I'm kind of pissed that Delmas missed about 3 tackles
and didn’t lay anyone out. Seems the only people he can hammer are our own…
lol

Big play by Colts
Huge yards, another missed tackle

I don't get why they kick a field goal here, in the Preseason
They know they can make a FG from the 10-yard line…wouldn’t it make more sense to run another pass play?
gunther loves levy at this point

I love how teams go for two in the preseason
Wish they did it more in real games. Not like we need more reasons to rip on coaches. But it’d be fun anyway.

Who is the man?
Who leads the QB race now? When is that last time we could say the Lions have not 1, not 2, but 3 good QBs?
never maybe

Well....
Nobody can make the “Culpepper hasn’t led us to any TD drives” argument anymore….and nobody can say that Stafford has controlled the clock better or done more than Culpepper. I still think Daunte is the man, and think he will definitely start the season under center for the Lions, and rightfully so.
If you check the stats
they certainly could say that, based on this one game, anyway. Stafford had twice the completions and twice the yards. Couldn’t really help the one-yard-line issue.
That's your opinion KDawg
I only listened to the game and checked stats on NFL.com, but I have a question for those of you who watched….is Daunte checking down from his primary receivers to throw short or do the plays look designed to be short all the time?
What concerns me about Daunte is that he is not throwing the ball downfield very much. From looking at the first two game drive charts and listening to this game, it almost seems like he is afraid to challenge the DBs. Staff seems to be taking his shots downfield. Yes, he has thrown three INTs, but he is making some plays too.
Can any of you guys comment on that?
Daunte did throw short a lot
I agree that Daunte should take more shots downfield, but he seems to moving the chains, so I can’t complain.

I agree with you as far as controlling the ball and clock
But that is not going to work for long when the season starts.
Stafford's style
is definitely to throw it downfield, sometimes to the detriment of stats & completions. Georgia had the highest percentage of passes caught by WRs in the country last year, I think.
From what I saw
Daunte’s few long attempts were very shaky. Well overthrown balls at least 2 or 3 times, (how do you overthrow Megatron by 5 yards?) and every time he checked down it was to Kevin Smith, who proceeded to then make a play out of it.
I’m reserving judgement for next week, but Stafford looked far more impressive. His arm is amazing, both with power and accuracy. There was a marked difference between Daunte’s play and Staff’s. I guess me and KDawg are resigned to be opposed on this, but I’m seeing something totally different from you man.

Nate, that is what I saw when I watched the delayed game.
Staff looked very composed and made the tough NFL throws that separate the elite from the mediocre QBs.
He still makes mistakes, but with more reps I see him making the fade to Calvin and putting the end of the half INT into a better spot.
If Culpepper had not played so well, I would call the competition over. As it is I think Culpepper still has a slim chance to claim the job.
I give up
You guys keep living in your little perfect dream world. I am done trying to make my point. I am done trying to explain common sense to you. I am going to say what I need to say here, and then I am all done commenting on the subject.
Obviously you guys want glamor over consistency. It makes me sick to come here and read the same crap over and over from you guys (not so much you Nate D). Some people just want to have the opposing viewpoint for the sake of argument, and others are just blinded by the rookie’s contract and what he represents as the #1 draft pick. NFL games are not won by throwing the ball downfield (long passes). It is nice to have the ability (which ALL of our QBs have), but it is not necessary. Games are won in the NFL by winning the time of possession battle, putting points on the board on a high percentage of possessions, and by winning the takeaway/giveaway battle. Bombing the ball downfield all the time turns the game into an offensive shootout. Why? Because the faster we score, the less time our defense has to rest. What happens then? Our defense gets torched (because they are tired) and we lose games late (which we could have won if our defense was fresh and if the opposing teams offense was kept off the field with a little ball control) because of stupid mistakes on offense (trying to make up for a lack of defense).
Some people here are so set in the idea of the pretty boy rookie getting the start right away that they can not see the forest through the trees. You sit and watch these preseason games and you try to come up with ways to justify the kid getting the start immediately. You watch the games (or listen and check the stats) and you could care less about the solid play of our veteran QB that set us up for the victory in the first place. WE HELD THE BALL FOR OVER 12 MINUTES IN THE FIRST QTR!! The Colts offense was nullified and our defense was kept fresh for most of that quarter because Daunte Culpepper effectively and efficiently managed the clock and controlled the ball. Play calling had a role in it as well, but the bottom line is that DC was the man leading the way! After the 1st drive he marched us down the field and scored a TD….he was supposed to play all of the 1st qtr and half of the second, but he was taken out of the game after the 1st qtr (actually after 1 play in the 2nd)…..why do you suggest that happened? I say it is because he already showed everything the coaches wanted to see. He did his job and they wanted to see the rook. Stafford got more chances and played for much longer than Daunte (all of Qtr 2 and almost half of the 3rd), and we only got a FG with him at the helm. We held the ball for 34 minutes in the game….12 of them were because of DC and they came in ONE Qtr (1/3 of our TOP)!!
Try to tell me Stafford did a better job controlling the ball and managing the clock. Say whatever you want. We can agree to disagree or whatever, but I am done. Once the starter is named in week 1, we’ll see who was right and who’s thinking was wishful.
I agree for the most part
I just wanna add some statistics to clear up some stuff.
So, Culpepper had the first 2 drives of the game. Culpepper’s first drive was 11 plays for 51 yards which included 3 first downs and took up 6:36 of the clock. A really good drive which was stuffed by a Gos penalty.
Culpepper’s second drive was a TD drive. He managed 12 plays for 70 yards with 6 first downs that took 5:41 off the clock.
Stafford’s first drive was able to match what Culpepper did, a scoring drive. It was a 14 play, 84 yard drive with 4 first downs, managing to take 7:39 off the clock. Unfortunatelt for us, we had to settle for a FG.
Stafford’s second drive was a two minute drill. He managed 8 plays for 41 yards with 3 first downs which took 1:36 off the clock.
Stafford’s first drive after the half wasn’t a great one. Managing only 1 first down, he only gained 6 yards on 4 plays with only 2:06 off the clock before punting.
However, his final drive was another big one. In what took 5:21 off the clock, Stafford managed to gain 89 yards off 13 plays which included 4 first downs. The crucial thing to point out here is that we couldn’t rush the ball for the score, although, I don’t think you can blame Stafford for that.
Totals:
Culpepper – 23 plays, 121 yards, 9 FD, TOP 12:17, 1 TD
Stafford – 39 plays, 220 yards, 12 FD, TOP 16:47, 1 FG
What does this tells us? Well, it depends what you wanna see. If your a Culpepper fan, you see two successive long drives in one quarter which managed a TD. If your a Stafford fan, you see the large yard number and also two long drives which included the longest drive of the game. Take from this what you will, but I know personally, these stats just remind me of how close this competition is.

