what we should do and who we should pick

My two cents, if I were drafting today.

(assuming no trade downs and not considering the combine)

my first and second choices for each round and pick if still on the board and

they don't break a leg when they find out we want to draft them !!!

#1 Ndamukong Suh DT - Nebraska / Gerald McCoy DT - Oklahoma
#2 Greg Hardy DE - Mississippi / Corey Wootton DE - Northwestern
#3 Javier Arenas CB - Alabama / Mike Johnson OG - Alabama
#4 Brandon Carter OG - Texas Tech / Akwasi Owusu-Ansah CB - Indiana of PA
#5a Myron Rolle S- Florida State / Joe Thomas OT/OG - Pitt
#5b Joe Thomas OT/OG - Pitt / Dennis Landolt OT - Penn State
#6 Brandon Banks WR - Kansas State / Brandon James RB - Florida
#6? (from Jets for O'Connell) Brandon James RB / Michael Smith RB - Arkansas
(#7 Jacob Hickman C - Nebraska / Shawn Byrnes C - Texas Tech) I don't believe we have a 7th round pick.

2 things

gerald mccoy is not worth a 2nd overall not if berry is on the board and 2 in your 7 point plan I think cribbs could be the guy that can help open up calvin

Cribbs would be a great addition

And I would not be upset if we re-signed him to a 4 year deal for 12 million.

by KDawg on Jan 7, 2010 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

But what if they paid him more?

Why do us fans worry about how much they are paying these guys? That is between the employer and employee. What if they pay him $20 Million? What impact will that have on the Lions? I hope Mayhew and company can manage a payroll and whatever they decide makes sense for the Lions, because I really don’t care how much they get paid, as long as they produce.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 8, 2010 7:20 AM EST up reply actions

I alway think the same thing

Its not my bankbook paying out the payroll.

But if there is a cap anymore, then it does become important to us. If we overpay one guy, then that is less money we have to pay the other guy. You have to have a really good front office to have multiple superstars on your team because for every Peyton Manning you have it means you have to have 3 or 4 other guys making the minimum salary to get under cap.

by ATL Lion on Jan 8, 2010 7:58 AM EST up reply actions

It's not that I care about what he gets paid

It the FACT that he is pissed off in Cleveland because he is not making at least 2.5 million a year! If we want a guy like Cribbs, then we would have to give him at least 2.5 million a year, and I say he is worth at least 3 mill per year. Plus, maybe he would have more incentive to come here if he were offered 12 mill over 4 years.

Once he is here, I could give a shit less what he is paid……but if we want him, we have to get him here first, and THAT involves talking about money!

by KDawg on Jan 8, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

I heard Cribbs has no interest in coming to Detroit

trying to find where I read that. I may have heard it on the NFL network.

Maybe he just meant that he would not go to Detroit for a winter getaway vacation?

I agree with him. I can think of a few nicer places to spend the winter than Detroit.

McCoy?

He isn’t worth a #2?

i am torn between him and Berry still. McCoy has looked pretty good to me.

by x$pcents IV on Jan 8, 2010 2:56 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah

He looked good against BYU, Idaho State, Tulsa, Baylor, and Kansas…..those juggernaut football schools…..but he SUCKED against Texas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State! In reality, even in the games that he “looked good”, he never had more than 5 tackles. For such a “strong and explosive” DT, why did he only have 5 sacks (one in the Sun Bowl) and 32 tackles over 12 games (he did not play vs Miami)?? I agree with everyone who says he is not worth the #2 pick, and I say he is a developmental player at best. I’ve seen him play and I was not impressed….I can’t figure out what the scouts see in him, unless it is potential (which even I see….but I say late 1st or early 2nd round talent…..not top 5 or even top 10).

by GRLion on Jan 9, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

stats

if you evaluate players based merely on statistics you aren’t going to see what the scouts are looking for. IMO solid DT play doesn’t necessarily produce huge numbers of tackles and sacks. It is about disruption, pressure, drawing double/triple teams, causing pile-ups.

let’s not get carried away with stats—you have to watch and breakdown the plays to get a feel for a player.

by x$pcents IV on Jan 9, 2010 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

I did

McCoy looked weak, relied on a quick first step, and dove at the QB’s knees. That won’t work in the NFL (especially with our defense). Just ask Glenn Dorsey.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Jan 9, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

I DID TOO!

