Ask Matthew Stafford
In the very near future I'm going to have a chance to interview Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, and I'm going to give you guys a chance to submit some of the questions. I obviously can't guarantee that your question will be part of the interview, but I will try to use as many as I can.
(Just a quick warning: please keep the questions serious and keep the comments related to the interview, because I don't want to have to search through a bunch of off-topic stuff for the questions. Thanks.)

Alcohol, drugs, parties
Matt…many people have criticized your past drinking and partying and believed this may be a potential problem for you (and the Lions) in the future. In what ways have your college or even high school partying days changed? How would you describe the alcohol, drugs, parties now with your teammates or throughout the league? Give us some dirt!!!!!!!!!
This is a cool gig for you Sean. Should be an interesting interview.
I would have to believe he will keep most answers pretty genaric, as in I don’t know how much he will discuss his partying or the actual dirt in the Lions organization. (But it never hurts to ask.)
A question along the lines of how does he prepare himself with the team and on his own through the week to face an upcoming opponent. Or maybe what is the difference, other than the pay, between getting ready for a college game and an NFL game.
I want to know
If a 50 yard TD pass is really placed right on the receiver’s hands at a predetermined spot on the field, or do you just have “a feel” for location and speed on a particular play and trust your abilities that it will hit the moving target?
In other words, could you throw a football into a trash can 50 yards away, or do you need to see and feel a human being actually running to the spot?

That's an excellent question
I hope Matt gets a chance to answer this one.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
What does he plan to work on this off season to improve his play?
I am wondering along the lines of working out with some of his teammates. Especially the WRs. Or is it more just private practice to work on his mechanics and touch.
Sean, here are a couple possible questions :
1. Matthew, we all watched as you made yourself into a legend amongst the hearts and minds of the Lions faithful during the Cleveland game; what was going through your mind when you ran away from the trainers to go back out for that last play and how much pain were you really in?
2. There has been a constant comparison between you and Mark Sanchez since the draft. You both have very similar stats for the season, but Sanchez is now going to play in the AFC championship game. Has the thought ever crossed your mind that had you not gone to Detroit, that could be you and what are your thoughts on the matter?
3. The fans in Detroit have embraced you as their Quarterback, POD especially. That being said, you threw a troubling number of interceptions this year. Do you attribute this to your being pressured too often by opposing defenses because of our inadequate offensive line or more your inexperience and how do you plan to improve coming into your sophomore season?
4. We all know that you took quite a beating this year in almost every game that you played. Our biggest concern is that you come back next year healthy, determined, and ready to take this team to at least 5-7 wins. How is the healing process going and do you fell like you will be ready to come back 100%?
That’s all for now..
And here's one just for fun...
When Detroit drafted Joey Harrington, he was said to be our savior and the man who was going to bring us out of the dark ages. I immediately ran out and bought a Joey Harrington jersey, a decision I will regret for the rest of my life. I want to believe you are the future, I really do, and I am seriously considering buying a Matthew Stafford jersey, but I am still on the fence.
In your own words, convince me your jersey is a sound investment and not more fuel for my Detroit Lions jersey bonfire.
I like your questions MattyDC
Sean should do a couple of them.

QB Position
When you decided to enter the NFL draft, mostly all the scouts said you have all the tools and arm strength to be a great NFL quarterback. With the St. Louis Rams having the first pick in the draft, they are in need of a young "Franchise QB". I know you had a chance to play against many of the big name college QB’s that are entering the draft. Do you believe any of the players coming out have the Tools, arm strength, and Metal make-up to be the number 1 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft?

Ask him...
“Matthew, what are your individual, and Team Goals for the 2010 season? What will you be doing Individually in the off-season to prepare and reach these goals in the coming year? Also in your mind what was your greatest accomplishment, and biggest opportunity for improvement (short-coming) in your rookie season with the Lions?”
Thanks for doin this Sean, you’re a great guy!
ask him
After one full season how do you feel about the change from Georgia to the city of Detroit and what are your goals for next season as you mature into a NFL quaterback?
Good luck in the interview sounds like a great oppertunity

2-Matthew, we’ve all seen pictures of you partying on a boat with a bunch of hot chicks. Do you need a WingMan? Was Daunte giving you tips on not letting the boat party get out of hand?
3-Is Pettigrew recovering on schedule and do you think Heller will be back?
have I been under a rock all season?
Is Matt dating sharapova?…..I was unaware….I figured he just pimped around

