10,000 Tickets Unsold for Redskins Game

I figured there would be more tickets available this week than there were last Wednesday for the Vikings game, but I never would have imagined that over twice as many would be available.  Last week there were 4,000 tickets that needed to be sold, and the Lions received an extension and reached a sellout on Friday.  Well, don't expect that to happen this week.

The Detroit Lions have more than 10,000 tickets remaining for Sunday's game against Washington, team spokesman Bill Keenist said today.

The Lions aren't even close enough to a sellout receive a 24-hour extension, so it appears that the first blackout of the season for Detroit will become official tomorrow afternoon.

…….but since there is 10,000 tickets remaining why not go if your within 100 miles?…..I know I would be.

Oh I didnt know they were that expensive.....

…..back in 1992 – 94 we had 3 season tickets and they were $25 a seat…..I knew the prices would go up but I didnt think they cost $100 per seat…….I wouldnt go either

thats the good seats but still

Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??

by det32 on Sep 23, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the cheap seats are still $35...

…+ service charges. My brother sat lower bowl sideline this past Sunday for $30/seat. Poor ticket scalpers can’t even make a buck in the D anymore.
I’m planning on going down there and picking up some seats on the cheap too. The product on the field may not be where I want it to be, but I hate blackouts!

Well, think of it this way- now several thousand people can spend their Sunday afternoon doing something useful rather than subjecting themselves to the misery of the Detroit Lions.

On a related note, I’ve been to exactly one Lions game as an adult, and it was honestly one of the most dismal experiences of my life. I can totally understand why people aren’t buying tickets.

No, I live out on the east coast now, so I don’t even really have the opportunity to, unless I wanted to buy a dish or use justin.tv or something.

I just felt that the obvious smart-ass comment “Lions game blacked out = good thing” needed to be made.

by Anonymosity on Sep 23, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

The last

game I was at was when we beat the Vikings before we moved to Ford Field. I’m not going to waste my money to go see a game until I can see we may actually win a few. I’m not asking for a lot I want just 6 wins this year. I feel that is doable. When I see that then I will go to games again. Until then I will just watch another team on Sunday when we are blacked out. I’m like a lot of fans and don’t have a ton of money so I wont waste it to go watch us lose week in and week out.

I think I was at the same game, maybe not

I’ve smoked ALOT of pot since then so I’m not sure. I called a Terry Fair pick6 while the play developed and BAM! thats what happened. If thats the same game, it’s a small world after all….
Maybe I’ll skip a bill and go to this game…

How is it possible...

…that Arizona needed an extension to sell out their home opener. This team was a defensive stop away from winning a Super Bowl last year!!! Talk about a city that doesn’t deserve an NFL team!

by Mushy on Sep 23, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

Success Is new to that franchise......

……..It also a fairly new franchise……They dont have a solid fan base like Detroit does.

by BennieBladesFan on Sep 23, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Explain San Diego?

Even if Detroit was consistently winning just below .500 like 5, 6, 7 or even 8 games, and NOT making the playoffs. We’d still most likely be selling out every week.

I live just north of San Diego

and they’re a bunch of bandwagon LT fans, Seriously the Raider fans outnumber the Charger fans 3-1.

by j16941 on Sep 23, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I got family out there.

My Aunt is always telling me how much better the Padres fans are than Tigers fans, but everytime I watch them on TV the stadium is almost empty. I actually like it there a lot, but I wouldn’t call it a big sports town.

by Mushy on Sep 24, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

San Diego's not a big sports town in the conventional sense

With the great weather and the lifestyle, it’s more of a participation sport/individual sport town, rather than a team sport/spectator sport town. It’s a different culture. Road cycling, beach volleyball (at MB, OB, or La Jolla), sailing in Mission Bay, rollerblading….those are San Diego sports.

Surfing!!

can’t forget surfing. it’s huge out here. i don’t get up early enough to hit the morning break too often, but you would be amazed how many stoners are at the beach at 6 AM. It’s a Blast though! not as hard as I thought it would be…. And Man the RUSH is Sick! YAAA BRO. haha.

by j16941 on Sep 25, 2009 2:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Oops, don't know how I forgot surfing

A lot of surfers at Ocean Beach, just north of Pacific Beach, and in La Jolla Cove. I spent time in PB. Great place, at the north end of the Mission Beach strand. Sand, surf, bars. A lot of kelp in the water (big seaweed with balls attatched), but they clear that regularly. I saw the “Ring of Fire” eclipse from that beach back in 1991. Good times.

Petco Park

Padres fans got screwed when they built the new stadium downtown, ticket prices tripled and now they have to park in the gaslamp district, $30 more bucks and you have to walk a mile plus to get to the game, shitty baseball park too. tons of obstucted views.

by j16941 on Sep 25, 2009 2:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Qualcomm

not the biggest fan of the place, but it worked better for baseball. I got to see the final Tigers v. Padres game there (6yrs ago, or so… don’t stat blast me) and I was at the final game of the 84 series. so it kinda completed the whole Detroit San Diego time wrap tirp thing.

