Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Let's rewind for a moment & take a deep breath...my glass of kool-aid is still half full.

For the second week in a row I have missed the game live but watched it off the PVR later in the day.  I have avoided POD in the mean time so as to keep it interesting as I watch & catch up.  Upon completion, as many of you have also felt, I let out a big sigh; look at the schedule and start to look at the coming match ups.   I come on over to POD to see the recaps & comments...and short of a few, I have had more disappointment reading than I have had in watching the games.  No offense to anyone here...but can we collectively rewind for a few minutes here, remember where each of us were four months ago...heck even ten months ago.  Lets remember what we were concerned with then, what we were hoping for come the regular season and perhaps most importantly where our expectations & excitment were placed.  I appologize in advance for the excessive use of the word "collectively".

Star-divide

First I will take us back to last fall...perhaps the starting point of our new found hope, and perhaps also the set up for the feeling many of have now.  Millen was fired.  Yes the front office had made many changes & overhauls since this point...but the fact is we all know the damage that was done by Millen.  We all know how long it takes to rebuild when you only have one or two draft picks still with the team from the last 5 (or more) drafts.  Lets not forget this.  Collectively we all celebrated.  Collectively we all saw the clean slate & fresh start.  Collectively we all had hope restored as our team began its rebuilding from the Millen wrecking ball.  Collectively though we all knew that this was only the start of a long process, and all agreed that this was the begining of a two or even three year campaign to restore the roar.

Next we saw the early reviews on the new front office.  Mayhew & Co shrewdly traded away two huge headaches in Kitna & Williams for draft picks and a DB who is holding his own.  They also brought in a wealth of knowledge including two former NFL DC's in Schwartz & Cunningham.  Collectively we saw the promise that this attention to making over the  defense  which was the worst part of the team over the previous years.  This attention to the defense brought in some immediate upgrades not only in knowledge & background; but also in players.  The likes of Julian Peterson, Grady Jackson, Philip Buchannon, Eric King and perhaps most importantly in my eyes Larry Foote.  All came into town dedicating themselves to being part of the solution.  Larry took it one step further realizing the need for a solution not only for the Lions as a team, but for the city of Detroit.  Again, collectively we looked and saw the improvement not only in mindset from this side of the ball but in ability.  Yet we all stepped back and tempered our expectations.  Saying "if this turns out to be a top 20 defense it will be a welcomed change & improvement".  There were predictions that gave bigger hopes, but most were happy to hope for a middle of the road defense.

The next chapter was the draft.  We all sat back in awe.  There was an incredible amount of energy on this site leading up to the draft.  There were a million and one "IMO's".  At the end, we saw a front office stay true to their word in drafting the best player available as there were too many needs to draft need based.  The result was drafting a QB of the future, a TE that has pro-bowl potential in all aspects of his game, a safety that once he learns to tackle by putting his head & shoulders in front of the ball carrier will be a dynamo and a few projects for the coaches.  We stole Aaron Brown late in the draft & added some depth to build on.  But as excited as we all were, as much kool-aid as we were drinking...our expectations were still tempered.  Most agreed that a 5 win season would be a success.  Some went so far as to say a 1 win season would be a success.

Collectively we looked at the schedule & gasped.  How can a team coming off 0-16 face playoff teams every week through the first six games?  I know I'm likely not the only one who did the math here, but when I looked at the schedule I began preparing myself for a team that had gone 0-23, 0-6 this year coming out of the bye.  My only hope was that they played competitively, didn't fall behind by 21 pts in the first quarter of games, showed improvement week over week...and still had their wits about them coming out of the by to face the second half.

The OTA's came and went; before we knew it we were projecting our starting line ups.  We came out of the preseason with our 3rd string QB being our most prolific, our run defense being tops (or top five) in the league, our ground game on offense doing the same and one heck of a decision to make on our starting QB.  The decision was made perhaps by default, and the franchise was placed on the shoulders of a young kid who played for the same high school as Bobby Lane; who I believe sold his soul to the devil to bring us Millen but that is for another day.  More here than ever, we reminded ourselves to temper expectations.  We knew we had a gunslinger who was going to make rookie mistakes, who as any gunslinger was going to throw interceptions.  We had an unproven defense.  An offensive line that could be slightly above average.

