Senior Bowl Open Thread

I will be at a basketball game and therefore unable to watch the Senior Bowl live, but feel free to chat about it (4 p.m. on NFL Network) just like we do with Lions games during the season.  I know this game would have been of great interest to everybody no matter what, but considering Jim Schwartz and company are the coaches for the north team, it almost feels like the Lions do play today in a sense.  Anyways, enjoy the game and I look forward to reading everybody's thoughts on it (I plan on catching a replay later).

That's been his year this year.....quietly effective, happens to seniors

Often college CB’s and safeties rack up INTS, the word get out, and their INT totals drop as seniors (and sometimes as juniors, like Berry, who won the Thorpe anyway). Opposing QB’s quit testing them, instead throwing to the other side of the field and testing the other defenders. It’s a sign of respect. TCU threw away from Wilson in the Fiesta Bowl too…….but he made the play when he WAS thrown at. Covers his man tight, doesn’t give too much cushion, gets in WR’s faces, and plays with confidence and swagger.

Short arms?

I’m curious about something I’ve read regarding arm length. From my understanding he has short arms for the position and in the history of the NFL noone who plays DE has ever had double digit sacks in a season with arms as short as him. That being the case do we risk a pick on someone who history has shown because of the arm length will never aquire double digit sacks? I know all picks are a gamble but this seems like a reach to me given what history of that position tells us regarding that physical attributes.

by Usmarine0341 on Jan 31, 2010 5:36 AM EST reply actions

short arms

dwight freeny has very similar size and he was third in the league in sacks. It is true brown doesn’t have ideal size but it doesn’t mean can’t play. Lamar Woodly was fourth in sacks but he is really a 3-4 linebacker.

by lions09 on Jan 31, 2010 9:32 AM EST reply actions

Jerry Hughes has similar size to Freeney.......so does Cliff Avril......and both are fast

In this defense, once we get enough pieces around them, both could rack up some sacks and pressures………Avril’s getting close to the QB now as it is.

Player stock is rising and falling after this week.

The Senior Bowl is a big part of player grades for the draft. Career game tape is huge, but the Senior Bowl game AND practices are important too, because it’s the best against the best…..the very guys they’ll be playing againt on Sundays in the future. And as Schwartz said, you get to see these guys all week, learn about them as people, as individuals….not just as players. Combines, Pro Days, and team visits are all less than a day.

Here’s some selected players on the OL, DL and secondary whose stock is rising or falling, according to Matt McGuire at walterfootball.com:
http://walterfootball.com/draft2010stockmatt.php

RISERS

Alex Carrington, DE, Arkansas State
Carrington dominated this week in 1v1’s and flashed athleticism I hadn’t seen before. He’s one of the most intriguing prospects to follow for draftniks.

Sun Belt Conference, was flying under the radar.
Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan
Graham isn’t falling out of the second round with his consistent week, but I’m not buying the first-round hype.

Who? j/k
Cam Thomas, NT, North Carolina
Thomas was one of the more impressive defensive linemen all week and the 3-4 teams took notice. He has great power and displayed an unstoppable bull rush.

I’d had him on my radar for awhile as a 7th/FA possibility. Rounds 4-7 tend to be a crapshoot, with a chance of going in the 4th or going undrafted. BPA is less important in the crapshoot rounds, even for BPA teams. It gets much more subjective at this point, the talent is more even, the uncertainty greater…….so teams tend to fill out their needs more in the later rounds, and spread the picks among different positions. Don’t expect a team to pick 3 LB’s in a row in the later rounds. Cam Thomas is a good cheap young NT possibility for Gunther’s defense.

Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest
Had great practices on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, but struggled on Thursday. With good coaching, he could be a star in the league.

Needs coaching and awareness…….speed and physicality, but needs to be more of a playmaker. IMO, not as smart as Kyle Wilson. Ghee seems to more of an athlete, and less of a football player. Not a complete player, and at this point not a guy I’d want to depend on in crunch time. Too much of a project at this point for my tastes.

Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
I loved what Wilson accomplished all week long. This prospect is an all-out playmaker as he showed the complete package in Mobile. He solidified a second-round grade for me and is now my No. 3 corner prospect.

What’s not to like? He fits our defense as a talented, fast, smart, man cover corner who covers his man tight, gets in WR’s faces, and makes plays. Best of all, he has the personality of a Delmas, which Schwartz loves. As the Schwartz said, “when this team wins, it’ll be because they play with Louis Delmas’ personality.” We need more guys like this. Perfect fit for the Lions, in more ways than one. The meek shall inherit the earth, but in the NFL, they get run over and laughed at en route to an 0-16 season. We’ve seen that first-hand. We need more guys like Delmas! Bring on the swagger!

Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
Barring something we don’t know about Williams behind closed doors, he’s a locked in first=round pick and could go as high as the top 20 picks.

Good NT prospect.

FALLERS

Selvish Capers, T, West Virginia
Capers has good speed, but I see a converted tight end with no blocking instincts and very raw technique. He struggled all week.

No surprise here. I thought he was undersized and a bad fit for our downhill blocking scheme. Converted TE indeed.

Mike Johnson, G, Alabama
His lack of bulk and athleticism showed in Mobile, but on tape he produced. He’s still likely to go in the mid rounds.

On the fence on this guy. Good, but not great strength for his size, but lacks bulk for our downhill power blocking scheme.

Trevard Lindley, CB, Kentucky
What happened to Lindley? As a sophomore he was one of the most dominant corners in the nation and now he looks disinterested and rarely made plays all week. He could go as low as Round 6.

50% of the game is 90% mental.

Taylor Mays, SS, USC
Mays was overrated coming into Mobile, and now everyone is down on him – but it isn’t his fault. Some say he can correct his flaws with coaching, but there are several flaws in his game, and I still maintain a second-round grade on him. However, I still believe he is a first-round pick.

Taylor Mays disappointed. Imagine that. So NOW people are figuring out that Taylor Mays is overrated? Herding lemmings is a tough job.

Kurt Coleman, SS, Ohio State
Coleman lacks speed and is a little stiff. He’ll go off the board between Rounds 4 and 5. I was disappointed with his performance this week.

Sounds right. No surprise. Bad fit for the Lions.

Vladimir Ducasse, OL, UMASS
Ducasse struggled with the jump in competition. He got a little top heavy at times, and now he seems destined for Round 2.

Round 2? I didn’t know he was rated that high…..I was considering him as a 4th-Rounder. Raw small-school guy with upside. Too risky for the 2nd or 3rd Round, but in the mix later with John Jerry, etc.

Syd’Quan Thompson, CB, California
Thompson might have to make a position change to strong safety or nickel. He doesn’t have the footspeed or agility to play corner.

I was on the fence on this guy too, precisely because I had questions about his speed and agility. I don’t like the answers.

Here's a couple more

From Walter Cherepinsky at http://walterfootball.com/draft2010stock.php

Riser

Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan
Brandon Graham won Senior Bowl MVP, and deservedly so. He was in the South backfield all afternoon and made some great stops against the run. Mike Mayock even compared Graham to LaMarr Woodley. Graham is too short to be a 4-3 defensive end, but he should feel right at home as a 3-4 rush linebacker. Arizona, New England and Green Bay will consider him at the end of Round 1.

Good player, but might be too short to be a DE in a 4-3. Reminds me of a couple good MSU DE’s in recent years who were athletic and productive but short.

Faller

Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
While Mike Iupati was solid in run-blocking, he was completely abused in pass protection by Geno Atkins. Iupati was beaten numerous times, was called for holding once, and should have been whistled for holding two other times. Let’s not get carried away and call Iupati the best offensive lineman in the 2010 NFL Draft, like Mike Mayock did before the Senior Bowl. Iupati is a tremendous run-blocking guard who is raw in pass protection.

He did play out of position part of the time at RG in that game. Looked bad in practices at LT, but good at LG, I heard. Also, might get picked in the late 1st any way by the Cowboys or Eagles. Good player who fits, but not getting my expectations up about landing him at #34. One way or the other, I have a hunch it’s not going to happen.
