The Weekend Spotlight - Week 6 Edition
Good Afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome back to another edition of the Weekend Spotlight (formerly known as The Saturday Night Spotlight). I am your host, KDawg. The sixth installment of my weekly series has the Detroit Lions paired up against the New York Giants, on the road in East Rutherford, NJ, at Meadowland Field. Coming off of a huge victory over the Rams, and officially our first win of the season, I am once again getting ramped up for this game. I believe that we are at a crossroads for this game, and if the Lions can pull off an upset this weekend it will speak volumes about the fact that the Lions ARE for real. The Lions are now 1-4 on the season, and it is clear that our team is no longer the whipping boy of the league. With 5 weeks of the regular season already behind us, once again I will reveal who I believe will be the key players, on the Lion's offense and defense, for a Lion VICTORY! I would be lying to all of you, and myself, if I did not say that it looks like an uphill battle for this game, as we will almost certainly be without Calvin Johnson in addition to Matt Stafford. I would also guess that DeAndre Levy will sit out again this week. As usual, I will provide you with the logic behind the reasoning for my picks, including stats. The Giants are clearly in a different league than the Rams, likely in the same echelon as the Bears, Eagles, Vikings, and Packers, but VICTORY can still be ours, and I'll tell you why and how as the WS W6E begins after the jump...
While it is a given fact that we are all jubilant over the big win against the Rams last week, it is paramount that we the fans are not the only ones who should put things back into perspective this week. The Lions can NOT settle for the good vibe feelings that they must have over beating St. Louis, but rather they have to put that win behind them (just like the prior losses) and look forward to the beast that they must face this week. The Giants are no joke. They are not the Rams, and the Lions can not allow the success against the Rams to manipulate their actions on the field this week. They are going to have to play an even more disciplined game, both offensively and defensively, if they are to have any hope of beating Eli Manning and company. The Giants run a base 4-3 defense, led by Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Michael Boley, and Keith Bullock, as members of a front 7 that has combined for 19 sacks (10 against the Bears) this season. Their secondary is also quite solid with Corey Webster (who had an INT against the Texans last week), Terrell Thomas (who had an INT in week 1 vs the Panthers and had another INT against Chicago in week 4), Antrel Rolle, and Kenny Phillips (who also had an INT week 1 vs the Panthers).
The Giants defense ranks #1 in the league in total defense, allowing just 19.6 points per game and an average of 244,6 offensive yards per game. Their defense has also forced 10 fumbles and recovered 50% of those. On the bright side, their defense has also committed 37 penalties for 305 yards (the team, as a whole, imploded one week for an NFL record 33 personal fouls in one game). The Giant's defense ranks #1 in the league against the pass, allowing just 146 yards passing per game, 5 passing TDs, and an opposing QB rating of only 67.9 with a 54.7% completion percentage while grabbing 6 INTs. They are also ranked 9th in the league against the run, allowing just 493 rushing yards against, with a 3.5 average YPC and 4 rushing TDs. Shockingly, the Lions are ranked 17th in the league in total offense, with an average of 25.2 PPG, 332 YPG, but they have also committed a league leading 48 penalties on offense, for 338 yards, and they have fumbled 8 times, losing half of those, for a +3 turnover ratio. After the win against St. Louis last week, the Lions are now ranked 6th in the league in passing, with 1250 passing yards, 250 YPG passing, a 61.9% completion percentage, 8 passing TDs, and 7 INTS. The Lions have only allowed 9 sacks, which puts them in the top 10 in the league for sacks allowed. However, they are also ranked 27th in the league in rushing, with just 410 rushing yards(+89 from last week), a 3.6 YPC (-0.1 from last week) average, and 4 rushing TDs (+0).
Offensively, I think the keys to a win against the Giants will be whether or not we can run the ball well and whether or not we can keep Shaun Hill in an upright, standing position. I would not bet on Shaun Hill passing for 200 yards in this game, especially without Calvin Johnson in the mix. Hill is going to be forced to check down often in this game, and I see Brandon Pettigrew, Tony Scheffler, and Jahvid Best getting a majority of the looks in the passing game. I also see an increased workload coming for Kevin Smith this week, as I do not feel that Jahvid Best will be able to carry the full load against the Giants. We are really going to need Nate Burleson to step up big in this game, and I believe his performance will be THE key for the Lions on offense for this game. IF Burleson can get open quickly, catch the ball, and make plays in space, then I believe it may give our offense a chance to move the ball effectively, even without Calvin Johnson. If Burleson is locked down all game long, then the Lions will be forced to rely on the TEs and RBs, in a dink and dunk fashion, to get anything done. I would not place any bets that Bryant Johnson or Derrick Williams will accomplish much of anything in this game, and all hope will be lost anyway if our offensive line fails to protect Shaun Hill. If Hill is pressured, hurried, and hit all day long, we can expect a ton of bad throws, INTs, and a sputtering offense in general. If we can not set up our passes, then our only hope will be that Jahvid Best goes off this week on the ground, or that he can have another Philadephia like performance in the passing game.
Defensively, the Lions are facing an offense with a LOT more weapons than last week. Eli Manning is a very good QB who can make all of the throws and break down defenses, Hakeem Nicks has seemingly exploded onto the scene recently, Mario Manningham has previously proven the fact that he can get the job done, and Steve Smith is always solid. Ahmad Bradshaw has been getting it done on the ground for the Giants all year, and the combo of Bradshaw and Jacobs is STILL a sleeping giant that seems to be rousing from a long slumber. The Giants are 9th in the league in passing, averaging 247.8 passing yards per game. Eli Manning has thrown for 1239 yards on 64.4% completions, with 8 TDs and 8 INTs, and has also only been sacked 9 times. The Giants also rank 11th in the league in rushing, averaging 4.5 YPC, with 651 total rushing yards, 130.2 YPG rushing, and 5 rushing TDs. Our Lions are 24th in the league against the pass, allowing opposing passers an 83.2 passer rating on average, 61.8% completions, 235.4 passing yards per game, 7.6 yards per catch, and 8 passing TDs vs 7 INTs. On the bright side, the Lions have sacked opposing QBs 14 times, which ranks 6th in the league, so our defensive line IS doing an excellent job of creating pressure on opposing QBs. The Lions rank 26th in the league against the run, allowing 666 total rushing yards, a 4.8 YPC average, and 133.2 rushing yards per game with 5 rushing TDs. The Lions are particularly bad at allowing explosion plays, as they are tied for the league's longest rushing TD of the year, allowing an 80 yarder by Adrian Peterson, and they own the league's longest passing TD of the year with an 89 yard TD against them by Matt Forte in week 1.
