How did Shaun Smith not make the team?
After a lot of hub-bub, Shaun Smith got cut?? I can't remember who said, but Smith was talked about as maybe the best pick up for the Lions in the offseason. He is big and talented. The knock on him was attitude. I have trouble believing that he couldn't beat out Sammie Hill or Landon Cohen or Fluellen. These guys are just not getting it done, not to mention small.
Let's hope the waiver wire still has something to offer.
I had high hopes for this guy, and I hope that attitude alone didn't make this happen. This begs the question.....what means more attitude or talent? Both are nice, but if you have to pick one or the other. Keep in mind Marinelli went all attitude....all the way to 0-16!!

Potential vs Peaked
When you’ve got a bad team, don’t keep around a player who’s reached his peak when you have younger players with higher ceilings. Simple as that.
Which of those players you mentioned...
that beat out Smith, is too small? Everyone of them is over 300lbs. I personally I thought that all three of those players( Cohen, Hill, and Fluellen) were better than Smith.
Lets face it. Cleveland did not want Smith either. And nobody else has put a claim on him yet.
my thoughts exactly...
Smith did nothing to prove that his experience made him better than our young DT’s.

Hey l_s, I get your crack at Norman Chad in the other thread.
Just think about that, the Lions cut their Mr. Irreplaceable and nobody else wants him.
Chad should win an award for the single stupidest statement of the 2009 NFL season for that one. And the season hasn’t even started yet!
hey davis it has been a couple days..
I think he would have made the team if he would have punched any one of the Vikings quarterbacks
or broken Joe Paterno's other leg.
NOTE: I have nothing against Joe Paterno. In the past I have greatly enjoyed watching his teams lose to Michigan. Last year, not so much.
Being a MSU fan..
I greatly enjoyed watching PSU beat Michigan. Not that there is any in state rivalry or anything like that. : )
According to Schwartz
Believe it or not Shaun Smith was a “model citizen” while playing for Detroit during the preseason. He was eventually released because Schwartz feels that our younger players (Cohen and Hill) have more potential and bigger upsides than Shaun Smith.
Didn't he go and yell at the Brown's GM on the field before the game his first week here?
I thought I read that somewhere.
I don't think Smith was any better than the others
Schwartz may feel he can coach these guys to be great and reach their potential. They are letting Stafford start and learn on the fly, why not the other guys.
The argument would make more sense...
…if we were talking about his buddy Shaun Rogers. Smith has the tools (size, strength, athleticism), but I was extremely underwhelmed with what he was doing on the field. Rogers, on the other hand, is all talent with reportedly one of the worst attitudes around. The guy is just lazy.
I didn’t vote in the poll, because I found it confusing. Shouldn’t it read “talent, because without talent you can not win” – or – “attitude, because attitude can split a team”? Anyway, I think it depends:
1) Losing team, young players, new coaches: Attitude is just as important as talent! You can’t have a split locker room while the coaches are trying to implement their system.
2) Winning team, veteran players, proven coaches: Talent will fall in line with the right attitude. Once a coach has proven himself, it is simple to say “it’s my way or the highway”. Besides, with veteran players, most won’t put up with a problem in the locker room unless they can see the advantages to it.
Oh...
…and Maranellit went 0-16 because he was an idiot that didn’t understand talent was just as important as attitude. He honestly thought you could simply “coach up” anybody who was willing to try their best. Having the right attitude is critical to a young team, as I posted above, but skill is a must as well. I love the Lions, and if asked I would work my ass off to win a roster spot, but after all the “coaching” I still wouldn’t be likely able to tackle Nick Harris, let alone Adrian Peterson. Coach Magoo was a knucklehead!
