Questions for you guys
I would like to ask for some thoughts on some things, cause at this point a lot of you know a lot more about some of the players coming out than i do. So please if could shed some light, it would be great
2. Demaryius Thomas, Jonathon Dwyer's teammate, 6'3'' 229 WR, i think he would look good opposite CJ, i still don't know a lot about him but i have heard good things and basically i like his size here, not just his his height but his body size. Does he have good enough Speed though? How bout Playmaking Abilities? Do you think he lasts until the 3rd round?
3. Do we really want a Guard at 34 overall? i mean yeah we could defintely use an upgrade, but Guard is argueably the least skilled posistion on the field, i say we stay away from a Gaurd until later rounds, how about you?
4.Do you really believe Ndamakong Suh is going No 1 to the Rams? i don't. Look they need to help out Stephen Jackson and keep him happy, what better way to do this than to draft a young QB? I still say Clausen and Tate go to St Louis. But hey thats my thoughts tell me yours.
5. If Suh is gone at 2 than who do you think we should take? Eric Berry? Gerald McCoy? Russell Okung? CJ Spiller? Other? what are your thoughts?
6. and finally do you guys see any guys later on we should draft? Rounds 4-7? if so throw them out.
Alright thanks for reading these questions and i hope to see your responses. Thanks

no, no, maybe, Berry for sure dont over think it, and yes
In rounds 4-7 you can get starting guards, defensive line possible starters and depth, special teams guys, and a dimond in the rough. Trust in Schwartz and Mayhew, they wont let us down.
agree
IN schwartz we trust ( That kool-aid taste familiar mooch familiar) but thats what your looking at

Agree.....no (there are good ones later too), no (watch the Combine), only if it's Iupati, Rams get Clausen (and maybe Tate too!), Berry for sure (don't overthink it), and yes
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
2 cents
1) No, I like him but RB’s have to be special to be top 50 picks. I don’t see that with him, RD 3 fine.
2) Hard to say because of the triple option. But I would prefer a different receiver that is a known for running solid routes or blazing speed, either of those traits can help Calvin. (I would love to see Eric Decker as a Lion)
3) NO NO NO! There is not a guard I would take in the top 50 unless Iupati is dominating in the Senior Bowl and combine. You can get that position in round 4 and 5 as long as the scouts find what they need. (Mike Johnson – ALA)
4) Probably Clausen
5) Berry if we are assuming BPA.
6) After last year, I trust Mayhew late as well.
then pass on Suh at #2?
if Clausen goes #1 (which i don’t think is the case), you think we should pass on Suh at #2 to take Berry?
He is asking
what we think the pick is if Suh is gone. Berry would be the best available if that is the strategy.

right,
you are answering the questions independently—okay i get it.
too early to say—i’d say it will probably be Berry or McCoy unless we can move down (doubt it).
I don't know Russ, we need a big upgrade at Guard.
I hear what you are saying, pick #34 is almost a first round pick and you must get good value for it, but I would not wait until the fourth or fifth round. Mike Johnson or Jon Asamoah will likely be available when we pick at #66.
I looked at the 2009 Draft and found ten Guards picked in the entire draft. I do know that the Bills chose Eric Wood, a Center, in Round One and Andy Levitre, a Tackle, in Round Two to play at Guard. There may be more converted players that I don’t know of.
Breakdown of the ten Guards: Two third rounders, three fourth, one sixth, and four seventh rounders.
I would say that supports your view of the value of Guards, Russ.

Dwyer is cool....
But looking at the youtube footage of Gerhart makes me like him more. Not as fast as Dwyer or Spiller, but he’s a bruiser! Like a white version of Marion Barber!
Not sure if he will be able to bulldoze as many guys in the pros though, but i would say take a chance on him.
I think Dwyer....
…..will be the beanie Wells of this draft

this feels like an interview (tough questions)
1. If you are asking if hes worth the Lions 2nd round pick, then my answer is HELL NO. Overall, i think he is a late 2nd to mid 3rd round kinda guy
2. Ya, he has size, so does Bryant Johnson (in fact they are about the similar in size)…its not really about size with wideouts…more route running and catching. look at guys like welker, and steve smith in carolina…not big, but just as effective if not more effective than guys with size.
3. Yes, I want a guard @ 34…its about getting the BPA and if Iupati is avialable at 34, then he is the BPA, so we should take him.
4. I dont think so either…I think they are gonna get Claussen. We will find out more as the draft approaches ,and the draft combine is done.
5. Hard to say… IMO..none of them are worth the pick, but if I had to take a guy, then it would be Gerald McCoy.
6. Kyle McCarthy (Notre Dame), Walter McFadden (auburn), Austin Lane (Murray State)
The beginning of the end of the misery
Not so fast on Clausen going #1...
Question 4 assumes the Rams are thinking like the Raiders. If St. Louis really wants to improve and field a solid team they will take Suh, and use DEF and a solid run game to become a strong team and move forward. The NFC West is nothing special. If the Rams are smart they will take Suh, which is sad because I really want him in a Lions uniform. The Rams could be next year’s Jets.
they only averaged just over 10 pts a game...
unless they can keep the other team from scoring more than a TD. They aren’t gonna do anything but have one of the top two spots in the 2011 draft.