This is how I see it. The Giants are going to do what they have been doing on offense all year long. They are likely to pass for at least 247.8 yards, and they are likely to run for at least 130.2 yards, since the Lions allow almost exactly that much on average, and those are the average numbers for the Giants. The only way that we can beat the Giants is if we can either 1) Stop them from passing the ball, or 2) Stop them from running the ball. We are not going to stop both. IF we can stop the Giants from running the ball, AND we can hold them to less than 100 yards rushing, with no rushing TDs, WHILE we ALSO hold them to less than 300 yards passing, THEN we have a shot a beating them this week. That being the case, it is going to be ultimately important that our front 7 play a very good game. They did well to hold Steven Jackson to 114 yards rushing and no rushing TDs last week, but Jackson and Bradshaw are completely different running backs. Jackson is a power back, who rarely bounces outside and likes to ram it up the middle (no pun intended), while Bradshaw is a shifty, speedy back who can hit the hole very quickly and run between the tackles, while also getting to the edge on the outside. I do not see Brandon Jacobs going off against us, as he is nowhere near the caliber of running back as Steven Jackson or any of the other backs we have faced, but Ahmad Bradshaw is going to be tough to contain.
I see the Giants trying Jacobs up the middle, to spell Bradshaw and keep him fresh, but I see him getting 3-4 yards at best (hopefully less) per attempt. Bradshaw will test our defense in the middle also, but he will use his speed to try to beat us around the corners. Our DEs and OLBs are going to be the key to stopping him, if he is to be stopped. The DEs are going to have to stay home on running downs, and attempt to funnel Bradshaw back inside where the strength of our defense lies. If they over pursue, then Bradshaw will be able to break off big gains on the outside unless our OLBs are ready and waiting. The corners and safeties are also going to have to do a good job in run support, or we might see a couple of explosion plays by Bradshaw for long runs. If, and when, Bradshaw runs to the outside, when the DEs can not funnel him back to the inside, then they absolutely MUST string him out in the flats and allow out OLBs to make plays. In turn, our OLBS MUST make plays against Bradshaw IN THE FLATS! There has been far too many attempted arm tackles by the Lions this year, and they need to wrap Bradshaw's legs up and take him down. If our DEs can effectively funnel Bradshaw inside or flatten out running plays to the outside, and if our OLBs can make plays on him in the flats while our interior defensive line and MLB can make plays in the middle (with solid support in both aspects by the CBs and Ss), then we may have a chance to shut Bradshaw and Jacobs down and make Eli Manning beat us in the air.
I know that is a lot of IFs...but IF that happens, and the Giants are forced to throw the ball to beat us, then the key player on defense this week will be Chris Houston. I think we are going to see a lot of single back, 3 wide sets from the Giants on passing downs, with Steve Smith moving to the slot and Mario Manningham going outside in his place. That means we will be playing the nickle defense a lot, which means that we will see Houston, Smith, and Wade all in the game at the same time. Personally, I would much rather see Wade in the nickle slot, with Smith and Houston on the outside matching up against Manningham and Hakeem Nicks, but we may very well be better off with Alphonso Smith in the slot against Steve Smith, with Wade on the outside against Manningham. Chris Houston will be charged with the task of stopping Hakeem Nicks, and THAT is the key to a Lion victory this week if we can stop the run first. Of course the Giants also have Kevin Boss, so our linebackers and safeties are going to have to do their best to stop him from beating us over the middle as well. If it plays out as it has so far this year, Wade will match up against Manningham, and Alphonso Smith will play as the nickle back against Steve Smith. I do believe this will be our best chance at containing the Giants against the pass, but everything is going to hinge on whether or not Chris Houston can stick with Hakeem Nicks, and whether or not the Lions are able to stop the run. Again, EVERYONE on our defense has to step up and play decent football in order for us to beat ANY team, and this week is no exception to that rule.
In summation, the Lions once again have to stop the opponent's feature back from running all over them, and they have to stop three very good WRs and a potentially great QB from ripping them to shreds. It would most certainly help if they could pressure, hurry, hit and sack Eli Manning on Sunday, as he has been known to make mistakes under pressure as well. Offensively, the Lions have to establish a consistent running game, keep Shaun Hill on his feet, and allow him time to find the open man. The Lions simply can not afford the stupid penalties this week either, and they are going to have to play a well disciplined game to beat the Giants. Here is to the hope that the referees do not help the Giants win, and that the Lions continue to play solid football like they did against Chicago, Philly, Green Bay, and St. Louis. Here is to the hope that the injury to CJ will not stop our offense from scoring and effectively moving the ball, and that our defense can hold the Giants to less than 100 yards rushing with 0 rushing TDs. If the Lions can even make the Giants somewhat one dimensional on offense, while playing solid defense against the run, then I believe we have a good chance to beat them in their house. Good post
Nate is an interesting pick for the key offensive player. I think the RB combo of Best/Smith will be the key to open things up for Burleson and the TEs.
Chris Houston is another interesting pick. I can understand why and I know you always try to pick out 1 player while I pick out a position group, but I’m going to pick Suh/Williams/Hill rotation as the key this weekend. The Lions MLB situation is unreliable and the Giants OTs are pretty good so the DTs have to play disiplined and read the play quickly to stop the run and pressure Eli. I think the Giants OTs could negate the Lions DEs, but I think the Giants interior O-line can be exploited.

