Lions Notes: Jim Schwartz Declines To Respond To Rex Ryan's Trash Talk (For The Most Part)
- During a conference call with the Detroit media earlier this week, Jets coach Rex Ryan said that the NFL's best defense is coming to town on Sunday. He also added this when asked about the Lions potentially keeping up their high-scoring ways on Sunday:
"Nope," Ryan said. "I don’t believe that’s going to happen. Hey, they could come out and prove me wrong, but I doubt it. This is a proud group right here on defense. We haven’t really been healthy. We’re just now getting healthy and like I said, you’ll see. This is an excellent defense."
Jim Schwartz declined to get into a trash-talking contest, but he did take a little bit of a shot at Ryan by saying this when asked about the Jets defense:
"They’re really good at stopping the run," Schwartz said. "They’ve done a good job of putting the pressure on the quarterback. I think they have what, 15 sacks? I think we have 22. I think that’s what it is."
The Lions actually have 23 sacks, but point taken. - C.C. Brown and Isaiah Ekejiuba have missed practice this week.
- Kevin Smith was limited on Wednesday and sidelined from practice on Thursday.
- Shaun Hill returned to practice on Thursday, taking reps as the third-string quarterback. It doesn't look like he will dress this week, though.
- Amari Spievey, the man who would step in as a starter if Brown is unable to play, is getting more comfortable with the safety position.
- As mentioned in a FanShot, Ndamukong Suh was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month and Stefan Logan was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October.
- NFL.com posted a "Sound FX" video from the Lions' win over the Redskins. Suh and Jahvid Best are mic'd up for the video.
- An unnamed NFL scout said the following about Suh:
Ndamukong Suh is probably one of the top three or four rookies I’ve seen. He’s definitely solidified the front of the Lions’ defense—I think even more than Kyle Vanden Bosch. Suh is a guy who can do it all. He can play with power, and he can play with quickness to rush the passer. He’s not 330 pounds, but he plays strong and stout like that.
Like I said on Wednesday and like the scout said above, Suh can do it all. - Suh went on PTI earlier this week. Matthew Stafford
Calvin Johnsonwas on ESPN as well, stopping by Rome Is Burning (I couldn't find a video of the interview). - Jets defensive backs apparently think Calvin Johnson is like LeBron James on the football field because of his size and athleticism.
- Tom Lewand said earlier this week that activity "has picked up on tickets for the rest of the season," which is great to hear.
- Former Lions defensive tackle Grady Jackson has signed with the UFL's Florida Tuskers.
- Only three teams claimed Shawne Merriman and the Lions weren't one of them.

I'm not sure if Calvin was on Rome this week.
But Stafford definitely was (I think Tuesday). I think Calvin may have been on recently though but I missed that one. Its not like anybody on this team is worth interviewing since they all give the same monotonous answers with the exception of maybe Nate Burleson.
Also, I don’t think Cavlin should be compared to that ass in Miami. I’d take that as an insult and want to beat the Jet’s d-backs even more!
Suh for DROY!
Megatron was on first take on Tuesday.
Not much to that interview.

