All the evidence points to Dante starting.
So the Lions use the number one pick in the draft to select a quarterback. The supposed savior of the franchise. The man with the 41.7 million dollar arm. The former Georgia Bulldog has been charged with turning the franchise around after the worst season in NFL history. Only one little problem...Dante is going to start.
The reason I think Dante will start comes from our fearless leader himself. Jim Swartz has said he hasn't decided who will start week one and even if he did, he wouldn't tell us because leaving everyone in the dark gives the Lions a supposed competitive advantage over New Orleans. While that may be true, I think it has more to do w/ the reps in practice. If Starfford was going to start week one, then he would be getting ALL the reps. Dante has been in the league for years. The only reason to continue splitting them evenly is because Dante will start but they still want to get Stafford involved so he can take over at some point.
Why give Dante so many reps if he is just going to be the back up? You have to think that they are going to sit Stafford until the lions are out of playoff contention. It would get us through the year which I believe is the goal. All the comments we have been hearing from Mayhew and company have the same theme...tempered expectations. They know they aren't going to the playoffs. They don't have the talent. But with the additions in this years draft and another whole offseason to build upon what they have in place, I see next year as a huge opportunity.

Scotty...
they are getting even reps in practice (per Killer on MLive). That doesn’t point one way or the other. This Daunte starting thing is all based on assumptions gathered from everyone talking about it so much. Truth be told… NONE of us have any clue as to what Schwartz is going to do. He’s not talking, nor should he be.
If I had to “guess”, I’d say Daunte too. But that’s not based on any inside information. That’s a simple guess. And that guess is based on the fact that he’s the veteran and is still currently number one on the unofficial depth chart. We can all speculate that Schwartz looked at the game film and saw that Culpepper has played pretty well, but we don’t know that. For all you or I or anyone else here knows, he has already chosen Stafford for week 1.
If ANYONE on here can tell me I’m wrong about that, please do. I’d love to hear it.
Your wrong
Now do you love me? lol :-) J/K ofcourse. Byt you saidyou wanted to be told you were wrong. But Like my counter part Scotty I think he is absolutely right about this, IF Staff was going to be thestarter going into week 1, I think he would be getting the “lions” share of the load during camp, it would only make sence. Being that they are still splitting the reps it does look like Dr. Pepper is going to be our man starting the season out. And speaking of Scotty, how do you have the gull to say that we are not going to the playoffs at this point in the preseason? I understand we went 0 fur last year and all that, but I don’t think anyone on our roster has thrown in the white towel just yet. Why do you want to lower expectations already? Did you watch a episode of MAD TV last night and see a “lowered expectations” skit or something? I’m just razzing you ofcourse cause I still think we are a dark horse to do very well this year.
i hope
staff starts we all know we are not going anywhere this year so why not let him learn now if we wait till next year that will set us back at least a year becues he will be learng the on the feald traing then insted of now i would like to think if he starts this year we upgrade the line and cb in next years draft/FA we will have a chance to go some where
the point i am makeing is start him.. why the on the job traning cant hert us
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
Exactly......
……PLus ill say it again…..Stafford has led more TD drives this preseason then Culpepper…..Even if it is 2 0 in that stat…….I believe it speaks volumes…..Go Lions….Go Staff

Same for all of us brother from another mother.
I really couldn’t careless which 1 it is Staff infection or the Culpizzle roll, I just want that particular player to get us some wins, about 16 of them. 13 regular season wins and 3 playoff wins.
Tempered Expectations
Do you think all the talk of tempered expectations and the reiteration at ever chance given by the front office and Schwartz that this team is building and making decisions based on being a winner year in and year out for each year to come and not just this year is to prepare the fans for what they are going to see?
What they are going to see being; a rookie QB, a so so D that doesn’t have the personal to pull off the schemes and playing style the coach has in mind, and overall a team full of growing pains.
I have no idea who is going to start week 1 but if I had to read between the lines, look at all the “evidence”, and going off of how the front office and Jim prepared the fans for the drafting of Staff I would say they are preparing us for his immediate arrival into the starting lineup.
I pray daily that you're right
I shouldn’t assume that we aren’t going to the playoffs. The chance of it may be slim, but it’s still there just as much for the Lions as anyone else. I like to think the Lions and the Pats finished equally last year because they both missed the playoffs;)
Drew I swear I said “I think” at least a half dozen times. I have no smoking gun that’s for sure. But Sanchez is the starter this year and didn’t ATL name Ryan the starter this time a year ago? Flacco doesn’t count because he started due to injury and Freeman doesn’t count because everyone knew he was a project. I think if Matt was going to start he would be getting all the reps. i really could have summed up the fanpost w/ that last sentence, but it’s more fun explaining myself, albeit poorly most of the time.
PS Drew I REALLY
well
the lions have said there not going to name the starter till kick off week one so just b/c they havent named it yet dosent mhen c-pep will win
i think they understand starting staff is are best hope i much rather him go in to next year and be redey insted of tarting next year and seting us back
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
No editing?
anyway, that was supposed to be
PS Drew I REALLY liked your last fanpost. Read it multiple times.
Anyone want to bet
I’ll put a hundred bucks on cpep. I don’t want him to start, but he will. You can all say I was right at a later date.
LOL
You have no idea how many times I have wanted to say that (other than the fact that I DO want DC to start), but did not say it because I thought there might actually be someone here who was crazy enough to take the bet!
You know I wont take that bet
Cause I’m still on the D-train, but it wouldn’t break my heart if Staff got the start either.
No
I will not be heartbroken if Matt Stafford gets the call…..but I will wonder what Daunte could have done.
For some reason I laughed at that...