You know...
It’s funny that you said “The Lions MLB situation is unreliable”. I was just reading over an old thread where I was arguing that Levy should not be a lock at MLB, and that we should consider Landon Johnson at MLB before we simply hand the reigns to Levy. On one hand, I think I was right…Levy is not bog enough or strong enough to take the beating he gets at MLB, and as such he is getting banged up a lot. However, Landon Johnson has not exactly lit the world on fire in his performances at MLB this year. He has not done a terrible job, but he has certainly not been a standout either. That said I still think Levy should go back to ROLB, where he shined in place of Sims last season, and that we should either stick with Johnson in the middle, or we should be looking for a stop gap replacement at MLB for the rest of the year. After this season, then I think drafting a true MLB would be a very smart move. Levy can play ROLB, and play it well…definitely better than Zach Follet is playing that position. Can Levy play MLB better than Stephen Boyd? As good as Stephen Boyd? As good as Paris Lennon? Well, it is really hard to say considering he can’t stay on the field. We need a durable guy at MLB, and unfortunately it looks like Levy can’t take the pounding.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
LEVY CAN'T take the pounding...????
I guess that means Delmas can’t take the pounding at Safety.
I’ll agree that LB is a major need this off season… but to equate pulled groins and even hamstring injuries to an inability to take a pounding is laughable.
Not looking for a fight, but that’s where I disagree.
Where is he?
Sitting out…that’s all I am saying. Where is Delmas? He’s playing.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Levy didn't get hit by Julius Peppers on his blindside either...
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Yeah, I'm with KDawg on this one
Levy has shown nothing to prove he’s a starting-caliber NFL MLB. Some flashes last year in limited play, along with some intangibles and things that people like to see (he ‘flows to the ball’, etc) are not enough to prove to me a guy who has been on the field for one game this year has what it takes to lock down the ‘quarterback’ position of the defense. Draft a guy high next year, or trade for someone.
Delmas's injury occurred before Levy's, he has had more time to heal.
Levy hasn’t had a chance to show what he can do yet. Once he get’s that chance this argument will become moot.
I remember that
and I totally agree with you on moving Levy back to the outside. The Lions just re-signed Vinny Ciurciu and he has always been pretty decent against the run. Vinnie might be the stopgap mike you’re talking about at least in the run-stopping sense.
I’m hoping the Lions are thinking of drafting a true MLBer fairly early in the upcoming draft.

