The Weekend Spotlight - Week 9 Edition

Good Afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another edition of the Weekend Spotlight.  I am your host, KDawg.  The eighth installment of my weekly series has the Detroit Lions battling the New York Jets, at Home in Detroit, MI, at Ford Field.  Coming off of a HUGE week 8 win against the Redskins, my expectations for the Lions are once again very high.  I write this week's post amidst the feeling that I do not have the time to be doing it, and that only a select few people read it anyway, but still I choose to babble on and let my voice be heard.  Needless to say, I am SO ramped up for this game that it is ridiculous!  I am very excited to say that I will be AT this game in person, with some of our fellow POD members.  This makes the game even more important to me, but it can not possibly be more important for me than it is for the Lions.

This is the chance the Lions have been waiting for.  Should the Lions WIN this game against a highly touted Jets team, then not only are WE the fans going to go through the roof of Ford Field, but also the Lion players are REALLY going to start to BELIEVE that they CAN have a winning season THIS YEAR!  The Lions are now 2-5 on the season, but we all know that their record does not reflect the talent and ability that this team has, nor does it reflect their potential to beat some very good teams right NOW.  With 8 weeks of the regular season already behind us, once again I will reveal who I believe will be the key players, on the Lion's offense and defense, for a Lion VICTORY!

This weeks injury report shows that the Lions will be without C.C. Brown (knee) and Isaiah Ekejiuba (knee) for sure, and of course Shaun Hill is listed as doubtful with the broken left forearm.  Ashlee Palmer (hamstring) and Kevin Smith (knee) are both questionable (both were limited all week in practice and Smith DNP on Wednesday), and Louis Delmas (ankle, LP all week) and Brandon Pettigrew (ankle, LP all week) are listed as probable, while Jahvid Best (toe), Bryant Johnson (foot), Calvin Johnson (shoulder), DeAndre Levy (ankle), Turk McBride (ankle), and Matthew Stafford (foot) all practiced fully all week while being listed as probable as well.  On the other side of the ball, the Jets only list 4 players, all probable, on their injury report, and they are Brodney Pool (head, LP all week), David Harris (back, DNP Tuesday, FP Wed and Thur), Calvin Pace (foot, FP all week), and Darelle Revis (hamstring, FP all week).

As usual, I will provide you with the logic behind the reasoning for my picks, including stats.  The Jets are a decent team, but I would not say that their defense is the best in the league by any stretch of the imagination, certainly not as good as the Giant's D, and I would say that their offense is about as good as St. Louis or Washington's.  I would not likely rank them as high as Green Bay, Philadelphia, the Giants, Chicago or even Minnesota overall (if not for the traditional end of the game INT by Brett Favre that went for 6, then the Jets win by 2...and if not for the 5 field goals by Nick Folk, or even if he just missed one or did not get one of the chances, then the Vikings win that game).  In fact, despite their record (they have some VERY shaky wins so far) and historical trends, I believe that the Jets are the third worse team that we will have faced so far (ahead of the Rams and Redskins, but not by much).  VICTORY can be ours, and I'll tell you why and how as the WS W8E begins after the jump...

Star-divide

I want to start off this week by mentioning the fact that Rex Ryan is a jackass.  Did you know that?  I am sure you did.  Listen, I don't know where this guy thinks he is coming from, or who he thinks he is fooling, but the Jets do NOT have the best defense in the league.  They do not even have the best run defense in the league (ranked 4th), and their passing defense has been less than stellar this season (ranked 18th).  I certainly hope that behind the scenes his words are motivating the Lions to prove him wrong, as much as they have angered me and made me wish that the Lions would ram it down their throats all day long so he could choke on it.  Maybe then he would shut his pie hole, but maybe that is too much to ask for...

