Louis Delmas - No Votes for DROY

Seriously, there is something VERY wrong in the NFL and I'm about to stop watching it. Brian Cushing, steroid freak and HGH DROY. Louis Delmas didn't get a SINGLE vote. Anyone else see anything wrong with this?

He wasnt going to get the recognition he deserves because of our record. Until we improve no lion will ever get recognition with these types of awards.

man I love delmas as much as you guys

But have you even watched cushing play this year? He was definetly the DPOY…..but If delmas wouldn’t have gotten hurt and missed a few games he might of had votes.

by GOLDIGGAH on Jan 5, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

Because I see them floundering all over C.J. and last time I checked he was on the Lions.

by LionInIowa on Jan 5, 2010 12:15 PM EST reply actions

according to PFT

It’s the 9th time in 10 years a linebacker won. Charles Woodson is the last DB and that was 1998.

Tackles, sacks, turnovers are the numbers people care about and linebackers make the most of them. If a safety is making the most tackles, I am guessing he is on a bad overall defense and therefore further handicapped from getting an award.

Louis will have the last laugh. Ed Reed didn’t win it (don’t know if he got votes in 2002). Troy Polamalu didn’t win or get any votes in 2003.

Exactly

The system is B.S.

Hey kids, you too can be popped for PED’s at the combine, get drafted in the 1st round and go on to win DROY.

I was

a little disappointed to see that Delmas didn’t get any votes, too. I thought at the very least, he’d be in consideration and get a few.

Cushing received 39 of 50 possible votes to win the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Tuesday. Bills safety Jairus Byrd finished second with six votes, while Cushing’s college teammate Clay Matthews finished third with three votes. Redskins pass rush Brian Orakpo got two votes.

by abnerman on Jan 5, 2010 12:30 PM EST reply actions

Delmas wouldn't have even won Safety Rookie of the Year

Rookie Jarius Byrd came in second in DROY with six votes. He had 9 INTs on the year.

I agree....

Hopefully this fuels Delmas’s passion to get better.

Remember, he shot himself in the foot acouple times with stupid penalties and fines. People remember that stuff.

by CLF on Jan 5, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

Come the f!ck on man

Jarius Byrd ended the season on IR, had almost 50 less tackles than Delmas, 12 assists to Delmas’ 29, and no TD’s.

Delmas ended the season as only the second player in history to have a fumble and pick for TD’s and a safety.

Jarius Byrd can blow me.

Awards are for people interested in beauty pageants and ice skating

I couldn’t care less who makes the Pro Bowl, or gets this or that award. Bottom line, did your team make the playoffs? A. Yes B. No

A. These people deserve some recognition, I guess, if that’s the thing you’re interested in.

B. 36.36% of all NFL teams make the playoffs, this process is repeated every year. Your team sucked this year. Good luck next season with joining the A List.

Thank you.

Sorry

I’d take this line:

Key Stats
GP Tot Tckl Sacks Int TDs FF
15 94 1 2 2 0

Over this line:

Key Stats
GP Tot Tckl Sacks Int TDs FF
14 45 0 9 0 0

too bad....

those stats didn’t win either.

Bottom line…. Mathews and Cushing were lights out this year.

And remember….

by CLF on Jan 5, 2010 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

WTF are you talking about?

Texas didnt even make the playoffs so they’re in the same position as the Lions.

by LionInIowa on Jan 5, 2010 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Its simple really......

Delmas plays on a bad team with a bad defense. No one outside of Lions fans actually watch Lions games. Is it fair, I guess not, but its reality.

by vanman on Jan 5, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

Little Surprised

He got 39 out of 50 votes?? I know he played good, but there were better players than him, and the vote should have been more competitive.

The beginning of the end of the misery

by Latif Masud on Jan 5, 2010 1:09 PM EST reply actions

I agree, I thought...

Matthews was looking better, though I see the Packers play more than the Texans.

by CLF on Jan 5, 2010 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree

Matthews was much better looking, which is likely why the Russian and Bulgarian judges gave Delmas a 5.1 lol

Thank you.

