Lions Release Four, Place One on IR to Get Down to 75 Players
The first round of roster cuts is complete, and the Lions have released four players and placed another on the injured reserve. Wide receiver Demir Boldin, defensive end Ryan Kees, linebacker Robert Francois, and safety LaMarcus Hicks were the four who got released and cornerback Dexter Wynn was placed on the IR because of a hand injury he suffered last week.
The roster will be trimmed down to 53 players on Saturday. The Lions will scour the waiver wire to see if there is anyone they want to bring in, and after the roster is finalized, they will establish their practice squad.
I plan on posting a final roster prediction later today, and I'm happy to say that none of the players released were on my initial list of 53 players who will make the team. I will continue to refine it and have it up later this afternoon.

uh...ya, um, I'm gonna hafta gohead & disagree, mmk...
How Colbert made the cut over DJ Boldin is beyond me, cuz he looked better in limited playing time & is a URFA, & that’s just sad if you’re Colbert. What did he have like 20 drops & 2 catches? c’mon guys…
Man that sucks
We could really use a guy like Milloy…..I wonder if he just wants WAY too much money or if the Lions are just being stingy with their free cap space.
Until he signs with another team
there is always the possibility one or both sides budges a little bit.
We can hope…

At the very least
It’s good to see we’re still being aggressive in attempts to improve our team with veteran leadership
No surprises and 1 question
With the first four cuts. I was hoping Colbert or Cason would be there but I knew they wouldn’t.
I’d be surprised if any of the rookies got cut. Does anyone think all of our draft picks will make the ‘09-’10 squad??
Murtha is probably practice squad-bound
Gronkowski on the bubble.

I knew I forgot someone
I figured maybe Gronkowski would be cut but I forgot about Lyndon Murtha – good call Sean!
casey is more proven and there high on him
but injury prone

Casey is pretty good on special teams.........
Maybe keep him as a solid back-up to Pettigrew. Can we keep 3 TE’s on the roster???
Follet?
What has happened with Zack Follett? I feel like i haven’t heard his name once in the pre-season… is he even on the team?

Daunte's injury is bad news for the Lions
Whether he is our starter week 1 or our veteran back up, the Lions need Daunte at 100% for 2009. Hopefully it is very minor and he will be good to go for week 1.
Whats up with Stanton? Did he get hurt in the game?
Nobody knows.....
He was fine during and after the game…..he came to practice after the weekend and his knee was badly swollen.
Swartz's plan
Swartz is a smart guy – I bet he intended to start C-pep for the opener (and maybe still does).
If C-pep starts and does poorly in the first few games, it would be easy to justify putting Stafford in. Also, Stafford would have less pressure on him in that situation since C-Pep looked bad anyway.
If C-pep starts and does great – there’s no problem.
If Stafford started and did poorly, then it would be hard to bench the player that you selected with the first pick and are spending so much money on. It would be like admitting a big mistake.
This toe injury could derail what I’m guessing is Swartz’s plan to start C-pep.

That is very possible
Let’s just hope Stafford doesn’t do poorly.

That's another reason I think the Lions will go after Tavaris Jackson now
Because they will want a solid veteran (cough cough….even if Jackson is not much of a veteran, he is better than a lot of others, he can be gotten with a late round pick, and he has starting experience) if Daunte Culpepper can not go in week 1 and if Drew Stanton is likely to miss any significant amount of time. If they do get Jackson (if Stanton’s injury is more serious and if Daunte is unlikely to be able to start week 1) it is likely that they will cut Drew Stanton outright. It is also possible that they would put Stanton on the IR, keeping him around for next year when Daunte is gone (he will be gone, and if they have Jackson as a backup they could still use Drew as a 3rd option).
Agreed
I wouldn’t mind seeing Tavaris here as a backup, he can show flashes at times. His legs can also be useful.
