Caleb Campbell

I know that he is still currently serving active duty but what is the deal with Caleb Campbell?  He obviously has not had a chance to play too much recently but I believe that the Lions still hold his rights and with the revolving door we had in the secondary I am curious if they give him a chance since I believe he is able to play starting this year.  Does anyone have any news about what the Lions are thinking with him or when he can begin to play for us?

19 freakin 64!

Find me a relative example if you wanna argue. Like det32 said, this guy was “projected” as a 2nd-3rd rounder. Other teams passed on his potential because of the fact that he was not immediately available. Then along comes Millen (a Idiot) and Marinelli (with a soft spot for servicemen) and we freaking pick this guy, as MR IRRELIVENT if I remember correctly. I guess they were taking the title “Literally” that year.

And by the way, Roger Staubach did a tour in Vietnam BEFORE entering the NFL. The Cowboys Drafted him, then waited 5 yrs for him to come home.

The NFL is a different League now, I know there are exceptions, but as a general rule this was not a good pick.

there arent any

current example teams won’t wait that long anymore and back then the cowboys were about the only team that would but the nfl was also told he’d be allowed to play but the army went back on there word and made him serve anyways if they had let him play he could have been a steal

I think you're all over thinking this...

We’re talking about Mr. Irrelevant, the last pick of the NFL draft, the guy that never pans out, ever. I’m not saying he would have been my choice if I were GM, but I’m not going to chastise Millen over his choice for Mr. Irrelevant.
And really, what difference would it have been if he had chosen somebody else? Do you think it would have panned out for us?
Didn’t think so.

Campbell was not Mr. Irrelevant

He was pick 218 of round 7…….Ramzee Robinson was the only Mr. Irrelevant we have drafted in my memory (I saw someone else say this somewhere here too).

To be fair

At the time the rule was he could play in the NFL. It was only after he joined the team that the rule was changed back to the way it was before.

The deal with military guys is...

The rules change constantly and are on a case by case basis…Taking Caleb, was a gamble and not a bad one for a 7th rounder. If the Army had flipped the coin in our favor, we would have a solid guy, with a late pick who has to do recruiting and public appearances for the Army….but, it landed on tails that day, and he is in Iraq.

Just bad luck, Campbell is a stand up guy and a patriot. Thats why he didn’t take the Kyle Eckle route. For those of you who aren’t familiar with him, he was a stud Navy FB who heard he had a chance in the NFL so he fucked around at the Naval Academy and got kicked out. He did end up on New Englands roster, and won a super bowl ring HAHA

He plays for the eagles now, so, I suppose it worked out for him. But, it was a bitch move really.

he was one of armys best players

in YEARS him and delmas would be a hitting duo caleb was a tackle machine if he plays in the NFL I belive he would have to reenter the draft I am just going by what I know with crabtree because caleb never signed a contract good question though and it wasn’t a mock draft LOL congrats GTlions

rember the crabtree thing.. if they would not have signed him he would have went back to draft

by det32 on Jan 14, 2010 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

crabtree had a set date that if he wasn’t under contract he had to reenter the draft

He'll never be back...

The only reason he is Bobsledding is cause he could use his Olympic Participation as his Service.

Ramzee Robinson

is the only Mr. Irrelevant we’ve drafted in recent years. Campbell was from the 7th but not the last overall pick. I think we hold his rights if he tries to enter the draft. I would love to see this kid come back to camp but I don’t think he can until after the 2010 season due to his service requirements but I’m not sure.

From Wikipedia, grain of salt and all that.

On July 22, 2008, Campbell agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the Lions. However, he did not have a chance to sign the contract and the following day the Army ordered him to serve his military service time, preventing him from playing football until at least 2010.12 Being an unsigned draft pick in 2008, Campbell has become an unrestricted free agent in 2009, but is currently serving military time. Here’s the link.

That sounds right to me

I think there was a point last year where the Lions had to do something with his contract otherwise he’d enter the draft pool again.

I remember that at the time, sounds right

Campbell agreed to the contract but the following day, before he could sign it and officially report on the field at training camp, the army changed its mind.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