KDawg, you are just flat out wrong about the importance of throwing the ball downfield.
Elite QBs stretch the defence in every direction. If you can’t make the throws to the sidelines and deep, the defence will stuff the middle and close down the run and short passing.
As HE shows below, Staff controlled the ball when he got it, and the Lions moved the ball in the air and on the ground. The first drive in the second half that HE says was not great consisted of a dropped pass by Aaron Brown in the flat. That pass hit Brown in stride and was delivered with perfect touch. Brown looked up to check for tacklers and dropped the pass. On third and three, A. Brown went the wrong way on a hand off resulting in Staff being smothered by two Colts. It was a blown running play, not a sack. He lost 13 yards on that play. It would have been nice if Staff had some plays with K Smith, who would not have made those rookie mistakes.
KDawg, that “pretty boy” is our future. I appreciate that you support Daunte, but if you can’t make a case for him based on results and logic don’t resort to name calling. Us Staff supporters think we have some pretty solid reasons for having him start from game one, and not some of the foolish ones that you mentioned.
The problem
Is that you are putting too much emphasis on throwing the ball downfield. When there is an opportunity, any one of our THREE QBs will take shots downfield. In my opinion, Stafford has tried to force a lot more passes downfield than was necessary. Daunte Culpepper has taken shots downfield when he could. When he could not, he made the right reads and threw check down passes to the right people. His play has been consistent, effective, and efficient. I said it before and I will say it again…..games are not won and lost by throwing the ball downfield.
I know its the same argument constantly
But remember before this when it was Aaron Curry vs. Staff?
It’s always something ;)
Anyways, I think you made a good point with Daunte leading a sustained drive. I like consistency over flashy. 2 things bothered me about that though, one being that Daunte wasn’t directing a drive downfield so much as he was checking down to Kevin Smith every play. Yes, if it’s there, take it. But I’ve seen Lion QBs check down to HBs like it was their jobs for a long time and it hasn’t gotten us anywhere.
Also, if that’s what we’re aiming for, wouldn’t Daunte then not be following Linehan’s playbook of a vertical passing attack? Obviously not every pass is going to be a bomb to the sideline, but as I said, even the few deep throws he did attempt were baadly thrown. The aforementioned overthrow to Megatron, and the overthrow over the middle to… I believe it was Fitz. Two guys who are 6’5" and 6’4".
I really think Daunte is going to get the job based on his history with Linehan, but I think there’s no better place for a mature, skilled, young QB to get his start right away. I’d rather him have a shitty year now (which will probably happen regardless of whether he starts or not) and bounce back with a team that’s played a season of football together than him to come out just as bleary eyed, game 1 of next season.
Out of curiosity, what’s the major DRAWBACK to not starting him? Besides the record, which IMO, won’t differ much based on the starter @ QB?
I think the passes to Kevin Smith
were designed screen plays. I do not believe they were ALL check downs. The bottom line is that they worked every time. I agree that you can’t throw screens and dumps on every single play, but we have not had much time to see what would happen over the course of an entire game with any of our QBs at the helm. Daunte will take his shots downfield. I have also said that I no longer care which QB gets the start anymore. If the coaches think that Stafford is the guy, then so be it. It is just my opinion, as a football player and a fan, that Culpepper gives us the best chance to win right now. What would be the drawback of not starting DC? Nothing really….outside of losing games that we could possibly win if he were the starter.
KDawg, I just cleaned up your last statement.

You’re welcome. LOL
Quick Robin....
get me the anti ignorance spray! These villains really think that a rookie QB can come right in and do a better job than a proven veteran who is playing very well…..well we’ll show them who’s boss! BIFF!!!! BAM!!!! CRACK!!!! BANG!!! POW!!!!
Damn it Robin…..use the Bat grappling hook to give this guy an atomic wedgy!! YANK!!! RIP!!! THUD!!!!
Who will win this epic battle? Will Daunte Culpepper start against the Saints even though he just got 8 stitches in his toe? Will the evil Matt Stafford win the day by default? Will Northleft12 ever shut up? Tune in next time to find out!! Same Bat time….same Bat place…..

If I were the coach I would start Stafford at Buffalo
and give him the opening start if he plays well, proving he can do this on the road, and if he is mediocre or worse it’s Culpepper.
