NFC North Standings: You've Got Company, Minnesota
With the Lions winning on Sunday and Minnesota losing, there is now a two-way tie for third place in the NFC North between the two teams. The post-Week 8 NFC North standings look like this:
| Team | W | L | T | Pct. | PF | PA | Net | Div. |
| Green Bay Packers | 5 | 3 | 0 | .625 | 176 | 136 | +40 | 2-1 |
| Chicago Bears | 4 | 3 | 0 | .571 | 126 | 114 | +12 | 2-0 |
| Minnesota Vikings | 2 | 5 | 0 | .286 | 129 | 144 | -15 | 1-1 |
| Detroit Lions | 2 | 5 | 0 | .286 | 183 | 165 | +18 | 0-3 |
Two quick comments: 1) The Vikings play at home against Arizona next Sunday, which is a very winnable game. If the Lions want to keep pace, they will likely have to upset the Jets. 2) Had the referees not screwed Detroit in the first game of the season, the Lions and Bears would be tied for second right now. I don't think I'm ever going to be able to move past the what-if scenarios regarding what the standings could look like. Oh, well.

Tavaris Jackson
If Tavaris plays, I don’t think Minnesota has a good chance. Do you guys think Favre play this weekend?
Personally, Tavaris might be a better option for them than Favre.
Jackson is much more mobile, and is underrated as a passer. If Favre was in good form it would be no contest, but he has not been very good this year.
Jackson would allow them to focus more on the running game.
Although Mr. Moss might not appreciate the change.
I watch some Vikings, especially in the preseason
Mainly because I am a fan of Mike Mayock and he covers their games in the preseason. And let me say this. The Vikings are idiots for bringing Favre back this year. I understand why they did it, but I honestly believed it was the wrong move even before it was done. I mentioned on their own site that his heart didn’t seem to be in it and that failure was imminent.
The thing is that TJack is not all bad, if played right. He is every bit as good as Vince Young and all you have to do is look at what the Titans do with him and Chris Johnson and one good receiver. Furthermore Joe Webb was amazing in camp and the preseason. He could easily run a VERY effective wildcat offense with AP.
The Vikings failed on many levels this year. Trading back and settling for Chris Cook instead of going up for a guy like Kyle Wilson, to Letting Chester Taylor go, to not getting a better tackle. All of this starts at the top and trickles down. From Rick Spielman to Brad Childress to Leslie Frasier I see a much needed house cleaning coming over this debacle.
Its not just the Favre move, they have done pretty much everything wrong this year, including going after Randy Moss. On the Daily Norsemen they claim it is mainly a big push to win in order to get a new stadium financed and keep the Vikings in Minnesota. There is a huge push to get them moved to LA, and with Magic Johnson willing to chip in hundreds of millions on an NFL ownership group for LA, this is a very real possibility.
Their ship if going up in flames on so many levels it is quite amazing and amusing.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
I second that.
LA has had multiple chances and you have to wonder why the Rams and then the Raiders moved out. Stadium? If it is because of the stadium, good luck getting any money out of the state of California or city of Los Angeles for a new stadium. The new owners will have to pony up that half a billion or so on their own.
I think it will be near impossible to get a new stadium
They just built a new baseball stadium and it’s not like Minneapolis is a rich city.

T jack is not as good as Vince Young, IMHO
The rest of what you said is dead on. Young is head and shoulders better than T jack, IMHO.
DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!
anyone else writes this and i would call them a closet vikes fan
U actually watch the minny preseason cause mayock is the color guy? I like mike too but I’m not going to watch a team I hate because of an announcer. Especially preseason

I watch as much NFL as I can, especially opponents, I like to know thier team as intricately as I can
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
You like him on Vike's preseason...
When I watched it (mostly as a fan of the NFL and researching a divisional foe) it made me dislike him. He’s such a Vikings homer and it has tainted my view of him as an analyst on NFL Network, as everything he said/says about the Vikes is uber-positive, either because he’s on their payroll or is like I said, a homer.
Also, I have quite the hatred for the Vikings, probably more so than the Bears and Packers, so anyone associated with them gets my dislike as well.
Well you have to keep in mind, that for them he is much like Dan Miller
You cannot expect anything but a homer outlook and positivity from a preseason announcer that is paid for by the team.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
LA Does like Purple teams from Minnesota.
Move the Vikings to the NFC West, and give us the Rams in the North.
I’d be down with that… I HATE the Vikings!

