My View of the Lions as a team

Ok i have some serious questions about the Lions, and basically i am not happy with anyone on this team, including Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford, to me the only bright spot this year was on Defense with Levy,Follett and Delmas.

Star-divide

Defense:

Defensive Tackle: Sammie Lee Hill, look i love him, but a bunch of you are calling him a bright spot, he isnt, he is a great young talent that we believe will develop in to a great DT for us. Lets not blind ourselves because of this, he had 14 Tackles 12 Assists 0 Sacks 0 Fumbles. Is that really good? We are blinded, truth is Phillip Buchanon had as many sacks as all our DTs combined (Joe Cohen). I say keep Cohen,Cohen, and Hill and look to Draft other DTs, truth is we don't know what Sammie Lee Hill will be.

Defensive End:Cliff Avril,Jason Hunter, and Copeland Bryan all showed flashes, Hunter and Avril each finished with 5 Sacks and Bryan had 1 then got injured. Why is it we are all screaming DE in this Draft? I think if had a little pressure on the Inside Hunter,Avril and Bryan will be very good ends. I wouldn't Draft a DE unless its a steal.

Linebacker: Is it even a thought in our minds that we want Larry Foote back? I mean he lead us in Tackles and had 2 Sacks, oh but we have Deandre Levy, umm who the heck cares? Look he is great but let the rotation continue and let the young guys continue to develop, Peterson also always Levy to be on the field at times if he moves to DE

Cornerback: Henry and Buchanon were exactly what i said i would be, this years Kelly and Bodden, that being said, keep them both resign Henry (If he will come back) we are short at CB and could use them both as backups, i also like Witherspoon and some of the other late pickups at CB, but we one thing we need to do is draft a CB maybe even 2. oh yeah Will James, he sucks cut him and never mention his name again, please

Safety: Louis Delmas, yep thats about it, other than him everybody sucks cut all of them and find new guys, ok maybe keep Bullocks and Simpson, but still they should be watching their backs. Oh and Dennis Northcutt i would love it if we didn't make that trade. Draft Delmas a Strong Safety to go along with him.

Offense:

Offensive Line: Backus is bad, but Schwartz likes him,Cherilus is another 1st round Bust (Move him to guard?) Jansen is aging but has played RT for a long time, Raiola is a little pest and i hate him, but i guess he produces, the guards suck plain and simple. basically an OG is a Big, Fat, Somewhat Atheletic Guy who pushes people around, don't draft one in the 2nd or 3rd round, please. but do draft one, somewhere.

Quarterback: Stafford is No 1, Stanton is No 2, resign Ramsey or find another 3rd QB

Running Back: Kevin Smith gets way to many touches, please get a real RB, please. I like Johnathon Dwyer and others later on in this draft class, stay away from the top (I like Spiller but not at No 2 overall)

Wide Reciever: Calvin Johnson is it at this spot, get him some help, perferably in the slot.

Tight End: Pettigrew is a anchor for a good young team, i like Gronkowski too, bye bye Fitzsimmons maybe even Heller too

Disagree with you on SLH

He did what was asked of him, why cant we be happy with his production? The fact that he was productive for how raw he is, is actually incredible.

Look at Hawaii 5-O, he was a “project” and he wasnt even able to get on the field let alone be productive. Granted he was drafted by “HWMNBN”, but Marinelli is considered one of the best d-line coaches in the NFL and he couldnt do anything with him.

Stats do not reflect on the DT position, especially in this defense. When his job is to clogg the lanes and force double teams. The DE, LB’s are left to make the plays.

He did very well for his first year.

Yes but you are honestly going to sit here and tell me

That Sammie Lee Hill produced enough that we only should draft one DT? I don’t think so. 1 Sack from the whole group of Defensive Tackles, we are putting no pressure on the QB from the Inside. Build the line through this Draft, with all the DT Talent in this Draft we could go get 2 first round talents on our Offensive line. Besides a Rotation of Defensive Tackles is a very good thing to have. You are telling me you would rather us Draft Suh and a OG then have us Draft Suh and one of the DTs that fall out of the first round? Yes CB or RB or WR are much need, but if a Defensive Tackle is by far the Best player on the board, i say take him

Never sais we should only draft one DT

you said “but a bunch of you are calling him a bright spot, he isnt”

I simply am saying that he was, he was a steal from a small school and he did everything asked of him plus one. During the off-season it was a general census that he the only PT he was going to get was during the preseason. That he was a project, well he started for us and was productive. How is that not a bright spot?