Furthermore, the Jets defense is ranked 7th in the NFL in total yards allowed per game.  There are TWO defenses ahead of them in the rankings that we have already faced this year.  While we did not win either of those games, and while our offense did not light the world on fire in those games, we DID manage put up 21 to beat the Bears, and their #6 total defense in week 1 (I know, I know...thanks to poor officiating it was only 14 and we lost, but we all know better), and we put up 20 against the #2 ranked total defense of the Giants in week 6, nearly winning that game with our backup QB at the helm.  The Jets run a 3-4 defense, and just like Washington and Green Bay it is fashioned after the Steeler's defense.  However, just like Washington, the Jets do not create the pressure that Pittsburgh is so successful at bringing, and with their pass defense lacking this year they also have not been overly successful at creating turnovers.  Once again, the effectiveness of what they are trying to emulate on defense is in serious question, and i doubt they will cause our offense any more trouble than Washington did when it comes to the passing game.  I am sure we will see a lot of shifting by the linebackers, a lot of zone blitz attempts, and a lot of different looks to try to confuse young Stafford, but I think our young leader is more than ready, willing, and able to handle the task.

Offensively, I think the Lions are going to struggle to run the ball, as has been the norm for them so far.  The Jets are very solid against the run, but that does not mean that we will, or should, abandon that aspect of the game.  The Lions need to make an effort to establish some sort of running game, even if it is just enough to keep the Jet's linebackers honest.  As previously stated, I think Stafford will get the job done in the passing game, and I do not feel that the Lions will have any trouble passing the ball.  This week is going to be about whether or not the Jets think that Revis can shut Calvin Johnson down one on one, and whether or not Calvin Johnson can make big plays for us against him.  As such, I am naming Calvin Johnson as my key player on offense this week, to a Lion victory.

I am not totally convinced that the Jets will not try to match Cromartie up against CJ this week, however, as he has clearly been the better defender against the pass for the Jets this season (he has 13 pass deflections, 21 tackles, and 2 INTs vs Revis' 3 PDs, 10 tackles, and 0 INTs).  Many would argue that teams do not throw at Revis, but I think the Patriots and Vikings clearly looked to expose him against Randy Moss.  Revis has had hamstring issues this season, and it has been claimed that he is 100% healthy now...so we will just have to wait and see about that.  IF Revis in matched up on Calvin Johnson one on one, then I surely hope that the Lions coaching staff takes advantage of his clear size advantage.  I feel that CJ's size alone makes it a mismatch against Revis, and while Revis can likely run with CJ all day, he most assuredly can't leap high enough to beat CJ for any jump balls.  IF Calvin Johnson can use his size to his advantage, IF Linehan will call the plays to utilize CJ, and IF Matt Stafford can make the proper throws, then Calvin Johnson might just light "Revis Island" on fire Sunday.

Defensively, the Lions face the #3 rushing offense in the NFL.  On the bright side, the Jets are only ranked 18th in the league in passing.  Clearly, the Lions would do themselves justice to follow the example of the Packers last week by going all out against the run.  By doing so, they would force Mark Sanchez to beat them with his wet noodle.  Sanchez is definitely not the QB that even Donovan McNabb has been this season, and to even try to compare him to Brett Favre, Eli Manning, or Aaron Rodgers would be silly and pointless.  Honestly, I think Sam Bradford is a far superior QB and I am not even certain that he could give Jay Cutler or Vick/Kolb a run for their money in the passing department.  I would categorize Sanchez in with the likes of Alex Smith, Chad Henne, and Jason Campbell...servicable, but not a guy who can control a game with his arm.  That said, I think the key to the Lions beating the Jets this week will be stopping LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene from controlling the game on the ground and running wild.

With that end in mind, I think it will be paramount that our defensive ends do not over pursue this week.  Even though D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Damien Woody are clearly beatable on the ends, I think that our ends need to do a very good job at reading run or pass before they just try to blow up the QB on every play.  Both Tomlinson and Greene have the speed to get to the outside, and if our DEs over pursue too many times, they will get beat to the outside and LT and SG will be in our defensive backfield creating havoc.  The middle of the Jets offensive line is their greatest strength, in my opinion, with Nick Mangold.  However, Corey Williams and Ndamukong Suh have been out of control in the middle of our defensive line this season, and Mangold is only going to be able to help block one of them.

