Lions Sign Bobby Carpenter, Put Paul Pratt Back On Practice Squad
The Lions made a pair of roster moves tonight, signing free agent linebacker Bobby Carpenter and signing cornerback Paul Pratt back to the practice squad.
Carpenter worked out for the Lions earlier today. If you're not familiar with him, here is a quick look at his NFL career from my post over at SB Nation Detroit:
Carpenter was just released by the Dolphins earlier this week. He joined Miami in early September after being let go by the Rams during the final round of roster cuts. He ended up in St. Louis after the Cowboys traded him. Dallas originally drafted him with the 18th overall pick in 2006.
As for Pratt, he spent a couple days on the 53-man roster before being demoted back to the practice squad. He was added to the 53-man roster before Sunday's game, released and now has been added back to the practice squad. Basically, the Lions were able to play him in an actual game by calling him up, and they have essentially sent him back down to the practice squad now; he just had to be released to make the move back down possible.

okay, that makes sense.
I was scratching my head a bit over the moves wrt to Pratt. I would like to see him battling for a spot on the roster next year.
Ok
I wanted to see Detroit make a play for Carpenter when Dallas was trading him…but it sounded like Dallas wanted more than Detroit was willing to offer. Hopefully this works out for the Lions.
Solid move
A big backer that has more talent than Palmer and Vinny. Bobby is a 4-3 that played in a 3-4 scheme at Dallas.

Not going to jump in that until I see Bobby on the field
in a Lions uniform.

Nice move for sure
I’m not gonna call it genius, as there’s a reason that we’re the guy’s fourth team in four years. Still, from what I’ve seen/heard from him he’s got a great attitude and work ethic, which is just the type of young guy we want around even if he doesn’t have the talent you might expect from the 18th overall pick. Could be a very nice redemption story for dude if he plays well, which is always good times.
What’s really nice, IMO, is that he doesn’t need to be a star LB; as long as he ends up being quality depth it will have been a good pickup for us since we didn’t give up anything for him. If we had given up something for him to acquire him from Dallas when they were shopping him, he would have had expectations and would disappoint us fans if he didn’t meet said expectations. But giving up nothing to get him means there are no expectations, which may be beneficial to a seemingly laid-back guy like Carpenter.
I love the move
Carp was a pretty good player in college. With our dire need of LBs what’s the worst that could happen? Could he be another guy like Alphonso Smith who can try to revive his career here? Granted he’s been in the league a few more years than Phonz and has had more opportunities. Either way I’m excited to see if he can contribute!

Definitely different then the Phonz situation
whoever calls the shots in the Broncos FO is an absolute idiot; giving up on the 37th overall pick after a single season is just plain ol’ stupid. I’m not expecting Carpenter to be anywhere near as much of a player for us as Phonz, mainly because, as you said, he’s been given numerous opportunities without sticking anywhere.
Still, a good pickup, and if he ends up being just a quality backup I’ll be a happy camper.
he might just not be fit for a 4-3 defense which is the defense of choice for his last 2 teams.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
oops yeah
It is refreshing that something new is coming in to play, with the bye week he has a chance to be schooled up and make a difference and turn his career around. he is still young.

Gerald Alexander was cut from the Jags

ttttwwwwwhhhhhhhaaaattttt?????
I always wanted him to get a chance to show off his goods, what are the chances we might get him back that lil son of a gun
I'd be all about it
I know he started for the Jags for at least some period of time this year and it seems like he has more upside then a C.C. Brown. I’d be cool with bringing him back.
Hold on a second guys.
This is the second time they have cut Gerald this year. They cut him on Sept. 4, resigned him on Sept. 27, he immediately became their starting Safety weeks 4, 5, and 6, and now they cut him again?
They have got some real secondary issues in Jacksonville. I regularly visit their site and have adopted the Jags as my AFC team. Though they are 3 and 3, they have been absolutely embarassed in their three losses, two of them at home.
I am not sure how much of the problem Gerald is. He played all last year for them and did okay, nothing great, but he seems to have been identified as a problem by the Jags organization.
Who gets pushed out to make room for Gerald?
Personally
I liked Gerald coming out of college. However, I never saw the drive from him to be a starter. He was a special teamer. I watched some of the Jags last game and he was getting beat all night. There was more then one occasion I heard the announcers say that he was in the wrong position to cover the receiver. I still like the kid because he seems like a real team player, willing to play where ever they stick him. I just don’t see the upside in him anymore.
Instantly 2nd best LB Behind Peterson.
Like the move here.

ehhh... I don't know about that.
Again, there’s a reason that we’re the fourth team Carpenter’s been on in four years. I’m sure our LB situation is worse then his previous teams, but still, if he wasn’t good enough to make the 53 man roster of three other teams then he’s probably not gonna step in from day one and be our second best LB.
We need to not expect much of anything from Carpenter, because if you have pretty much any kind of expectations for him he’s probably gonna disappoint. Three teams hoped he could be a long-term starter for them, and when it was all said and done those three teams decided he wasn’t good enough to make their 53 man roster. So let’s tone the expectations for this guy down a couple of notches.

