3rd WR..... Lions still looking for the right guy....

Kevin Curtis?   Personally, I think he fits in the classification of a Shaun MacDonald and Mike Furrey type.

I'm just glad the FO never stops looking....

per the Killa...

http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2010/11/cowboys_roy_williams_reflects.html

There was a measure of irony Wednesday when Lions coach Jim Schwartz addressed the media about the lack of production from Bryant Johnson because, just a few yards away, the Lions were working out veteran free-agent receiver Kevin Curtis.

Losing BJ would be swell

But I think Detroit needs a #2 WR, not a #3 slot guy. Burleson is utterly forgettable out wide, but he’s a force in the slot.

It’s one of the reasons I have a bit of a man-crush on AJ Green in this year’s draft.

by AJSmitty on Nov 18, 2010 11:09 AM EST reply actions

Or perhaps because his name starts with "AJ"...eh!?

I can’t think of getting a WR that high, but I understand the appeal. Green is supposed to be the next no-miss prospect at WR since CJ and our passing attack would be freaking feirce. Dare I say the best in the league…but still, it’s too painful to think of passing up on a shutdown Corner or true pass threat of a DE…

I personally hope that Green is gone before we pick.

I don’t even want to be tempted to draft a WR, even though the guy looks amazing.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 18, 2010 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

I think Carolina will take a long look at him

This really should be a fun draft though. There’s a lot of blue chippers at the top, nobody I have my heart set on, and a GM whose drafting acumen I trust.

I’m going to be pretty psyched about whoever Detroit gets. I also think there’s a good chance that Mayhew will look to get up into the first round again, a la last year. The man loves himself some first round picks.

Earlier in the season

I was roasted for saying the Nate is far better served playing in the slot as a #3. People called me all sorts of fun things. I am glad other people are starting to see the same things in him.

DrewsLions was right and I was wrong. Stafford did in fact post a QB rating better than 89.7, he put up a 90.2 rating. I have not been happy about being wrong in so long!

by joshsun on Nov 18, 2010 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

I say we give tim toone a chance :)

by Lions on the prowl on Nov 18, 2010 11:17 AM EST reply actions

I could be making this up, but I think he’s on IR with a broken leg. Mike Moore also recently went on the practice squad IR list.

by AJSmitty on Nov 18, 2010 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Toone is indeed on the practice squad IR

and yes Moore just joined him recently.

Recced you and agree emphatically.

This has been an ongoing mystery for me this year. The only theory as to why D.Williams is not playing is that he must be absolutely brutal in the practices. I wish one of the Lions beat writers would address this some time.

Do they not see Derrick Williams practice? Or are the Lions keeping him under wraps for some reason?

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 18, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

I don't understand it either NL...

You know that I’ve been a pretty big Schwartz supporter this year, but these last 7 games, while I’m not saying Schwartz should be fired, will go a long way in how is look at his reign.

Is he going to stay the course and not make changes? Is he going say enough is enough with the penalty abusers and sit them?(sorry)

Are players like AB, DW, and yes even Mr. West Point going to see the field. Actually with the injuries and special team injuries, I’m surprised he hasn’t been brought in off of the practice squad for a look.

by delusional on Nov 18, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

It's okay I promise not to freak out about the penalty talk. LOL

I’ll save that for the other thread.

I also agree with you about Schwartz. I am still a big supporter, but I have been disappointed in some of his decisions, on and off the field. Hopefully, he is learning and developing the confidence in himself and his team to make better decisions in the future.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 18, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Actually you did good in starting that thread because it brought into focus..

Not just from you, but also from everyone involved what ground zero is involving this teams problems.

Until those issues are corrected, were going to struggle.

by delusional on Nov 18, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

DW was always a "huh"? pick to me...

Sure, like everyone else I justified it by pointing to his return skills as well as being a compatent receiver…

But he has been neither.

by CLF on Nov 18, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

to be fair

The few times he played he looked ok. He had 2 good catches this season. He had atleast one TD I can think of this pre-season. I think he looked better than BJ in the pre-season for sure.

Did I mention..I love the Phonz!

by The Profiler on Nov 18, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

I just don't get it

I won’t say he looks like calvin out there but I haven’t seen him play bad enough to atleast not warrant giving him a shot to play 3rd reciver. I think at this point in the season you have to say BJ hasn’t had enough production lets atleast give the kid a try. I think even people (like yourself) that aren’t big fans of him have come to that conclusion.

Did I mention..I love the Phonz!

'we' might not know what he can do...

but the coaches have had plenty of time to learn what he can do. the fact that he cant beat out alligator arms in garbage time says a lot. hes as good as gone. hell, he might be the player cut if they sign KC.

by haywood on Nov 18, 2010 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

Sign Curtis

Let him and Derrick fight for the spot. I think Williams deserves to get some playing time. He’s been here 2 years give the guy a freakin shot!

Did I mention..I love the Phonz!

by The Profiler on Nov 18, 2010 11:49 AM EST reply actions

Derrick Williams

Their is no way the guy can be worse than Bryant Johnson so give him a shot or sign Curtis please. I don’t want Bryant Johnson getting playing time anymore.

by Detroitsportsfan3 on Nov 18, 2010 1:09 PM EST reply actions

I think the problem with Derrick Williams...

is that he is a slot guy, and so is Burleson, so Bryant is a no.2 type WR and Burleson is our slot guy but due to talent they are reversed. So DW is more of a no.4 type guy as long as Burleson is on the roster, imo. We need a solid guy who can run deep post routes and be a viable threat in the redzone, like what BJ is supposed to be if he had hands.

by lions_sucker on Nov 18, 2010 2:46 PM EST reply actions

Burleson and Calvin as wideouts

Kevin Smith and Jahvid Best in the slots. Shotgun formation, Pettigrew next to Stafford in the backfield for protection or going out for a short pass.

It is Madden

Other coaches would be like. WTF. And not know what to do, so it would work!

If you look at the way Mayhew trades guys like Roy Williams that only happens in madden. lol

Very good point. And Alphonso Smith

Shit!!!

You would never get that many picks for Roy Williams. They are real stingy with the draft picks on Madden.

Williams or Tune

get the value out of the draft picks.

Toone, hahaha.

I remember seeing Toone in the August Ford Field practice and he made a sick move for the streak. I don’t think it would hurt the Lions to get some of these guys in game experience.

Bryant Johnsons gotta step up tho. I hope his boys give him shit.

BJohnson's spot

He’s a pretty big guy. He should be downfield catching jump balls like they do with St. Calvin. They need someone that can work underneath. I know that Nate could do that too, but, hell, I’ll just say it.

Throw the frickin’ ball more!! We’ve got so many weapons, they should all get at least 5 a game. That means if we’re throwing less than 50 times a game, we’re underproducing. In my mind, that would be:

15 to Calvin (at least 4 over 20 yards downfield)
8 to Burleson
7 to Grew
5 to Scheff
5 to Best
10 to BJohnson/WR4/other

That’s reasonable, right…right?!

Oh Yeah!!!

by hb.koolaid on Nov 18, 2010 7:57 PM EST reply actions

No team should be throwing the ball that much.

That’s why, even though its not working well, you have to throw in at least twenty runs a game.

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 19, 2010 6:00 AM EST up reply actions

50 times a game?

Hell Miami didn’t even run 50 plays last night.

by CLF on Nov 19, 2010 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

I'd like to see DW get more of a go

But Curtis has some field stretching speed. I wouldn’t be against picking him up.

I say we give the Albino Squirril a chance!

If he still has the speed he had with the Eagles.
