Who is Pat Caputo?

And how in the world is he a lions beat reporter? We looked like a real football team and this guy Caputo's article n the front page mad it sound like we were horrible. Did that guy watch the same game as all of us? Yes 1 rec kept dropping balls that were right in his hands, but he is a 3rd stringer and most likely wont make the team anyways. I didn't see our lions crumble when we got down like last year. The score after the first quarter wasn't double digits, and our D-fence didn't miss every tackle under the sun. Only 1 tackle on a human bowling ball that was taken to the house. The same old lions my ass. We have not blitzed that much in decades and we actually looked better than most of us thought our 2 lines were going to look. The O-line was a hugh surprise to me, they actually looked better than I could of imagined. We ran the ball right until the very end of the game, when have we stuck to the run game in resent years? The DT's actually seemed to be playing in the backfield on quite a few plays, that was VERY pleasant too see. i would like too see Cason and Colbert cut this week but we will see how that plays out, Hard to say if Staff would of thrown that pick 6, if Colbert wouldn't of kept dropping balls put right into his hands. I was very very surprised to see how good Staff looked last night with 3rd string rec's. 2 bad passes 1 int and the other was overthrown but Megatron would of not been overthrown on that particular play. Brown and Ervin both looked better than any rookies I've seen in recent years.I really liked what I saw out of Brown, very fast outta the backfield and was elusive on the rec TD. This guy will make the team 4 sure, he is going to be our version of Darren Sproles or Chris Johnson, the change of pace RB. And If you guys thouht I was on the kool-aid before, watch out now cause i'm punch drunk on lions juice. I said it once and now I'll say it again, we are going to be BIG darkhorse division contenders this year. On a side note did anybody see that crybaby in Chicago had a poor outting in his debut.I still think he was a product of his rec's in denver. Anyways chime in and tell me what you guys thought of yesterdays preseason game.

After the second drop, I thought Staff

was just trying to get Colbert cut by throwing to him. I mean, he knew the guy was going to drop everything thrown his way.

I don’t think we cut Colbert, He has speed, size, and at least knows his routes. I think we found a great nickle back.

Cason sucks ass. I think that 40 yard TD run showed our LBs getting caught in a blocking scheme that they should have sniffed out and our safeties both missing tackles. Though it did show Buchannon has some speed left.

I think culpepper did a good job of managing the game, but was way quick to go to his checkdown. Like he was afraid of throwing an INT or an incompletion. I think Stafford showed no fear sticking the ball into tight spots and he showed he was able to do it on most occasions—except his infamous pick 6. Though I think that was more of a great play by the LB than a bad one by Stafford.

I think—overall—our defense was not as good as it needs to be and our offense was better than I thought it would be.

All The QBs Looked Good.....

….So did K Smith and Brown…..I think that Stafford will be the week 1 starter…..I bet he starts next week so he can be seen against a 1st team defense……then after he puts up better numbers against a 1st team defense he will eventually be bnamed week 1 starter….I liked stanton….I know it was against 2nd teamers but stil looked good.

Pat Caputo

is a self-proclaimed know-it-all northern suburb snob who doesn’t let callers finish a single sentence without interupting them to prove what a condesending prick he is. I can’t stand him on the Ticket. At least Valenti will let you argue your point before he becomes a douche, Caputo will just cut you off and hang up and tell everyone in radioland how disillusioned/stupid the caller was

I know

That after last year I don’t want to get overly geeked up. (to late) But Staff had more accuracy in 1 game than I have seen out of any QB in a lions uniform. Every pass could/should of been caught. He looked damn good moving in the pocket as well, and to look off safeties like he was doing is not a characteristic of a rookie QB. I agree the pick 6 was a good defencive play for the LB but he knew Staff had to get rid of it quick, they brought pressure on that play and I think that he baited Staff into that throw. But guys he did it with 3rd string rec’s. And 3rd string RB, And after seeing our future RB’s I hope we don’t let Ervin or Brown go.And as far as Cason goes he can go marching along. Now what suprised me was how well the DT’s played and how invisible our LB’s were. I think we all thought it wa going to be the other way around. Our secondary really didn’t play that bad either, especially without Delmas flying around. As a Saginastian here did anyone notice in the second half of the game how good Schweigert looked at safety? He was hitting every thing around and seemed to be in the area of every play. He has played for the Raiders prior to this year and I think he could win a starting spot in the backfield on D.

Schweigert looked really good in the 2nd half. I’d like to see more of him with the 1st stringers in upcoming preseason games.

by JazzyBBP on Aug 16, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Schweigert was very good, and probably one of our best on defence, but let’s see how he handles a first team offence, if Schwartz gives him the chance. He can definitely pull off a big hit, but so can Pearson, who didn’t play so well yesterday. It’s all a big mystery right now, and it’s gonna take a few more pre-season games to solve it.