Me too
I am torn between what is more important at this point….a 1st round MLB like Greg Jones or a 1st round corner like Prince Amukamara.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
My only issue with Jones
again is his size….he is a very active defender, but can he take a beating? IDK…
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
So he was 215-220 before?
He is listed at 236 in some places and 230 in others…
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I heard one of the commentators mention it...
During the Wisconsin game…
That instead of going into the NFL, he added 15lbs in the offseason with a strict regimate in order to adjust his game for the next level.
The other kid next to him… name escapes me… is a beast also.
I got caught up in the Levy discussion...and then you popped in on Greg Jones...lol
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Impressive
The MSU website lists him as 6-1 240…
If that is the case, then it makes my decision as to what is more important even tougher…
I wonder if JP would play better next to a guy from MSU, than he did when Foote was here?
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Yeah... just checked...
I was going to say… it looks as though he broke into the 40s.
Personally, I’d like to see him takeover petersons’ spot….lol
That Gordon kid would be a nice OLB concelation as a 4th-6th round pick.
The knock on Jones
Is his closing speed. James White of Wisconsin was able to break a couple of long runs by bouncing it to the outside. And run by Jones. His 40 time will hurt him at the combine. And maybe just enough to knock him into the second round. But his instints and tackling are off the chart. Probably just alot of wishful thinking on my part. But I would love for him to fall into the 2nd. And as far as Gordon goes. He is just a smaller Dizon right now. Playing around 228lbs. But Dizon got bigger with some time. So can Gordon.
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
I think you gotta go with the potential shutdown corner over MLB in the 1st rd
there will be some damn good MLB available in the 2nd rd
In life, a man is either the hammer or the anvil. Ndamukong Suh is both

