Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Quick POLL: What do you expect to happen at #1

At this point in time, right after the end of the season, I'm curious to know which way the consensus is leaning in PoD's collective expectations that the player most of us want will still available at pick #2.

There are some of us who are absolutely certain that there is no way in hell St. Louis passes on a potential franchise quarterback with the #1 pick, because a QB is so important and you have to draft one if you don't have one.  Likewise, there are others of us who don't see any possible way the Rams don't draft Ndamukong Suh, because he is such a dominant player and you have to draft somebody this good if you have the opportunity.

Assuming a trade-down doesn't happen and their only reasonable options are Suh or a QB, which player do YOU expect the Rams to take?

Poll
Right now, with the season over, assuming no trade-down occurs and the Rams either take a QB or Ndamukong Suh, which statement best sums up your certainty about whom St. Louis will draft at #1:
The Rams will ABSOLUTELY go QB. There is NO WAY they pass on a potential franchise QB!! St. Louis WILL NOT take Suh.

The Rams will probably go for a QB, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see them take Suh.

I think either outcome is equally likely. I wouldn't be suhprised either way.

The Rams will DEFINITELY draft Suh. They WILL NOT pass on him. He's too good.

I don't know...

is Clausen really a franchise QB? I’ve never been that impressed by him. Then again I was never that impressed by Stafford. So maybe my opinion should be treated as Bizzaro-opinion and the opposite should automatically be done.

Option 2 is for me.

Vick factor

Everyone has to stop and think its not entirely unlikey vick could start for the rams and they could still get a mccoy or lefuere in a later round to develop and still take suh 1st over all

AND THATS THE BOTTOM LINE

Duh

I’ve heard from Rams insiders that they won’t pass up on Suh. I suspect (pre-combine) that Bradford will probably go before Clausen (unless his arm is wrecked). Both are too risky at #1. Suh is a safe guy to pay the 1st pick $$$.

by x$pcents IV on Jan 5, 2010 11:33 PM EST reply actions

So if STL goes Suh

Who is their QB next year? I don’t see them starting the season with the same craptastic tossers they ended this season with. Who is a possible free agent they could make a run for? I hear Vick, but he is not a solution for anyone. Especially STL who I don’t see switching offensive schemes from a pocket pass style to a moving pocket scrambling QB style just for the couple more years Vick might have.

Last year there were some starting QBs available in the off season; Cassel, Cutler. Who is out there next year? What are their options?

by ATL Lion on Jan 6, 2010 9:04 AM EST reply actions

Aside from a big move no one is expecting

Or the potential of grabbing a so-so FA QB, the draft is where it’s at for them. I don’t remember if Bulger was hurt or if they pulled him, but either way, I think he’s going the way of Kyle Boller… The staff seems disenfranchised with him, and I don’t know what they’re gonna tell people when they go into next year with a nobody at QB and try to say they’re in it to win it.

Much like coming to the party without a jimmy hat…

by Nate D. on Jan 6, 2010 9:28 AM EST up reply actions

+1

Once again, Vick is rumored to be going lots of places, and once again, like ATL Lion said, Vick’s not the solution for anyone.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

FA QB's

(Cutler wasn’t a FA, he was traded)

Just glancing through the list even without heed to restricted/unrestricted or any very recent contract status changes, there won’t be too much. But there are a couple younger prospects/projects in free agency that I could see a team like the Rams showing an interest in if they wanted to go that route instead of the draft.

Guys like:
- Jason Campbell (although I doubt he goes anywhere)
- Kellen Clemens
- Tarvaris Jackson
- Sage Rosenfels (Depending on which one the Vikings choose to keep)
- Matt Moore
- Troy Smith
- Brodie Croyle
- Kyle Orton

Other than that, the list is a bunch of guys who have seen better days, or career backups:

- Charlie Batch
- Mark Brunell
- David Carr
- Dullpepper
- Grossman
- Delhomme
- Kitna
- McCown
- Pennington
- Chris Redman

by abnerman on Jan 6, 2010 9:56 AM EST reply actions

Hmmmm....

I like Brodie Croyle and Troy smith…. But I REALLY hope we sign Kitna.

by CLF on Jan 6, 2010 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

redman & moore

have the best shot at being picked up IMO

by londonlion on Jan 6, 2010 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Redman played like crap in Atlanta

I was at that Philly game where they got embarrassed by Vick. Redman was the reason they were beat so soundly. The guy was awful; bad accuracy, bad timing on handoffs, couldn’t sell a play action to save his life, threw into bad coverage. He threw into tight double/triple coverage so much the only reason he didn’t have more interceptions was because his accuracy was so bad.

by ATL Lion on Jan 6, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

No one on that list is going to prove to the fans that they want to win. Cutler and Cassel (while not FAs, were available) were special in that they were not on the market because they failed at being a QB. In fact, they were available because they were successful. Out of your group, I only see Tavaris Jackson and Kyle Orton that fits the bill. I don’t see Orton being let loose, so Jackson is it.