Defensive RotY stat breakdown

I definitely can see a case for Cushing as DRoY, with Delmas as a relatively close 2nd, but Cushing really was lights out. He is going to be a staple for the Texans for a long time. The Texans are like one my secret AFC teams I like for some reason (probably cuz they’ve sucked as bad as us since their inception) so I saw quite a few Houston games this year. Look at the stat lines:

Cushing
134 total tackles (87 solo), 5 sacks, 4 INT’s, 2 FF, 1 safety.
Pro Bowl numbers for any LB.

Delmas
94 total tackles (65 solo), 1 sack, 2 INT’s (1 for TD), Fumble return for a TD, 8 PD, 1 safety
Aside from a low number of INT’s those are phenomenal numbers for a S.

Matthews
50 total tackles (36 solo), 10 sacks, 1 Def. TD, 1 FF, 7 PD
Vastly less tackles than the previous two, but 10 sacks as a rookie bodes very well for the Pack.
Looks to be less versatile than Cushing, but a pass rush monster.

Byrd
45 total tackles (33 solo), 9 INT’s, 11 PD
By far, weakest stat line among the top defensive rookies.
A damn shame that he got consideration over Delmas, even with 9 picks. To me, 9 INT’s < 2 INT’s, 1 sack, 2 TD’s, a safety, and 32 tackles.

But that’s just one man’s opinion.

by Nate D. on Jan 5, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions

But Byrd gets the INT's which is what you want to see

The simple fact is that he plays for a shitty team with a shittier defense that couldn’t stop anyone. How can you give it to someone on this team. IF we were 8 – 8 it would be totally different conversation. Sad but true. How do you give it to someone who’s defense is dead last in almost every statistical defensive category?

Its similar to the Nobel Peace Prize award. How do you give it to Obama when he is conducting 2 wars?? Don’t understand that but politics is not part of POD so I won’t go there.

They might as well of given the Nobel prize to the guy who invented dynamite!

Yeah, say what you will, but 9 INTs are the kind of flashy numbers you want. It probably didn’t hurt that he only played 3/4 of the season. people probably mentally increased the INT number because he was on IR for the end of the season.

by ATL Lion on Jan 5, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

He finished the year tied for most INT's

And incase you didnt know, delmas missed games this year 2

by GOLDIGGAH on Jan 5, 2010 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

hes not alone

James Luarnitis had 107 solo tackles and 9 picks and he got no votes either him and delmas got no respect because they were on losing teams

by The Profiler on Jan 5, 2010 2:02 PM EST reply actions

9 Picks for a linebacker?

That has to be a typo right? Did you mean sacks?

Neither of which have we seen a Detroit Linebacker do in 30 years.

Hometown Heroes

Don’t get awards.
As Lions fans we were treated to another crap season and there’s going to be a tendency to fall in love with what little we had going on.
Delmas is a decent player…might be better in the future but no way he was a DROY. 94 tackles for a safety is great…if any of them were for a loss it would have been better. 2 int. is not a game changer. He’s a bright spot on a poor defense, but recall that most of his tackles were coming after 25 yard gains.
If Detroit had a better record there could be some argument for Delmas, but we weren’t and he’s far from the top tier safety a lot of Detroit fans are seeing.
Cushing deserved the award, with honorable mention to his pharmacist of course.

by MattyZ on Jan 5, 2010 2:51 PM EST reply actions

So 2 TD's and a Safety

Those aren’t game changing plays I see… This defense thing must be something I don’t really have a grasp of.

Please, augment your statement by showing me a stat line or two from some of the top-tier safeties you’re referring to.

by Nate D. on Jan 5, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

One TD kept us in the game against AZ. The safety against the Browns sure helped as well. But they were few and far. I’m not saying that Delmas is a bad player, he’d be a starter for most if not all of the teams in the league but dominant? not even close.

