Week 1 Analysis
I am sure someone has said something of this nature already, but I just wanted to speak my piece on the first game of the season. I have a few points I want to go over and see what you guys feel about them.
1.) Stafford's 3 INTs, to me, are somewhat forgivable. When your defense can't stop the other offense from putting early TDs on the board, it obviously forces the QB to have to throw more often. As a rookie QB competing against the best offense in the league last year (and most likely this year as well from the looks of it), I think Matt had a TON on his plate to deal with. As soon as we were down 14-0, I knew he would throw INTs. It was inevitable. He's a rookie. He's going to have to learn...and unfortunately, it will be the hard way a lot of times. His PC% is a little bit disconcerting, but I do not think that will be a constant thing with him. Again....first game jitters...trying to outscore an unstoppable Drew Brees-led offense AT the Superdome....give the guy a pass this time. Our offense is coming around.
2.) Schwartz = serious. There is something different about him. He's a no-bull kind of guy, which is something we aren't used to in Detroit since before Mariucci. The players' respect for him is going to shine through as the season progresses and their play improves soundly. As a defensive coordinator from the great Titans defense, he will not stand for the performance on Sunday. There were some bright spots, but obviously there is much fixing to do in the coming weeks.
This will be a season of trials and tribulations. We will not make the playoffs. But we will make strides and improvements. Just be patient, my fellow Lions fans. It will come.

that's a positive spin
I don’t really think three interceptions in one game are entirely forgivable. Expected, maybe, given that he’s a rookie in his first game, but the fact is he’s an extremely highly-paid NFL quarterback—he’s not supposed to throw the ball to the opposing team. He doesn’t play against New Orleans’ offense—he plays against their defense.
I know Stafford’s going through a learning process, he’s a rookie, yadda-yadda, but he’s still the guy on the field. The guys on the field need to produce results, and they don’t really deserve credit until they do something good. I think they can, but yesterday they didn’t.
We allowed Mike Bell to run for 143 yards and 5.1 ypc. Mike Bell? How are we going to do against Adrian Peterson next week? I’ll bet he’s looking forward to Sunday.
Yesterday’s game had all the markings of last season: going down by multiple touchdowns early in the first quarter, showing a few moments of hope on offense that don’t ever really materialize into a comeback, then seeing the defense get tired in the 3rd quarter and watching them just get gashed up the middle while the clock burned down.

Once again
…never said they were entirely forgivable. Please read thoroughly before commenting. I said they were somewhat forgivable…meaning, you can’t forget it happened but the situation was different than if a veteran did it.

Also...
Peyton Manning’s rookie season was awful. 3-13. His performance wasn’t great.
Peterson will probably run all over us. That’s been said already. We’ve been decent at keeping him down in the past, but they have a gunslinger for a QB now….they can keep defenses more honest now.
I do agree. Multiple touchdowns in the first half are not good. But like I said, give them a chance to get in a seasonal rhythm.

The 3 INTs
Didn’t lose the game…
The shitty Defense did.
Keys to the Loss….
- NO QB pressure
- NO Rush Defense
- Both Resulting in poor Pass Defense… NO secondary can guard a Wr for 15seconds…lol
- NO Rushing Offense
- Resulting in A LOT of pressure on the QB
- Resulting in hurried throws and forcing balls into coverage.
I like to be to the point. What’d I miss?

More keys to the loss...
…one bad call by the ref took that CJ touchdown (and perhaps some of Stafford’s throwing momentum) away. That didn’t decide the game, obviously…but it was a mental blow. I think it had a bigger impact than we might realize, mentally. Then again, N.O. would have probably scored 1-2 mins later on a Drew Brees pass anyway.

Great Post
Stafford performed, shocking as this may be to some, like a rookie making his NFL debut against a team probably bound for the playoffs and beyond.
Schwartz will correct what he can, and adjust to what he must.
This was a terrible performance, not suprising, but terrible even by low standards. It will be slow, and probably very painful, but I still think Schwartz will get the job done.

Agree 100% with Your Post......
……..Staffs season is going to be a rollercoaster…….He was starting to take chances and thred the needle in the 2nd half……I also think the pick in the red zone although unaccetable was caused in large part by Sauckus getting a fasle start on the 1st play and killing the momentumn right away then staff throws the pick…..Remember this season is going to be up and down and we were never going to make the playoffs so let Staff have his growing pains and lets see how the Defense does against a team that doesnt have Drew Brees.

Just a side note...
But how drunk do you think the refs got after that game?

They did have a rough one eh?
They may have been drunk when that thing started. I guess the players aren’t the only ones with a little rust on them when the real season starts.

Like what you said about Schwartz
I don’t think the shoddy defense is going to sit well with him. As CLF said it wasn’t the offense – its the horrid defense that is killing this squad. I keep harping on this one point but: WE NEED TO KEEP OPPOSING QB’S UNDER 100 PASSER RATING TO HAVE A SHOT AT WINNING.
We haven’t done that in I don’t know how long. CLF hit it on the head about the BIGGEST problems are on the DEFENSIVE side of the ball.

I Agree
And don’t worry, I’m a patient guy, and I think we as Lions fans are pretty patient, I mean, we are still waiting for the Lions to be successful and it’s been 50 years already. Another couple won’t hurt us.

I liked Schwartz' post-game
I liked Schwartz’ demeanor in the post-game press conference. You could tell he was pissed and he wasn’t go to go thru the “it’s on me” crap that Marinelli shoved down our throat week after week after week. I guarantee you he was nodding at last year’s press conferences when he said he won’t be pulling that crap in the pressers. I have so much more respect for this coaching staff; I really, really want to see Schwartz & co. succeed, I like the way he runs the ship so far. He really commands a lot more respect than the past doofuses that were running the show – if us fans are feeling that way, I can almost be certain that the players feel the same if not more so
