9 has to make a decision

  According to M live http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2010/11/detroit_lions_drew_stanton_ind.html#incart_hbx

Drew Stanton said that Matthew stafford has to make a decision.  Kowalski seems to think that surgery is a option this time. In my opinion Matthew longterm would probably be better off with the surgery. I want him to play this year as much if not more than anyone. I also want him to start a full 16 games next season. So while he " Gathers info" I hope he stops to call Sam Bradford and other players who have had the surgery that seem much better off for having it. I know Matthew has a strong will to compete thats one of the reasons I love this guy so much. He also has to think of his future and the team going foreward. Not about how quickly can he get back on the field.

Just for coming out and actually telling us something!

Stanton, I love you!

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!

does anyone know

if the surgery helps prevent the injury from happening again, or if it just heals the injury properly

on whether or not sugery is the right treatment….

The treatment of grade three AC separations is somewhat controversial. Many studies show no difference whether a person is treated with surgery or conservative treatment. Even with surgery, a bump may still be present where the separation occurred. And a significant portion of people who undergo surgery will need another operation later.

Several studies have looked at what happens to the AC joint after this injury. It appears that many people, whether they had the joint repaired surgically or not, will need an operation at some time in the future. The injured joint degenerates faster than normal. Over time it becomes arthritic and painful. This process may take years to develop, but sometimes it happens within one or two years.

CLICK HERE for a visual of the surgery.

The surgery is usually done through a four-inch incision over the AC joint. The surgeon starts by putting the joint into its correct position. A screw or some other type of fixation may be used to hold the clavicle in place while the ligaments heal.

To fix the joint using a screw, the surgeon inserts the screw through the top of the clavicle and into the coracoid process.

Some surgeons use surgical tape to connect the clavicle and coracoid. A small drill hole is made in the clavicle and corocoid. The surgical tape is looped through each hole and pulled snugly.

In some cases, sutures are also used to repair and reinforce the torn coracoclavicular ligaments.

When a screw is used, it is usually removed six to eight weeks after the surgery. If it is not removed, the screw will probably break.

Recovery time for surgery….

After about three months, you will start more active strengthening. Exercises will focus on improving strength and control of the rotator cuff muscles and the muscles around the shoulder blade. Your therapist will help you retrain these muscles to keep the ball of the humerus centered in the socket. This helps your shoulder move smoothly during all your activities.

Recovery from shoulder surgery can take some time. You will need to be patient and stick to your therapy program. Some of the exercises you’ll do are designed get your shoulder working in ways that are similar to your work tasks and sport activities. Your therapist will help you find ways to do your tasks that don’t put too much stress on your shoulder. Before your therapy sessions end, your therapist will teach you a number of ways to avoid future problems.

Recovery time for non-surgery…

If you don’t need surgery, range-of-motion exercises should be started as pain eases, followed by a program of strengthening. At first, exercises are done with the arm kept below shoulder level. The program advances to include strength exercises for the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles. In most cases, the pain goes away almost completely within three weeks.
Full recovery can take up to six weeks for grade two separations and up to 12 weeks for grade three separations

. Since there is little danger of making the condition worse, you can usually do whatever activities you can tolerate.

What ever he chooses...

His shoulder is fucked for the rest of his life….

This stuck out to me.

Holy Hell

Maybe everyone posting about at least preparing to have to look for another quarterback isn’t as off their rocker as initially thought.

OH, don't misinterpet me...

I think Stafford will have a normal NFL career… 8-10 years or so… but I’m talking after the NFL… and late into his life.

Thats how I feel

I can’t see Matt walking away becuse of that either. He is a competitor…Hell most retired players have alot more problems than arthritis

$42 million guaranteed

I feel for him, but that’s a lot of money to compensate a guy for a bad shoulder.

I am still not gonna agree with that

Uh I don't know about that

My friend is a physical sports therapist, She’s a head trainer on a single A base ball team, she said with time and physical therapy, his shoulder would be fine. Everything else looked good.

I think you have it backwards....

you are on HBP Medication BECAUSE you’re a Lions fan.

I suggest a strong dose of cialis to increase your hearts stamina and strength.

I am one of the ones who did not have surgery

and still have periodic pain and swelling. I used to have a cannon for an arm, but back when I played baseball after the injury, I could only throw like my old self with a cortisone shot, and that only helped for a few weeks.

It was 3rd & 7; Delhomme dropped to pass
"Man, I hope, I don't get knocked on my ass"
He felt twisting and clawing, "When will it stop?"
Then SUH ripped his head off, like a bottle of pop!!

Yeah, I'm a Lions fan

I can see this playing out one of two ways

1) Schwartz is going to be pissed because someone released his “precious”.

2) This was initiated by Schwartz to leak out a little information, while not giving out too much, thus backing the press and fan pressure off him a little without losing his aura of propaganda information chief.

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!

by joshsun on Nov 12, 2010 12:54 PM EST reply actions

Drew just said he needs to make a decision

Kowalskis guess is it’s surgery..I don’t think Drew leaked anything..They could say he’s getting engaged to his gf lol..who knows but that just seems like the likely “decision”. I don’t see how they can come back on stanton for that. I see it as Jim said if your asked say this and leave it alone.

Did I mention..I love the Phonz!

by The Profiler on Nov 12, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Technically he didnt even say he would make the decison, he said whatever decision is made we will move forward with

Though you would think from the context of the discussion it is Matthew’s decision, he could just be using bad terminology to relate what he is trying to say. He could be talking about the teams decision to IR Matthew, or even the decision of who will be the starter from week to week. While I tend to think it is a surgery not surgery thing as most do, I am not 100% confident in that.

Here's my guess

Starting this week and the rest of the season it will be a game to game till Stafford ops for the surgey. We win and their put off that choice for another week.

My thought is Schwartz is a crazy bastard and knows they could be 6-2 just as easy as being 2-6 right now. And probably still thinks winning 7 out of 8 is unlikely but is not counting them out yet.

Once there’s no hope at all for the season He’ll be I.R’d

by msivits on Nov 12, 2010 1:27 PM EST reply actions

that is risking too much

We saw what happened the last time Staff returned too soon. to do that again would be moronic.

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!

Matthew Stafford

At this point I want him to shut it down for the rest of the season. As much as I want to see him play again this year we need to think of the future and let him heal properly so we don’t keep dealing with these injuries re-curring every year.

by Detroitsportsfan3 on Nov 12, 2010 1:32 PM EST reply actions

I read an article...

earlier today that said Stafford will NOT go on IR. I’m having trouble finding it. It may mean that Staff will return for the last couple of games, maybe to get some experience in. And did somebody say playoffs? I want what you’re smoking.

by Alowicious on Nov 12, 2010 1:43 PM EST reply actions

With the lockout looming....

If he goes on ir, we may well not see him till ‘12….and what with the scheduled ’end of the world’ he still wont be able to complete a full season ;)

Surgery

I have heard that if Andrews does the surgery he will replace the whole should socket with the new titanium model. It is guaranteed to do more damage to whatever it hits.
