Det looking at kickers

http://apps.detnews.com/apps/blogs/lionsblog/index.php?blogid=2427

Jason Hanson apperently is hurt enough that we are shopping for a fill in. Including Dave Rayner a former Michigan State kicker. I will say atleast one player from the Jets showed some class. No it wasn't Bart Scott apologizing for his stupid remarks about us being dirty. Trevor Pryce did talk to Schwartz after the game and said he was sorry for the hit. He explained the situation to him as well. I guess it just a good thing we won't play Buffalo with Ndamukong Suh the many of many skills kicking are feild goals.

I hope.

This isn’t the end of Hanson’s career. I really hope so. If it is, I hope he gets voted in, in five years. I have a lot of hope for the guy who stuck with this franchise for almost twenty years.

Let’s hope we can find a kicker who’s half the man Hanson is. We’ll do quite fine.

I hope so to

He deserves to decide when his time is up.

RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.

They should look at...

Brett Swenson from Michigan State. I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t remember him getting picked up by any team. He was pretty good in college.

by Preseason Champs on Nov 8, 2010 7:31 PM EST reply actions

I just checked...

and he was projected as the number 1 kicker in the draft last season. However, he got picked up by the Colts and is on injured reserve

Rayner

should be able to come in and do fine for us. You never know we might find a diamond in the rough here with a kicker to take over for Hanson when he does decide to retire. hopefully not this year though. I want him to retire with a winning season under his belt. At least a .500 season.

I say bring in a combo kicker

A young guy that can Place Kick-Punt and handle Kick Offs..keep Harris or Hanson on the roster (release the other guy) who ever we keep .Say Hanson let him Place Kick ,let the new guy punt and do KO’s or if we Keep Harris ,let Harris Punt and the new guy Place kick and KO’s ..

I'm not sure I want a P/K

If your offense doesn’t score enough, leg fatigue would really play a factor. Especially late in the season. Punting all day, then trying for a long field goal with a tired leg? and kick offs to boot? Heaven forbid he gets rolled over like Hanson, now our entire special teams capacity is severely diminished. I vote no on prop P/K.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

Unbelievable

You can say what you want about missed tackles, bad play calling, etc..
The difference in the game was a missed PAT.
I just can’t believe that Suh was our back up field goal kicker. That’s just
bad roster management not to have a qualified kicker as reserve. Normally,
isn’t that the punter? So, we don’t have a qualified back up holder on tap either?
It’s just amazing to me.

Expectations don't produce!

It amazes me

That you actually think with our lack of depth and injuries, at most positions, we should waste a roster spot on a “qualified kicker”.

by shbrandt on Nov 8, 2010 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

Suh is their backup place kicker!

From what I understand he is pretty good, they just failed to let him warm up.

by donl517 on Nov 8, 2010 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

that was not a problem

it was his timing. he stuttered, probably just not mentally ready, and got going too early. motion looked alright, he was just off.

by haywood on Nov 9, 2010 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

Uh.

What are you talking about?

We may have lost by 1, but the difference in the game was not the missed PAT.

And what do you mean Suh’s not qualified? His entire family plays soccer, he played soccer, and he damn near made the kick despite being not warmed up.

by Mavyrk on Nov 8, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

Actually it was.

Go figure.

But I certainly wouldn’t blame the Lions for not keeping a back-up kicker on hand, those things are even more protected than QBs, strangely enough.

by Doc Scratch on Nov 9, 2010 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

It was most certainly not.

Do you REALLY think we get up to 21-17 and the Jets decide, “Well, okay, we’ll just kick a field goal and make sure it looked like we lost close.”

Hell no. The game would have been 21-17, or it would have been 21-24, no overtime. Missing that PAT does not mean we suddenly don’t go into overtime.

by Mavyrk on Nov 9, 2010 12:54 AM EST up reply actions

If we're up 21-17 though

it means that the Jets absolutely HAVE to score a touchdown on their last drive. A field goal does nothing for them. A four point lead puts all the pressure on the Jets, whereas the three point lead meant that all they had to do was get into field goal range to tie it up and send the game to OT. So, yes, it most certainly was the difference.

Do not view the Slimby Slimming Picture if you or anyone in your family has a history of mental health problems.

by Mogwai on Nov 9, 2010 3:31 AM EST up reply actions

It was most certainly not.

Keying into the last thing that led to one point is completely offbase. You are basically assuming the Jets would fail at making a touchdown, and that we wouldn’t give up the game in some other fashion.

But games are decided by 60 minutes of play. Not one XPA.

by Mavyrk on Nov 9, 2010 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not assuming anything...

It’s pretty basic. If you’re up by 3 at the end of the game, the other team has only to drive into field goal range to tie it up.

If you’re up by 4, it means that they have to score a touchdown, and it puts all the pressure on them.

I don’t know how I can say that anymore clearly.

Do not view the Slimby Slimming Picture if you or anyone in your family has a history of mental health problems.

by Mogwai on Nov 9, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

They also.

Chose to give us a kick instead of trying to onside it. There are way too many variables to pick out the missed XPA. It just doesn’t work like that.

No he doesn't

Harris is our holder.

gunny would have made it then gave tons of fun ryan the finger!!

Well the jets would have gone for two on the td

Lots would have been different. This is just one of the many reasons that we lost this game. The worst by far was JPs penalty. Nobody is talking about it here but his was the nail in the coffin.