And right before kick off in week one, the fan base grew from what I saw here on POD.  Welcoming back many Lions faithful who had left through the years.  Thanking many new comers & supporters from other teams for best wishes.

And then week one happened.  As Drew so poetically put it, the Lions are exactly who we collectively thought they were.  They showed flashes of potential, they made mistakes in moments of idiocy, they got out played by the top rated offense in the league hands down.  Out came the critics in full force as if we were supposed to win that game.  Interestingly enough, "a higher rated team" in the Eagles were ripped apart by those same Saints; the difference being that we actually scored more points than the Eagles did.  Now I know that Kevin Kolb is no Donovan McNabb, but he does have more experience than Stafford does in terms of NFL tenure.  I thought the Lions did as good of a job as can be expected vs the Saints, and now I think even more so after seeing the result vs the Eagles.

Then week two.  Again, the Lions showed that they are exactly who we thought they were.  They showed a lot of piss & vinegar on the defensive side of the ball through the first half.  Containing AP & getting pressure AND sacks against the passing attack.  Kevin Smith & the ground game, lets leave it at it was well above average vs the Williams wall.  Then the turnovers happened.  The poor calls against the Lions.  The poor play calling from the OC.  No down field looks.  The bad reads....and AP took over in the fourth quarter as he has and will continue to do against most if not all teams this year.  Yes the team was in it, and played as they normally do vs the Vikings.  Yes they had the game in hand.  But they are still the Lions, who are very much mid rebuilding.  Which cannot be mistaken with a top tier team using the draft & free agency to replace one or two starters per year.  Bottom line, it was a heck of a game that continued to show progress.  Yet again I come to POD to share with my fellow fans to find the critics out in full force.  For this game I can understand a bit more as the Lions had the lead at half time & literally had a multiple personality disorder impersonation...BUT everything we collectively wanted to see just a couple months ago was there.  Offensively we ran effectively vs the #1 run defense.  Defensively we got pressure on the QB & had multiple sacks.  This was a different team than in any game I watched last year.  But they are still the same rebuilding team we all reminded eachother to have tempered expectations for.  Why?  Because they are young, don't have rapport with eachother yet, they aren't as skilled as most other teams across the board yet.  My biggest concern with this game is not what I saw from the players...it was from Coach Schwartz.  Did anyone else see how relaxed he was coming out of half time?  He was full of smiles & jokes.  The teams personality on the field matched this.  They didn't have the fire or intensity they had in the first half.  Schwartz should have had the same grit he started the game with and prevented the team from becoming complacent.  But as much of a learning experience for the players this is; I have to remind myself it is for Schwartz too.

To me, holding on to my preseason expectations, I must say I am pleased with what I have seen so far.  Yes I am frustrated & don't want to go 0-23.  But this team is who I thought they were.  They have had me on the edge of my seat not only in frustration but in sheer excitement.  I can see the potential.  Yet somehow, there are many people who have lost their thought process from just weeks ago.  And perhaps it is that heavy feeling in the pit of our stomaches...the deja vu feeling.  But this is when we need to collectively catch ourselves, pinch ourselves.  Remember what our expectations were going into the season.  If you had told me six months ago that we'd be in the game at half time vs both the Saints & the Vikings in back to back weeks I would have been very happy and likley called you crazy.  And perhaps that is why the frustration is abound.  The team has shown so much progress & potential at times that we lose sight of our tempered expectations... when they slip into the mistakes we have seen before it feels like we were slapped in the face.