Personally.....

I think he played pretty good for a rookie out of a Division 2 school…..however, I tend to agree with JMW that he wasn’t that much of a bright spot. His play was surprising for a rookie out of a Division 2 school….so I guess that can be called a bright spot…..but in the big picture, not so great.

I do believe that Suh would make SLH (and the rest of the D-line) a whole lot better. Suh will either draw double teams on every play, or he will be blowing up the pocket and in the backfield. When he is doubled, all it take is for Hill to get a little quicker and stronger in the offseason and he will benefit from Suh’s play. If we can get Suh, I think we might be just fine with what we have at DT…..however, I would not be upset if we drafted 2.

by KDawg on Jan 8, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty much my thoughts.

Hill was bogged down by bad play in the other DT spot. Put Suh or another great DT next to him and I think he will play much better. That and another good offseason in the weight room. He may never be a pro-bowler but he will be a great complement next to Suh.

Plus, players typically improve the most between their rookie year and 2nd year

SLH came a long way his rookie year. Give him a chance to continue to improve. He was just a rookie. Once again, the lesson is PATIENCE.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

I side with you Leapin Lion

I thought Hill done well for what he was drafted as.

also

My prediction Rams take Clausen in the first round Tate in the 2nd, they need to get Weapons to surround Stephen Jackson, plain and simple, Plus Clausen and Tate have Instant Chemistry

Interesting thought JMW

However, Golden Tate is listed as one of the top 20 draft prospects this year…..he might not fall to round 2.

you cant

preface a post with

and not follow it up with any contributory pieces of information, you just listed things.

Stafford and Johnson

Johnson was playing Soft at the end of the year, but i am not going to blame him for that, he is the only one basically assured a spot so why risk injury. Stafford is young and is learning, and really i am not upset with him but with Linehan, Way to many Screens and Short Quick reads, we drafted Stafford for his ability to make plays and because he has a rocket arm, why not cut him loose? To many interceptions by Linebackers and Defensive Lineman, cut the man Loose, he is a great talent and has shown why we drafted him, just please cut him loose

by JMW62689 on Jan 8, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

In all fairness...

A significant reason that it didn’t look like Stafford was “cut loose”, is not because Linehan’s playcalling mandated screens and dump-offs.

It was because the opposing defenses were consistently getting to Stafford before the longer routes could develop, and he had to get rid of the ball.

He didnt have anyone to catch the ball

Even Schwartz said it, CJ was getting TRIPLE teamed. How many drops did Lions WR’s have this year? Thats why the TE, and RB’s factored into the offense so much as receivers.

Ya, I gotta disagree with you

Sammie Lee Hill is a beast. We drafted him to stop the run and he did just that. Look at how well he did against Cincinnati, he had 5 tackles, and we held Ced-Ben to under 4 yards per carry. Yes Hill is better suited for NT where he can be a one-gap, dominant defender, but he did pretty good at DT this year. Had Hill gone to a big-time school, he would have been a first round pick, but he went to Stillman College, so he was a 4th round pick. We knew he was going to be a project, but another year in an NFL strength training program, and this guy will be a beast. He reminds me a lot of NTs such as Shaun Rogers, Casey Hampton, Vince Wilfork, and Jamal Williams. I’m excited to see how this guy turns out.

Cherilus

We should definitely consider moving Cherilus to guard. He would make a very exceptional LG, and with his aggressiveness, he could create some big gaps for whoever our future RB is to run through. His pass blocking is not good enough to be an OT, but he could certainly do well at LG. I think the coaching staff should consider it.

They won't

Schwartz’s actions and recent comments have shown he values continuity on the OL.

Wow, that agreeing thing didn’t last long, lol.

I agree we don't need a DE we need SUH

or another great DT but I think we need another qb other than ramsey maybe a leftwich will be available ramsey is a joke anymore he isn’t someone I want on my roster but I agree drew should be backup

Maybe I'm just hugely optimistic

But I thought they’re were a few bright spots, mainly from the rookies. Hill done more than I expected, as well as Levy. Delmas was a beast, Stafford showed the flashes of brilliance we expected, even Grew was coming along toward the end. There are things to be optimistic about.
