Gunther on Avril

I was a fan of Gunther pre-Detroit. Now that he is here. I am so pumped. he is intense man.

Here is what he had to say about Avril...

"Gunther Cunningham, the Detroit Lions' new defensive coordinator, sees shades of the late Derrick Thomas in Lions defensive end Cliff Avril." (Rob Widdis/Special to The Detroit News)

Derrick Thomas?!?!? Are you kidding me! Man I hope. Thomas was as dominate as anyone I have ever seen. He was as good as LT. I don't care what anyone says man. I will argue that all day. RIP Derrick.

Here is the whole story........

You HAVE to love Avril (Even though he got blown up by Felton today)

I am very curious of Gun. I did a little peeking at some of the Cheifs blogs and fan posts and they didn’t seem to care for the guy. They had pretty bad seasons the last few yrs and I just hope he is as advertised. Definitely love his enthusiasm.

Remember.....

…..They were running a different Defense and KC was very very young…..now yes detroit is young but Schwartz and Cunningham want same Defense……Cunningham and Edwards differed and they ran edwards def system

Damn straight Bennie

When Gun had free rain on the D-fence, K.C. brought heat all the time. Ofcourse we don’t have the secondary that they had back then but our Lb’s as a unit are better than anything that he has had, it has to be. I could easily see Simms or Peterson being cut into the mold of D. Thomas, the one thing that thomas had that wasn’t mentioned alot is he had this uncanny knack of knowing the snap count somehow, cause he was in the backfield on the snap a ton of times.and If Thomas would of had LB’ers like LT had in NY, umph, hard to say how more dominant he could of been.

Can Felton get some love?

Look back through the months….I am big on Felton. Bit on Avril…but Felton is going to be something in the NFL, hopefully with the Lions LOL

I'll get in on some of that love

I’ve always liked him and hope he gets a few carries near opponent’s goal-lines.

+1 I would like to see the Lions utilize their FB a little more.

I liked Cory Schlesinger and how the Lions used him in their offence back in the day. Felton looks like he could do the same.
How is he at catching the ball out of the backfield?

Decent hands hands

He played at Furman. Small school. But he domnated. He had something like 25 TDs this senior year and he wasnt the feature back. He was really a FB in a pro style offense.

Bennie is right

KC really kind of tied his hands when it came to deciding on personel and the scheme he would run. I think he will have alot more input here and him and Schwartz will be on the same page.

A little cynical

I am going to guess that the reporter asked if Cliff Avril reminded him of anyone he used to coach. I would guess with Avril being a speedy end that is gung-ho focused on QB sacks, that Thomas would be brought to mind. I used to love watching the Chiefs games on CBS to watch Thomas, but Avril has a long way to go. Let’s hope this soundbyte helps Cliff’s confidence into the season

Dude, how good was Derrick Thomas in Tecmo Bowl?

Kansas City was great with him and Okoye!