I am also starting to think we do not need the prototypical stud linebacker in this system
With the DLine being primarily responsible for rushing the passer we need LBs that are better at run stuffing and coverage and those can be found after the first round.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
LBers drop in the draft
David Harris, Paul Posluzny, James Lauranitis all fell to the 2nd rd.
I’ve seen quite a few mocks allready having Greg Jones from MSU sliding to the 2nd. Ya never know.

Agreed
Good LB’s can be found in the 2nd or 3rd. Corner’s are tougher.

The thing is
Scwartz has said multiple times they drafted Levy to be our MLB. He did just as well last season at MLB as he did OLB (IMO) and he’s great at sniffing out the run. So unless he doesn’t progress like he had been or there is just a lights out MLB available in the draft when we pick, I think he stays there. Plus, you don’t want a big MLB in this system. You need a MLB with range…
RA
Range and durability
I agree with you that we need a guy with range in the middle, but we do not want a guy who is under 240 lbs that can’t stay on the field in the middle either. Yeah, they drafted Levy to play MLB….but so what? If the guy is better suited to play OLB, and he CAN play that position better than MLB, then does it make any sense to be bull headed and play him at MLB instead of OLB, just because that is what you drafted him for?
The middle linebacker’s job is to stop runs between the tackles, and watch the entire field to see the play develop. On pass plays, the linebackers’ responsibilities vary based upon whether a man or zone coverage is called. In a zone coverage, the linebackers will generally drop into hook zones across the middle of the field. However, some zones will send the outside linebackers into the flats (area directly to the left and right of the hash marks, extending 4-5 yards downfield). In a man-to-man call, the “Sam” will often cover the tight end with help from a safety over the top, while at other times, the “Sam” and “Will” will be responsible for the first man out of the backfield on their side of the center, with the “Mike” covering if a second man exits on that side of the field.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linebacker#Middle_linebacker_.28MLB.29
So exactly how much “range” does a middle linebacker really have to have? I dare say we would be better off with a solid run stopping MLB like Stephen Boyd or Chris Spielman in the middle, and let the OLBs be the guys with “range” on passing downs. Urlacher is a big slow bastard at 6’4" 258 lbs (well…4.6 40 isn’t terribly slow, but slower than a 4.4 or 4.5 anyway), and he still has the necessary range to be one of the best in the business at MLB. He has 18 career INTs and 66 career pass deflections over 11 years, and he is notorious for stopping the run, which is what a MLB is supposed to do. Urlacher has been very durable until more recently. That is the type of guy we need in the middle…a hard nosed run stopper, who is big enough to take a beating, and fast enough to cover over the middle.
I think Levy is a good linebacker, don’t get me wrong. He will do what he is asked to do, as hard and as often as humanly possible. However, in my opinion he is 10-20 pounds too light to play MLB. He started 8 games at ROLB in his rookie year, he never got hurt, and he played at a very high level for a rookie. He started 2 games at MLB in the same season, and he played admirably. Now he is the starting MLB…and after 1 start and 2 tackles, he is on the sideline…I just don’t like it, and I think he is a better fit at ROLB.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Weak.
Your same argument can be made with regards to Stafford… only you’d get shit thrown at you for bringing it up…lol.
We can not improve ourselves by putting Stafford at a different position...
Or else I would make the argument.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
apparently...
There is no better OLB on the team other than Follett… you’d think that would negate your argument….lol.
Umm
Levy is a better OLB than Follet…lol
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Which is why he would be MLB until we get a new one
And Landon has played better at MLB than Follet at ROLB in my opinion. So this is how I break it down;
ROLB: Levy>Follet>Johnson
MLB: Levy>Johnson>Follet
Since Levy is a better ROLB than Follet, and since Johnson is a better MLB than Follet, it makes sense to me to move Levy back to ROLB, and let Johnson play stop gap in the middle. Zach can be relegated back to special teams and backup OLB.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
IMHO
this is really simple JP > everyone else on our LB position and he is not probably not going to be here long term. We need LBs are all positions and all depths.
Our inability to stop the run this year, to me, makes that abundantly clear.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
Correct.
Seems like Follett is just “filling in”… as to where he needs to start making plays.
Almost an interception isn’t an interception….
Still early.
With regards to Levy… He hasn’t been ABLE to “show anything”. How anyone can make a decision… AND ARGUE IT… based on how he played WLB is beyond me.
Levy has shown potential
but it was situation and limited last season playing behind Foote. He needs to rest and heal up. No more of this rushing him back too fast shit anymore. Let him heal up fully so he can put a few games together and we can get a true look at him as a starting MLB. That way we have an idea if we need to find a starting MLB this off season.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
+1
I was just thinking the same thing earlier when I was gushing on another thread about Alphonzo being a playmaker……Follet while a big hitter does not look like a playmaker, at least up to this point.

He is really young yet, first year out there.
That has to be taken into consideration.
Then there is the scheme and this is something about JP that has been a bit frustrating for me as well. JP made his all pros as a rushing LB stacking up sacks. Because the scheme is built on the front four being responsible for most of the pressure on the QB he is limited in that dimension of his game. I can’t help but think this is limiting Follett as well.
Something good can be taken away from this limitation the scheme puts on our LBs. Without a real need for them to rush the passer we can concentrate on them being better run stoppers and in coverage. Those type of LBs are earlier to find in the draft and free agency than the stat filling pash rushing LBers.
As usual, this is just my opinion.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
Nice opinion....
I’m not a stat watcher, stats can be misleading, especially if your watching for sacks from the LB’ers.
Now tackles for losses might be a better indication of what these linebackers are doing for the D, and I believe Zack has been a tad slow on picking up that.
We shall see.

As far as the injury that hurt the linebacking group
was/is not Levy’s injury. But Dizon’s injury.

not knocking Follett. I think he is getting better. But I was really looking forward to seeing the bigger, stronger Dizon.

My key's to wining
As Kdawg said keeping Hill up right, and not turning the ball over and lastly scoring off turn overs. Eli has been terrible protecting the ball, if we get 2 turnovers we must score on those take aways.
"as we will almost certainly be without Calvin Johnson"
im not giving up on megatron yet, he did catch some balls today which he didnt do yesterday.