There is a tough road ahead of us.  Are some of those games winables? Yes, most certainly.  Are they losable?  Yes, most definately.  I don't expect this team to go 8-8.  Again, I will be very happy with a 5-11 or 4-12 season.  Any team can win on any given Sunday, ours will come.  But don't lose faith now.  Don't lose sight of our expectations when the team started the OTA's.  We must collectively support the team & not call for their heads.  Be critical, but don't abandon the team.  If this team is to get through this tough schedule, especially the front half, with their wits about them & their heads held up...trying to do everything in their power not to let the "here we go again" enter their heads...as fans we must do the same.  I used the word disappointment before the jump because this is not the same group I remember from two weeks ago, two months ago or ten months ago.  This was a very realistic group prior to week one.  I have read so much negativity here of late it truly saddens me as a fan.  Don't get me wrong, I love the passion, I respect the thoughts & opinions...and although it is great to have high hopes, our expectations must remain realistic.  There are a few that have held  steadfast to this...but not many.  Unless you were one of the few that honestly thought this team was going to the SuperBowl this year, you cannot be disappointed with the team thus far.  Again I say there have been mistakes, but we knew there would be.  There have been bumps in the road, but we knew there would be.  There have been moments of WOW, but we knew there would be.  Progress my friends, progress is what we are seeing.  Let these guys build some continuity, some consistency of knowing what eachother can do in a game situation...most importantly... before we call this season a mirror of last year...or call it another failure...or call these the same old Lions...having cut throat criticism just to be that guy who said "I told you so back in week 1"...cause if that is your mentality...jump ship and go play some more blame game with the kings of it...Kitna & Williams.

I enjoy the discussions, through the highs & lows...but remember this is our team, we are part of it by being a fan.  And every team is only as strong as its weakest link.  Lets not let that be us the fans.  We are entitled to be critical, but we are bound by our loyalty.  I don't think I am alone in my thinking, I may be, but I hope not...lets see where we are come week 17.  Until then...Go Lions!

We've come a long way in the last ten months...but we have a long way to go in the next four.

BTW...it was great to not only see the Cowboys lose last night in their home opener...and even more so for Roy to do zip zilch.  Looks good on you my friend, you wanted the starlight of the lonestar state...now you got it...enjoy!!

Nice, well thought-out post

While I agree with you that we need to temper our expectations, that doesn’t mean we can’t be disappointed. Am I surprised that we lost our first 2 games to potential contenders in the NFC? Absolutely not. Am I disappointed? Absolutely.

A loss is a loss, and every time we lose its going to hit me the same as a fan.

That being said this week’s loss was much “better”. We contended again. Our defense played to its full potential. Our running game was successful against its toughest competition for the entire year.

But to ask fans not to be disappointed after dropping a 10-point lead is silly. Regardless of pregame expectations, losing a game after an impressive first half is going to disappoint me every time.

sorry, i'm not asking for you not to be disappointed

all i am saying is that if we don’t let our expecatations get ahead of ourselves, go back to the fact that none of us truly believed this team to win all their games & likely not to win until the second half…so having said that, if we know this, we shouldn’t be as disapointed as some have shown. in all reality, given those expectations that the majority had, we should be thrilled that they we still in both games as late as they were. and our defense holding the vikings to under 300yds was no small feat either! sure i would love to have seen them win, as there was certainly opportunity. but i look at this as a great step forward with all the new players & schemes being inputted. its not like this team has been together playing the same playbook for the last five years now. i see a lot of positives. to each their own. and i completely get the “we were so close to winning before that idiot did ____(fill in the blank with any number of examples)_”. but the reality is again, the team is exactly where most of us thought they’d be…and i happen to think they are doing better than at least i expected this early on overall. sure i thought stafford would play better. i knew he’d make mistakes…just didn’t expect 5 in two games with only 1td. but you gotta think he’s putting pressure on himself as the #1 pick to put the team on his shoulders too. either way though, with all that has changed…i didn’t even think we’d be in the first five or six games. so looking at things now…i am excited to see what this team can do with a couple more weeks under their belts and having faced some of the leagues best…i can’t wait to show the league how much better than the bengals/browns/rams we are & that the lions are not the basement #32 ranked team in the league. we weren’t last year imo, despite the record, i believe we had a better team than several that finished ahead of us in w/l’s…but at the end of the day that is how teams are measured…so i can’t wait to show first hand this is a better team.

Very good.

Well thought out and balanced…. unlike some of the emotional sermons given about the failure of the team and who’s head should be on the chopping block that I’ve been reading all day.

Thank you for this.

The sad thing is that one minute you say you are not reading my posts.....

