Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

In my opinion

To me the lions are just a couple guys away from being a complete team. After watching the game today i realize that we need to address a couple of positions in the draft and free agency. Our D line needs someone to create havoc every play, if we draft Suh then that spot will be filled, helping and making the players aroud him better. Free agents that are available and most likley to be signed by detroit would be Ray Edwards from the Vikings or Kyle Vanden Bosch only because of the Schwarts connection. As far as our O line goes, we need to address our guard positions. The line is weak and needs in my opinion some young blood for Stafford. So i say lets draft our guards. As far as our play makers on offense go, we need a solid #2 WR. I dont think we will draft one so heres some free agents that could possibly be picked up. Steve Breaston, Kevin Walter, and Jason Avant. Remember im trying to be realisitic about the free agents. Kevin Smith, Maurice Morris, and Aaron Brown will hold down the RB position for one more year, unless a top RB in the draft falls to us. Alright back to the defensive side of the ball. Our LBS are solid and have great depth, and would like to leave them right where they are. NO trading Sims, resign Foote, and Levy is great coming off the bench and filling in. We all know our corners are weak, but in my opinion they are better than our O line and D line. All we need is better corners and depth at safety. We should be able to get a starting CB in the draft, who i dont know. I guess my whole point is we need to rejuvinate our offensive and defensive line first and fast, get people in and get them signed. If the lines improve 15 to 20 % from last year then Stafford will have more time to throw and Kevin Smith will have bigger holes to run through. And as far as our defense goes.... well we all know what a dominating D line can do. Ok fire away i would really like some input on who to draft and pick up in free agency if possible, im not talking dream guys im talking realistic guys.    Thanks Timmy20

A couple?

You said the lions are couple guys away from being a complete team. Then you named a lot more then a couple of guys that we need. I wish we were a couple guys away but I think we need a couple really good offseasons to be good.

by Lions1788 on Jan 3, 2010 5:11 PM EST reply actions

A "couple of guys"???

First, not trying to be a jerk and burst any bubbles… but we are much, much more than a “couple of guys” away from being good. We just finished the season 2-14. We have holes everywhere. You named like 6 positions above where we need new starters… and that’s being generous. That’s not a couple…..

In my opinion, we need #2 QB, #2 WR, #1 RG, #1 LG, #1 RE, #1 LE, #1 DT, #1 CB, #2 CB, #2 S (opposite Delmas). That’s ten players without even getting into the true depth of the team or replacing guys like Backus. That’s almost half the total starting lineup needing to be turned over. Like I said, not trying to burst bubbles, but we are probably 2 full off-seasons from division contention… at least. Sorry!

You, Drew, are correct

We have many holes to fill and not enough picks to do it.

your missing my point

who do you guys think will help this team in the off season draft or free agency, and next time i will make sure to say “a couple in each position” jesus if the lions players are any thing like this its no wonder they cant win

Anything like what?

You are the one that made the post. Yes… you should have clarified. There is a big difference between saying we are “just a couple guys away from being a complete team” and “a couple in each position”. That’s Mt Everest versus the local sledding hill.

Either way… it’s called being realistic. You can’t go 2-14 and be close to contention. I’m one of the most optimistic fans out there, but if it looks like manure, smells like manure and plays like manure…. I call bullshit. We have lots of holes and only so many draft picks. This FO is committed to building through the draft, so it will take some time. When was the last time the Lions spent heavily in free agency? Like I said… I’m just being realistic. Sorry that you don’t like that.

a bunch of negitive nancys

i come to this site for info on my favorite team. all i see when i read stuff on this site is people cutting each other down before they help one another. rather than giving help its eaiser to slap people around for there opinion. dont get me wrong its not always like that but come on drew were all in this together. for some stupid reason we all like a losing team and want to see it turn around, your bitching about my comment a couple guys, and all im asking is who the people of the pride thinks can help this team. is it so hard for you to tell me that some free agents probally wont come here or who you would like to see us draft. maybe your in a pissy mood cause the lions lost. who knows, what ever… some pod friend you are.

by timmy20 on Jan 3, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, hey, hey.... easy dude.

This site is built on back and forth commentary. If we all agreed on everything, what the hell is there to discuss? For the record, I was not “bitching about” your comment, nor was I “slapping you around verbally”. I think you need to stop taking these comments to heart so much. I was respectfully giving my opinions to your post. The problem is that you started you post with a pretty questionable statement… “To me the lions are just a couple guys away from being a complete team.” Did you think most of us would agree with that? Did you not think that would invoke some strong opinions?

