Chiefs Waive Turk McBride; Lions to Claim Him?
The Kansas City Chiefs waived defensive lineman Turk McBride tonight, and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, who broke the story, thinks the Lions will claim him.
And so he'll be claimed by the Lions.
This time, we aren't kidding. Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham served in that same capacity in K.C. when McBride was drafted, making McBride an obvious candidate for Honolulu Blue.
And, actually, the move to Motown would put McBride on a team that has actually won more games than the Chiefs since he entered the league in 2007.
(Our last win actually came against the Chiefs near the end of the 2007 season)
Based on the how the defensive ends played against the Saints and the fact that Paul Spicer visited today, I'd say Florio's guess is a pretty good one. The Lions still control the top spot in waiver priority, and McBride would be an upgrade over someone like Copeland Bryan, who the Lions claimed on September 6.

I dont know alot about Turk..
Just that he has started 9 games last season. At LDE, with no sacks. He is young. Was drafted in the second round in 2007. So why not. Give him a shot. See if he has anything to offer.

at upgrade over Copeland???
who wouldn’t be, I still think Alama should still be on the team…

I still think Fluellen should play end on obvious running downs...
…with Avril in on passing downs. He’s too small against the run.

How much of an upgrade?
The Lions could continue with a revolving door on the defensive line all year. Unless the guy is significantly better or does something that we currently don’t have the capability of doing, I would pass.
But then I know virtually nothing about him. We will see what the Lions will do.

I would think . . .
I would think if he were signed, he’d be replacing a guy like Hunter—but Hunter was actually an impact special teamer and promising reserve in Green Bay, before they switched schemes and let him go.

Our Dline
Will continue to be a patchwork of guys too old to play, guys too young to play, and castoffs from other teams until next off season.
I don’t think the peices we have on the line are bad, but I think we need that one piece of the puzzle to make everyone better. If we had some sort of freak edge rusher like John Abraham or some stout DT like Kevin Williams, then the likes of Alama and Fluellen will look much better.
I see us using our #1 pick on a D lineman or possibly going after a top tier one in free agency. Until then, lets all have fun riding the revolving door of mediocrity.

I think we will use.......
…..a 1st rounder on the DE from florida next year….cantrememebr his name……No top O lineman next year to take in round 1

Carlos Dunlap is who you are thinking of ........I think.
I disagree about the O linemen. Russell Okung sounds like he is an “elite” LT and could be available if the Lions pick in the top six or so. The other LTs [Bulaga, Williams, Brown] all appear to be later first or early second round picks.
There are a few very good DTs too; Suh of Nebraska and McCoy of Oklahoma could be top ten picks.
I am trying not to think about our draft picks for 2010 yet. I have enough to worry and argue about.

Isnt he a junior though?
If he comes out he will defeinetly be a elite LT

No, Okung is a senior.

I read that he was considering to enter the draft in 2009 but figured he would be better rewarded by hanging around another year. The difference between a late first round/early second and an early first round pick I guess. Good decision I think.

I agree......
…..Besides guys that are high on draft boadrs now could be late rounders next year……look at that Johnson guy from georgia tech…..he was suposed to be a top 10 pick this past draft.

I'd prefer a DT with our first pick
McCoy please.

I think our edge rushers are OK - Fluellen and D White
We’re just not getting the push up the middle. We need an Albert Haynesworth or GASP Shaun Rogers. Can anyone convince Jerry Ball out of retirement??

That was what I was thinking they would do
Go out for a free agent. Haynesworth is taken. I don’t know if Big Baby will come back.
Who else is out there that might come due for free agency and how much do you see the Lions spending? Not $100 million. Maybe we grab a NT from a 3-4 defense and use them in the middle. I bet Seymor might be ready to move after this year…

Who knows??
I am at a loss for words when it comes to this team defensively. I don’t know who or what will help our obvious porous defense but I put my faith in Schwartz and his crew. I definitly think the D will improve this week against Minnesota given that the game is in Detroit and Gunny has another week to work out the kinks defensively.

much easier to attack & gameplan for a ground game than an air-arsenal
that brees puts on the field. i expect to see a very agressive defense. plus, we have shown decent games vs ap in the past, forcing some fumbles too.

Good point re: AP
We oddly enough have held AP to just marginal games against us. We always seem to play AP tough – now as for Favre he has beaten us in every way shape and form so I am still afraid of that.

i get that one...especially on the deep ball
look for berrian/harvin to have a big game. but i am not sure that favre can win games on his own any more…he needs the balance as a minimum

and the construction of the Franken-dline continues
spare parts from upper echelon teams, I can maybe understand, but when we’re bringing in guys cuts by the likes of the Chiefs…I know Gun has a relationship with this guy, but, sometimes I wish the Lions would stick with, say Patriots castoffs or the like.
And yeah, I know, this isn’t a particularly useful comment, as it has nothing to do with whether Turk McBride can play or not. Heck, I hope he shows up and makes an important tackle on Sunday, or whenever, assuming he does get signed by the Lions.
It’s jsut that the past few years of Marinelli bringing in marginal guys from Tampa because he used to know them when they used to be able to play back in the day has really soured me on the waiver wire pickups of players because of previous familiarity by the new breed coaches.

I completely agree. When we’re signing guys who can’t make the Chiefs or the Bucs what does that say about us?? I sick of these cast-offs. Stick with the rookies and 2nd year guys and take your lumps now.
