now, and recall all too well the pain of seeing Eddie Murray miss a potential game winning FG in a playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers after the 1983 season. Billy Sims was, along with Larry Herndon, one of my first sports heroes, and I cried when his career ended. I was 9 at the time. Little did I know that 1984 season would be the first of many that started with hopes and end in unmitigated disaster, with the loss of a potential hall of famer, a team that had made it to the playoffs two years in a row suddenly plummeting to just a handful of wins, not to make it to the playoffs until another guy wearing the #20 rejuvenated the franchise.

But, dammit, I’m still here, still on this bandwagon, and I’ll be here until I die. If this team ever wins it all, it will be more than worth all the pain.

Last but not least?

Wazz up POD nation. My name is Scotty you can figure out my last name I hope. I have been a proud fan of our lions since I could walk, thanks dad. But I was born in Bay City(damn that makes me a polak) and grew up here in th saginaw valley, Go lumber Jacks. Like Det32 I could careless about my pagraphs and spelling as long asyou can all read my crazy rants thats all that matters. As you can see I like to get my jabs in,and I will always try to make you guys laugh and after my beloved RED WINGS, our LIONS are my favorite team period. I am a divorsed man who is a tax deduction from from 1972, That is what my dad called me for 18 years of my life since my B-Day is new years eve.(funny thing about me is with that B-day you would think I was a drinker) I have 2 almost grown children living in Houghton lake, and I miss them a ton every day. After I got divorced I jumped around the state opening Home Depot’s in that town and Midland and West Branch, until I got fired for getting caught Smoking with my Night crew, I was going through deep depression at that time, TY ex-wife. But now I’m back in my home town of Saginw and met the mother of my littlest 2 which happen to be 2 years old and 5 months old, scary to me is that my oldest; son; is driving already. DAMN! But in terms of our lions like I said I have followed them since I was off the nipple. I can go back a far as monty clark and Billy Simms and use to love it when we had LIONS in the valley at SVSU, met many lions and actually got to golf with a few of them up in Houghtontucky when they do their annual golf outting just before camp opens up. In terms of my rants guys only take them half to heart since I am definitely on the blue kool-aid, I never had to fight a fight in my life; other than with my older bro that is; cause as you guys can tell I am just to layed back to give a shit what anyone thinks of me. NO really. Who are you too judge me. That’s one of my motto’s, the other is life goes on. I am a huge sports fan of all of our michigan teams/ except state ofcourse. . .Sorry sparties we all know you have to fall on one side of the fence or the other in the great divide. I have only been posting on here since the draft this year, I was sooooo pissed that we took Stafford I couldn’t hold it in anymore. That’s why I keep making the eating crow comments he’s already won me over.I can sill remember watching a little guy in a red wings jersey as a rookie dancing all over the ice and since me and my now dead Grandfather would watch every game that was on TV 50 wkbd out of detroit back then, I fell in love with the true captain Stevie Y. But my passion for our lions is a damn close second. I have become friends with almost everyone of you guys and yes you are all like family to me already, a few here I feel closer too than others;you know who you are, but like the biggets from back in the day we are just 1 big ol happy family here and I appreciate it daily guys. THANK YOU SEAN!

Stevie Y

Is also my favorite Red Wing player of all time…..I could have reached out and touched him as I was leaving game 2 of the 2006 World Series. I was helping my own grandmother down the stairs when a door opened and the Captain stepped through. I was at a loss for words. All I could say was “Holy shit Grandma! That’s Stevie Y!!”. He looked at me and smiled (he was on the phone), and I did not bother him. My only regret from that day is not getting an autograph or at least shaking his hand.

Holy shit huh? you know it! I can still remember crying like a little baby when he won his first cup. When he lifted it over his head my wife at the time was laughing at me for crying tears of joy for all that he had went throu to get that cup in his hands. That’s how I’m going to feel the day our lions win the Lombardy trophy, Cryng like a little baby and smiling the whole time.