As such, and because of the fact that I think the All Pro center will be doubling Suh all day long, I am naming Corey Williams as my key defensive player for a Lion victory this week.  RG Matt Slauson knows Suh personally, as they were team mates in college.  I am betting that he is either scared to death right now, or he thinks he can get the job done...one way or the other.  We may actually see Mangold and Moore doubling Williams early on, as we saw last week against Washington, but my bet would be that Suh will dominate Slauson if that happens, which will force Mangold to shade his way sooner than later.  If, and when, that occurs...then Corey Williams will turn it up a notch and he will dominate Brandon Moore.  One way or another, the Jets tackles are going to have their hands full with Avril and KVB, so that will leave 3 men to block 2 DTs.  If the interior O-line doubles one DT or the other, then I believe the DT in the one on one matchup will dominate.  I believe it will be Suh who draws the most double teams, and therefore Williams that dominates.  With any luck Williams will be in the Jets backfield all day long, forcing the running backs to act and react to his presence, change directions, and hopefully get stuffed.

In conclusion, I think this is going to be a great game to watch.  I am happy for everyone that it is a sold out game, and I am really looking forward to meeting some of you PODers this weekend.  I think that the words of Jim Schwartz say it best, and since I can not say it better I will conclude with his quotes;

“There are a lot of challenges for us this game,” Lions’ head coach Jim Schwartz said. “We need to protect our quarterback, we need to be able to run the ball, we need to be able to make big plays and we need to be able to sustain drives. Those things are difficult to do.

“On defense we need to be able to stop the run and we need to be able to take away big play players like their wide receivers and their tight ends.”

http://www.detroitlions.com/news/article-1/Week-9-Game-Preview-Lions-vs-Jets/f936eef5-9f0d-41de-8cc4-236ef0369a84

If we can establish some sort of run game, keep Stafford on his feet, sustain drives by passing the ball effectively, allow our play-makers to make big plays on offense while also stopping the run and taking away the big play threats on defense, then the Lions WILL win this week!  And that is all I have to say about that.  As always, I hope the refs do not beat us, and I hope that the Lions play a well disciplined, mistake free game.   This has been KDawg, and you have been reading the eighth regular season edition of The Weekend Spotlight!  Happy Football Sunday ladies and gentlemen, and GOOOOOOOOOO LIOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNSS!!!!!

My main fears are yours also

-I think the Lions might as well come out throwing, setting up the run by throwing early and often, with the hope of having a running game in the 2nd half.

-On the D side I say go for broke, blitz early and blitz often. Sanchez is in his 2nd year also like Stafford and could be prone for mistakes.

-CB’s Smith and Houston need to have big games…

Most certainly be aggresive

Because we have players that will actually follow through and play till the end of a play. In Suh, Fonz, KVB, Delmas

Calvin Johnson- Robot in disguise.

by Lionsfan8 on Nov 5, 2010 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the Lions will need to blitz more than they usually do.

But the Blitzes should be run blitzes, rather than all out pass blitzes. A msivits says, this will put more pressure on our corners, but I think they are up to the challenge.

Keep on writing KDawg. It is always good to hear a variety of takes on the games.

First on Rex Ryan

He comes across to me as one of those people. That shout out random thoughts. And because he says it louder than anyone else. What ever he says it must be true.

My keys to the game. Stop the Jets running game. Keep Sanchez in long yardage situations. 2nd and long. 3rd and long. Get some pressure on him. Force him to make decisions he does not want to make. For the Lions. Keep Stafford upright. Get some product from our running game. NO stupid penalties. BALL PRODUCTION. Yeah I am talking about Nate.

Keep writing my brother. I always look forward to your write-up.

Nate, word!

This is a good read, keep it up. I love the depth you go ti, with insights into the opponents past games and stuff, not everyone here is an NFL fan and when guys like us give insights to games others might not have watched, I think it adds real value to the site overall.

With that being said, Let me give you some thoughts back this week, just so you know that I do read it and you will see how meaningless my responses would be LoL.

Rex Ryan: His style is a double edged sword, all of that swagger and boasting, gives his team a certain bravado and confidence, and desire to live up to his praise. However it also paints a big target on their back. Overall I feel it beings more good than bad, but sometimes it will come up to bite you in the ass. There is no arguing that he has the Jets playing better than several coaches that preceded him.

Lions Running game, with Kevin Smiths kneed banged up last week, I expect to see more Jahvid. I think that is the wrong way to go though and I just pray that Linehand pulls his head out of his bum regarding Jerome Felton and gives him more power runs. Felton had some horrible drops but I still think he a solid runner and as good a of compliment to Best as anyone else on the team. A dark horse prediction would be an Aaron Brown sighting in this game. His hand is well enough to play and we did see some bursts from him last year. I would not be surprised to see him play a few snaps and make a big play or two.