Their offence is a catastrophe and getting worse.
16.4, 14.5, and 10.9 points per game the last three years. In 2009, Steven Jackson started fifteen games and rushed for +1400 yards. The two previous years he started twelve and eleven games. If he goes down for an extended period of time they have no offensive weapons at all.
Unless they get really aggressive in the free agent market or make a big trade, very risky strategies in my mind, they have to do something on the offensive side in the draft.
Yes lineman and RB deffiantly can be a late round priority.
we had a simalar philospophy is last years draft, i sincerely hope that the lions take a offensive lineman before the sixth round this year.

If Iupati or whoever is BPA
I think we may have a guard at #34. Top-notch Guards are very valuable.
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

I have my opinions
which are draft nothing but OL, DE, DT and CB this draft and forget the WR, RB for one year and build the team’s insides. I would also wait one more year for a PK. Of course all this is dependent on what we do in FA but Mayhew clearly wants to build through the draft so we may not be nearly as active in the FA market as we were last year, despite the obvious holes on the team.

Hey, why is the rest of the room painted while I'm standing in this corner? (facepalm)

It might also be dependent on who is on the board when we pick. I would not pass up a great player at a position where he could be a huge upgrade to take a much lesser player, just because I arbitrarily locked myself into drafting ONLY OL, DE, DT, and CB. That’s reckless. You don’t want to paint yourself into a corner.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
Stop it GR
You’ve seen enough Lions games this year to know what the problems are. I haven’t after one game said to myself “Well, if we had a good RB we would have won that game” or “Well if we only had a better WR we would have won that game”.
We have 7 picks. Our needs are secondary, OL and Defensive line. There are enough holes on just those fronts alone for 7 picks AGAIN depending on what we do in FA