Look, we all take our lumps from time to time by posting our opinions here. We all share a common bond, but that doesn’t mean we all have to agree on everything all the time. We are passionate because of that common bond and our love for the Lions. But…. this is football. Don’t take the comments so hard, just defend your point of view and you’ll be fine.

cool

now what do you want to se the lions do in the off season

by timmy20 on Jan 3, 2010 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Start by just having a solid, common sense draft

I really won’t get into the “I’m-pissed-because-the-Lions-didn’t-take-who-I-wanted-them-to-take” mode this year… beyond Suh. I really, really like him… obviously. If our off-season could start there… that would be great. Beyond that, they just need to get impact players with every pick, regardless of position because our needs far exceed the number of picks we have. Believe it or not, I think that we really need to help the huge investment we have with Stafford and Johnson… that means O-Line and another wide receiver. I’d like to see them draft a guard and receiver within the first four rounds.

Free agency is going to be a crapshoot because of the uncapped year and rules without the CBA. I think if we could get an Aaron Kampman and maybe one quality DB, that would be great. Like I said before, this team will be built in the draft and it’s going to take a while.

by DrewsLions on Jan 3, 2010 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody is cutting you down, we just stated the obvious. You said we are a couple guys away then you named bunch of positions we need.

by Lions1788 on Jan 3, 2010 6:02 PM EST reply actions

so can you give me your input

who would you like to see come to this team and whats the odds they come here? Ibelieve i did ask at the end of my post the same question im asking you now, but when i wrote “a couple” it threw every body off sorry.

by timmy20 on Jan 3, 2010 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

A couple things to keep in mind.

Free agency – With no CBA, the year will be uncapped with new rules for restricted and unrestricted. IMO, there will be an all time low amount of quality FAs available.
Second – until the deadline comes for declaring for the draft, you really don’t know all the info to make choices on the draft, outside of the obvious. (Suh, Berry, Ect.) People can tell you who they would like, but their choices may be a little unrealistic. I have a good idea who I would like for the Lions first pick, and I think thats a no brainer. Beyond that, I like to wait and see how the pro days and combine workouts go.
With all the mocks going on around here, I have to think you could get an idea where most of use stand.

by Lead Hunter on Jan 3, 2010 6:22 PM EST reply actions

I gotcha timmy

IMO. Here are our solid positions. LB, QB, RB, TE. Everything else is a toss up. I know we need a #2 WR, #2 S (opposite Delmas), #1 DT, #1 or 2 CB, and our O-line is a carousel. Some of these positions can be filled during FA. I gonna get in Gator mode for a minute. I like Joe Haden as CB for us. I also Like the Pouncey’s for C and OG positions. Hopefully Dunlap falls to the 2nd round but what do I know, I’m just a fan.

by Quez81 on Jan 3, 2010 6:31 PM EST reply actions

Well I will give Timmy some slack here...

I think that the Lions are a couple of players away from getting to an 8-8 mark. But those players have to be flat out studs. Suh would be one of them. And he would have to go beyond his hype. Another player would have to be in the secondary. Mainly a CB. And he would have to be above average. The final player. An OG, or a LT. He would have to have a Pro Bowl season.

Oh yeah. And nobody can get injured. If the Lions can get those players. And the young players continue to develop. Than it is possible for a 8-8 season

if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin

by JCruize on Jan 3, 2010 6:34 PM EST reply actions

Let's Get

Jason Avant! Ray Edwards is most likely just the product of being in his contract year and a great supporting cast. Vanden Bosch worries me with his injuries. The last thing we need is to sign a guy for top dollar and have him be out for half the season. I like your optimism though. We really are pretty close to being a good team.

by lionsman81 on Jan 3, 2010 8:28 PM EST reply actions

Lot of work to do.....

….I do however agree with what this new management team did last year and hope they can do the same…..The one freeagent on your list I can see Detroit landing is Vnadenbosh becasue of his ties to Schwartz…..Other then that the other guys are wishful thinking….I hope im wrong but It wil be tough to get those guys…..thats why I stil think Detroit Drafts best player available again this year and we just hopefully can keep improving.

by BennieBladesFan on Jan 3, 2010 8:52 PM EST reply actions

VandenBosch is gettin old.

and didn’t seem to have a very good year this year.

I'm hoping we look at these holes

DT, DE, OG, CB, S, RB, WR..the rest aren’t needed quite so badly.