I get what you are saying
But I would rather keep the Vikes right here. They are on their way down and the Rams are on their way up.

Looking ahead, not behind-
It’s time to let the Chicago game go. How many of us noticed Calvin’s TD reception yesterday where he made sure to lock it in? At least he has adjusted his play to a poor rule.
The Lions should win 5 more games if you look at opposing team records and winnable home games. The Vikes have more games against lesser opponents than the Lions. If the Lions can play games where they are hitting on all cylinders, I think they can beat the likes of the Jets, Packers, and Patriots. With the exception of the Rams game, our team has not yet hit their stride. The second half against Washington the offense and defense looked good, but special teams were poor. We will have to play better to beat the good teams we face later this year.
That being said- The Redskins have lost to the Lions for 2 years in a row! Feels good to have everyone talking about McNabb sitting. Perhaps Shanny was just trying to protect the guy from taking another big hit! Trick or Treating was fun dressed up in my Lions gear and talking about the team winning again.

Recced you for "Forget Chicago" sentiment.
Guys, that game is done and we lost. We really need to move on and forget it.
I am glad Calvin has learned something from that incident. Sounds Looks like he is going to use it as a spur to have a monster season. With Staff back, and going downfield more often, I think we will see Calvin get plus 16 TDs and +1400 yards.
you can tell me to forget the chicago game all you want
But its not happening. Sean is right to still be bothered by it. When I’m 70 I’ll remember that play. Really pisses me off when you say to forget it and move ahead. I felt like someone died that day because everyone I talked to said “sorry for your loss”
by Scotty G on Nov 1, 2010 11:27 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
the reason Sean brings it up...
and that I am still annoyed by the bad call, is that it still has an impact right now. If that is called a TD, we are 3-4, as are the Bears, and we are tied for 2nd in the North, not very far out of 1st, and with 3 divisional games at home left, we would control our destiny for the most part.
I got the Chicago game Shelved...
I’m not gonna whine about it anymore, but if we miss the playoffs by 1 win….
Oh Boy!!! Then you will see some FURY!!!

I dunno if you all noticed, but we also have the best offense in the division
For that matter we rank as the 6th best in the league in terms of points per game.

2 Tennessee Titans 28
3 Indianapolis Colts 27.2
4 Oakland Raiders 26.5
5 San Diego Chargers 26.2

Ninety-two points in two weeks will do that for you.
Looks like the Patriots will not be getting the top eight pick they thought they would be getting.
Tampa, St. Louis, Oakland, KC; talk about the meek inheriting the earth.
Just think
We did that with our back up QB.
Honolulu Blue - Honolulublueblog.blogspot.com - A blog dedicated to the Detroit Lions
Also
A lot of credit needs to go to Logan for those numbers. He’s run one back for touchdown, but he’s set up numerous scores with big returns this year.
The defense also has two touchdowns.
Not taking anything away from the offense, but just pointing out that PPG includes some of the good play from the other units as well.
O line needs some love too
Scoring like that is a direct compliment to a O line that can pass block.
DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!
You are Correct Sir!
Gotta say man, I Love the Sig.
Good Job on you bro, bet you have never been happier to lose a bet.