My answers
1) Jonathon Dwyer is ranked in the top 30 of all prospects currently, by Scout Inc. Whether that changes or not over the next 3 months is yet to be seen. On a preliminary basis, I would say that he would in fact be worthy of a high 2nd round pick, even pick 34. He is 5’11" and 234 pounds, plus he runs the 40 between 4.4 and 4.48. That is pretty fast for a back his size, and he has shown that he can break tackles. I would not be upset if we drafted him, but ONLY if he is the BPA at pick 34, and no sooner. If Mike Iupati is available at pick 34, I think he would be a much better choice.
2) Demaryius Thomas is ranked as high as 37th, in the top 100 rated prospects, by some scouting “experts”. He has a large frame, he is adequately tall, and he has developed into a solid blocker at 229 pounds. The main concern with Thomas is the lack of elite speed, as he only runs a 4.6 40. However, he is the best WR that GT has had since CJ, and his numbers are not indicative of his ability (Geargia Tech is now a more run oriented football team). He could be a good #2 WR in the mold of a faster version of Anquan Boldin. Does he have enough speed? Yes, if he can learn technique that will allow him to get off the line in press coverage. Playmaking abilities? Yes, but again he needs to work on technique. Does he last until round 3? He has good hands and he is not afraid to go over the middle……but I do not see him lasting into the 3rd round.
3) IF and ONLY IF Mike Iupati is available at pick 34, I say we have to take him there. If he goes in round 1 (which is more and more likely), I think we can get starting guards in the later rounds (rounds 4-6 for sure).
4) I agree that it is unlikely that the Rams will pass on a QB at pick 1. They have a need for a long term solution at the position (AKA “franchise” QB), and even though Suh and Berry may be rated ahead of him in terms of prospects, I think the Rams will draft Jimmy Clausen #1. Clausen is the most NFL ready QB in the draft, and he could come in and immediately relax some of the pressure on Steven Jackson, which will allow the Rams to come one step closer to being the power running team that they want to be. I do not see Golden Tate slipping to round 2 however, but I do think the Rams will be looking at a lot of offensive players in the coming draft. They have to keep SJAX happy, or else lose their strongest building block. I think that Suh will be tempting for St. Louis, as Aaron Curry was for the Lions, however I see the Rams following in our footsteps by drafting a QB with the #1 pick.
5) If Ndamukong Suh happens to be the Ram’s first pick, I think it is a no brainer that the Lions will draft Eric Berry. Many scouting “experts”, including Scout Inc, have Berry ranked as the #1 draft prospect currently (even higher than Suh). I believe he will be the consensus BPA at pick 2, if Suh is gone, and I do not see the Lions reaching for an over rated DT just because the pass rush is one of our most glaring needs. Schwartz and CO have already stated that they feel Backus and Raiola are pro bowl quality players, so it is very unlikely that we would take Okung or any other OT with pick 2. I do not believe RB is such a great need that we would reach for Spiller here either. Eric Berry makes the most sense, following the BPA regardless of positional need strategy, and his addition will give us at least half of a secondary to be feared and revered by all. I have taken a bit of a 180 on this position, as I previously felt that Berry was over rated (just like Gerald McCoy), but I have watched some film, and I have seen the stats, and the kid looks like the real deal.
6) It is hard to say who might or might not be left over in rounds 4-7, and even harder to say who we should be looking to draft there (since we do not know who we will draft in rounds 1-3). However, if fortune smiled upon the Lions for once in my life, and we were to get Suh (DT), Iupati (G), and say Trevard Lindley (CB) or Javier Arenas (CB…if he were to fall to us in the third), then maybe we could target Brandon Graham (DE) in the 4th.
Our two fifth round picks depend largely, in my opinion, on what happens at pick 34. Say we go with Dwyer or Javid Best at pick 34 for insurance at RB (if Iupati is gone). Then I would look for us to target Jon Jerry (G) and maybe Antonio “Crazy Eyes” Brown (WR) in the 5th (awesome KR and explosive WR out of CMU). We might even target these guys here regardless if we get Iupati or not (it couldn’t hurt to get 2 good guards in this draft). In round 6, we might look at a safety like Barry Church, and in round 7 maybe we target a Greg Middleton (DE), Blair White (WR), Bryan Anderson (WR), Dan Doering (G), or even a developmental OT like the other Joe Thomas (6’5" 300lbs) out of Pittsburgh here. Mainly, it will depend on who the BPA is at all of our picks, who falls and who gets picked early, as to how it will all shake out.
I still don't like a Guard in the 2nd
Not as Athletic as a Tackle not as Important as a Center, Every other position on Offense requires more skill and with all our holes i just think its unwise to take a Guard so high.
I like Dwyer and thats who i want at 34, lets see what happens at the combine but i think he is going to be a good back
Thomas, i have read a few different places that he is probably going in the late 2nd early 3rd, but i personally believe that he could jump up a ton in this WR class with a good Combine showing, again if he is there in the 3rd round i think it would be a nice pick
My reasoning is that the coaching staff and FO.....
seem to think that Backus is a pro bowl caliber LT…..so that must mean he is not getting there, and he is allowing 8 sacks, because we have a revolving door at LG. I feel that we desperately need help on the o-line, and I feel that Iupati will be the BPA if he is there at pick 34 (he is already moving up the draft boards, and he may go in round 1, whereas Dwyer is almost guaranteed to be a 2nd rounder). Remember…..BPA regardless of positional need. It just so happens that if Iupati is there at 34, not only will he be the BPA regardless of positional need, but he will be the BPA based on a glaring positional need on our offensive line. As much as it would please me to see a bruising back in Detroit to compliment what we have, it would mean that either Morris or Aaron Brown would be released, and it would mean that we would have to reach for that player if a better option were available. I just do not see it happening if Iupati is there at pick 34….however, I am not psychic.
Is it really Best Player Available?
