Lions Notes: Jason Fox Getting Reps At Guard
- During practice on Tuesday, Jason Hanson made a 58-yard field goal.
- Jason Fox is still a tackle, but he's getting some work at guard during practice in order to add some versatility.
- Ndamukong Suh was at the Pistons' home opener on Friday (as the picture shows) and took part in a free-throw contest, apparently winning $1200 for charity.
- Jahvid Best says he is "definitely close" to being 100 percent healthy.
- Nate Burleson said he is going to think about his fumble against the Giants all season and will be out to prove his doubters wrong.
- Shaun Hill threw some passes in practice earlier this week. As Chris McCosky points out, though, Hill hurt his left arm, not his throwing arm. So he won't be close to coming back until he can take snaps comfortably.
- Remember when Jon Kitna dressed up as Joe Cullen (the former Lions D-line coach who went through a Wedny's drive-thru naked) on Halloween back in 2006? Well, as Pro Football Talk pointed out in a recent post, Kitna will start for the Cowboys on Halloween tomorrow, going up against the Jaguars, the team Cullen now coaches for. Small world.

Oh boy.......
I know our O-Line needs help, but you know it’s real bad when a comic strip character is getting a shot.

I am glad Fox is expanding his versatility. Knowing what the players around you are required to do will further his abilities to eventually play tackle and provide the team with depth.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
Agreed
It’s why someone like Gandy is valuable. Good to see Fox adding that versatility.

Amazingly valuable, with enough versatility in your depth you can save a couple of roster spots and make use of them for guys like Stefan Logan
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
Cullen thats funny as hell
Hope to see fox play some this year.
You can't keep the Pain Train off the tracks!
Me fail english thats umpossible
It'll be good to have another option at Guard if Peterman can't pull his head out of his ass and stop hitting after the whistle
Also, I totally forgot about Gandy. He looked like he could play a little last year when Peterman was out.

possibly more scraps to pickup?
While not related to the article I had a question regarding todays waiver of Thaddeus Gibson (LB) by Pittsburgh. He was a pretty good DE for Ohio State and came into the draft with pretty good expectations although falling to the 4th. He was a solid presence for the Buckeyes making 2nd team all Big Ten and leading the team in tackles for a loss and sacks last year. I think he’s too small to rate as a DE for us, at 6’2" 240lb, but I have to wonder how he’d work out as a LB. Obviously that’s where the Steelers had him pegged too but due to their depth at LB have made this move to obviously try and tuck him on their PS while they brought a DT active to replace an injury loss.
So I’m wondering if anyone else thinks he’d be worth a shot for our needy LB core. I have no idea how he’d fair in pass coverage duties, but he has shown an eye for locating the play. If we were to snag him what would be the likely roster move to free up a spot? Brown to IR? Vasher to the old folks home? B Johnson to who really cares just not here?
They say some people never go crazy.... what a boring life that must be!!
I can't remember ever hearing about a 3-4 OLB playing LB in a 4-3
It could happen, but generally those guys are always DEs if they switch schemes.
I’m thinking of some guys who have switched from 3-4 to 4-3 or vice versa Jason Hunter, Aaron Kampman, Tampa Hali, Schobel, Orakpo etc. All LB to DE or DE to LB

His size does not suggest he is big enough to play DE
He is actually far closer to the prototypical LB in our scheme. I do not know anything about him but the thought is interesting. Picking up players from great teams that are dropped from positions of massive depth seems like a great idea for us right about now.

ya
I can’t say I know a lot about him either. It just seems like an interesting move and very much a Mayhew type one. As Westside points out it is a different situation to try and have a kid go 4-3 D in college to 3-4 OLB in pros then to 4-3 OLB, but not unheard of. It just seems like he’s the type of solid thumper kid GymShorts craves. Now Jcruize brings up an interesting point about learning the playbook. Is that from inability or lack of time/exposure. I think he’s made the move to and from PS a couple times this year so obviously they do like something about him.

I was hoping we'd hear a bit about Fox sometime this season
Versatility is always a plus with an O-Lineman.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
