Lions Make Final Cuts, Establish 53-Man Roster

Photo

The Lions have officially submitted and released their 53-man roster.  I think most of these come as no surprise (especially with the leaks all day long), but here is the list of the 22 players that did not make the final roster:

LB Rufus Alexander, QB Brooks Bollinger, G Milford Brown, TE Carson Butler, RB Aveion Cason, WR Keary Colbert, DE Sean Conover, K Billy Cundiff, DT Chuck Darby, RB Tristan Davis, LB Zack Follett, C Dan Gerberry, TE Dan Gronkowski, WR Dane Looker, DB Calvin Lowry, T Lydon Murtha, DB Ramzee Robinson, DB Stuart Schweigert, DT Shaun Smith, LB Spenser Smith, WR John Standeford.

Also placed CB Chris Roberson on the Reserve/Injured

Look for this roster to change frequently as the Lions will surely be scouring the waiver wire.  By the sounds of it, Mayhew and Schwartz already have a "hitlist" of potentially waived players that they will be going after, so get ready to see a flurry of activity over the next few days.  I'm sure Sean will keep us up-to-date as these signings unfold.

Yeah, that's probably as close to a shocker as there was...

but he didn’t play all that well IMO. I was really hoping (out of all of these cuts) that Looker would make it through. If neither Williams nor Northcutt made an impact, he could have been a good #3 guy.

by DrewsLions on Sep 5, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

They are really hanging their hats on Northcutt

And I think that could prove to be a mistake too…..

It's hard to say..

We haven’t seen Northcutt in action yet, but I think he’ll be fine, he’s experienced and reliable.

that they kept most of the linebackers sept for follet really. Even though i like him, Dizon and Levy stepped it up to stay

What is Darnell Bing going to do besides be inactive all year…..

Precisely

So now turn your own argument around and make it for Follet because Bing will never see the field unless it is on special teams….and Follet is a superior player in that aspect. He could have developed into something above and beyond Darnell Bing too…..Bing has done nothing here.

This was back in August
The precise posture is that the suspension has been imposed, and that Jackson has exercised his appeal rights. Once Commissioner Roger Goodell issues a ruling, the suspension will become effective.

Terrence Taylor...

has been released from the Colts, we should definitely look into picking him up. They are stacked at DT, so it’s hopefully not a issue with Taylor, would be awesome if he pans out.

He would be a great pickup

I recall alot of guys saying it was between Terrance Taylor and Sammie Lee Hill for that 5th rd selection.

by detpistons3 on Sep 5, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's a Theory...

The reason the Lions waived guys like Looker when they could’ve waived Jennings, or Scheigert when they could’ve waived Manuel is they’ve been scouring the waiver wire and already found guys better than both of the guys mentioned previously. So, rather than keeping the better of the two and then hanging him out to dry when they pick up another guy off waivers, they waive them now so they have a better chance to find a team. This is a classier move and will put us a step in the direction of a good organization, a team that players want to play for. So sure we can waive Jennings and keep Looker, but then when we find an even better WR than Looker, he’s left scouring for a team of which most have already filled their WR needs. It seems like Schwartz and Mayhew want to build a classy organization that other organizations model (similar to the Patriots) and this just seems like the right thing to do. This also makes decisions on waived players alot easier, rather than tearing their eyes out about who is half a hair better than the other, they can make an easy decision on who to keep and who to cut.

Who knows maybe I’m reading too much into things, but this makes alot of sense to me

We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne

I agree with you nice observation

That is why alot of question marks go up around the first cut. Teams have a big picture in mind and we can’t see behind the scenes so we are just making speculations, but I agree with this totally.

If you had to pick a name or 2.....

Who would you guess we will make a claim on? There’s a lot of intriguing “kick the tires” guys out there, but who would we be most likely to actually claim?

I’d guess Marcus McCauley and Terrance Taylor. Both seem to fit what Gunther’s trying to do. Taylor’s a 6-0, 319 run-stuffing DT, rookie 4th-rounder. McCauley’s a big CB, 6-1, 203, runs a 4.40 40 (per Scout.com), and is similar in size to 2 of our other 3 backup CB’s, Cletis Gordon and William James, who also are both are at least 6-0, 200. Gunther seems to like big CB’s with safety size for his nickel/dime backs, especially if they’re willing to tackle, which McCauley apparently is. Not sure where Eric King fits into all this…..primary backup CB/cover guy? He hasn’t done much so far, even when he was healthy. Is he a guy we can easily cut?

I agree with Niyo…….they seem to have given themselves cap flexibility on subsequent cuts.

I had a thought buzzing in the back of my head all preseason....