And the next minute you are attacking me for having an opinion that you disagree with. You are a moron. I think you can be promoted to biggest douche on the site. You don’t even take the time to read that I agree with most of what is being said. You just see what you consider as wrong or negative and then you try to react twice as negatively. Seriously, we’d all be a little less stupid if you would just shut up.

I don't ever recall attacking you for...

What are you?

The F-ing blog police? What’s it to you what I say, how I say it, or how many times I repeat it? Need I remind you that you were the one who started tossing around insults? All I did was fight fire with fire. Yeah, I think you are a supreme douchebag for throwing petty insults at me for whatever reason. Instead of attacking the posts, you choose to attack the poster….like a douche. So….looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck…..it must be a duck! Douche…..

Of course, you can redeem yourself and regain the small amount of respect that I had for you prior to today. All you have to do is admit you were wrong and say you’re sorry. If you aren’t man enough for that, then I have no use for you.

except to wash away that “not so fresh feeling”? To both of you: And you both know I respect you 2; Quit bickering about being frustrated with our Lions losing ways. Those days are coming to an end in the near future. If you guys want to call someone a masangil product then attack me, I’m the crazy 1 that actually thought we could make the playoffs and contend for a division title. And now after 2 weeks am already looking towards the Rams game for our first victory. Although I am hopeful that we end this streak this weekend against a team that has traditionally owned us like a pimp owns his whores.

Actually, if they want to continue to argue with each other the way they are, I'd prefer if they didn't do it here

I don’t know why so many arguments break out, but to everyone, loosen up and stop taking this so seriously. I’m getting sick and tired of the fights on here, and I’m about this close to just banning people right off the bat. Enough is enough.

In your defense...

…and I don’t know where this all started, but I’ve had similar problems before. It’s one thing to argue a point or to counter an argument, it’s another thing all together to just start blurting out personal insults of a childish nature. To me, once the disagreement has resorted to “you’re an idiot”, the only options you have are to acknowledge that you’ve obviously won the argument since there is no logical retort, or to slap back. It typically takes a better man than myself to choose the former option.

Nice, thoughtful post london...

I agree with you on just about every point. Progress is progress. It’s undeniable that we have made some from week one to week two. Patience is a virtue most Lion’s fans simple don’t have. I agree with others that we can still be disappointed in losses, while maintaining realistic expectations… which should be relatively low.

Nice post… let’s see more!

thanks everyone

with all the criticism floating around here of late, i felt it was important to remind everyone of where we were and how far we’ve come…i must say that not every post on the site of late has been negative, but for the most part there has been much more than usual and that bothered me. we have a team full of promise, and as i said, perhaps this is the single biggest contributor to the frustration/dissappointment of late. we have been in these games. we kept perhaps the best back in the league to under 100yds (probably one of the couple times that will happen all year) and at the same time kept one of the most prolific passers historically to under 160yds. i see a lot of promise, as i am sure everyone else does. we need to be careful not to lose sight of who this team is & how far they have come. and to realize that if this team can remain on this path, keeping their spirits about them through a tough schedule, there are some definite winable games in the second half (and a couple potentials in the front half if we get the bounces). but the only way we make to see those games is if we keep our heads on straight. its too easy for us as fans & them as the players to fall into that mind trap…and if that happens it will truly be a long season…again. as i said, i appreciate all the discussions through the highs & lows…lets just keep it constructive and not on the track of “i told you so”.

I am going to assume here . . .so don't hate on me.

But we had another franchise in Michigan not so long ago that was just horrible to watch and they couldn’t even fill half of a brand new stadium that sits right next door to Ford Field. They brought in a new coach and had a couple more bad seasons before having their breakout year and went to the world series. And before that there was this other team that was horrible for about 10 years after dismantling the bad boys, and the same thing happened a new home a new GM and coach and within a 2 year period they became world campions after whipping a heavily favored Lakers team with 2 Superstars in Shaq and Kobie. And do I even need to go down Red Wings road? Prior to getting the best GM in the world in Ken Holland the only thing red on the wings were the bloody faces that played for them, But they drafted a future HOF center and started putting pieces around him and now look at them, 20 years later they are still the best franchise in the league. LONDONLION thank you for reminding me of where we were only 12 months ago, and where we are today, we are very competetive and I do tink we are on the right path back to greatness. Thank you brother.

i'm just glad its served the intended purpose!

it happens to many franchises across many sports…there are rare exceptions. the red wings, frustratingly as a leafs fan, seemed to have mastered it over the last decade or two. the key is, and the nfl describes it perfectly…not for long. both the ups & downs…enjoy the ride!