I would like to know
what he sees as the biggest need for the team right now. There are obviously holes that we could improve on in the roster but what about the attitude of the team? What is this locker room lacking that all the successful teams he has played for in the past have had.
Mr. Stafford, a question in two parts:
With a disappointing 2-14 season, and several games missed on your part due to injury what is your focus this offseason to make sure you remain healthy for a 2010 campaign, and what do you think is the focus of the Lions as a team, specifically what aspects of the team can be improved upon via free agency and the draft?
And a second question:
Two names of players the Lions have a chance of acquiring in the offseason, one from free agency, and one from the draft. Players you would like to see wear a Lions uniform because it would improve the teams chances of competing for the playoffs next season.
3 questions
Here are the two questions I’d like to run by him:
1. With hindsight, does he think it was probably a bad idea for him to get thrown back out there on Thanksgiving just four days after getting his shoulder crushed. Does he think that it was probably a little too soon to go back out there that soon
2. Which injury bothered you and affected your play more this year – the knee or the shoulder
3. I doubt it will happen, but if Culpepper comes back next year as a backup, how would you feel about that and how is your relationship w/ him
two questions...
1. Suppose you had a time machine. You could take any player (who is not currently a Lion) from NFL history and add him, in his prime, to your offense. Who would it be, an why?
2. Who comes out ahead…Conan, Leno, FOX, or NBC?
Yes, everybody had great questions........Sean has a lot of material to work with
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
If he didn't say Barry Sanders, and without hesitation......
I don’t know what I would do…..but I would do something angry!
hopefully he doesn't read this thread, now.
I was hoping he could get the “correct” answer on his own, if this question was asked :-)
My Question
Do you(Stafford) think that you have enough of the necessary NFL experience to go out there and lead this team out of its rut?
Congrats Sean
Such a great oppotunity for you, plus, giving us a chance to connect with Staff is pretty awesome.
A couple of questions:
1. How’s the connection between you and CJ going? How are you guys going to work together in the offseason to strengthen that connection?
2. What was his best throw this year?
3. Are there any players he played with or against that he’d like to see us draft this year?

My Question
Matt, it’s often said that an NFL player makes the most improvement between his first and second seasons. Many Lions fans are thrilled that you got a chance to play and learn from experience. Many of us thought that you learned a lot and improved tremendously over the course of the 2009 season. In what area would you say that you learned the most and made the most improvement?
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
This is a pretty exciting opporunity. Congrats Sean.
Seeing that you’ve already been injured in your short career, what do you think of the ever increasing amount of penalties created to protect quarterbacks? Are injuries just a part of the game or should the NFL do all that is possible to alter the game in order to protect the quarterbacks?
Read my Lions analysis at: http://www.studyofsports.com/?cat=142
if you didnt play football what would you do??
cant really think of any thing most questons have been hit
i dont think he will anser any thing regarding the 2010 draft
My big Q- uestion:
Mr. Stafford, you have most, if not all, of the tools to become an NFL legend. Say during your time in Detroit, the Lions don’t do very well for 3 or 4 more years and your not getting the recognition you should, ie: Calvin Johnson, would you feel any pressure to demand a trade to a better team?

Another one
ask what he thinks of the red wings and the tigers? seeing as he was spotted at a event for both teams it would be kind of cool to get his opinion in sports teams outside of the lions.
Also off the top of my head has he had time to catch any of moreno or massaqui games this year and what did he think of his former bulldog teammates rookie years

Here's mine...
Now that you have your rookie season behind you, what would you say is the one thing that surprised you about being an NFL QB that you will be more prepared for now that you have some experience?
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
Havent seen this one yet!!!!
1) How bad does he want to stick it to Sanchize on thanksgivng? If of course we get him instead of brady.
2) Eminem or Kid Rock?
3) What he thinks of Kiper and McShay saying that Bradford and McCoy were better than him last year but now they don’t have much good to say?
4) Hungry Howies or Pizza Hut

Ask the dude who we should draft.
I’m curious… This guy is designated as one of, if not the most important player on our team by management… So who would the franchise guy draft to protect him, and/or help him lead us to victory?
"We’re going to turn this team around 360 degrees." –Jason Kidd
Two Questions
Which team did you like/hate playing against and why?
Now that you have a year under your belt, if you were a young QB coming into the draft this year, what would you work on to get ready for your first season that you may have felt you didnt emphasize enough?
Favorite opponent or rival?
Q: I know you have only played one season, and missed a number of games with injury, but is there a team that jumps out to you as the Lions biggest rivalry? Or a team that was particularly fun to play against?
Instead of a question...
How about you just let him know from all of the diehard Lions fans here that we got his back. That the Detroit faithful just want him to succeed, and already are enjoying what he brings to the team.
I remember a lot of games watching, and just hoping/wishing the kid knew that we appreciate the heart and passion we’ve already seen him play with. I know it’s a game, and he gets paid ridiculous sums of money to play it, but especially in this city, you hear the boos far more often than you get a pat on the back.
I’d like to buy the guy a drink and just say, “Hey, thanks.”