What does an Offensive Guard do? he is really more important in the run game, correct? While we need help in that area in a big way, the guys main job is to push the guy across from him and not get a penalty. Is that really a skill? Best Player available means just that and how can you tell me that an Guard is a better player than a CB who has to be fast enough and athletic and have an incredible awareness to shut down WRs, or a WR who needs to make a catch in traffic with guys gunning down on him, or a RB who has to make lightning fast reads in order to break that big run, or even a S or LB who is out there trying to make reads and come up and make a play on the ball, DTs who have to fight the other teams line and then breakthrough just to disrupt the play, DEs who need a rare combination of size and speed in order to be even good at this level, even OTs who need to take on the opposing teams top two pass rushers, or a C who commands that offensive line and snaps the ball to the QB. Best Player Available? im sorry i can’t say a Guard ever is, that is drafting for a need, just like drafting a K or P is. Its a Guy who Pushes another guy, he doesn’t need to be as good as a OT he just needs to be good. So i ask you please, why, why, why, do we need to take a guard at 34 overall? he is not the best “Player” on the board, he will be the best Player at his position on the board but no the best player. Can he Catch? Can he Run the ball? Can he Tackle? Please tell me how an Offensive Guard is a better choice than a RB or a WR or a CB or a S or a LB or a DT or a DE, heck please tell me why we should not draft a backup QB instead of a G please please please
That being said
If the Staff feels this guy can develop into a future OT then yes do draft him, i just dont see that happening.
An offensive guard does more than run block
The guard’s job is to protect quarterback from the defensive line and linebackers on passing plays (they are especially responsible for blitz protection), as well as run blocking and making holes for the running backs. They are expected to be able to perform special blocking assignments, such as pulling and speed blocking. The guard is just as responsible for pass blocking as the OT, and even moreso for picking up inside blitzes.
If the quarterback has called a pass play, where he will try to throw the ball over a mess of very large guys who are all wrestling and hit a speedy receiver in full flight, then the job of the guards is to be large impenetrable walls and absorb any punishment the defensive guys care to put out. The guards are to form a wall with the center that the quarterback can stand behind, unmolested, while the quarterback tries to get the ball to the right person. If the football team spends most of their time passing the ball, the guards will tend to be very big guys, weighing perhaps as much as 325 to 330 pounds. These very heavy guys can’t move as fast as somewhat smaller guys, but they can absorb a lot of punishment.
If the quarterback has called a running play, where one of the players will try to run with the football, the guards have their second job. In this case their job is to bull rush whoever is ahead of them and create a hole in the defense for the runner. The guards which are best at bullying a hole in the defense are just a bit smaller, perhaps 300 to 310 pounds, and a bit faster and more athletic. It’s a very different job to run forwards a few steps while pushing a 320 pound defender than to stand more or less in one place and take whatever the 320 pound defender dishes out without moving or flinching.
http://football.calsci.com/Positions2.html
How can I tell you that Mike Iupati will be the consensus BPA at pick 34 (if he is there), over a RB, a CB, S, LB, DT, DE, or OT? Simple…..because these guys are scouted, ranked, and categorized based on their skillsets, ability to perform the requirements of their specific positions, and how well they use those things in real game situations. Guards are very athletic, they are just athletic in a different manner than the other skilled positions. Not only that, but Iupati is already projected to go in the mid to late first round, while Dwyer (the guy you want) is projected in the late 1st to early 2nd round…..meaning Iupati is ranked ABOVE Dwyer, and meaning that Iupati does what a guard does better than Dwyer does what a running back does.
Do you mean to tell me that we do not need Guards? Do you mean to say that they are not just as important as every other positional player on the team? Sorry, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Without good guards, you get what we had all year long…..no running game and injured QBs and RBs. I agree that we can get good guards in later rounds, but if we have a chance to draft the best guard in the draft, and he is considered the best player available by our scouts, the national scouts, the coaches, and the front office, then we will draft him. If Iupati is there at pick 34….I would be shocked if we passed on him, and I’ll leave it at that.
No i think we need Guards
who were the 2 Guards taken last year in the 1st round Alex Mack and Eric Wood? both of whom could play Center, look i know nothing about Mike Iupati, but i look at the Guards drafted last year and it was the Bills and Browns that took these guys, and yeah they made impacts but could another player have made a bigger impact at a different position? I don’t know. Look there are so many good Guards in the NFL that were taken in later rounds or even undrafted, im saying i think we can find one later on, and don’t need to take one in the 2nd Rd when you could get a Starter at WR,RB,DE,DT,S,CB maybe even OT thats all im saying. Also what about moving Gosder over to LG could this work? or maybe we sign a FA at that spot? I don’t know what will happen.
Anything could happen.....
My point is that we can’t follow trends of the past if we want to draft the best player available, and that player happens to be a guard. It is not about what we need or what we want…..it is about who the best player available is, regardless of positional need (within reason). Anyway, if Iupati were to somehow fall to us at pick 34, I am willing to bet that he will be very highly considered, if he is not the BPA.
ok one thing
Jordan Dizon was Drafted above Ray Rice and Chris Johnson i believe, somebody please tell me why? Specially since with our next pick we took Kevin Smith? all i can say is wow
That is because Millen was still the GM when Dizon was drafted......
and the Lions were not following the BPA (regardless of position) drafting strategy. Mayhew and Schwartz would not have made that pick, unless they felt that Dizon was the best player available.
Assuming Suh is available
Here is what our draft should look like:
1.) Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
2.) DeMaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
3.) Myron Lewis, CB, Vanderbilt
4.) Alterraun Verner, CB, UCLA
5.) Brandon Carter, OG, Texas Tech
6.) Eric Olsen, C, Notre Dame
