Quick Thoughts

As I'm sitting here watching the Steelers-Cardinals game, computer in lap of course, a bunch of random thoughts are running through my mind. Thought I'd share....

> Seems like twenty years ago when Charlie Batch was with the Lions. Yet, here he is... staring at me in HD. How old is he... 55? Actually, he's only 35 and still looks good. Guess I was surprised to see that he has a pretty decent TD-INT ratio for his career. Just couldn't stay healthy or be consistent enough for Detroit. What a shame. Always liked him.

> So Ron Mexico signs with the Eagles. I'm sure Donovan McNabb, who is playing right now, is real happy about that. If the media barrage when they drafted Kolb was any indication, the Vick signing will be brutal on him. I always thought that McNabb had a strange way of dealing with the media. Almost a clumsy, awkward, jokiness about it... very weird. Anyway, this should make for a good post-Favre drama in the coming weeks. BTW, Vick will be eligible to play in the final two preseason games before he has to sit for the first six regular season games. Knowing Philly fans, they'll be chanting for Vick after McNabb's first interception. I might take a stroll over the Eagles SBNation site to see how warm the reception for Vick is.

>I think this new Tirico-Jaworski-Gruden team might be one of the best MNF crews in recent history. Tirico is a good play-by-play man... nice even-keeled voice and very consistent. Jaworski, like him or not, is a great analyst. He has a great ability, much like John Madden - but in a different way, to relay complicated scheme information to the casual fan. I've always liked Jaws. I was unsure about Gruden being in the booth. Although it will be short-lived because he'll be back on the field next year, he has really impressed me tonight. He has a strange likeablility for a guy who tries hard not to be likeable. He is fluid and comfortable in his speech and comes off with loads of personality. Very impressed. Should make for a fun MNF season.

> I've almost got to turn the channel every time a Madden '10 commercial comes on. I think I've read every review and seen every video on the net. I've not been this excited about a video game... even a Madden game, in a long time. I actually tried to find the game a few days early and scoured the local "Mom & Pop's" video stores in the area, but no dice. If you read any Madden-based blogs, you would think you were the only one on the planet that has to wait until Aug. 14th. Everyone's got it already. Anyway, I already pre-ordered from Best Buy like a month ago, but just realized my Best Buy doesn't open until 10am tomorrow. Oh well. My daughter has a Dr's appt in the morning (she has pneumonia right now... not fun... 5 straight days of fevers and coughs), so I have to wait anyway. But once I get home, it's Madden lockdown. Probably won't even start a franchise for a few days. I'm a sliders nut... can't stand to play the game unless the results and sims results are perfect. Will spend lots of time tinkering and checking out the new features before really getting serious and jumping into a franchise. It's doubtful that I'll get into the online franchise simply due to time. It probably seems like I have a ton of free time due to the number of comments I make, but that's a mirage. My laptop is always on my counter in front of me at home and a lot of these posts are done at work... yeah whatever... you all do it too! Anyway, if you can't tell, I'm super pumped for the game.

> Can't believe the first Lions game is day after tomorrow. It seems like forever since last year, but it's also a little surreal that it's in two days! I guess talking about it on here everyday really forms a build-up of sorts. Same with the draft. I'm hoping to take some time and watch the game three or four times, then post my impressions on Monday or Tuesday of next week. I'll really key on the two lines and of course, the quarterbacks. Problem is... that will cut into my Madden time, so we'll see.

Not much of a point to this other than to share some quick thoughts about the happenings tonight and this weekend. Happy Madden-Holiday everyone!
