Pride Of Detroit Podcast: Matthew Stafford Interview

In a special edition of the Pride of Detroit Podcast, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford stops by to talk about this past Sunday's Giants game, his shoulder injury, his thoughts on likely returning to play against the Redskins, a potential quarterback controversy (had Shaun Hill not been injured in New York) and more. Check it out below.

(Special thanks to Matthew Stafford for stopping by and to the folks at AXE for setting up the interview.)

Stafford's coming back

I’m glad he’s coming back! Really feel bad for Hill though. He played well for the Lions. I hope Matty can finish strong and avoid those injuries.

Nice get, Jerry!

I was a little worried about the offseason question, since we have a little photographic evidence of what he likes to do.

Pretty interesting to hear that he doesn’t listen to any music pregame. Wonder what he does to get himself psyched up.

I can't believe you got

Stafford to come on. That was amazing. thank you.

Really well done Jerry

I was hugely impressed with your interviewing skills. You sounded upbeat and asked some good questions, you didn’t sound nervous at all. Really well done.

Thanks for Matt for stopping by, we should try to get more Lions on.

RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.

Music

I was kind of happy to hear he doesn’t listen to music pre-game. His position needs concentration and calmness, not getting amped up. I bet he reviews plays and studies tape pre-game, like a pro-QB should.

Did Matt sounded tired / bored to anyone?

Also he said if / hopefully I am ready to go in Washington I believe…

Please let this be a definite.

He did about 50 different interviews yesterday

So I’m sure he was getting a bit tired of them lol

I'm sure

I guess part of me was hoping he would be really fired up to talk to Pride of Detroit since it’s a huge fan site.

Maybe even say something like I read what some of you have to say…..

But I know these guys go through a lot and just agreeing to do the Podcast shows class….

Yea interview after interview can be taxing

The part that I appreciated was how patient Matthew and the guy from AXE were with my technical difficulties. They were very cool and classy!

Good stuff Jerry

I am really glad to see that a guy like Matt Stafford is so easy to touch base with. It shows that he is down to earth and that he is approachable. That is great character in my opinion, and it gives me even more respect for our young leader. In my opinion, it would have been INSANE for the coaching staff to play Shaun Hill over Matt Stafford, regardless of how well or poorly Hill played in a backup role. Many people might point to the Mike Vick and Kevin Kolb scenario to support an argument that sometimes you have to roll with the guy that is hot, but I think that situation is driven by Andy Reid’s desire to prove that he was right all along about Kevin Kolb being a franchise caliber QB. Nobody here ever believed that Shaun Hill was the long term solution at QB for the Lions, and I would bet that nobody in the FO or on the coaching staff believed it either. Michael Vick is a young man who is a great athlete, and who is capable of being a long term solution at QB for any team…and Kolb is also a young man, with a different skill set, that many view as a long term solution at QB for the Eagles…THAT is a true QB controversy in Philadelphia, and wholly different than what we have here in Detroit.

Here, we have a very young and upcoming star in Matthew Stafford…who is still learning and becoming better and better with experience,,,and we have, as you stated, a journeyman QB who has had his ups and downs around the league for some time now. To roll with Shaun Hill, just because he came in as Matthew Stafford’s backup and eventually performed well enough to give us chances to win, would potentially be detrimental to the development and confidence of Matthew Stafford as our young leader and franchise QB. While I was against him starting right away when we drafted him, and while I stated that he may be better off learning behind a veteran for a season, I feel that I was at least partially wrong in not wanting him to start immediately. It may have been true that Stafford could have benefited from watching the game from the sideline, behind a veteran QB, I feel that he came in and proved right away that he was ready to take over and develop on the field. Now that he has been given that opportunity, I do not feel that going backwards (so to speak) would be the most intelligent, or even remotely proper, thing to do in reference to the immediate and future development of Matthew Stafford as a professional franchise QB. No sir…he is our captain, our leader, our QB, and the future of the Detroit Lions. If he is healthy and ready to go, I say that you MUST sit Shaun Hill or whoever else is playing, even if they are performing well, regardless of whether the situation is real or hypothetical.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Oct 20, 2010 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe a example of this would be

Kurt Warner and Matt Lienart. Not directly the same adn it cant be proven but Arizona did chose the journey man over thier 1st round pick. Did that ruin Matt Lienart? Cant be proven but it could be a big part of the reason he is not the starter this year for Arizona. His confidence could have been beaten down then and then completely crushed when they chose Anderson over him this year.

by shanndiggit on Oct 20, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

EH Lineart had the job, he lost it, if he played like Matthew plays he would not have lost the job IMO

Hell no one has even signed him now, Lineart is a bust along the same lines of a Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell. I don’t think you are allowed to ever use Matthew name with USC overrated bust boy in the same sentence again ;)

Sorry didnt mean to imply Stafford is anything like Lienart.

I know there is big english word for what I meant to do but I am not the most intelligent guy out there. But I was just using that as a example of what could happen if peopel got all stupid and decided to start hill over staff.

Just a slick and subtle way to bring the AXE brand name into peoples minds.

More marketing and subtle advertising without having to produce a 30 second commercial which you switch off anyway.

Every time you look at this thread you have the AXE name right under the podcast player.

Other Stafford Interviews from yesterday.

You may have to copy and paste this one, cause the link is really long.
It is Stafford on the Dan Patrick show, although, Tony Bruno is guest hosting.
I hate Tony Bruno, and it kinda sounds like Stafford does too.

The Second one is better, this is Stafford on 97.1 with Karsch and Anderson. Although he still drops the Axes Spiel here, he really sounds upbeat in this interview.

I think its pretty safe to say

There was never really a QB contreversy. Matt would have to play pretty bad I think for that to happen.