I watched him play several times this year…..he is not all that.

by KDawg on Jan 9, 2010 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

absolutely critical

…for NFL interior defense linemen to show quick first step. if he is getting enough penetration in front of the pocket to dive at a QB’s knees, he is doing his job in pass rush. QBs hate inside pressure coming in low when they are trying to step into a pass. He doesn’t need sacks, he needs to get into the QBs face or mind. Just ask Tom Brady and Carson Palmer

One thing that stands out about this guy is his athleticism and body control. He moves around the field like guy that is much smaller. He is 6’4" and 300lb. Look at his body control as a highschooler:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qvo3lUvLwk

He is a top 5 prospect on almost everyone’s board.

DeAngelo Williams is too old

He will be like 27 or 28 by the time the season starts. Why give up such a high pick for a guy that is only going to be good a couple more years. Thirty is the age when RB’s start to go down hill. We are going to spend the next couple years rebuilding, it dont make sense to give up such a high pick for him.

you can find serviceable backs for much cheaper in the NFL…go sign somebody or look later in the draft. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Lions give someone like Clinton Portis or Larry Johnson a shot

Although, I would go get Iupati in the second round. As you said, that position has been a revolving door, and Iupati could very well fix that for them. Other than that, the rest of the picks address our needs perfectly

Yes, he’s smart……smart enough to realize that some guy just ran past him for a TD. I’m smart too, but I can’t play safety in the NFL…..and certainly not in Gunther’s scheme.

Iupati would be a great player and a great fit here.

Why is everybody saying that McCoy is not worth a # 2

I bet you if Suh would have gone pro last year all the people saying that McCoy is not worth a number 2 would have a different opinion. I just do not think that Suh will make it past number one. I like McCoy a lot he reminds me a lot of Shaun Rogers and I think that he would be a great pick up at #2

by lionfan4life on Jan 8, 2010 5:39 AM EST reply actions

I'm basing my comments and opinions off of what I saw with my own two eyes

And that is an over hyped kid who does not play up to his size, who needs time to develop physically (gain 10-15 pounds of muscle), get stronger, and learn better technique to split double teams. Kong Suh is a runaway truck…..he blows up double teams. Big difference (although he could stand to put on 10-15 pounds too…..but when he does, he will be even that much better than McCoy).

by KDawg on Jan 8, 2010 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Not everybody. But yes, there are a lot of people on here who don't like him.

Apparently he is tremendously undersized for a DT [6’ 4" and 298 pounds], has little upper or lower body strength and gets regularly run over and pushed aside on run plays, and is over hyped by all the usual suspects [Kiper, McShay, etc.], and his name is not Suh.

He has played forty games in a row for Oklahoma anchoring one of the best defences in the country for three years running. Is regularly double teamed and still manages to make plays in the backfield. If he had come out last year he likely would have been the first DT taken. But now he sucks. Because he is not named Suh and it is impossible to have two elite DTs in the same draft class.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 8, 2010 7:35 AM EST reply actions

I agree...McCoy could end up being the better of the two.

McCoy has the size or frame. To easily add wieght. And still keep his speed and quickness. Personally, I am not getting all worked over who the Rams will draft. Cause there are two very good DT’s to be taken.

by JCruize on Jan 8, 2010 8:10 AM EST up reply actions

McCoy or Suh are both elite 3-technique tackles in the NFL draft. I would be happy getting either of these guys.

We’ll see how these guys play out at the combine. McCoy is going to surprise with his athleticism. He is also a character guy and plays very hard.

watch this guy dominate against Florida:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Omhi5KjPW3s

body control in HS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qvo3lUvLwk&feature=related

i just think we need to wait until combine to make a decision about McCoy or Berry. I like either one of these guys right now.

by x$pcents IV on Jan 13, 2010 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

No way

I have watched him play too, with my eyes, and he was not getting double teamed, not doing much of anything. Now if you’re looking at a good DT not named Suh, I can tell you that I like Robinson out of North Carolina. That guy has a motor and plays like a mad man. I’d rather take him than McCoy. Course that’s part of the problem too. People hang there hat far too often on “potential”. Remember the old saying, “Your potential’s going to get me fired son?”

Potential = Darko Milosovich
Potential = Gerald McCoy.

Thank you.

by TCLion on Jan 8, 2010 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

McCoy or Dorsey

What if 1) McCoy is really good, or what if 2) Dorsey just doesnt fit the scheme in KG and is really good himself?
1) We could trade down to TB and get their round 2 pick: we pick either McCoy or Morgan or Berry and in the second round a DE or CB and a the “Eraser” Linehan wants, round 3 a really good OG and we will dramatically improve.
2) Dorsey is good and Gunther knows it, so we trade Avril or Peterson and middle to low pick to KC. We then make the trade with TB as mentioned. We allready have a better DT (Dorsey) so now with the third pick we can take the luxury of either Berry or Morgan, and in the second round similiar to scenario 1)
What is the use of all this? It is a dream scenario of course only under the condition that Mayhew and Schwartz consider Dorsey or McCoy as really good player, but IF they are, we could just pick up an early second round pick, which can be extremely valuable as we saw in this draft.

by lillchillonhill on Jan 8, 2010 8:36 AM EST reply actions

If you ask me.....

