NFC North Standings: You've Got Company, Minnesota

With the Lions winning on Sunday and Minnesota losing, there is now a two-way tie for third place in the NFC North between the two teams. The post-Week 8 NFC North standings look like this:

Team W L T Pct. PF PA Net Div.
Green Bay Packers 5 3 0 .625 176 136 +40 2-1
Chicago Bears 4 3 0 .571 126 114 +12 2-0
Minnesota Vikings 2 5 0 .286 129 144 -15 1-1
Detroit Lions 2 5 0 .286 183 165 +18 0-3

Two quick comments: 1) The Vikings play at home against Arizona next Sunday, which is a very winnable game. If the Lions want to keep pace, they will likely have to upset the Jets. 2) Had the referees not screwed Detroit in the first game of the season, the Lions and Bears would be tied for second right now. I don't think I'm ever going to be able to move past the what-if scenarios regarding what the standings could look like. Oh, well.

Tavaris Jackson

If Tavaris plays, I don’t think Minnesota has a good chance. Do you guys think Favre play this weekend?

by warriornation23 on Nov 1, 2010 5:58 AM EDT reply actions

Personally, Tavaris might be a better option for them than Favre.

Jackson is much more mobile, and is underrated as a passer. If Favre was in good form it would be no contest, but he has not been very good this year.

Jackson would allow them to focus more on the running game.

Although Mr. Moss might not appreciate the change.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 1, 2010 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I watch some Vikings, especially in the preseason

Mainly because I am a fan of Mike Mayock and he covers their games in the preseason. And let me say this. The Vikings are idiots for bringing Favre back this year. I understand why they did it, but I honestly believed it was the wrong move even before it was done. I mentioned on their own site that his heart didn’t seem to be in it and that failure was imminent.

The thing is that TJack is not all bad, if played right. He is every bit as good as Vince Young and all you have to do is look at what the Titans do with him and Chris Johnson and one good receiver. Furthermore Joe Webb was amazing in camp and the preseason. He could easily run a VERY effective wildcat offense with AP.

The Vikings failed on many levels this year. Trading back and settling for Chris Cook instead of going up for a guy like Kyle Wilson, to Letting Chester Taylor go, to not getting a better tackle. All of this starts at the top and trickles down. From Rick Spielman to Brad Childress to Leslie Frasier I see a much needed house cleaning coming over this debacle.

Its not just the Favre move, they have done pretty much everything wrong this year, including going after Randy Moss. On the Daily Norsemen they claim it is mainly a big push to win in order to get a new stadium financed and keep the Vikings in Minnesota. There is a huge push to get them moved to LA, and with Magic Johnson willing to chip in hundreds of millions on an NFL ownership group for LA, this is a very real possibility.

Their ship if going up in flames on so many levels it is quite amazing and amusing.

I second that.

LA has had multiple chances and you have to wonder why the Rams and then the Raiders moved out. Stadium? If it is because of the stadium, good luck getting any money out of the state of California or city of Los Angeles for a new stadium. The new owners will have to pony up that half a billion or so on their own.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 1, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it will be near impossible to get a new stadium

They just built a new baseball stadium and it’s not like Minneapolis is a rich city.

by Scotty G on Nov 1, 2010 10:42 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

You like him on Vike's preseason...

When I watched it (mostly as a fan of the NFL and researching a divisional foe) it made me dislike him. He’s such a Vikings homer and it has tainted my view of him as an analyst on NFL Network, as everything he said/says about the Vikes is uber-positive, either because he’s on their payroll or is like I said, a homer.

Also, I have quite the hatred for the Vikings, probably more so than the Bears and Packers, so anyone associated with them gets my dislike as well.

by lions_sucker on Nov 1, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Well you have to keep in mind, that for them he is much like Dan Miller

You cannot expect anything but a homer outlook and positivity from a preseason announcer that is paid for by the team.

Recced you for "Forget Chicago" sentiment.

Guys, that game is done and we lost. We really need to move on and forget it.

I am glad Calvin has learned something from that incident. Sounds Looks like he is going to use it as a spur to have a monster season. With Staff back, and going downfield more often, I think we will see Calvin get plus 16 TDs and +1400 yards.