Fairly new franchise...?

The Cardinals? They’ve been around a while. They have a brand new state of the art stadium, and from the people I know in the Phoenix area….they are HARDLY feeling the effects of a down economy.
That being said, you hit the nail on the head…they don’t have a solid fan base like Detroit does….even if our fanbase has become rabid and beligerent.

Good Ol' Stonefoot?

I met that kid once…biggest meathead Jock I’ve ever met in my life. He reminded me of that scene in that terrible movie with Encino Man and Elisabeth Hurley.

“I just gotta Thank God, give it 110%, go out there and do whatever it takes to help my team win, Thank God, work hard, have fun and Thank God”

by Mushy on Sep 24, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I was at that game...

…the guy who gave me the tickets said I was the 5th person he called, no one else wanted them (free). I ended up having to take the girlfriend because nobody I called wanted to go either. We “talked” throughout the game, the noise never got above a low rumble.
I guess that’s what happens when you start 6-2 then proceed to lose 6 straight. What’s really ironic is it was still a win, even though it seemed meaningless at the time, and I can’t imagine how loud that place would be for a “meaningless” win these days.

pistons

I started going to the pistons games instead after the lions left pontiac. Why should I spend money on a team that rarely wins. I still watch on tv though. I would like to go to the new stadium some day though. I moved out to lansing which is a long drive to detroit which doesn’t help. I had season tickets for the pistons on the lower level and this guy sitting next to stopped to lions games because at least the pistons are fun to watch. And the pistons had a bad year for them although they won most of the games I went to.

If I had a million dollars...

…I would ban that song from ever playing on the radio again. After that, I would buy season tickets to every Detroit home game (Tigers, Pistons, Lions, and Redwings). Whether it’s an economic thing or not…I know I feel broke.

blackout

if the management doesn’t feel bad for putting the same sorry product on the field year after year, then i don’t feel bad not spending my hard earned money to watch it.

I definitely agreed...

Let there be darkness

I myself have not been to a Lions game since Barry Sanders because watching them lose on tv is enough humiliation as it is. I much rather spend my time watching other football games or the Tigers in their pennant race than Stafford throw another 2-3 picks and throw out any chance of a comeback. Defensively they’re slowly getting better but they have yet to play a full game or really gel as a unit it seems. 1st half was fun to watch but then as usual the Lions ruined my sunday. Should of went with Culpepper for a year or so and let Stafford come along slowly now hes facing tons of pressure and if he stays the course hes going to suffer the same fate as Joey Harrington did. Just give the team to Illitch, least the teams he owns can make the playoffs and contend for championships on a regular basis.

puttin' cheeks in the seats

I’m afraid this is only the beginning. If they don’t put 4 quality quarters together quickly 10k moves up to 20k! Sad to see it because some of them really try. But this team is like any other Ford product. Looks decent in the showroom but not so hot when it’s go time.

by getalifeyouboobs on Sep 24, 2009 3:03 AM EDT reply actions

I understand...

times are tough and not everyone can afford to attend games, but to say you have the money but wont “support the product” on the field sounds a litle fairweather to me. I try my hardest to make it out to 3-4 games a year and I live outside of the blackout area, but then again, my user name is lions_sucker, so who am I to say anything.

My point is, the team is only going to perform better with fans in the stadium, and if you refuse to go they aren’t going to magically have a moment of clarity and say, you know what, we better win now. If you don’t feel like investing in them now, then go invest in another team like the Patriots who are a solid investment, but don’t come back if the Lions start winning.

Once again, disclaimer, I’m from Muskegon and my user name is lions_sucker, so what the hell do I know.

Until I visited Muskegon for work I had no idea that the West Side even had a ghetto. Why is it that Muskegon shares the same beautiful lake as the rest of that side of the State, but the water smells so freakin bad there?

It was originally more of a commercial port than a tourist town.

Muskegon is a Rust Belt town on the beach. It’s got that industrial decay on it. It’s not bad though….sorta an unpretentious place where you can spend your weekend off the beaten path. A friend’s dad lives there. Sometimes we go his house to hang out all night and play Madden Football, when my friend’s wife is in one of her moods. It’s a good place to lay low. I like Muskegon.

I’m going against my better judgement, but 19-17 Lions. For the 30,000 in attendance it will feel like we just won the Super Bowl.

Just another anecdote…I told my fiance last night that her and I had gone to the last game the Lions won, she replied “Really?”, I said “yup”, to which she shook her head put her hand on my shoulder and said “Oh honey…I’m sorry”. She’s a keeper!