I would like to know
As a fan who never played football, offensive holding and defensive pass interference are really frustrating to watch because they seem incredibly subjective with completely arbitrary criteria for calling them or not calling them.
As an NFL player, are those two penalties really that subjective, or is there a detailed and predictable set of criteria that players and coaches can see that a fan cannot?
by HoorayForEverything on Jan 19, 2010 8:11 AM EST reply actions
Sean
I am impressed. How did you get an interview with Stafford? What I wouldn’t give to be in your shoes……
I have some questions and hypothetical situations to suggest to Mr. Stafford. Maybe you could consider this:
“Hypothetical situation Matt, you are no longer the QB of the Lions, but instead you are the General Manager. You have just seen your team go 0-16 and 2-14 over the last two seasons. There are obvious holes all over the team, and the fan base is screaming about the offensive and defensive line being the team’s biggest needs, due to the apparent lack of a pass rush on defense, as well as a lack of pass protection and run blocking on offense (yes, you actually listen to the fans and you value their opinion, even though you realize that the fans are not experts and do not necessarily understand all aspects of football as a business). The current draft prospects are available in the coming draft, and the Lions have the #2 pick”.
Question 1 – What is more important to YOU? Drafting the best players available at the draft position you have, regardless of positional need, or filling the holes that are perceived to be the most glaring needs for the team, by drafting the BPA based on positional need? In other words, would you draft Ndamukong Suh, or Eric Berry if Suh is gone, at pick 2, based on the fact that they would be the best players available regardless of positional need, OR would you draft either Suh, or Gerald McCoy if Suh is gone, based on the fact that the defensive line is our biggest hole and McCoy is the next best DT on the board after Suh? Or would you draft someone else completely?
Question 2 – What do you see as the biggest need for this team to become competitive (if he says, “well I feel that we are competitive”, then you say “Let me rephrase that….What do you see as the biggest obstacle for this team to have a winning record”)?
“Hypothetical situation #2……you have been the starting QB in Detroit for your entire rookie contract (the team exercised the option), and you are in your contract year. You have continuously improved, but the organization has failed to put talent around you that allows you to win. The offensive line has not improved…..in fact it is the same line as it was when you were drafted, and you are still getting sacked between 40-50 times per season (our line allowed 43 sacks this season, between our 3 QBs)”.
Question 1 – I realize that professional football is a team sport and a business, and that everyone is accountable for their roles. Who would you say was responsible for the aforementioned hypothetical situation, and who would take the majority of the blame? Is it the front office, the coaching staff, the offensive lineman themselves, the wide receivers, the running backs, or do you take the blame? Why?
Question 2 – Would you sign another contract and remain loyal to Detroit if this hypothetical became reality?
Question 3 – How big of an impact do the WRs (running routes and getting open), the running backs (being effective), and the speed of your own release have on the offensive line’s ability to sustain pass protection and provide a pocket for you to stand in and throw the football?
Question 4 – Can the lack of consistency in our run game be blamed for our failures to establish a passing game? What was wrong with our WRs this year (excluding Calvin Johnson)? Was it that you throw the ball too hard for them to catch it? Was it that there was a lack of chemistry between you and them? A lack of communication or understanding?
Have fun Sean…..make sure the kid knows that we have faith and believe in him and the team. :o)
here's one:
Matt, you didn’t spend the pre-season practicing with the first string offense, and then due to injuries during the season either you or other skilled position players (namely Calvin) didn’t practice during the week. How much did this effect your performance on Sundays, and how much better do you think your timing with your receivers will be with a full offseason and pre-season to prepare?
matt
if you had a choice between a 2nd wr, runningback or a lineman in the draft what would you pick?
DAMN!!!
I read this post too late. All the good questions have been asked. I didn’t see one specifically pertaining to this but I would ask the following (since I was an ECON major in undergrad:)
Matt: the Detroit local economy is obviously one of the worst big city economies in the country. With payrolls and population shrinking in the city, how can a QB for a bad franchise give the people of the city of Detroit hope not only for a winning football team but hope that the Detroit, like the football team, is headed in the right direction.
I hope that’s not too gay.

a few more:
1) what quarterbacks do you watch game tape of in hopes of emulating? Peyton? Brady?
2) since the season has ended, has anyone outside of the Lions organization contacted you with any advice and/or words of encouragement?
3) what axe hair-care product do you recommend for a dry scalp?
Your third question is actually going to be really funny once you find out how I got this interview
And find out about the promotion that comes along about it.