Unlike bringing in Cassel, I don’t see STL selling their fans on Tavaris Jackson being the answer at QB when QB was such a problem for them last year. Even in Detroit, we could at least lie to ourselves and say that Linehan and a slimmed down culpepper would be a good enough tandem for a couple years. They don’t even have that luxury.

The more I consider it, the more I think they will be forced into a QB.

by ATL Lion on Jan 6, 2010 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

absolutely agree

but they need someone to catch the ball that the qb who’s selling seats will be throwing…either way tjack is not the answer as a starter…same goes for j campbell who i can only assume will not be the qb under shannahan, he will draft one too.

by londonlion on Jan 6, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

My opinon

Campbell will be back in Washington
Clemens is a career backup
Jackson stays in Minny. He’s improved alot.
Rosenfels is probably Kellen Clemens’ twin
Matt Moore… is that the guy from Carolina? He’ll stay there.
Troy Smith would be a reach and a half, but maybe
Brodie Croyle hasn’t been able to get it done on two teams
Orton will probably stay in Denver, he did well this year and he and McD have a good rapport.

As for the journeymen (I see alot more possibility in this list)
Batch will be in Pitt til he retires
Same with Brunell in NO
David Carr is a laughingstock in the NFL
Culpepper is done. What a way to re-end his career
Grossman is a possibility. Wasn’t he in the UFL?
Delhomme, also a maybe, but after this year he might be a career backup
Kitna was only starter material on the Lions. Even the Rams aren’t 0-16 bad
McCown…. Josh? No way.
Pennington probably has the best chance. People love accuracy, even at a cost of a big arm.
I personally liked Redman, thought he was Schaub all over again (starter talent as a backup) but I didn’t see much promise out of this year.

I’d say any QB in the draft, especially the best ones, provide more upside and talent than any two or more of these guys put together.

by Nate D. on Jan 6, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not too sure that Campbell will be the QB in Washington next year......

With the hiring of Mike Shanahan, I am fully expecting him to push for the Redskins to draft HIS QB. I think that it just got a lot more likely that the Rams will be pressed to take a QB with their first pick too.

by KDawg on Jan 6, 2010 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

Campbell will be back.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/06/shanahans-comments-on-campbell-and-portis-are-telling/

Shanahan on Jason Campbell: “I’m looking forward to working with him. I love the way Jason handles himself. . . . I’m looking forward to watching every play he’s had in his career. Hopefully his best years are ahead.”

Doesn’t sound like a guy who he’s getting ready to get rid of.

Nate

What would you expect him to say?? Very politically correct answer. who knows if that’s what he’s really thinking.

When someone says they're going to work with someone

It usually means that they’re going to work with them. Sure he could be a complete liar about it, but I don’t speculate on that kind of stuff. I speculate on things that are said, and Shanahan’s track record says he doesn’t mince words. If you want to go on that logic, then you can’t trust anything anyone says ever at a press conference or otherwise, because you never know what they’re really thinking.

by Nate D. on Jan 7, 2010 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't expect him to say....

Hell yes we are looking at drafting a QB…..Jason Campbell can pack his shit, he sucks! Of course he will say he is looking forward to working with him and that he is excited for his future etc etc……it’s the same thing Josh McDaniels said when he took over in Denver (about Cutler).

by KDawg on Jan 7, 2010 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

if the media was making the pick...

…it’d be Suh all the way. But with 3 1/2 months until the draft, I give Clausen a 70/30 chance of going #1 overall. You may dislike Notre Dame, but you have to respect the numbers the kid put up this past year.

The Rams are in a similar position to what the Lions were in last year; they don’t have a quarterback, and with no guarantee of drafting so high again, it’s hard for any front office to pass on a potential franchise QB.

by BriansLions on Jan 6, 2010 10:44 AM EST reply actions

Since ND had no bowl game

We have to wait for the combine and pro days for the media to fall in love with Clausen. They may say differently now, but everyone in the media gets a hard on for a QB. One good day at the combine and they will fall all over themselves picking Clausen as a lock.

by ATL Lion on Jan 6, 2010 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely.........seen it all before

You know where I stand. The Rams take a QB, most likely Clausen.
I voted The Rams will ABSOLUTELY go QB. There is NO WAY they pass on a potential franchise QB!! St. Louis WILL NOT take Suh.

We’re in a great draft position. And yet people still insist on panicking. It’s that pessimistic, impatient, instant-gratification mindset that’s been bred into too many Lions fans. Stop it. Don’t make me slap y’all with a wet fish. Relax. Everything’s fine. We get either Suh or Berry, most likely Suh. Believe. Good things CAN happen to us. We are not cursed (or not cursed any longer, take your pick, lol). Trust the Schwartz. Don’t worry, be happy.
