Friday Notes: Happy New Year!
- I just want to quickly wish everybody a happy New Year! I thought about putting a post together about the New Year and just how awful the last decade was, but I figured there was no point to relive all of the painful memories. Instead let's just hope that this new decade is the start of the turnaround of this franchise. Also, let's just pretend the decade of he who shall not be named never even happened.
- Jim Schwartz hasn't publicly named a starter for Sunday's game against the Bears (and it doesn't seem as though he will announce anything), but it looks like Daunte Culpepper will get the nod over Drew Stanton.
- Larry Foote has already been ruled out for Sunday's game, meaning DeAndre Levy will be the starter at middle linebacker for the second straight week.
- Julian Peterson was named an alternate for the Pro Bowl. No disrespect to Peterson, but I think this was a case of what he's done in the past getting him voted as an alternate, because he certainly did not seem like a Pro Bowl-caliber player based on his play this year.
- Gunther Cunningham believes that Louis Delmas should be the defensive rookie of the year.
"They probably won't even consider him because of our record and situation," Cunningham said Wednesday. "But I've been coaching for a long time ... and if I do say something like that, I'm not trying to politic for the guy. I'm telling you the truth. This is what I see."
Delmas certainly deserves some form of recognition for all he's done this season.
"I see something really special in that kid," Cunningham said. "To me, it's not always just about statistics. ... I defy you to find a guy that's done more for an organization than Louis Delmas." - If the 2010 offseason is uncapped, seven Lions players would be restricted free agents instead of unrestricted.
- Drew Stanton talked about his first career start on his blog.

And before someone tries to correct me
Yes, I realize the next decade doesn’t technically start until 2011, but since any 10 years can be considered a decade, I simply consider 2001-09 a decade. 2010-19 is the next decade based on that, and then 2020-2029 and so on. I prefer to consider decades this way, as it’d just be odd to consider 2020 as not part of the 20s, for example.

Can I correct your own correction just to be a smartass? LOL
I think you meant 2000-2009, not 2001-2009.
I'd definitely love him to be
And he should be in the reckoning, but Cushing, Matthews, Orakpo and Byrd are all strong contenders.

Also doesn't help to be on a 2-14 team
That’s gonna lead the league in PA for Year #3 in a row, and boasts the worst secondary ever.
PIZZA?!?
I agree with you on Peterson, Sean
He’s had nowhere near a Pro Bowl year. He was basically non-existent for the first few games of the season. This is based on reputation and reputation alone. He’s had a few nice games, but did not have a Pro Bowl alternate year.
Happy New Year POD!!
No disrespect but Delmas as ROY?? I don’t think he did enough to warrant that honor but I do think he did enough on the field for HIM to be our Pro Bowl alternate, not JP. It certainly seems to me that this is a case of a familiar name getting the nod.

I love the Pro-Bowl as a concept
But to me it seems a little stupid in how they do it. I know there isn’t a fool-proof solution to these things but it seems to me that players who don’t deserve honours that particular year get them based on how well they are known. Especially in positions such as the OL and FB. People don’t really pay attention to those positions that closely so that vote someone they know.
I know peers and the media do the voting as well, but sometimes you gotta wonder.

You're spot on here, HE
The Pro Bowl voting process is an absolute joke. There should be a committee basing it on solid stats, film study, how valuable the player is to their team, etc. The current system is just ridiculous.
Agreed Drew
The 1/3 fan vote is nothing short of a popularity contest. I understand the NFL’s dilemma with wanting to get the fans involved but it hurts the integrity of the Pro Bowl IMO

Happy New Year, Folks!
here’s to hoping the next one is better than the last 10 (40) for the Lions.