McCoy and Dorsey are very very comparable……Dorsey was over hyped and McCoy is being over hyped…….Dorsey has been a developmental player and I think McCoy is a developmental player…..Dorsey has been labeled as a bust by some and McCoy has potential bust written all over him (my opinion). Neither player warranted the talent to be picked in the top 10 of the first round…..but both come from BIG NAME Universities from BIG NAME football conferences (Big 12 and SEC), and the media eats up the propaganda and spreads it like disease! Case and point is how everyone in Texas thinks that Colt McCoy is Jesus reborn in a football uniform. Does that make it true? Regional love for players does not mean that they have the talent to be top 10 picks in the draft. A coach or AD of a big name school is not going to tell the media that their player is marginal or developmental! They want everyone to think that he is spectacular so that 1) the player gets a ton of media attention and gets drafted high, and 2) so that the school can use that player’s attention and success as a means to draw in new talent in with their recruiting classes! Kids want to go to schools that provide the coaching and attention that will give them the best chance to make it to the NFL and get paid the big money.

The hype machine I call it…..and it is all about the Benjamins baby! I disregard what the media says….I see what I see and I form my own opinion.

by KDawg on Jan 8, 2010 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

And Suh is not being hyped at all. LOL

Like I said before, if the Lions end up drafting McCoy after Suh is gone a few peoples heads will explode on this site.

Should be fun.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 9, 2010 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with KDawg

In terms of size and strength, Gerald McCoy (6-4, 297) is more like Glenn Dorsey (6-1, 297) than Sean Rogers (6-4, 350+, depending on what he had for lunch). Gerald McCoy would be a light snack for Sean Rogers.

Glenn Dorsey doesn’t fit the scheme here.
Gerald McCoy doesn’t fit the scheme here.
I’m not impressed with McCoy’s overall play.
Initially Eric Berry got a lot of hype…..now Suh is getting a lot of hype….but they’re both that good. Gerald McCoy is overhyped, IMO. He’s not that good. I’ve seen it with my own 2 eyes.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Jan 9, 2010 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

no, actually he does...

McCoy is perfectly suited as a 3-technique tackle. Hill is a 1-technique tackle (cocked NT). This is about right for our scheme as far as I know.

Sean Rogers did not bring it on about half his plays. McCoy has no attitude problems and plays hard on every down.

by x$pcents IV on Jan 13, 2010 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

I sometimes think that will happen

The Rams pick Suh (nuts to logic!) and we pick McCoy. I can imagine the uproar here.

Love the Myron Rolle pick

But I would go OG instead of DE in round #2. I think it’s more critical, particulalry if we do land Suh with our #2 overall pick.

by NYCLionsfan on Jan 8, 2010 10:08 AM EST reply actions

I like Mike Iupati as a 2nd Round pick at OG

If he’s gone however, I take the next best PLAYER in Round 2, not the next best GUARD. BPA. We deal in specific players in this league. That’s why they have names on the backs of their jerseys.

Hate the Myron Rolle pick. Too big and slow to fit what Schwartz says he wants on THIS defense (another interchangable Left Safety/Right Safety 6-0, 195-205, like Delmas and the safeties he had in Tennessee). Schwartz wants a safety with coverage and ball skills, necessary in a defense where the LB’s are off blitzing a lot (the pieces of a defense are interdependent, when will people realize that???). Rolle can’t do that in the NFL at his size/speed. Rolle is smart enough to see WR’s run by him for TD’s if he plays HERE. He doesn’t fit HERE. He’s a better fit on some OTHER team. Schwartz won’t want him HERE.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Jan 9, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

I ask myself that same question GRL.

Apply that same logic to our DTs. You seem to think that Detroit needs/wants two run pluggers. We have that now and get no pass rush up the middle. A penetrator like McCoy or Price or even Odrick would give us that flexibility and ability.

I agree with you about the safety position. I don’t like having one guy as a cover player and the other a run supporter. They should be capable in both areas. I could understand if we spent the second pick on Berry or the #34 pick on another outstanding safety [Thomas, Burnett, etc.]