He’s a rookie so I don’t expect him to be lights out, but the guy who won was, all year long.
You can’t point to 3 plays and say that makes him one of the best. The best make plays all year long. Most of the tackles he made were after 25 yard pickups, 7 yarders on 2nd down, 5 yards on 3rd down. I’m glad he made the tackles, proably saving at least 6-7 TD’s on the year. But mix a little realism into the kool aid man. Good, not great. And at safety I’d rather see 9 int’s than a right place right time fumble return coupled with a sack or two.

Again, I’m not knocking Delmas as a bad player, and I should know better than to think there can be optimism without declaring the next great one on the PoD.

by MattyZ on Jan 5, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

I see your point

But you still haven’t done anything but knock what he did.

Have you watched Cushing closely enough to say that his season wasn’t similar? How about Matthews? Jarius Byrd picked 9 passes this year, but other than averaging just under 1 pick a game, he wasn’t consistent in anything else.

My point is that you said he’s not considered ‘top tier’ in the NFL. Here are the starting free safeties in the Pro Bowl’s statistics:

Ed Reed
50 total tackles (42 solo), 3 INT’s (1 TD), 3 FF, 5 PD

Darren Sharper
71 total tackles (51 solo), 0.5 sack, 9 INT’s (3 TD’s), 15 PD

So among the top 2 free safeties in the AFC and NFC, Delmas’ stats are pretty similar. Sharper had a phenomenal season, and was easily the best S in the league, and the only thing he has on Delmas is INT’s, and some passes defensed. Granted those are important stats for a safety and the INT difference is giant, but still. You just cannot convince me that I’m ‘drinking kool-aid’ on Louis Delmas, while he puts up stats akin to the ‘top-tier’ safeties in the league.

With that, I’ve got to go to work. The defense rests, your honor.

by Nate D. on Jan 5, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

chit

I can’t say I’ve seen every game of Cushing or Matthews, but I watch as much of the NFL wrapups as I can, between FOX, ESPN, HBO, all that good stuff and Cushing was a monster, his stats are DPOY worthy.
Delmas is a hard hitter and a pretty sure tackler. I think he’s weaker in coverage than either of the safeties you statlined but he’s a good safety valve.
I think that his 94 tackles are a bit misleading because of the poor play of our secondary (corners let everything by= more tackles in the secondary) and just the defense in general. (More plays getting into the 2nd level=more tackles in the 2ndary)

Sharper, Reed, etc. those guys are feared by OC’s. They are gameplanned against and still manage to pull off big plays despite this. They’re also playing with superior talent around them. And getting the numbers.

I won’t say that Delmas couldn’t achieve this same thing with better players around him but those 2 guys were part of succesful defenses on winning teams.
Troy and Sanders missed most of the season, but have to be included on a list of top tier safeties. I’d love it if LouDel made the list, but he’s not there yet.

I try to be realistic and it can come off pessimistic instead. That doesn’t mean I’m wrong though. Delmas is a long way off of being a feared and dominant safety.

by MattyZ on Jan 5, 2010 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

No wonder

Sorry, 9 picks or 50 tackles.

I’ll take 50 tackles anyday.

by LionInIowa on Jan 5, 2010 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

tackles for loss

Delmas had many tackles for losses this year. He cleaned up on a lot of runs going outside—especially left side for some reason. Just watch the last game against Chicago and you will see what I’m talking about.

In my opinion, poor team defenses generally make good defensive players look bad. If we could get a better pass rush, we’ll see his numbers boosted significantly in pass defense (INTs, passes defensed, FF). Also, disruption by the DL will break up running plays and also makes a safety look really good. our DL simply did not get the job done—makes the DBs and LBs look worse than the really are.

by x$pcents IV on Jan 5, 2010 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

because he was on the Lions

He looks outstanding for the future and has Pro Bowl potential written all over him…. The Lions will get better… if we get better CJ, and Delma could be our first PRO BOWL players?

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

by DINORDO on Jan 5, 2010 3:11 PM EST reply actions

In other years I think he would have been closer

But this year was quite good for defensive rookies. I loved Delmas play this year, he was probably one of our best, but I don’t think he did quite enough for the honour.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