Congrats Sean...you are building quite a name for yourself!!
my question…can you tell i am of the long winded variety?…that wasn’t my question…lol
as lions fans, we have watched many painful years. we have travelled near and far to watch our team…through good and bad…these days many have “robbed peter to pay paul” so they can see a game. we have watched one of the great players of the game on our home field. we all see the promise in the new regime, in the team & in Matt Stafford. However, if we can all remember when we were kids…for me, i was surrounded by 49’ers & Raiders jackets…kids chose their teams based on who the best or most bad ass team in the league is (or was at the time). I want to share my love for the Lions with my son. Long lead up i know…but if you could speak to the next generation of football fans as my son is…what would you say to him so that he hangs a poster of you in your #9 jersey on his wall? What would you say to that audience to grow the die hard Lions nation now that you are at the helm? We see the change…but kids…they are very much in the moment and they only see a franchise in the cellar.
I would like to know
If NFL players study film at the same camera angle we see on TV, or if you have a more “video game” style camera angle? If so, can you stand to watch a game casually at the network camera angle or is it no big deal?
Corollary: When NFL players watch a game together casually, do they turn the announcers off, leave them on to mock or be part of a drinking game, or are they not that bad to you guys?

great job getting this interview, Sean. The good blogs are really starting to get noticed. Since there have been so many questioned already, I’ll just add one quick one…
“Many fans did not want the Lions to draft a quarterback first overall last year. Did you feel any of that contentiousness when you arrived here in Detroit? If so, do you feel that your play this year changed the way people feel about you now?”
Anyway… great job getting this interview. Have to say I’m a bit jealous. Tell him DrewsLions… aka “his biggest fan” said “What up”.

Cautionary Suggestion
It might be best not to ask Matt any question that asks him to do any of the following:
1. speak badly of a teammate or position group.
2. make choices or decisions that exceed his authority, choices more appropriately left to the coaching staff or front office.
3. any question that implies that the Lions are a bad organization.
4. any question that provides bulletin board material for other teams.
It might be prudent to put ourselves in Matt’s shoes. We don’t want to put him on the spot. He won’t be comfortable criticizing anyone in the organization, won’t want to step on any toes, and in general would prefer not to look at anything here as a negative. The Lions don’t have problems, they have opportunities…..and Matt Stafford is optimistic about the future here and willing to help his teammates, and help lead this team to the Playoffs and beyond.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
good points
I’m sure Sean will filter out the not-quite-appropriate questions and/or rephrase as necessary.
another question, along those lines:
Matt, do you ever have questions thrown to you by the media that you want to answer, but you just feel like you can’t (or shouldn’t) quite say what you want?
Being a leader of an NFL team, do you ever feel pressure to be to be political rather than candid, about expressing feelings and frustrations you may have?
Do they have media/communications training for rookies in how to handle various questions and scenarios you guys face with your careers in the spotlight?
and this is why i dont think
he will answer any draft ,FA, if he where GM, how meany pieces we need type of questions…. witch kind of sucks but we dont want are qb throwing people under the buss..
one ones i see him touching are
what will you do in the off season??
what will you do in the off season to better your personal game??
how do you think you did as a rookie??
if you didnt play in the nfl what would you do??
really cant think of any thing els that he wouldnt just blow off
Here's a nice softball question for you to ask him
If he could have one of his old Georgia teammates on the team, who would it be?
Another question
Matt, will you watch the draft on TV this year?
How will you react to an offensive player chosen to play with you—will you immediately look up some scouting reports on the web? give the guy a call to say “welcome to the Lions”?
Question
“What do you believe is the most under-rated position in football?”
Matt..
1.What genre of music do you most listen to while listening to your ipod and what song at the moment cant you get enough of?
2.Everyone has a guilty pleasure they listen to, what is something or someone (artist) you listen to that maybe would catch some ribbing in the locker room?
Thanks again for doing this, Sean!
Ruffed up in Minneapolis!
Near the end of the game in Minneapolis, I think you had just finished taking your 100th sack of the day. You peeled yourself up off the turf and your shoulder pads where hanging out. Not one of your fellow players helped you tuck them back in. You took the next snap looking like “Oh yaeh I just finished taking the 100th sack of the day”! That bugged me that not one of your teamates on the field with you, helped his quaterback sort himself out. What do you think? Did Coach address this in the film room? P.S. you showed crazy “Moxie” that day. Hope they find you some protection.
*** This is not a serious question..So Mr. Yuille dont waste your time with this one***