I hope he plays
But he injured the AC joint in his shoulder, so range of motion is going to be the determining factor. Being a former sports medicine major, I know that depending on severity it usually takes weeks to recover, rather than days. He couldn’t even raise his arm above his head yesterday, and he struggled to put on a sleeveless shirt in the locker room…so I would say he is doubtful.
If he strained the AC joint, he could probably regain his ROM in 2 weeks with solid rehab and PT. If he bruised it, he might play if he can deal with the pain. If he does play, I would curb your expectations anyway. I am betting that the coaching staff will err on the side of caution with Cj this week, and I am betting he sits this one out.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
i just dont understand why he is out there catching balls then, wouldnt that worsen the injury?
Is it just painful, or can he aggrivate it by forceing the motions needed to catch balls in practice?

What I read was that he ran routes...
but nothing was thrown to him. Do you have a link that shows where he actually caught passes?
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I think there's a....
80% chance we take a linebacker in the first round. We need to do to our linebacking corps what we did to our D-line. I’ve founf myself actually liking our secondary this year. They’re young, in a new system and playing pretty damn good. Give them some time to gel.
We will...
take the best player available in the draft. And if we take a LB in the top 10 (I hope this is lower…) he better be pretty damn special. I like our secondary this year too….compared to last year. But if we can get a star potential CB like Amukamura or Peterson and slide one of Berry, Smith, Houston to the nickel that makes us that much more dangerous.
Crap
I bumped my On Paper preview to today so you could take Friday. Oh well, we’ll have the kinks worked out by the bye week.
Anyways, good write-up, although I have to say I’m much more optimistic about Calvin. If he’s out there practicing (albeit not catching passes), I’m convinced its just a pain issue. I’d be pretty damn shocked if he didn’t give it a go this week. If he doesn’t, I don’t see this offense moving anywhere.
I read somewhere he was catching passes today.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

I will hold off on discussion for now, since my scouting report is going to be posted tomorrow.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
I'm concerned about our chances
I voted for 50-50 if we can stop the run, and I think that’s the key. I want to see Manning throwing the ball because I think their weakness is the passing game, Eli is prone to mistakes and I think if we can capitalize on them, then things can happen. Field position will also be key to, if we can manage some short fields, then I think we can put up points.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
I'll give you the 4th rec
so we can get this on the top of the recommended
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
That was a Damn Good Read, KDAWG!!!
The only things I wanna mention is the
1. The Giants don’t play the Jets this year, they played the panthers in the first game
2. (and this is my opinion) Jacobs is better on the outside with stretch plays and tosses where he can pick up speed. he doesn’t do as well up the middle because he runs too upright. And Bradshaw is better up the middle. He’s really not that fast, seems to always get caught from behind, but he’s quick, shifty, and powerful. with his short stature and powerful running, he’s much more effective up the middle.
3. (also my opinion) your best chance for winning is NOT to stack the box. Every week, going back to last year, people think the way to beat the giants is to force them to pass by stacking the box. That’s the wrong approach, and Eli usually makes that team pay by hitting his receivers in one on one coverages. But if you allow the Giants to run the ball, and hold them to field goals, and your team score on quick strikes, that’s the key. Then once you have the lead, you force the giants to throw without having to stack the box. But, of course, it’s easier said than done.
But Good Luck Lions…I think it’ll be a blow out, in favor of the Giants. But hey, “That’s why they play the games”.
Let's Go Giants!!!!
oh yeah, i almost forgot
4. If you stack the box and leave Bad Bad CC brown back there, you’ll find out the hard way, why last years Giants team was the 2nd worse in franchise history, and this year, with essentially the same team, (just switch Rolle w/ Brown), and now the have the #1 pass D in the league.
Let's Go Giants!!!!
In hindsight...
I looks like Calvin Johnson could possibly play…he is listed as questionable on the official injury report, even though he did practice Friday and was able to use both arms to catch the ball (unlike Wednesday). He will be a game time decision though, so it is still possible that he sits out this week, making my prediction of such true (unfortunately). However, I hope he can play, and that he is healthy enough to not make it worse if he does play.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
You put a lot of work into these reports KDawg....Nice job
I just couldn’t bring myself to read your G.B. write up. That was my issue. I was so down for that game and felt it was a lost cause, I couldn’t see any good coming out of that game.
