We got a chance

So far so good?  It's a 50/50 possiblility obviously...  Rams management may go QB?!!!!...  the staff at Rams are saying taking a DT first may be too much and too high??!!... Of course they could be "playing the market" for trade bait?  Who knows.. but it is getting exciting and it's only January!

I know we (Lions fans) will be holding our collective breath 15 minutes after the start of the draft in PRIMETIME.  I CAN'T WAIT!

I can hear it now...  Welcome to NYC and the 2010 NFL DRAFT!...  Here we go..... With the first pick of the 2010 NFL DRAFT the St. Louis Rams.. select..............................????????????

If they go Suh.....

I dont even think it is a question

that they will take a QB. Look at their QB situation last year, they were starting Keith Null. Bulger was hurt, but there have been rumors that he is going to retire at the end of this year. They have absolutely nobody. The NFL is a QB driven league, they will take Clausen.

IMO

No way we get Suh. Either the Rams take him because there isn’t a QB worthy of the #1 pick, or another team with a top 10 pick trades with St. Louis to take Suh, and the Rams take a QB with their new pick. But in my opinion, there’s no way we’re getting him. Hope I’m wrong.

+1 Giggy

He’s too dominant not to take #1. I really hope I’m wrong but I don’t see it.

would you rather have Stafford or Curry?

Curry is to dominant a player not to take at No 1. But QB is the leader of the team. Also to much money for a LB. Clausen goes to St Louis, its impossible to trade that pick because of the price tag, no way St Louis pays that much for a DT when they can still get a good one in the 2nd round, Stephen Jackson needs help on the Offensive side of the ball. Look all things point to Clausen, dont give me the Dominant player arguement, please

OK everyone is wrong about this guy then

Suh is the most dominant DT to come out since Warren Sapp like everyone says. Listen I really hope I am wrong and the Rams take Clausen or someone else at #2 I would be estatic. I just don’t see it happening.

It's not that they are wrong NYC

It is that they are misguided to think that a team with the #1 pick, who needs a QB in a draft where there is only really one QB who is NFL ready, will pass on the opportunity to take that player, just because there is a standout defensive tackle available. If teams did those kind of things, the Lions would have passed on Stafford and taken Curry or Jason Smith #1 last year. The reason they did not, is because they knew they could not pass on Stafford and still get Sanchez, and that would leave Josh Freeman (if we could move back up in round 1) or Pat White (pick 12 of round 2 last year) as our best options. I’m sure you have seen the bust rate for QBs beyond round 1……

Kyle Orton, Jason Campbell, Chad Pennington, Tavaris Jackson, Kellen Clemens, Charlie Batch, Kyle Boller, David Carr, Brodie Croyle, Daunte Culpepper, Rex Grossman, Joey Harrington, Jon Kitna, Matt Moore, Chris Redman, Brett Ratliff, and Troy Smith are the 2010 UFAs that will be available for the Rams to choose from. You think that any one of those guys is a long term solution? True, some of these guys might be better than Clausen for a year or two, but none of them are long term solutions and just like we all said once we had Stafford, the best way for him to develop is to play and start. I think the Rams will look to draft their future franchise QB with the first pick, and Jimmy Clausen is the best QB available (and the most NFL ready).

The potential first round QBs in the upcoming draft are:
1) Jimmy Clausen (pro style offense)
2) Sam Bradford (pro style offense, even though they run a lot of shotgun plays)
3) Colt McCoy (spread passing offense)
4) Tim Tebow (spread option offense/run and shoot)

We all know the knocks against Tebow (not a true QB) and Colt McCoy (a system QB). Sam Bradford is a big question mark because of his injury this season, so he is an unknown who could move back into the graces of high first round consideration based on his performances at the combine and his pro day workout. However, standing alone in current certainty is Jimmy Clausen. Everyone knows what Clausen is capable of at this point, where he came from, who he faced, who his coach was, and that he has all of the tools to succeed in the NFL. I don’t know about you, but I do not see the Rams passing on him or Bradford (depending on what happens), and I do not see them relying on Tebow or Colt McCoy as their future QB (plus if they took Suh #1, chances are they would not have a chance at these guys at pick 33). That would either force them to take a 2nd tier QB like Jevan Snead, Tony Pike, Tim Hiller, Dan LeFevour (no offense to the CMU fans), Zac Robinson, John Skelton, Sean Canfield, Jonathan Crompton, and Bill Stull, in the second round or later, or get a stop gap guy in free agency.