But its not happening. Sean is right to still be bothered by it. When I’m 70 I’ll remember that play. Really pisses me off when you say to forget it and move ahead. I felt like someone died that day because everyone I talked to said “sorry for your loss”

the reason Sean brings it up...

and that I am still annoyed by the bad call, is that it still has an impact right now. If that is called a TD, we are 3-4, as are the Bears, and we are tied for 2nd in the North, not very far out of 1st, and with 3 divisional games at home left, we would control our destiny for the most part.

A lot of credit needs to go to Logan for those numbers. He’s run one back for touchdown, but he’s set up numerous scores with big returns this year.

and that is one I just love to lose.

Damn, that O line was sick yesterday and they needed to be on a day when our young QB was coming back after a while off. Just flat out great across the board. They even managed to make a few holes for the running game. Who was this Orakopovertated guy anyhow? was he even playing?

Shutting him down was great too on so many levels. The skins fans at HH thought he was going to have a career day and he was no where to be found. I just can’t say enough about our O line play yesterday.

In season past, when our QB was struggling like Staff was in the first half, the O line probably would have folded. The Sims acquisition was much larger than even I, who totally loved it initially, had thought from the jump.

I think I am developing a bromance for Mayhew.

by joshsun on Nov 1, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Miami has not won at home yet, I am not so sure they will be as tough for as as some think

IMO New England on Thanksgiving is our hardest remaining game. After them I think the Jets will be pretty tough. After them I would say the Packers then Miami.

I put New England over the Jets for two reasons, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. That team simply does not beat itself. That is a game that the Lions will have to take, and play very well to take I might add.

The Jets, while they have arguably the best defense in football, have an average offensive line IMO and a weak quarterback. Our defense is going to have an easier time against them than they did the Giants. Our offense is going to have some rough going too. Beating the Jets will rely more on shutting down the run and protecting the football IMO. If we can do that they are more beatable than some would think.

Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!

I gotta say Jets

Pats have been quite lucky. I watched the Chargers game and even the Vikings game and the defense did not look good at all. Favre litterally just stood there and completed passes. Plus, who’s gonna cover CJ? Wilhite and McCourtey are young and inexperienced. They are gonna have their hands full.

On defense, I saw no named guys like Antawn Barnes and Jonathan Applewite get past their lineman with ease. Deon Branch and Wes Welker shouldn’t be all that tough to handle and they don’t really have a runningback.

On top of all this, the game will be on Thxgiving which means Ford Field will be packed. I actually see us winning against the Pats and losing against the Jets. Jets will be hungry coming into this game after the embarassement last week.

of the year, the Vikings game was deceptively close despite being 24-10. If Suh’s penalty hadn’t reversed the second quarter turnover, and everything else remained the same, the fourth quarter total would have been 17-17. Do we lose in that overtime? Doubt it.

Adequate

Is still adequate, doesn’t matter if the qualifier is ‘barely’ or not.

by Mavyrk on Nov 2, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me put it this way

Barely adequate implies that there are a lot of soon to be replaced players on that line. That many are on their last legs and soon to retire, be released, or not talented enough to be on an NFL roster. This is NOT the case with the Jets. Several of those guys are pro bowlers.

Lets take a look at that line then shall we.

C Nick Mangold: Round 1 pick 29 in 2006. 1 time all pro, 2 time pro bowler.

RG Brandon Moore: Here is a guy that no Lions fan probably knows about, if you want to get to know him better, then check out this article. Here is an excerpt.

His endurance is unquestionable. He can bench press 600 pounds, has played 95 consecutive regular season games and has yet to allow a sack this season for the 5-1 Jets. At 305 pounds, Moore maintains balance, standing stout in protection and exploding on pulls. He trusts his technique and hand placement, rarely abandoning form as he employs counterintelligence from his college days as a defensive tackle, readily identifying a pass rusher’s path and finding ways to advance to another defender.

“He has the biggest voice in this locker room when he chooses to speak,” cornerback Darrelle Revis said.

LG Matt Slauson: Round 6 pick 193 in 2009. While this guy might actually fit your barely adequate label, he is young and still has upside. Unlike the two guys above, whom almost any NFL team would covet to have on their line. Jury is still out on this guy and while some might discount him keep in mind that he did beat out Vladimir Ducasse for the starting job.