Calvin v Revis is not going to happen IMO. Not only is Cromartie the better physical match up, another tall long armed, long striding, jump ball player, but I think he is the better corner so far this year. And what a surprise and luxury that has been for the Jets. Also against Moss, the Jets put Cromartie on him a lot the 2nd time they seen him. Rex already planted a escape route earlier by saying that Revis plays left side and Cromartie plays right side, that they don’t match up players. IMO that left a back door for him to explain away why Revis was not on Calvin the whole game.

It may be odd to say this, but IMO the Lions should throw at Revis and Kyle Wilson if he plays nickle. One thing that should be noted too, is that their safety Leonard, might be the most underrated safety in the NFL. He is one of those guys that does not have the measurable numbers or look flashy, but just gets it done over and over.

So now you see how meaningless the things are when I read your stuff, not much value there and nothing that is a huge disagreement with your point of view. It is more like random, musings that are spawned off your thoughts than anything.

I should add

That the elephant in the room no one is mentioning, is the fact that Amari Spievey is going to be starting and could very well completely implode our secondary, giving up big play after big play to an offense that is not normally able to make big plays. If Amari gets burned though I have faith that he will tough it out, and not crumble, while he could very well cost us a win, it will be invaluable experience for him to be in there this game and should go a long way to paying dividends for later down the road.

+1...I've been mentioning this all week.

This opens up a whole new scenario as to how to attack our back 7. He’s either going to have to show early in the game that he knows what the hell he’s doing back there, or it’s going to one long day for the kid.

His tape is UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by delusional on Nov 6, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree also

And in all honesty, I think Dante Wesley might do a better job back their at this point….but neither one of them make me feel safe. This is one of the most glaring holes on our defense for sure. Dante Wesley has 9 years of experience, and he is much bigger than Spievey. He is not likely as athletic though, and certainly Spievey has more upside potential at this point.

All we can do is hope that the rook can get in there and get the job done…and if he can’t, we have to hope that Schwartz will yank him.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Nov 6, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Delmas is going to have to play out of his head tomorrow.

I do have faith that they’ll figure out a scheme to “hide” Spievey’s weaknesses. Like have him playing up in run support a little more then normal which he is good at.

by delusional on Nov 6, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree Esmurf. The Jets hit some big pass plays against the Packers last week.

They had three over 32 yards. That’s what will happen when you sell out against the run, like the Pack did.

Hard to believe all the “woe is me” now that CC will not be able to play. Seemed to me like most on here could not understand how CC made the team, and CC continued to play. Perhaps we should give Gunther and Schwartz a little more credit.

Personally, I think the move to Amari has been in the works for weeks. The coaches were getting him more reps in practices with the first string, and more snaps in the actual games too. Maybe, he will not be 100% ready, but nobody ever is. I think the Lions can scheme a bit to protect him and not expose him too much. That is, if they are really worried about it.

C.C. was an all or nothing kinda guy

He always makes a few nice open field tackles. But he also whiffs on a few that should be tackles. I thought Spievey did a good job towards the end of the game.

I still enjoy hearing your thoughts too

And my name is Kale (the K in KDawg)….LOL (no worries…trust me I am used to people messing up my name). My brother is Nate….and not the Nate that is on POD.

My point is just that I want to see if people agree with me, or if they have another angle, or if they just plain disagree. I want to see the thoughts of my readers here, because that is why I write the posts to begin with. If nobody is responding. I would assume that nobody is reading…and then I might as well keep the things I am writing to myself.

You make good points in response, and you add to what I said. I like that. It makes me feel like there is value in my posts, in that they are thought provoking, as well as informative. Please keep replying…whether it is to debate, question, praise, or agree with me. Thanks.

Very much so.

I was afraid when I first opened this thing.

by Mavyrk on Nov 6, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

My key player

Is going to be the OLB assigned to Keller.

Keller is their main passing target, and Keller has been more productive in less receptions than possibly any TE in the league. If our LBs mess up on coverage in this, it’s over.

by Mavyrk on Nov 6, 2010 8:47 AM EDT reply actions

I agree to a point

However, Keller is BARELY more productive than any of the others…and need I remind you that Santonio Holmes has only played in 3 game, starting in just 1?