Yes, I agree with motown. Let's not be so quick to think this guy has much to offer.
Parcells seems to like him…….twice. No one else in the league has much use for him.
Alexander started this past Monday
He made his share of mistakes too which is why he was cut. Id like to see Spievey start at safety and maybe give Alexander a chance as a backup.
I believe may do better in our 4-3 as opposed to the 3-4s he’s been in.

For those saying he's a better fit in 4-3...
why? He was a SLB at OSU (or so I read) and the Rams (who don’t have many playmakers at LB) dropped him even though their 4-3 isn’t that different than ours. I’m not saying he won;t fit better than he did in the 3-4 he was in, but I’m just not sure why people are thinking that? Seems like he’s got some of the same problems as Follet has been having (getting off blocks, wrapping up, and having the range to cover his zone). Difference there, is that Follet is very physical and an ST ace…hopefully Carpenter gets his shit together and Gun instills the fear of God in him and he toughens up. Otherwise, I see him getting in Gun’s dog house A TON.
RA
We need somebody at LB
Why not give this Carpenter a shot…
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
He is getting a shot, and experience.
On the Practice Squad. The guy was out of football for 2 years, and we have played 6 weeks of the season. Patience my friend.
8====D my lil' j16941
I seen some footage on this guy in some dallas traiing camp stuff, might have been a hard knocks or something
While I do not think he is the most talented behind J. P., I do think of all the guys playing now he is. Levy, Dizon, Follett are all as good or better IMO, but they are all injured, so great addition. IMO he will be better against the run than any of the other depth guys currently playing. I also think he is more well rounded than other options. Vinny is great against the run but a liability in pass coverage and Ashlee is great in coverage but not so good in run support.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
I keep forgetting about Levy
So I guess hes instantly 3rd best.

4th team in 4 years....
People keep saying we’re his 4th team in 4 years. While that may be right…we’re actually his 4th team THIS year. I liked the kid coming out….wanted Detroit to trade for him this year….am glad it worked out this way. We didn’t have to give up anything for a guy that can hopefully become a solid backup or start for injured players.
Bobby Carpenter
Hopefully he can actually work out here for us. The guy has bounced around all over the place but I think the schemes just didn’t fit him, so hopefully now that he’s back in a 4-3 he can produce.

also
for the fact he played for miami and cowboys we play them both this year and he can sure help out with what those teams are going to do with play calling and co forth great move mayhew. mayhew president in 2012 lol
I think Carpenter will stick here
He is the guy that has been just barely been getting beat out. I am pretty sure the rams cut him because of Lauranitis, I think Carpenter was playing MLB for them, but I could be wrong. On the Cowboys hey ran out of patience with him, everything I heard about him from his time there was a positive, but he was just barely beaten out there. In Miami he was in that 3-4 defense which he does not fit. All I ever heard about this guy is that he is gifted athletically, a super hard worker, and willing to do whatever they ask of him. Even if he is not a perennial starter, IMO he is easily the best depth guy on our roster. I do also think he would seriously challenge Zack for a starting spot.
I love Zack and I want him to be out there on the field, but he has a history with injuries relating to nerve problems, stingers and such. He is going to see a specialist regarding his neck. IMO Carpenter is the insurance there in case Zack is out for a long time or possibly done with football.
B. C. will be a bit rough at first, because of learning yet another new scheme this year. I expect him to show some promise after a couple of weeks though. Guess my boy Caleb will get his shot in the final game or two.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
My take on Lauranitis.
Carpenter is a 4-3 OLB, not an MLB. Lauranitis is an MLB. The rams trying to force Carpenter into MLB is probably what caused Carpenter to get dropped — Carpenter did good, but got beat out by a more experienced guy in a non-standard position for him. Hopefully we won’t make the same mistake.
thanks for the vid
I like what Bobby had to say. Everything seems to point that he is going to put in the extra work. To prove he belongs. Bobby talked about staying after practice and getting with the coaches. Learning what he needs to know to get on the same page with the other linebackers. I got high hopes for the kid.

I've been fooled before...
I have high hopes for this kid. My friend is a Buckeye nut (I’m not sure how we’re still friends) so I got to see alot of this guy in college. I like Laurinaitis, but I think BC is the best LB that OSU has produced in years. I don’t know why he didn’t fit with the other teams, but I do know that this kid’s toolbox is full. He is capable of playing well in the NFL, I just hope he decides to do it during his stay in Detroit.
Maybe we will all get lucky and Spielman will show up as the new LB coach
For some reason I am not sold on Matt Burke as a coach. He is one hell of a bungee jumper though.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
Carpenter
I wish the kid luck, he’ll need it! I just wonder how he’ll meet his end, I’m pretty sure we lost one to choking on someone else’s vomit, one was certainly packed away in the bands errr teams equipment, some have most definitely just dissapeared so I’m thinking the safe money is on that he’s going to spontaneously combust :/
They say some people never go crazy.... what a boring life that must be!!
