Any word on Jack Williams?

Maybe I missed it, but have the Lions made a decision to activate or waive Jack Williams yet? I'm wondering what the deal is, especially with Brandon McDonald coming in and potentially being a better DB.

It'd be really great for our defense if one of these nickel guys can step into that role so that all three of our CBs regularly playing are solid...

Star-divide

The last news I remember came from a post on here (Oct. 20th):

"Cornerback Jack Williams came off the Physically Unable to Perform list this week and can practice with the team for three weeks before the team has to make a decision on whether to activate him, waive him or put him on injured reserve. Williams practiced with the Lions today but a decision on his future hasn't been made yet."

I hope it's the opposite.

First round CBs are that much better, relatively speaking, than first round LBs.

Agreed

You can find a pretty darn good LB in the 2nd.

Especially solid cover LBs.

Not great, but solid. All the “stud” first rounders are either freak-of-nature do-everything hall of fame top 100 players, or just overhyped DEs.

Well your #2's are getting better..

Each and every game. I’m sure they would be 1’s on many a team.

I believe

Woodson is the best corner in the league IMO. Love the guy. His overall talent level would be a once on a decade player to acquire. That being said. We are all very excited about Alphonso Smith. And I don’t think we have even seen his full capability. So young, becoming a ball hawk, reading Offenses better and better each game. The one game he did not have a pick, he shut down one of the top 5 WR at the moment in Hakeem Nicks. Chris Houston has shown great tackling skills for a corner, also sticks with his man on the play and I believe would thrive even more as a #3 CB. So whether we draft a CB in the 1st or 2nd round, I do not care. LB is more important. The Fonz will be our #1 corner.

Our 2 CB combo has been doing a great job imo

Since Phonz has been starting. The pass defence has not been getting torched by any quarterbacks. If Spievey can step up his game. Maybe the secondary will be set. Maybe.

Yup, I can agree with that.

As long as Wade is the hell out of here.

When they stopped throwing in Houston’s direction you knew other team’s respected his talent. Phonz solidified everything.

by delusional on Nov 6, 2010 7:59 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

On PFF

they said Houston got thrown at 7 times last week and gave up only 10 yards. Each and every week he is getting better and better and is on his way to being a shutdown corner if he keeps progressing the way he is. And the Phonz is a ball hawk.

by toled0lions on Nov 6, 2010 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I know....that's about as shutdown as you can get.

I’m very impressed with those 2. Houston has been playing his ass off.

by delusional on Nov 6, 2010 8:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Just think if we got a Asomough(sp?) or Revis type player.

And had a guy as good as Houston to be our #2 with Phonz as a nickel back and a spell to Houston. Thinking about that, we are really one player away from having a solid secondary to having an elite secondary.

by toled0lions on Nov 6, 2010 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

see toled0lions gets what i am saying

now LB is the bigger hole but i wouldnt be up set with a CB or OL

Revis and Asamunga types just don't drop out of trees.

You have to develop you own, and to me it looks like were doing just that. Plus it’s wayyyyy cheaper.

by delusional on Nov 6, 2010 10:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Oh don't get me wrong,

I believe our CB’s are plenty good enough to be the #1&#2 guys and still have a dominant defense after we upgrade the LB’s and add depth. But, if a guy like Patrick Peterson falls into our laps in the draft, and he is deemed the BPA, we have to take that guy over a position of greater need that we may have to reach a little on. If something like that were to happen, and they pulled the trigger on it, our secondary would be SCARY good, and would cover up other deficiencies in the defense the same way the defensive line is this year.

The secondary isn’t good enough yet to pass up on a CB that is the BPA for an area of greater need. And we also can’t afford to not look for upgrades whenever and wherever possible.

In saying that, I am extremely happy with the way our secondary players are developing and with how good it has actually turned out to be. Because that is 1 less gaping hole in our team that needs to be addressed instantly. There is a possible 3 less players (depending on Spievey turns out) we need to draft trade for, or acquire through free agency. And that could possibly cut a full year off of the complete overhaul of the team, and have us playoff bound sooner rather than later.

by toled0lions on Nov 6, 2010 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I see your point with Peterson.

Berry looked like he had a nose for the ball for sure.

Don't 4get

We get berry back next year too so the odds of wade being there next year are next to slim especially if they draft a cb
I think it’ll look more like

  1. or Houston
  2. Smith
  3. berry
  4. Mcdonald
if they should draft a cb then everyone would shift down. but wade and vasher will be outta here hopefully

by rom3o on Nov 7, 2010 5:45 AM EDT up reply actions

sounds about right

most of us were high on berry before he got injured. my feeling is tha Spievey will develop nicely at SS so we actually took care that need.

Smith – Spievey – Delmas – Houston + Berry (nickle) should be a solid group. Of course it would be good to get some depth back there though.

by x$pcents IV on Nov 7, 2010 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

I just want a solid #3 guy that can step in and cover well in three wide sets or in case of injury.