Caputo has always been down on the Lions

I don’t think he knows any other way. I had to stop reading his columns because I felt he was always negative. I don’t need sunshine blown up my back side but he does not need to always be a downer.
I was at the game and I thought they played very well. Ya there is some work to do but Stafford was great and Brown was a nice surprise. Never have been big on Cason and I think Colbert just sent himself packing. It will be nice to see Staff with the first teamers as I thought Culpepper was to quick to check down and run, albeit he is in great shape and is a bit faster. Derick Williams did well also. Hopefully the rest of the rookies will surprise as well once they get off injuries and get on the field.

Agree that on basis of this first exhibition game, progress has been made. Besides Colbert, I thought biggest negative was 9 penalties for 113 yards.

Thoughts on the game-

First though, get off Caputo’s back, he’s a knowledgeable guy and let him have his opinion.

Game- Only watched second half, but was impressed with Stanton and think he could be a fine backup QB in the league, I’m glad they kept him around— maybe the offense co. will use him here and there for sime trick/gimmicky plays during the season. I think that would work if done sparingly.

Schweigert seems to be a nice run defender, have to say he’s a given for a roster spot just in terms of special teams value.

In terms of the last WR position, I think it’s between Fowler and Standeford myself. Fowler is better on special teams, (right?) so he might have the advantage.

But I think that last WR spot is not very important really, because of the rookie TE.

Brown reminds me a bit of Deion Sanders, at least the way he runs. Looking like a heckuva draft choice.

Also,

I hope Carson Butler can beat out Dan G. for that TE spot that is likely to be given to one of them. Didn’t think Butler was that bad in college as a blocker, he’s definitely a good, athletic reciever.

I think they both may make it. Fitzsimmons might be on the way out

by JazzyBBP on Aug 16, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

That is a possibility

Gronkowski has been reliable in training camp and if he plays solidly in the pre-season, we just might see him sneak onto the roster.

Hey wennington

It’s not that everyone has an opinion and like so we all have azz-holes. But after reading his post earlier, it was like watching a Notre Dame football game with Brent Musberger doing the commentating and we are the other team.If you would not of watched the game or listened to it. You would think that we had no chance of winning a game again this year. maybe Caputo should of stayed away from the oozo until after he typed his article. Culpepper def checked down to quick last night, and I personnaly think that Staff looked better than I ever expected he could look esecially with the 3rd string WR’s. Damn if Colbert would of had some sticky hands last night Staff would of had 200 yards on 3 series. And I was also very happy with the results of the other rookies as well, if grew is as good as the reports say he is we are going to be a very dangerous team this year.

by davis0169 on Aug 16, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? Thought Fitz was a reliable special teams player

and a versatile TE/FB contributor, though in terms of potential you’re probably correct, the two rookies have a lot of it.

this might be the first time that we can actually see potential in all of the rookies that played, everyone of them that did play, made atleast 1 real good play I thought.

RE: Pat Caputo

Fat Caputo is an idiot! I honestly cannot believe that he is a paid “journalist”…
The guy even has a radio show on WDFN, and what sport does he talk about?
Tramp Stamps on girls and how he hates them, but likes them too.
Can someone tell me what in the world that had to do with any sport at all?

He was obviously watching Madden 2010 instead of the actual game when he gave his report of the game. He did comment on all the food vendors- maybe he should be a food critic, and not a sports reporter or journalist?!?

Hey Fat, why don’t you go eat a village or a couple of small countries you big, fat, non-educated slob!!!

by grass_cutr on Aug 18, 2009 9:13 AM EDT reply actions

I can’t stand listening to him. He comes on, radio goes off.

Yes, I really meant to type Fat Caputo and not Pat Caputo. I wish I were better and smarter than the rest of the world too!!! Just like Fat.

Pat Caputo

I actually love his writing style. To bad he knows next to nothing about football. Talk about not ready for prime time. He would last in NY for, well; a NY minute.

by NYLIONSFAN on Aug 18, 2009 12:45 PM EDT reply actions

Caputo isn't the only culpret

It seems to me that the other knuckle head beet reporter seems to jump on the lions more than he should also, Kowalski or what ever his name is.It just seems to me that these guys only ever want to talk about the negative, very seldom about the good.It just pisses me off, I understand that we have only barely better than the raiders in the last decade, but damn give our new staff some credit for the very hard work that they are doing sometimes. They came, they saw, they are changing! very fast I would think.