Hey being a leafs fan isn’t bad is it? If the Leafs had the money to throw around that the wings did/do it would be a different story for them. Oh that reminds me He everyone please go out and buy a couple dozen Little Sleezers pizza’s the Tigers need another bat and the Wings are about to start the season, Mr. Illitch could ue a couple more $$$$$.

LOL!

thats part of the issue, the leafs do have $$. lots of it. saved over from the pinching ballard days that lasted through to the early 90’s. they have a sold out arena…40yr wait list for season tickets. perfect example of why a good product doesn’t necessarily = sellouts & vice versa. despite a team that is up & down more than a yo-yo, that place is sold out every night. they have the money, but never used to spend it. then they started to, but on players on the backside of their carreers…ie. mogilny. their heading in the right direction from the second half last year & into this year…but talk about frustrating fanhoods…leaf nation is dedicated…ownership had 0 incentive to put a championship team on the ice as there were sellouts no matter what.

First off, great post. You really did make a lot of sense on many of your items.

I will respectfully disagree in the following ways:

While my kool-aid glass is not emptied (yet), I am very disappointed. I am looking for progress, as you mentioned. Unfortunately, I am seeing too much inconsistency. Some of the ups and downs come from young players…to be expected. Some of the issues are coming from Julian Peterson, Jeff Backus, Daniel Loper, Dennis Northcutt…get my point. Too many vets, making idiotic mistakes.

My whole goal for the season (notice I said “My goal”) was to get positions set. Meaning things that we are NOT looking for next year in the off season. I am not seeing that as much as I would like. Schwartz has not called yet, so I have not expressed this opinion to him.

I will keep this short, because there has only been two games played!

Per londonlion’s post, I am looking at this as a long term project. I do realize that a new offense and defense are probably a big portion of the problem.

I will keep the faith, to some extent. However, we have been sold this bill of goods before so I am a bit leary. As long as these guys can show that they are busting tail out there, I will hang on to some optimism until next year.

by The Maestro on Sep 22, 2009 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

i do see your point

but again take with a grain of salt. vets too will always make mistakes…just hopefully not as excrutiatingly timely ie. on a 45yrd pass on 3rd & 10. these mistakes are being compounded by rookie mistakes. and just when we think the rookie has made a great play…then we are slapped by a vet making a mistake. this will get better as the rookies start making better plays more consistently. i hope…

sorry, and i completely agree with the fact that your goal of setting our line up

should be one of the biggest goals for this year…so that when we start next season we don’t have 15 new starters. we need continuity.

Agree ++

But lets remember folks, this is only after two games with an almost completely retooled defence, and an offence with a rookie QB.

They need a chance to establish the consistency [the good kind] that we want to see.

Great post!

I totally agree that level of negativity here has considerably increased lately as opposed to the off-season period. Thankfully, it is not the same here as on MLive (I need to stop reading their comments section)… But I cannot blame Lions fans for being disappointed and I cannot tell any of you not to feel that way. But I have to say this, ever since I`ve joined POD it didn`t take me much time to realize that I might be dealing with the most faithful fanbase there ever existed. Not being able to see your team winning championship games, or winning any games for that matter, and still be behind it is priceless. As a new Lions fan I have not yet accumulated lots of disappointment to be pessimistic or negative and I hope I will never be. My glass of "whatcha call it" is only two sips empty so I consider it full. Who wants some?

Go Lions!!! And bring in the Skins already!

Can I just say this...

…and I hate to do this on a positive post, but I have to know…what is it about the Lions over the last decade could possibly make you WANT to be a fan? Sorry guys, I know this is a rah-rah post, but you have to admit that the team has been dreadful for a while now and I’m always curious how the Lions are attracting new fans.

Mushy, I think that is the problem...they are not attracting many new fans.

Personally, I am a long time fan so I can’t answer your question, but I have recently adopted the Jaguars as my AFC team because I like the underdog aspect of their team and franchise. I also like their emphasis on the run game and defence.