Last year, the #1 and #2 picks, and their contracts, were:
1) Detroit – QB, Matthew Stafford, Georgia – Signed (6-years, $72 million; $41.7 million guaranteed)
2) St. Louis – OT, Jason Smith, Baylor – Signed (5-years, $62M max; $33M guaranteed)

Being that this will be an uncapped year, and no rookie salary cap or structure will be in place, we can expect the new rookies to get all of what last year’s guys did, and then some. Clausen will likely get a 6 year deal worth a total of 80-84 million, with 50 mill guaranteed, while Suh will likely Garner a 6 year deal worth a total of 70-72 million (similar to Matt Ryan’s contract at pick 3 in 2008). Now, tell me that the Rams will pass on a potential “franchise” QB, just to save 10-12 million, when they really have no other option other than to continue sucking on offense, or get a kid in there and get him going toward being the man of the future for their franchise. I don’t see THAT happening! :o)

Dominant? He hasn't played a snap in the NFL yet and he is already being called dominant?

Let’s wait and see how he does before we call him that. Does anyone here remember Tony Mandarich? He was going to be the next great thing. Thank god Green Bay took him or we might have missed out on Barry Sanders.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 14, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

If the Rams trade the # 1 pick for a later pick, who says there will be a QB [that they want] around?

Then we could trade our pick to a team that wants Clausen. I believe there are a few of them. If the Rams want Suh they will take him. If they want a QB, most likely Clausen IMO, they will take him.
Trading the # 1 pick is unlikely and really we have no control over it anyway. The Lions will take the BPA Suh, McCoy, or Berry.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 14, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

If they trade away #1

and thus Suh to another team, then I hope we trade #2 to someone who wants Clausen just to screw STL over.

by ATL Lion on Jan 14, 2010 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

We will know before the draft

i think it is almost a necessity now to have the contract worked out for the #1 pick ahead of time.

by HoorayForEverything on Jan 14, 2010 1:46 PM EST reply actions

good point

i forgot about signability…. we got a chance… but QB’s are usually more expensive… it will be interesting as we and Lions management “wiggle and squirm uncomfortably” as the draft approaches….. to see what the Rams do… or if they trade?

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

Colt McCoy says...

He’ll be 100% in 2 weeks.

On Thursday, McCoy was announced as the winner of the Manning Award as the nation’s best college quarterback. In a conference call with reporters, McCoy said he met with sports doctor James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday and was told he’ll have a full recovery without surgery.

“He basically told me I would be fine with two weeks of rehab,” McCoy said.

“I certainly expect to go and do things at the combine” in February, McCoy said. “I’m doing much better now.”

by CLF on Jan 14, 2010 3:18 PM EST reply actions

No one will trust that

Until they see him throw at the combine or the proday. Until then, he will be considered broken.

And if he trys to do the proday only thing, he will totally get dinged as trying to avoid showing an injury.

by ATL Lion on Jan 14, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Good thing the combine

and prodays are before the draft….LOL…. DOH!

only one thing to say

I’m kinda getting tired of the same arguments being presented from both sides of this debate. Can we at least put this thing to bed for a week or two?

The whole football world thinks you have your numbers reversed

But the whole football world has been very wrong 4 months out of the draft before.

by ATL Lion on Jan 15, 2010 7:18 AM EST up reply actions

In my mind.....

It is a guaranteed fact that the Rams will take a QB #1……no matter how good Suh is or how bad the St. Louis fanbase wants him. It’s not a matter of how much they will have to pay the prospect, it is about the fact that it is a #1 pick and the Rams do not have a long term solution at QB (the most important player on the team). The #1 pick is going to be 2 things:

1) The best long term value for the money (regardless of how much that turns out to be)
2) A player that warrants #1 pick money

People will argue that Jimmy Clausen is not a legitimate #1 pick. I call BS. He learned in a pro style offense at Notre Dame, from a coach that is well known for his ability to teach a QB what it takes to play in the NFL (Charlie Weis). He is the most NFL ready QB in the draft, and after him there is a pretty substantial dropoff at the position. His collegiate numbers are superior to Matthew Stafford’s, and Stafford was the #1 pick last year when the “entire football world” was talking about how great Aaron Curry and Jason Smith were. Yes, Suh is a dominant player…..maybe even a 1 in 1000 talent…..but so was Curry, and so was Jason Smith (according to the media hype). The Rams need a QB, and they will not wait until next year, let alone round 2……JImmy Clausen is the #1 pick in the 2010 draft, mark my words and mark it down.

or they could be smart like MM...

and play hardball for 2 months, wait until 12 hours before the draft, and then sign him to a 20% premium over the previous years #1 pick.

Now, THAT’s negotiation!

I am getting comfortable

with the fact that we will have a great DT after the draft. Mike Mayock mentioned in a chat yesterday that the best two college players he has seen on tape from college this year are the two DT’s Suh and McCoy. Even if we lost out on Suh, I think we will still be in good shape.
