Lions trade for Ko Simpson
As promised, the Lions continue to shuffle their roster in an attempt to field the best 53 man squad possible. Minutes ago, Milve reported that the Lions have traded a undisclosed draft pick to the Bills for saftey Ko Simpson. I've personally never heard of him before but he is expected to start opposite Delmas. He is 6'1" and just over 200 lb's so he has size. He's a third year player so he has experience but is only 25 so there is room for improvement. Like I said, I've never heard of the guy so he can't be that good but he has been a consistent starter so he can't be that bad either. I just hope we didn't give up a high pick, but I have faith that Mayhew wouldn't do that. Simpson did play all 16 games last yr but was inactive the year before due to injury. He also got arrested for I believe obstruction of justice. Here's a link to that story..... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3806195

I've heard of him
He is pretty good…..started 2 of the last 3 years for the Bills. I think the pick will be performance based. He is going into his fourth year, drafted out of South Carolina in the 4th round (pick 105 in 2006). 2 time all SEC and 2 time All American.
Hes Big
and thats alot of tackles….maybe that is a product of too many players getting to the second level..hopefully its just a product of good tackling and effort.

rankings
When this kid came out of college he was the #5 rated safety, Bullocks was 4, Darnell Bing was 6th, Calvin Lowery was 7th. Food for thought since, we had all of them.
Apparently...
…the guy who runs the Buffalo Bills’ SB Nation site was floored that the Lions would trade for him. Apparently, the guy wasn’t even going to make the team and would’ve been cut soon. We only gave up a late-round pick, but I am not sure why we would do that if he was going to be available.

GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
you gotta trust that the GM thought that he wouldn't be...
Maybe other teams were waiting him out too. Why not give a 6th rounder to ensure you get him?

Indeed I am floored.
Not that y’all didn’t pick up a solid player. Ko’s actually entering his fourth year out of South Carolina. He missed the 2007 season in its entirety with an ankle injury. He doesn’t produce a lot of stats, isn’t terribly athletic, and lost his job last year to Bryan Scott, a guy we picked up off the street.
Still, as far as young guys go, Ko’s pretty dependable. He’ll give up the occasional big play, but he can be pretty tough in run support. If you guys have a pass rush, he might make a play here and there, because he does have some ball skills. It’s not a bad trade. I guess I’m just floored because literally, the chances were extremely slim that he’d make our roster.

well, like i said..that may be the case..
but the lions brass might have gotten wind that he would have more than one suiter in the open market…it happens all the time.

Not only that....
But how long can the Bills hang their hats on a 10 year safety that they “got off the street”? Simpson has value as a player going into his 4th season, and I think it was entirely possible that they would have kept him, barring this trade.
Even if
there were other suiters don’t the Lions have Waiver priority?

Not if they already picked someone up off of waivers. I think once you do, you go the bottom of the pile

on a unrelate note R.hood was allso cut by the bears i know ever one was geting all kool-aid to pick him up so here is are 2nd shot
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
So does this mean
that Shwiegert is going to be cut? Cause I think that he has been damn good this preseason and has made many plays in every game all bee t was in the 4th quarter i every game. Just being a homer here gotta stick up for my Sagnastians and all.
It seems like it
Personally I’d rather keep Schweigert and save the draft pick. If they really want a safety that bad, take a chance on letting Simpson get cut.

+1
Schwiggy is fast and hits like a frieght train. He flew out of nowhere in last nights game to block for Ramzee on his int return. I hope he makes the roster.
Folks, a 6th round pick...if thats what it is...is a miss about 90% of the time..
and we would have likley missed. this is a guy that atleast has stuck in the NFL

I will be
upset if we get rid of Shweigert. I think he has looked very solid in run support and god is he fast. I would love to see him start and us get rid of Kalvin Pearson.
I guess the question becomes
would he have had to clear waivers, or would he, being a fourth year player, be a free to sign with anyone? Can someone privy to that info enlighten us?
once he clears waivers he could go anywhere
he becomes a fa. to the points above…the waiver wire gives priority of first claim to the worst teams from the previous year. but once they’ve made their first claim, they go to the bottom of the list. honestly, i think there are bigger fish to catch with the first waiver wire claim…but they wanted simpson…so rather than using the first waiver claim on him, they got their hands on him in advance. likely wouldn’t be there for a 32nd position waiver claim…and risky waiting for fa availability