Both Aveion Cason and Keary Colbert got lots of playing time during the preseason. Maybe there was a reason for that? Cason had been here on-and-off for years, and Colbert did a little bit late last year. Then a new coach arrives, and Cason and Colbert pratice and play poorly (not that they ever were that great to begin with). Often, it’s the bubble guys that get a good long look, so the coach can be sure he’s doing the right thing in cutting them, especially if they had been useful in some way in the past. I’ve been wondering if Schwartz had been thinking of cutting Cason and Colbert all along, and wanted to make sure that was the right thing to do. He certainly gave them enough chances to prove they deserved a spot,…..and they didn’t improve. So they were cut with no regrets.

by GRLion on Sep 6, 2009 4:14 AM EDT reply actions

The thought crossed my mind as well.

Both were given ample chances to earn a spot on the roster.( too many IMO.) Cason has never been more than average. I think that became obvious when Brown and Davis came on the scene and made him look slow and average. Sure hope they get Davis on the practice squad.
Colbert wrote his own ticket out of town. Stafford threw many passes his way dispite the fact that he couldn’t catch a cold in 5 × 5 cell filled with bacteria. I am no WR expert, but he seem to be able to get open warrenting the throws to come his way. But if you can’t catch, no spot for you. Good day sir.
Can’t say I am sorry to see either of them gone, IMO.

by Lead Hunter on Sep 6, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

if i recall, schwartz did say

that the roster after cuts will likely not be the complete roster by start of the first game. so here’s hoping that there are a few changes yet. I think the following are still quite expendable:

Ikaika Alama-Francis
Orien Harris

Hoping we look at:
Terrence Taylor
Tony Pashos
Mark Tauscher
Brian Russell
Anthony Madison
Alphonso Boone
Levi Jones (i can hear the complaints already…but with a line that performed well in preseason, great on the run so far, what is there to loose to have a long look)

Players I would like the Lions to take a look at..

Ryan Fowler LB Tenn. 6-3, 243lbs
Marcus Freeman LB Chi 6-1, 240lbs
Curtis Gatewood LB Phi 6-3 240lbs

In addition to londonlions list. I think that any one of these guys would be good depth at the linebacker position. Folwer is 27. Played the last two years at Tennessee. Was a starter in 2007. Knows what Schwartz wants from his LB’s. Freeman is a rookie from Ohio State. Just got lost in all the LB’s that are in Chicago. And the same with Gatewood. A 24 year old. With good size and speed. Just needs time to learn. But again, he was on a team that has good LB’s. Philadelphia.

I could add Donovan Raiola to the list. He got cut by the Bears. But, I am sure Dom is already making some phone calls. On his behalf.

if the lions make any move at lb

i would hope it is to follett. don’t know much about the ones you have listed…but i really like folletts contributions in his limited time

RICHARD SEYMOUR TRADED TO RAIDERS FOR 2011 1ST RD PICK

wow…and they signed kendall simmons OG…

knowing the pats & their system , they probably see a lot of depth coming at dt over the next two years…i know there is some skill this year…perhaps draft the dt this spring & start replacing some of the other aging players

ron brace must be impressing

may be the other more relevant reason

awesome

i wonder if they looked at madison? i feel pretty good about the db’s now

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/category/rumor-mill/

well…ok anyway, no superstar shut down out there but solid players & depth i think

by londonlion on Sep 6, 2009 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

right

we need all the help we can get im sure will pick up some more 2

by sandvet on Sep 6, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't know

i think madison is the only other one i would look at…looking at the roster…i feel that there are only 4-5 players that are not as good as what is out on the wire

by londonlion on Sep 6, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I really like what Schwartz is doing, if he can make the 53rd man on the roster a little better, he’ll do it. That’s a good way to go about things.

If we keep this up

when we get hit with injury bugs it won’t hurt as much. Maybe if we had a better 2nd stringer than Dan-O last year, we might’ve actually won a game.

how 'bout any qb that could stay healthy

i didn’t matter who was throwing cj the ball…they kid put up 1300 & 12 tds…imagine what a little consistancy on the spiral will bring!!

by londonlion on Sep 6, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

absolutely

the minute you start to think you can’ t get better, either via the fa market, waiver wire, practice, situationally, etc…is the minute you need to step away from the game. really almost admire the way scwartz/mayhew & co have gone about things in the last 8-10 months

What an idiot

Plays through a serious injury at the end of last season, just to beat up his wife (girlfriend?) and throw it all away this year? Man, people just keep getting dumber as the years go by.

makes me happy

anyone else think...

news regarding lions transactions should be in a new fanpost or is that a waste of space. This post is getting full.
