Friday Notes: Lions to Take Practice to Ford Field
- Don't forget, tomorrow is "Lions Uncaged" at Ford Field. Gates open at noon and you can get autographs until 12:45 p.m. The practice will start at 1 p.m. and is expected to last around two hours. FOX 2 Detroit will be broadcasting live from the practice from 2-3, and I will be providing live updates via Twitter on Pride of Detroit.
- Today's 7-on-7 drill went very well for Detroit's quarterbacks.
- As you know by now, injuries are really starting to pile up. Damion Cook is out for the season. Bryant Johnson is still out due to wounds from his golf cart accident. Casey FitzSimmons is going to be out for an extended period of time, as is Keith Smith, who has a groin injury. Maurice Morris, John Standeford, Dennis Northcutt (missed today's morning practice and only took part in individual drills in the afternoon), Brandon Pettigrew, Jake Nordin, Lydon Murtha, Jordon Dizon, Daniel Bullocks, and Louis Delmas have all suffered injuries that are of the day-to-day nature. Most haven't returned to practice yet, but it isn't expected that those players will be out for too long. At least that is the hope.
- Anthony Henry practiced at safety today, but it was mainly because Lions coaches want him to learn the position just in case depth continues to be thin with Bullocks and Delmas both injured.
- In case you ever attend a practice and wonder why the quarterbacks suddenly are throwing passes out of bounds on a consistent basis, it probably is because they are running a drill where throwing the ball away is actually somewhat encouraged.
- Aaron Brown had a long touchdown run during an 11-on-11 drill on Thursday.
(More after the jump)
- The Lions' defense has had 40 different blitzes installed already.
- Gunther Cunningham supposedly said this to Martin Mayhew after watching a 75-play video of a free agent:
"Last night, he had me look at 75 plays of a (free agent) player and he asked me, 'How'd you like him?' and I said, 'Eh, I've seen a lot better and you just wasted a lot of my time.' But that's my job, you know. You've got to look, and you've got to keep looking."
I would love to have seen the look on Mayhew's face after Cunningham delivered that line. - Gunther Cunningham's aggressiveness is rubbing off on his cornerbacks.
- You need a premium membership to read the article, but the title of this story about DeAndre Levy pretty much says it all: "Failing to Impress Coaching Staff."
- Jim Schwartz went on FOX Sports Radio recently. The audio can be found here.
- Three former Lions are headed to the UFL.
- The latest "Lions Congregation" is up at Church of Schwartz.

disappointed...
about Levy not impressing the coaching staff. I had high hopes for him as a big piece of the future Lions. Maybe he can turn it around the rest of camp
It looks like...
…all the collective moans, groans, and WTF’s released by the Lions fans watching the draft, maybe proved correct.
I still wish we would have taken K. Urbik OT at that spot…
Isn't Urbik a guard?
Why are you inferring that this draft might be a flop? Because Cunningham isn’t overly impressed with Levy? I don’t think that constitutes a failed draft class. My guess is that The Gun is taking aim at Levy through the media to light a fire under his ass. Up until that comment, I’ve heard nothing but positive things about Levy. I think it’s a wee bit too early to start calling this draft class a waste…
I don't know if Brefstink was specifically calling this draft class a failure
I think he was referring to Levy alone. Although, I think it’s much to early to call that anyway. I’m hoping for at least one of our drafted LB’s to make an impact, whether that’s Levy or Follett, I don’t know, but I have fairly high hopes for both of them.
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

I'm just talking about Levy...
and the pick in the third round. You cant tell me there is one Lions fan out there who jumped up and cheered when he was drafted with that pick. I’d wager a more common response was “who the hell is DeAndre Levy?” And yes he’s an OL that plays both G and T. He’s fighting for the Tackle spot in P-burgh…but that doesn’t matter.
But, like all loyal Lions fans, I gave the new front office and coach a pass on this pick because, after all, they should know. I really hope Levy pans out. But if you are going to build a new franchise, you absolutely cannot have draft failures in the early rounds. Most mock’s had Levy slotted way later…
It was an especially odd pick after they made the unorthodox (but correct) pick of Pettigrew, and Delmas. Everybody thought that if they went Stafford first, they would have to add an OL at some point. So when Levy’s name came up, it was truly shocking…Let’s hope he fills the potential the Lions saw in him…
Overall, I’d say our draft was very successful, and no where near a waste. Stafford, Pettigrew, Delmas, will start games. Williams, Brown, and Follett should be great special teams assets. And Hill and Murtha look like nice prospects…
And if Gunny
has to go to the media to light a fire under Levy’s ass, that doesn’t seem like it foreshadows well for his future. I would think a rookie on this team, where there is no past, and the future is wide open would be playing his ass off to win a roster spot, maybe even a starting role…
Lecy Will Be Fine......
……Hes a rookie……Way back when the coaching staff of the past didnt think Herman Moore was going to be able to cut it as a WR in the NFL……They were wrong….Go Lions!!!

The saddest thing is that picture
of Mayhew, Lewand, and WCF. Every coulple will go by without a WCF site-ting. And I only get my hopes up. I dont wish for the man to die. But, I dream of him just disappearing. Never to be heard of seen again. But, just like the herpes. He pops up. Damn!!!