Here are their receiving stats, for their top 5 receivers:

Player Rec Yds Yds/Rec Long TD
Dustin Keller 26 388 14.9 41 5
Jerricho Cotchery 24 243 10.1 49 1
LaDainian Tomlinson 24 144 6.0 12 0
Braylon Edwards 22 375 17.0 67 4
Santonio Holmes 10 131 13.1 22 0

I think it is pretty clear that Mark Sanchez tries to spread the ball to all of his receivers. While I agree with you that our OLB covering Keller will play A key role, I would not say that it is THE key role to beating the Jets.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Nov 6, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

But.

The players covering Crotchery/Braylon/Holmes are our CBs. We know how they are, they’re solid.

The players covering LDT will be Levy and Delmas. I’m cool with that.

The players covering Keller are… um… exactly! We have no idea how good our LB squad will be when it comes to playing against Keller.

Also, keep in mind Keller is their TD leader, which means in the redzone Sanchez is looking to him. Not to mention his 14.9 avg is gonzos for a TE.

by Mavyrk on Nov 6, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I know

But if you look at the Packers game last week, Cotchery was their leading receiver and most of their passing yards came from long passes where the defense lapsed and allowed big plays. Keller had 2 catches for 45 yards…and one of them was a 40 yard catch. When a TE gets THAT deep…he becomes the responsibility of the safety most of the time, not the OLB.

Woodson was able to shut Edwards down for the most part, but he did have 1 catch for 32 yards (I say that is outstanding considering the fact that the Jets never scored). Cotchery had 4 catches for 89 yards, with a long of 49 (again…the Packers got beat deep a few times, but they did not allow a TD or even a FG). Clay Matthews and Desmond Bishop are the OLBs for the Packers…Matthews in not really known for his dominating pass coverage skills, and Bishop who? The Lions were able to complete 15 passes to their TEs against the Packers, for a combined 154 yards. Calvin Johnson beat Woodson for 6 catches, 86 yards, and 2 TDs, and the Lions also had 14 other catches to slot receivers and running backs that were supposed to be covered by linebackers.

The moral of the story here is this…the Jets receivers, including Dustin Keller, are not as good as people think they are. The Jets are a running team…and they hang their hats on that. Mark Sanchez completed 16 passes for 256 yards against the Packers…and the Lions completed 15 passes to their TEs alone, for 154 yards, against the same team. Take away the long desperation passes that the Jets completed against Green Bay, and Mark Sanchez goes 13 for 38 for 135 yards and 2 INTS…Shaun Hill was 34 for 54 for 331 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTS…that puts things into perspective.

Another nice job KDawg.

Although I don’t post as much as I have in the past, ( time is short with school ), I do get the chance to read your weekly game post and enjoy them. Even if its a day or 2 later. You do a fine job and I will try to at least post something short just to let you know what I think.
I can see why Calvin would be your key to the offense moving the ball. However, I would have to think the run game is a close second. As you pointed out, this keeps the LBs honest and gives the receivers a little more room to get open. I know Best hasn’t been 100% and it sounds like Smith might be struggling now as well, but the Lions need to find a way to establish the run with someone or the pass game will suffer IMO.
As far as the defense, Control the run and I think they will be fine. I have no dought they will pressure Sanchez, so the secondary will not have to cover people long before Sanchez has to throw the ball somewhere or eat the turf courtesy of the front four.

Question for you or anyone for that matter. Maybe I missed something but what happened to Jack Williams? I thought he came off injured researve and then never heard anything. I checked the roster and he is not listed. I was hoping he might help out at some time. Thanks and great job once again.

You think the Jets are the 3rd worst team we’re going to face this week. They’ve beaten the Patriots, Dolphins and Vikings. I’ve got to imagine they’re better than at least the Vikings and Eagles. While I don’t think they’re as good as most people are claming, I do think they’re at least the 2nd best team we’ve faced.

Thanks for the Post KDawg.

I really think that we plan to smack the Jets in the mouth and let the NFL know that we are here to stay! The Jets are one of the tougher teams out there and everyone is waiting to see what will happen. Our Lions are getting tougher every week as they get more experience as a team and more confidence among our younger players. I also think that Suh is going to have some great moments in the game that will definitely make the highlight reels. Of course I think that Corey Williams will create chaos with their OLine.
