I know everybody knows about the dreaded "Bobby Layne Curse" that was supposedly put on us back in 1958, but I think that we are cursed in a totally different way than just the supposed curse that was provoked by Layne's disdain towards this organization. I think we should actually call it the "Curse of William Clay Ford".
Since 1964, the Detroit Lions have never been to a Superbowl, have one playoff win, only 3 division crowns, have only even made the playoffs 9 times with losing every single time in the 1st round expect in 1991 when they got blown out in the NFC Championship, have only had 1 probowl QB, had 2 of the best running backs in the league at the time in Barry Sanders and Billy Sims but never put enough talent around either one of them to build a winner, have the only player to die on the field during a game, hired a GM that's considered to be "The worst GM in sports history" in Matt Millen and even gave him an extension, have had 10 going on 11 straight seasons of playoff-less football (2000-2010) and one more losing season would tie their original record for not reaching the playoffs (1958-1969), have the worst winning percentage of all time, numerous 1st round draft busts, free agent flops, disastrous and mismatched coaching hires, and has had the only team to go 0-16 and be considered the "worst team in NFL history" according to NFL Network. And that's even not the worst of it.
Our current team actually has talent on both sides of the ball for the first time in a long time, QB Matthew Stafford might be the best quarterback that we ever had outside of Bobby Layne...if he could just stay healthy enough to prove it. He missed 6 games his rookie season and might miss all but 2 1/2 of his sophomore season. If he get's hurt again next year, he might not be around in 2012 and will go probably go on to win a Superbowl for some other team while the Lions are still in the basement of the NFC North. It just seems like the Lions will never catch a break and if they do catch a break, something else will eventually go wrong. If it's not lack of talent, it's lack of luck. If it's not lack of luck, it's the refs screwing the team over on crucial game deciding calls, (See Calvin Johnson's game winning "non TD" catch in the 2010 opener) if it's neither of those, it's an act of the football GODs deciding our fate.
Truth is, I know that William Clay Ford carries around some sort of bad karma, otherwise this crazy shit probably never would keep happening to this team. It's unreal to see the list of everything I posted and everything on that Curse of Bobby Layne site with everything that's that's happened to this team ever since Ford bought it. He must not deserve a winning football team, for one reason or another. The only thing I can think of that will help this situation is if he dies and either Bill Ford Jr. takes over or sells it. I feel in my heart, after 19 years of watching the same crap and after 50+ years of my Grandfather watching the same crap, that this team is cursed by William Clay Ford, who will never win being the owner.
It's sad too, because the people who are fans of this team are probably the most deserving fans of any NFL team. It's just unfortunate that the owner of the team is the most undeserving and can't build or won't build a winner for the people who care about this team. One day, I just know it, if this keeps happening, the fans will completely abandon this franchise and Ford will have no choice but to have his son take over or sell it, and this team will finally get to the Superbowl and win it to make every fan proud for the first time. Too bad we just don't know when that will be.