The way Houston and Alphonso are playing now, I would say getting another starting caliber corner is low on the needs list.

You guys do realize there will be a salary cap once a new agreement is reached., right? Trying to get an elite cover corner may not be in the cards. I can see drafting a good corner in 2011 to develop as another corner, but that sort of leaves out Aaron Berry who the coaches were quite high on and was our nickel corner in game one this year before getting injured.

Our secondary is looking very good and is very young. Maybe they just need an opportunity to work together and get even better?

by NorthLeft12 on Nov 6, 2010 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

Shit

I forgot about Berry, who in his first game, as an un-drafted free agent, looked like a possible starting caliber corner. That would be awesome if he could become our shutdown nickel corner.

by toled0lions on Nov 6, 2010 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He looked solid.

I wouldnt say he looked like a future starter. He needs some work but could be a starter someday.

I am not sure that we must have a corner

While I think it would be nice to get Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara in the first round I am not sure that we HAVE to take either of them.

For one, there are a lot of big cornerbacks in this years draft. The amount of 6-1 corners is amazing and there is even a 6-2 guy from Colorado that has good speed. Hm wonder if any of them will become new era NFL safties.

For two I think we have a solid starting trio with Houston, Smith, and Wade. We also have Aaron Berry, Amari Spievey, and others like Paul Pratt that could emerge next year. Not to mention that no one has really looked into the available free agents or the possibility that we may Mayhew some poor GM out of their former hight round prospect which they had given up on.

I do agree that value wise if you want a shutdown corner taking one in the first round makes the most sense. It also makes the most sense to take a corner high in the draft based on value of the position in terms of contract dollars. So a lot of things line up for us there.

As for a LB I am not sold that you have to pick one in the first round at all. For arguments sake I will stick to 4-3 LB here, it will narrow the list down a LOT.

Jon Beason Round 1 Pick 25
Jonathan Vilma Round 1 Pick 12
DeMeco Ryans Round 2 Pick 33
Brian Cushing Round 1 Pick 15
Lance Briggs Round 3 Pick 68
Lofa Tatupu Round 2 Pick 45
Brian Urlacher Round 1 Pick 9
Chad Greenway Round 1 Pick 17

Yah know the 3-4 LBers are so good I cant just leave them out, I think most of them could easily convert to a 4-3 LB.

Ray Lewis round 1 Pick 26
DeMarcus Ware Round 1 Pick 11
Patrick Willis Round 1 Pick 11
James Harrison Undrafted
LaMarr Woodley Round 2 Pick 46
Terrell Suggs Round 1 Pick 10
Calvin Pace Round 1 Pick 18
Jerod Mayo Round 1 Pick 10
London Fletcher Undrafted
Karlos Dansby Round 2 Pick 33
Bart Scott Undrafted
Nick Barnett round 1 Pick 29
Elvis Dumervil Round 4 Pick 126
David Harris Round 2 Pick 47
Clay Matthews Round 1 Pick 26
Shawne Merriman Round 1 Pick 12
Joey Porter Round 3 Pick 73

Sooooooo…. 4-3 LB = 8, 3-4 LB = 17, Total = 25. I think they represent just about the top 25 currently in football, if it is not exact it is a pretty good representation. The Highest selected was Urlacher at 9th overall, 3 on this list were not drafted at all. The average draft position of this group is 28th overall for the 4-3 guys and 73rd overall for the 3-4 guys, but that is with 3 undrafted in there counting as a 255 pick. Taking the undrafted guys out the 3-4 group would be picked at an average spot of 34th. Overall the group would be picked at 32nd on average without the undrafted guys, with them it would drop to 59th overall.

A further look

4-3 Guys and the rounds selected in
Round 1: 5
Round 2: 2
Round 3: 1

3-4 Guys and the rounds selected in
Round 1: 9
Round 2: 3
Round 3: 1
Round 4: 1
Undrafted: 3

56% drafted in round 1
20% drafted in round 2
8% drafted in round 3
4% drafted in round 4
12% not drafted

Historically speaking the majority of good linebackers are picked in the first round in the mid to late selections. There is a good amount of 2nd round picks in this group as well. And when it comes to picking a linebacker in the 3rd or 4th round you are just as likely to find an impact player after the draft.

Well anyways I think I gave people things to think about in the whole CB vs LB debate, and it is very debatable. Honestly I think it all comes down to who is available at the time we pick. Everyone seems to agree, even all of the draftnick sites, that the only CB worth a top 15 pick coming out next year are Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara. If anyone wants to get more complete with this, in terms of names, maybe someone could find the LB that are top 15 talent for us? That would narrow it down a lot. I guess for arguments sake we could look at the 2nd round talent at some point too.