Its not working out so great as they are 0 and 2 and looked dreadful at home versus Arizona.

I have already

explained my reasons to root for the Lions when I first time posted here. And I guess that post is easy to find on this blog. Now diagnose me with "underdog aspect" all you like, but I didn’t just jump on this team’s bandwagon. I`m not quite sure they have had any for a while. And Mushy, if you have a problem with your team being able to somehow attract new fans, even from so far away, so be it. Do I have to give up on my decision to make you happier?

No....

I think what he wanted to know was why did you choose the Lions. Yes, your answer can easily be found here:

Very cool post by the way.

It certainly does explain it, and forgive me for still being so suprised. Living here most of my life I have come to expect and accept the Lions fate more often than not and I’ve been very honest about the fact that if not for Barry Sanders I wouldn’t be nearly as obsessed with this team as I am. It’s just a foreign concept to me that the Lions would attract new fans BECAUSE of all the losing.

I`m glad

you`ve read it. It`s been a while now since I`ve posted that one. And yes, this whole Lions thing here IS really an obsession in my case. POD at home, POD at work. Reading, watching, making my wife pissed off…but just cant` resist, man.

Yeah sorry if I wasn't clear.

I don’t have a problem with it at all. I am just blown away that it happens. I suppose from an underdog standpoint I can see it, but when I think of underdogs I typically think of teams that have no business winning but in spite all odds are getting the job done. They give you something to root for that is unexpected and therefore so much more rewarding. The Lions have fit only one characteristic of an underdog for several years now…they are rarely favored to win. But when they do exactly what they are supposed to do, and lose games at a historic rate, I am stunned that they attract any new fans but I’m very happy that they do.

I liked the logo....

Not the best reason. Not changing now though, I got blue and silver blood now.

I agree, there is something special about our logo....

….that’s one of the first things that attracted me to the Lions back when I was a kid….to this day, I love our leaping Lion. I’m really glad they didn’t do a total revamp when they messed w/ our logo earlier this year

Good post.

I personally think a lot of this stems from the fact that there was a lot of…what was probably unjustified…optimism before the season started. I won’t name names, but there were quite a few that were muttering Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Miami Dolphin examples of how quickly this could turn around. I think the majority of this group was being a little more realistic, but of that majority there have been quite a few that haven’t exactly “gotten their way”, so to speak, about the way things have gone since before the draft even took place. For those that have felt that way, I think it’s only natural to be jaded, especially when you consider this is a franchise that has a history of making a mess out of potential great situations.
Since I include myself in that group, I must admit that I would feel considerably more confident, and be a lot more positive, if I knew for certain that management knew what they are doing. Since the Lions haven’t won a championship since my Mom was an infant…confidence is something that is tough to come by as a Lions fan. Be that as it is, and maybe I’m setting myself up for another heartbreak…I do have a “gut feeling” that this thing is still headed in the right direction. Are they going about it the way I wanted to see it done, absolutely not…but I’m willing to give this more time…I know they’ll need it.

If we win one game..

this year. I will be pumped. I don’t think you can always measure progress with wins and losses. I hate losing and this “streak” is painful but I believe in the power of the schwartz and in stafford.

Main thing I'm looking for this season

Awesome post London, keep it up. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. The biggest think I’m excited about seeing this season is a massive improvement in clock management, game management, and coaching calls from the sidelines. We are all aware that we have a young QB that is going to make mistakes and we still don’t have a full cupboard when it comes to depth and talent – that is obviously going to take a few years to fill up. But one area that we DEFINITELY can do a 180 on this year is our decisions from the sidelines. That is one of the biggest frustrations I’ve had in the past few years – I had absolutely no faith in Marinelli and these other coaches that we’ve had roaming the sidelines the past few years. If we see a consistent and huge improvement in that area by the end of the year, I’ll feel a lot better about our future. I agree, Schwartz and co. will make some of their own mistakes as well, as this is his first head coaching gig – but overall I am expecting and hoping to see a big improvement in that area. So at least we can have confidence in having well-thought out half-time adjustments, gameplans, etc. Time will tell I guess