I honor my bets
and that is one I just love to lose.
Damn, that O line was sick yesterday and they needed to be on a day when our young QB was coming back after a while off. Just flat out great across the board. They even managed to make a few holes for the running game. Who was this Orakopovertated guy anyhow? was he even playing?
Shutting him down was great too on so many levels. The skins fans at HH thought he was going to have a career day and he was no where to be found. I just can’t say enough about our O line play yesterday.
In season past, when our QB was struggling like Staff was in the first half, the O line probably would have folded. The Sims acquisition was much larger than even I, who totally loved it initially, had thought from the jump.
I think I am developing a bromance for Mayhew.
DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!
Orakpo was banged up
I don’t agree that he would have had a monster game, but he is pretty good when healthy.
Half of the Redskins were questionable lol
They definitely need a bye.
Pride of Detroit, for Lions fans | SB Nation Detroit, for Detroit-area sports fans
I think it is worth mentioning, that Peterman sure did play a lot better after a bye week to let that left knee heal up some
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
thats more of a Shanahan thing...
he’s done it since week one, nearly every played on the list is questionable. Also, Calvin was clearly playing through pain on Sunday, and he was still lights out. If Orakpo was as much of a beast as he has been hyped up to be, then he would’ve shown up still. Look at Matthews Jr., he’s played through injuries and is still a dominant player.
And if we win that Chicago game
do we gain enough confidence to pull out one of the close games we lost to either GB, NY, or Philly?
Think this team has the mojo to make it to the postseason?
I won’t go all in on the idea yet, but it makes for a great pipe dream. Something enjoyable for this season.
Hell, I’d rather hang out around here more often now anyway, CJ is all in pity-parade mode labeling every player terrible, wailing and moaning and crying, etc. It’s probably familiar to you anyway but yeh. Hard to hang out around there right now.

With the way this division is going 9-7 might win it
That would mean we can afford too more losses the entire rest of the year, and would probably have to sweep the rest of the division games. Crazy but not impossible.
Here’s my crazy but not impossible scenario:
NYJ: Upset win
Buffalo: Win
Dallas: Win
NE: Loss
Chicago: Win
GB: Win
TB: WIn
MIami: Loss
Minn: Win
9-7 NFC North champs.

We can win in Miami
But damn thats not as unlikely as it seems
The beginning of the end of the misery
Miami is better than their record says right now.
They have lost to Pitt, Jets and the Pats. Three teams that are pretty damn good.
DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!
Miami has not won at home yet, I am not so sure they will be as tough for as as some think
IMO New England on Thanksgiving is our hardest remaining game. After them I think the Jets will be pretty tough. After them I would say the Packers then Miami.
I put New England over the Jets for two reasons, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. That team simply does not beat itself. That is a game that the Lions will have to take, and play very well to take I might add.
The Jets, while they have arguably the best defense in football, have an average offensive line IMO and a weak quarterback. Our defense is going to have an easier time against them than they did the Giants. Our offense is going to have some rough going too. Beating the Jets will rely more on shutting down the run and protecting the football IMO. If we can do that they are more beatable than some would think.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
I gotta say Jets
Pats have been quite lucky. I watched the Chargers game and even the Vikings game and the defense did not look good at all. Favre litterally just stood there and completed passes. Plus, who’s gonna cover CJ? Wilhite and McCourtey are young and inexperienced. They are gonna have their hands full.
On defense, I saw no named guys like Antawn Barnes and Jonathan Applewite get past their lineman with ease. Deon Branch and Wes Welker shouldn’t be all that tough to handle and they don’t really have a runningback.
On top of all this, the game will be on Thxgiving which means Ford Field will be packed. I actually see us winning against the Pats and losing against the Jets. Jets will be hungry coming into this game after the embarassement last week.
The beginning of the end of the misery
Well I think we can agree that both of those teams will be our two tougest left, thankfully they are both at Ford Field
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
Hard not to go there
I run these scenarios all the time. Especially coming off a game where we got after the QB so well and where CJ showed us his skills. If this next game goes that way (upset win) then seriously, who knows?

Buffalo and Dallas suck

thank you...
as Schwartz has said repeatedly, 90% of these players haven’t been a part of those streaks, were not a part of 0-16, etc. It’s like series records that go back 60-plus years, they don’t really impact this Sunday. I mean the Patriots used to be terrible, the Bills used to be dominant, times change and teams do too.
road losses
Aaron, weve been in all of the games except perhaps Minnesota. Plus half of the road games are already in the books. I like our chance on the road vs. Buffalo, and Dallas, and I’m pretty sure Vegas will agree.
We’ve finally getting some momentum going here, so don’t jump ship on the Lions just yet!
even the Vike's game was in reach...
remember, Hill threw 2 ints in the redzone. Make those TD’s and we send it into overtime or maybe even win it with a FG before the end.
As I went over in my penalty analysis
of the year, the Vikings game was deceptively close despite being 24-10. If Suh’s penalty hadn’t reversed the second quarter turnover, and everything else remained the same, the fourth quarter total would have been 17-17. Do we lose in that overtime? Doubt it.
Do I need to remind you thats its not the same team thats playing the games?