RT Damian Woody: Lions fans should be familiar with this guy and while he did not play up to potential here, he seems to have had a resurgence in New York and is back to his high level of play. 2 time prow bowler, 2 time super bowl champion, 2003 Tuesday Morning Quarterback Non-QB Non-RB NFL MVP Award Winner.

LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson: Round 1 pick 4 in 2006. 1 time pro bowler and collegiate all American. I am not even going to bother to further talk about this guy, even Lions fans should know the name and that he is a good player.

So really are you kidding me? The Jets have 3 VERY good linemen in Mangold, Fergeson, and Moore. Woody while he might not quite be a stud anymore is playing well above average and still a solid starter on any line in the NFL. So you have one guy, that is an overachiever that is possibly below average at left guard. And he has a highly touted rookie in the wings breathing up his ass that will likely take that job sooner or later.

No the Jets actually have arguably the best offensive line in football talent wise, and anyone who says otherwise is crazy. Yes they are better at run blocking than pass protection, but they are no mediocre, nor push over line by any means.

by Evilsmurf on Nov 2, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Esmurf they are a very talented group.......but....

That does not always ensure elite performance. Their O Line allows sacks on 4.8% of their passing plays. The Lions only allow 3.8% [third in the NFL]. I’m not sure where the Jets rank overall in the NFL. I doubt it is worse than about 18th.
But the Jets are tremendous in their run blocking. That will be the real challenge for the Lions. They must stop the run and force the Jets to pass and rely on Sanchez.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 3, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

The Jets have allowed fewer sacks than the Lions

We are ranked 7th at 12, and they are 6th at 11 I believe. That is just going off memory but I do know they have given up less sacks than us. My whole point above is that they are a great line. Probably the best run blocking line in football and certainly average or better in pass protection.

Part of the reason they give up more sacks per passing play is because of scheme and flow. On scheme, a lot of their pass plays are max protect with 2-3 routes going out. It results in a lot of coverage sacks. On flow because their offensive line spends so much time run blocking that they are not ready to pass block when asked to. I don’t know if you ever played line, but if you spend all game run blocking, and then are asked to pass block occasionally, your technique is usually poor on the pass block. It has to do with muscle memory, repetition, and mental focus.

At any rate my beef was with calling anything about the Jets offensive line mediocre or barely adequate. I would hands down trade our offensive line for theirs and in my mind it is not something I would need to think about long at all.

we are 6-1 ATS so far this season.

I’ll wait till later in the week, if it goes down to 3, I may just crap my pants.

Lions and Vikings headed in opposite directions

The long term view of the Lions and Vikings look pretty different, if you ask me.
It is pretty amazing how similar the Lions and Vikings are this year, same record against similar strength of schedule: http://sidelionreport.com/2010/11/01/the-lions-are-in-a-better-place-than-the-minnesota-vikings/

You guys can surely spin some words

I love the lions and I know they are improving but your seriously think the rest of the way we go 8-1? I think we could potentially finish 8-8 which means from this point we would be 6-3 and I think that is feasible. But the idea of us being so vastly improved just isn’t right.

I think next year we can make the playoffs with a strong finish this year as a great way to get us going in a positive direction. We can’t afford to pick atop the draft this year because of the salary issues (maybe draft gets a cap?) but ya. That is all :D

A Randy Moss free Season????

Was just on the NFL network and apparently the Vikes have waived Randy Moss…..so unless he goes to the Pats again then we wont have to cover his ass at all this year!!!!!!

Let's celebrate

I won a nice bet yesterday against my liberal Redskins fan! Schwartz finally looked happy….missed postgame interviews. Going forward the Lions are going to be an energized team and will finish ahead of the Vikings and the Bears! Roar!!!!

Not many think about it

The loss of Chester Taylors 3rd down magic is killing this team. Possibly more than anything else.

I agree...

if you can’t sustain drives, you don’t score points and you exploit your defense (a la Lions since Barry retired). Taylor always seemed to get just enough for the 1st down, whether it was 3rd-and-2 or 3rd-and-9. That team is all down hill. AP is relied on too much and runs in a way that he will have a short career, injuries are going to happen, and when they do, they will happen a lot. Also, that oline went from being dominant to being terrible with no sign of hope, and the defense is getting old and they aren’t doing a good job of replacing anyone. They have 6 sacks all season.

Okay, that is surprising. You mean total point differential?

Well, I hope the Lions put an exclamation point on that with a big win over the Jets this weekend.