It was Stafford
that was on Rome. I love this quote from Schwartz. "Coach Jim Schwartz on Jets’ CB Darrelle Revis: “He’s a great player. He’s really proven himself. He hasn’t been 100-percent healthy this year, mainly because that happens when you miss all of training camp.”
How is Ryan trash talking?
I’m not here to start a fight with you guys. The Lions are actually my favorite NFC team since watching Barry Sanders when I was little.
But how is Rex Ryan saying that he thinks his D can hold the Lions O to fewer points than they normally score trash talk? Isn’t that the goal of every coach? He didn’t say anything specifically negative against anyone on the Offense. He didn’t claim the Jets would hold them under 10 points. So what exactly is the trash talk? I’m curious as to how you guys look at it.
I see this same basic post every week about Rex’s trash talking, and the quotes never seem like all that big of a deal to me. Obviously I’m biased towards Ryan, but it just seems like reporters like to turn anything he says into a war of words. Hell, they even baited your coach into making sly remarks in response.
Personally
I don’t really see that as trash talking. I see it as him trying to get a little jab in to get the Lions worked up and hopefully not thinking right. Hoping they start thinking about scoring as many points as possible and not really thinking about a game plan.
The Jets have given up less points and yards (I think they are 7th overall where as we are 21st). However, I like the fact that the Jets have 15 sacks to the Lions 23 and the Jets have 6 ints to the Lions 8.
We're skittish from the losing seasons.
That, compounded with mostly low levels of respect from the mainstream sports media can set even the most level-headed of us off when the better aspects of our team are brushed off because, after all, we’re the Lions. Hence Rex thinking the Jets defense, which really hasn’t played up to its billing early in the season, can hold the Lions offense, which has been largely impressive contrary to the disaster over the past couple seasons being seen as trash talking. Especially when Rex is viewed as a shit-talker. I mean, at least from KSK Kharacterizations.

He's colorful, and he's not afraid of yacking something other then "coachspeak" canned quotes.
Reporters love him because he gives them something interesting to write about, and up comes the “trash talking” angle to it.
Schwartz, with his comeback, and look on his face when saying it, pretty much said Rex is full of it about how dominating your D is. 23 to 15 QB sacks, that says a little.
I think it's refreshing...
to hear a coach say something other than, “We are taking this one game at a time.” I think with the advent of Belichick’s success, other coaches think his way of doing things is the best. And since his press conferences are about as interesting as watching a plant grow, it has become standard for head coaches to be dull.
Ryan approaches it differently and actually says what’s on his mind. This approach opens him up to being accused of trash talk every week, but I just think he’s being candid.
I enjoyed the Hard Knocks show. Rex is a real card, I don't dislike him at all.
I also thought it exposed Sanchez as an immature little boy that couldn’t lead the team’s water boy.
I agree
Especially if you look at his response to Schwartz’s response.
“On Jim Schwartz comments that the Lions have more sacks than the Jets and if the Jets’ 15 sacks is enough…
It depends on if you need one at the time. Clearly, you want to get sacks and turnovers. My comment about the best defense in the National Football League coming to town was based on them (Detroit) averaging 38 points a game. One of their reporters asked me, “Do you think they’ll score 38 (points) this week?” I was like, ‘No. The best defense in the league is coming to town. There’s no way you’re scoring 38. I don’t believe that (you’re going to score 38 points).’ Whether that’s a shot across our bow that we only have 15 sacks, that’s fine with me. That’s good. They ought to be proud of the fact that they have more sacks than we do and more turnovers than we do at this point. That’s something that you can judge. You generally want to judge yourself against the best, so judge yourself against ours. That makes sense to me that you would do it and be proud of it. "
Its trash talking
When the first thing you say is “the best defense in the NFL is coming to town” (even though the Jets are only the 7th best overall defense and 18th against the pass)thats trash talking. Personally, I think statements like that are simply unprofessional. You’re a coach, your job is to coach your team, teach decipline. You usually see 25 year old players making statements like this not a 47 year old fatty.
The beginning of the end of the misery
Trash talking? No.
Arrogant boasting that isn’t backed up by the facts? Yes.
Rexy Ryan is who he is and some people like it, some people don’t, and in the end I don’t really think he cares either way.
Personally, I don’t really know what I think. He’s not dull, and I guess I like that, but he also doesn’t seem overly professional, and I don’t really care for that. But no, I wouldn’t say it was “trash talking” in the typical sense.
In my opinion, he’s absolutely right that the lions won’t score 38. But I’m pretty sure they won’t hold the lions below their 15.7 average points allowed per game either. Like everyone else for as long as I can remember, he’s underestimating the lions and not giving them the respect they deserve. So it’s not quite trash talking, just a healthy dose of disrespect.