I think a lot of people need to be reminded that Schwartz is not marinelli/mohrningwhig/mariucci, Mayhew is not “You Know Who”, Suh is not Darby, KVB is not Dewayne White, and Staff is not Kitna/Orlovsky/Daunte.
This is a new team, that is playing a different style of football. I’m sure the negatives will whine that we are still losing, but those days are almost over. Those streaks are our burden, not their’s.

I hate that goddamn line. If you actually pay attention, this team is much different. The 0-16 year, we did not compete at all. Poor coaching, poor players, poor everything. There has not been one game this year that the Lions have not had a chance to win, and the players have an aggression and put it all on the field until the game is over. There is no quit in the 2010 Lions, and now that we are healthy, I think we will be on the W side of the game more so than not.
Yeah, I hate that...we definitely ain't the same old Lions

Monday morning lines
Anyone look at this game at the beginning of the season and think we’d be only a 4 point dog against the Jets? Not me. Not saying this means anything for the game, but since the Jets were considered by some the best team in the NFL going into this week, it definitely shows that the Lions are gaining some respect outside of Detroit.
Is it down to 4 pts already.
I posted a story, in the Monday Links. That had us as 6 pt dogs, the great thing, is that the guy that wrote the article is picking the Lions to Win Outright.
8====D my lil' j16941
it is good to see the line going down
That means people were betting on Detroit forcing vegas to narrow the gap. You want respect. It is right there for you to see.
DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!
As long as we get to him
And if last week is any indication, we’ll be in their backfield all day long.
eeh
not as easy against the Jets. They have one of the best (if not the best) offensive line in the NFL, but ya if the Lions get 7 sacks on Dirty Sanchez, then its a win
The beginning of the end of the misery
Obviously, the Skins O-line was like a revolving door
But I don’t know if the Jets will keep Sanchez upright all day. Also, Sanchez has been pretty awful in their last two games, completing less than 50% of his passes and throwing 1 TD vs. 4 picks.
Good run blocking line, average pass blocking, mediocre is going a bit far IMO
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
definition of mediocre.
“of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate. "
Their pass blocking is of ordinary, moderate quality, neither good nor bad.
I am explicit in choosing my words. :P
its the barely adequate part that gets me, that is the Washington line, not the Jets
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
Let me put it this way
Barely adequate implies that there are a lot of soon to be replaced players on that line. That many are on their last legs and soon to retire, be released, or not talented enough to be on an NFL roster. This is NOT the case with the Jets. Several of those guys are pro bowlers.
Lets take a look at that line then shall we.
C Nick Mangold: Round 1 pick 29 in 2006. 1 time all pro, 2 time pro bowler.
RG Brandon Moore: Here is a guy that no Lions fan probably knows about, if you want to get to know him better, then check out this article. Here is an excerpt.
His endurance is unquestionable. He can bench press 600 pounds, has played 95 consecutive regular season games and has yet to allow a sack this season for the 5-1 Jets. At 305 pounds, Moore maintains balance, standing stout in protection and exploding on pulls. He trusts his technique and hand placement, rarely abandoning form as he employs counterintelligence from his college days as a defensive tackle, readily identifying a pass rusher’s path and finding ways to advance to another defender.
“He has the biggest voice in this locker room when he chooses to speak,” cornerback Darrelle Revis said.