Hey I've been thinking the same thing. Ryan is stating what he thinks will happen, and he is promoting his squad.
Rex Ryan has a rep now as a trash talker- The back & forth with New England last season definitely gained him lots of notoriety.
But I’m with you JG, I hear and see no trash talking. It comes much more from players than it does from self-respecting coaches in my opinion.

Slightly off topic, but...
…I hate how now that we’re playing competitive football, the community is overflowing with assholes who feel the need to just insult everyone else because they’re fans of another team.
This garbage doesn’t happen on my favored baseball team’s blog and I am really disappointed it happens so much here.

Now that's just silly-talk.
The Mets were “in it” in 2010 until the Tigers left town and we started losing and the Phillies and Braves kept winning. 2009 was a wash due to key injuries, but 2005-2008 were highly competitive with 2007 leaving us one hit away from the World Series.

ESPN'S First Take
Lots of Lions love on first take today, skip bayless calling for the Lions to beat the Jets, Stink says best front four in pro football excepting Giants
Skip Bayless picking the Lions is not a good sign.
Though it does mean the media is coming around. Bayless is a buffoon who chronically grabs hold of the first knee jerk reaction available.
Except.
The fact that he still had the cowboys going to the playoffs as a 1-5, and isn’t counting himself out at 1-6 either.
He’s not wishy washy. He may have very well held the conviction that Detroit’s good all year, he’s just never had a reason to talk about it.
Spivey better gets more comfortable with the safety position
He got burned badly last week and really looked out of position there.
Meh
He gave up a big play and he made a big play. He’s a rookie.
You can’t forget that the lame duck McNabb threw up that got intercepted by Smith was such a lame duck because Spivey came through the line and hit McNabb on the arm as he threw.
It’s always going to be trick or treat out there for him, evenwhen the game isn’t on Halloween.
Rex Ryan
I love the fact that Rex Ryan is actually taking the Lions as a threat now, that shows other coaches fear our team. With that said he’s going to see who has the best defensive line in the NFL up close and personal on Sunday.

I liked how Schwartz went to data & left it there.
15 sacks vs. 23. Ice Cold Schwartz.

To those who might be intrested
I sent a E mail to NFL playbook regarding the Lions and if they have the abillity to make a late season push. If it comes up I will certainly let eveyone know.
You can't keep the Pain Train off the tracks!
Me fail english thats umpossible
rex responds again,

Generally you want to judge yourself against the best, so judge yourself against our defense. That makes sense to me.”
wow, they are throwing jabs back and forth
He’s hoping that the Lions will help back up The Swartz’s words. For once, id like to shut someones mouth in this league.
Thats a pretty good reply
I can’t wait for the game! I’ll be there cheering my Lions!

Well he has a point
Rex has a creatice way of making every comment look like it was a slap in his face. Truth be told I do like Rex he goes over board at times. He takes all the attention off his team and they get a swagger from there head coach. I realise why alot of people hate him too. Thats why alot people hated Buddy too he says the things you don’t wann hear. He belives in his team and abillitys to the point of arogance. Truth is though come game time Rex knows how to win. He has a proven defensive system and knows the exact personal he needs to run it. I had hoped that when we were looking for a new coach that if we could land Schwartz or Rex would be set. While they both have diffrent schemes and almost exact opposite styles they are without a doubt 2 of the most defensive geniuses around. I wouldn’t trade Jim for anyother HC right now but I do respect what Rex does in NY and it all stems from his body of work in Baltimore. Same as Jim he has worked with MANY great coaches over the years has a diffrent philosphy then Rex in every way BUT his line of work in Tennesee speaks for itself. These guys both know what it takes to build a Great Defense…They are both showing proof right now. I have no doubt that the Jets and Lions will long term be 2 of the best D’s in the NFL.
He's gonna smell like hotdogs.

Hopefully there will be no more blackouts for you guys.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
This game was announced as a sell out at noon on wednesday.
Any chance of a black out was eliminated halfway through the week.