LG Matt Slauson: Round 6 pick 193 in 2009. While this guy might actually fit your barely adequate label, he is young and still has upside. Unlike the two guys above, whom almost any NFL team would covet to have on their line. Jury is still out on this guy and while some might discount him keep in mind that he did beat out Vladimir Ducasse for the starting job.
RT Damian Woody: Lions fans should be familiar with this guy and while he did not play up to potential here, he seems to have had a resurgence in New York and is back to his high level of play. 2 time prow bowler, 2 time super bowl champion, 2003 Tuesday Morning Quarterback Non-QB Non-RB NFL MVP Award Winner.
LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson: Round 1 pick 4 in 2006. 1 time pro bowler and collegiate all American. I am not even going to bother to further talk about this guy, even Lions fans should know the name and that he is a good player.
So really are you kidding me? The Jets have 3 VERY good linemen in Mangold, Fergeson, and Moore. Woody while he might not quite be a stud anymore is playing well above average and still a solid starter on any line in the NFL. So you have one guy, that is an overachiever that is possibly below average at left guard. And he has a highly touted rookie in the wings breathing up his ass that will likely take that job sooner or later.
No the Jets actually have arguably the best offensive line in football talent wise, and anyone who says otherwise is crazy. Yes they are better at run blocking than pass protection, but they are no mediocre, nor push over line by any means.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
Esmurf they are a very talented group.......but....
That does not always ensure elite performance. Their O Line allows sacks on 4.8% of their passing plays. The Lions only allow 3.8% [third in the NFL]. I’m not sure where the Jets rank overall in the NFL. I doubt it is worse than about 18th.
But the Jets are tremendous in their run blocking. That will be the real challenge for the Lions. They must stop the run and force the Jets to pass and rely on Sanchez.
The Jets have allowed fewer sacks than the Lions
We are ranked 7th at 12, and they are 6th at 11 I believe. That is just going off memory but I do know they have given up less sacks than us. My whole point above is that they are a great line. Probably the best run blocking line in football and certainly average or better in pass protection.
Part of the reason they give up more sacks per passing play is because of scheme and flow. On scheme, a lot of their pass plays are max protect with 2-3 routes going out. It results in a lot of coverage sacks. On flow because their offensive line spends so much time run blocking that they are not ready to pass block when asked to. I don’t know if you ever played line, but if you spend all game run blocking, and then are asked to pass block occasionally, your technique is usually poor on the pass block. It has to do with muscle memory, repetition, and mental focus.
At any rate my beef was with calling anything about the Jets offensive line mediocre or barely adequate. I would hands down trade our offensive line for theirs and in my mind it is not something I would need to think about long at all.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
we are 6-1 ATS so far this season.
I’ll wait till later in the week, if it goes down to 3, I may just crap my pants.

Lions and Vikings headed in opposite directions
The long term view of the Lions and Vikings look pretty different, if you ask me.
It is pretty amazing how similar the Lions and Vikings are this year, same record against similar strength of schedule: http://sidelionreport.com/2010/11/01/the-lions-are-in-a-better-place-than-the-minnesota-vikings/
You guys can surely spin some words
I love the lions and I know they are improving but your seriously think the rest of the way we go 8-1? I think we could potentially finish 8-8 which means from this point we would be 6-3 and I think that is feasible. But the idea of us being so vastly improved just isn’t right.
I think next year we can make the playoffs with a strong finish this year as a great way to get us going in a positive direction. We can’t afford to pick atop the draft this year because of the salary issues (maybe draft gets a cap?) but ya. That is all :D
A Randy Moss free Season????
Was just on the NFL network and apparently the Vikes have waived Randy Moss…..so unless he goes to the Pats again then we wont have to cover his ass at all this year!!!!!!
Let's celebrate
I won a nice bet yesterday against my liberal Redskins fan! Schwartz finally looked happy….missed postgame interviews. Going forward the Lions are going to be an energized team and will finish ahead of the Vikings and the Bears! Roar!!!!
Not many think about it
The loss of Chester Taylors 3rd down magic is killing this team. Possibly more than anything else.
You can't keep the Pain Train off the tracks!
Me fail english thats umpossible
I agree...
if you can’t sustain drives, you don’t score points and you exploit your defense (a la Lions since Barry retired). Taylor always seemed to get just enough for the 1st down, whether it was 3rd-and-2 or 3rd-and-9. That team is all down hill. AP is relied on too much and runs in a way that he will have a short career, injuries are going to happen, and when they do, they will happen a lot. Also, that oline went from being dominant to being terrible with no sign of hope, and the defense is getting old and they aren’t doing a good job of replacing anyone. They have 6 sacks all season.
I just read on Shutdown Corner that by differential the NFC North is the best division in football
Whoo!
